The annual gala will highlight the need to advance scientific research and expand community programs that protect the cardiovascular health of York County residents. The association is working to provide reliable, science-based information for the approximately 120 million people in the United States who currently have one or more cardiovascular conditions which could put them at higher risk for COVID-19 complications. The event will feature the story of 15year-old local congenital heart defect survivor Nathan Campisi. Nate’s parents, Jason Campisi and Amy Foxwell, learned that Amy was pregnant after three years of trying. After some early tests revealed that their baby might have spina bifida, they started going for ultrasounds more

frequently. Additional testing showed the earlier test may have been a false positive. However, during a 33rd-week ultrasound, doctors noticed something wrong with the baby’s heart. One week later, Nate was born. Doctors moved the baby to the NICU, where they learned that Nate had a congenital heart defect called anductus arteriosus and would need open heart surgery right away. While they waited for surgery day, Nate developed a life-threatening infection that only added to their worry. He fought the infection and made it through his surgery successfully. He recovered from the surgery, but a regular hearing test revealed that Nate was deaf, a possible side effect of the medicine he received to fight his infection. He was diagnosed with auditory neuropathy, but with the help of a hearing aid he received at age 3, he is able to live a normal life. “After all of that, Nate is on the dean’s list at school, loves basketball and video games, and we couldn’t be more proud or happy for him and what his future holds,” said Jason. “If it weren’t for all of the screening, testing, medications and surgical expertise available to him, Nate would not be with us today. We’re helping the American
Heart Association with their fight to advance research and healthier lives, because you never know if those advancements could just save someone in your family.” The York Heart Ball is a premier event for the American Heart Association and is attended by philanthropists and supporters committed to the lifesaving work of the organization. Attendees are encouraged to dress formally for a virtual red carpet. The event will highlight milestones in the fight against heart disease and stroke, provide healthy recipe tips during a cooking demonstration from UPMC, and offer auction items up for bids. All proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association, which recently announced a $2.5 million fund for rapid response scientific research projects to investigate the specific cardiovascular implications of coronavirus. The York Heart Ball will be hosted by local news anchor Amy Lutz and her husband, Peter Smith. The American Heart Association is an organization focused on heart and brain health for all. For more information and to register for the York Heart Ball, readers may visit http://york heartball.heart.org or follow #YorkHeartBall on social media.

reading, hiking, and completing activities starting on May 30. Participants may participate in the Get Outdoors (GO) York! physical activity program which will begin on Wednesday, July 1, at parks across the county. According to York County Libraries youth services director Paula Gilbert, there will be prizes and incentives for youths for achieving reading and activity goals. Each child participating will need his or her own library card to track individual progress. Parents can request a free card for their children at www.yorklibraries.org. They can also register their children for SummerQuest until the last program day on Sunday, Aug. 16. However, Gilbert suggests registering for SummerQuest by the May 30 kickoff so that the children can jump right into the fun, start recording their progress, and get the most from the program. Each year, local businesses donate prizes to encourage children to keep reading and to stay active over the summer months. York County Libraries includes 13 libraries that provide the latest in print and electronic information, bestsellers, Wi-Fi, story times, book discussions and more. Scouts Caden McKinney and Elijah Motter of Troop 25 in east York were elevated to the rank of Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor on Feb. 25. The Scouts received their awards from Troop 25 Scoutmaster Perry Bevivino. For his Eagle Scout Project, Elijah, son of Leo Motter and Tina Kent, designed and installed a prayer wall for his youth group at St. Joseph Church. The project involved turning one entire wall into a white board so members of the youth group could write prayer requests and other messages of support. He also supervised fellow Scouts and adults in repairing book shelves and making other improvements to the youth room. Having started out as a Tiger Cub, Elijah has been a Scout for 11 years and has earned 24 merit badges. Elijah is also a member of the Boy Scouts of America’s Order of the Arrow. Elijah is a junior at Central York High School and plans to attend college to study electrical engineering. For his Eagle Scout Project, Caden, son of Mark and Michele McKinney, converted an observation deck into an outdoor classroom at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. This project involved removing the banisters; power washing the deck, although there was not easy access to water and electricity; and then re-staining the deck. Three sets of benches were added along with a metal roof that was extended to cover everything. The project took a total of 109 hours to complete for Caden and his adult and Scout helpers. Having started out as a Tiger Cub, Caden has been a Scout for 12 years and has earned 26 merit badges. Caden is a senior at Central York High School. He is undecided about college but would like to eventually major in environmental science. Both Scouts thanked their parents, their Scoutmaster, and fellow Scouts, friends and family members for their help in completing their projects and their Eagle requirements. State Rep.

The association currently has more than 80 apprentices from more than 30 companies in its multi-year apprentice training program, which aims to help regional manufacturers create a steady pipeline of skilled workers to meet their needs moving into the future. The southcentral Pennsylvania manufacturing sector was recently awarded a second round of funding to further support the Next Generation Manufacturing Industry Partnership. The commonwealth’s PAsmart Next Gen grants provide funds to support the development, launch, implementation, and technical assistance of Next Gen

Over the past year, the Southcentral Pennsylvania Manufacturing Next Gen Industry Partnership of regional manufacturing leaders created action teams that focused on the most urgent needs identified by the industry. Those include promoting manufacturing careers to grow the future workforce, improving training opportunities for middle-skill and technical occupations, and facilitating businessto-business connections to exchange best practices. A multi-agency plan providing quarantine space in York County for people who cannot self-isolate has been deployed in response to the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. This alternative sheltering option exists for homeless individuals, those living in congregate housing, and others who have been determined by their health care provider or case manager as being unable to self-isolate in their current housing situation. This plan includes hotel space, transportation, meals, hygiene kits, and twice-daily check-ins handled by WellSpan Health and UPMC. Any case management the individual had remains in place to provide additional support. Homeless individuals will be connected to local providers assisting with housing.
The quarantine housing plan is activated when symptoms are evaluated either online, by phone, or in person by a medical professional who will determine the need for a COVID-19 test. To access these services, individuals should work with their preferred health system and medical provider. If an individual does not have a medical provider, a health system should be selected for this purpose. If a COVID-19 test is issued, individuals should identify their next steps based on the health system they are working with. For WellSpan Health, individuals should connect with their health care provider, case manager, or housing program staff for guidance on isolation practices, accessing transportation, and quarantine
shelter. Individuals needing COVID-19 information and support can call WellSpan’s hotline at 855-851-3641. For UPMC, individuals should call the UPMC Pinnacle Nurse Advice Line at 866-9687731. Guidance will be provided on isolation practices, accessing transportation, and quarantine shelter. In addition to WellSpan Health and UPMC, agencies involved include York County, York County Planning Commission, York City Bureau of Health, Rabbittransit, and York County Coalition on Homelessness. The effort has also received funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, and Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

possible. The recovery plan includes evaluation of areas of focus on, including emergency management, resources, and preparedness; local government recovery; court system; law enforcement/criminal justice; health care and resurgence mitigation; economic recovery and restart; hospitality industry restart; nonprofit and social services restart; technological capacity; education and child care; vulnerable populations; and equitable and inclusive recovery. The areas of focus will evaluate what worked well and what did not throughout the COVID-19 crisis and will encompass short-, mid-, and long-term recommendations, tasks, and goals. There will be two overarching themes woven throughout each area of focus: public policy recommendations and steps to ensure the county’s restart is equitable, inclusive, and focused on all county residents.
