York County recently moved into the yellow phase of reopening, and York Day Nursery (YDN) opened to its families on June 3. YDN aims to provide a safe, highquality early child care option in order to assist parents as they return to work. Although YDN has always had high standards for sanitization because of its national NAEYC accreditation, new protocols are being put into place in accordance with new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Those measures include daily temperature checks and new drop-off and pickup procedures to minimize people coming into the building and to keep families socially distant. YDN staff members spent two days cleaning their classrooms, removing toys that are harder to sanitize and learning new guidelines and protocols.

York County Parks and Recreation opened certain amenities on May 22. May 22 marked the first day of York County being classified in the yellow phase of the state’s reopening plan. The off-leash dog area at Canine Meadows is now open. Fountains, however, will be closed, so users should bring water for their dogs. Restrooms are open at several locations, including John Rudy Park - Pines Picnic Area; Rocky Ridge Park - Hidden Laurel and Oak Timbers; William H. Kain Park - Lake Redman and Lake Williams activity areas; and Heritage Rail Trail New Freedom Train Station. All portable restrooms throughout the park system have been available for use. Additional cleaning protocols are in place. Users must practice social distancing and wear masks in the restrooms. Park rangers will disperse groups of more than 25 people. Picnic tables are available throughout the parks.
Pavilions will be available for rental, but only for groups of 25 or fewer people. To reserve a pavilion, readers may call the parks office at 717-840-7440, ext. 2, or visit https://york countypa.gov/parks-recreation/ facilities-rentals-permits -parks.html. Online reservations began being accepted on June 1. Nixon Park Nature Center will reopen with limited hours. Sections of the building like the hands-on touch room will stay closed. Programs are on hold indefinitely. Readers may call 717-428-1961 for hours of operation. Lake Redman boat rentals are closed indefinitely. All playgrounds and soccer and softball fields remain closed. The nature play areas at Rocky Ridge and Nixon parks also remain closed. The Parks Administrative Building remains closed to the public. Park staff is available to the public by contacting 717840-7440 or parks@yorkcounty pa.gov. Park visitors who enter the Administrative Building must wear a mask at all times.
Church To Offer In-Person Worship Spry Church, 50 School St., York, is making plans to resume in-person worship at the 9 a.m. traditional service and the 9:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. contemporary services on Sunday, June 21. Sunday school for all and the children’s programs, including the nursery, will resume at a later date. For several weeks, Pastor Ken and staff members have been working to ensure that the church will be repeatedly sanitized, social distancing observed, and hand sanitizers made
available. The church encourages congregants to wear masks and asks people to stay at home if they are ill. These guidelines are intended to help keep everyone safe and well. Online worship will continue every Sunday at www.spry church.com/sermons. The audio recording of each service may be heard by dialing 833-831-8193, which is a toll-free number, anytime and waiting for the most recent service to begin. For more information, readers may call 717-741-1429.
Video Enthusiasts Enhance Online Worship Like many congregations, ValleyView Alliance Church in Hellam began holding its weekly services online when the stay-at-home order was put in place. Helping to make this format of worship possible are good friends Allison “Fish Fisher and Erin Habecker. In mid-March, when Pennsylvania suspended gatherings of 10 or more people, ValleyView moved quickly. Pastor Lee Nanfelt recalled Fisher and Habecker’s enthusiasm for making creative videos, some of which featured church members, especially fellow young adults, and for posting these videos online. Fisher and Habecker, who had both been laid off from their jobs due to the pandemic, agreed to edit videos for online worship. Services have included two selections of worship music coordinated by assistant pastor James O’Handly, who, like Fisher and Habecker, is an Eastern York High School graduate. Members of the congregation have contributed by reading Scripture or
praying. Special features have been added most weeks. For example, member Kathy Myer and her donkey were featured on Palm Sunday, and a recent video included an overlay of the Susquehanna River as Psalm 42 was read. Nanfelt has given a series of shortened messages called “Peace in Troubled Times, largely focused on the Psalms. The entire worship sequence is about 30 minutes long to accommodate the online format. Online worship will likely continue in some form after inperson worship is resumed at ValleyView. Online messages are posted weekly late Saturday night or early Sunday morning and are available for viewing anytime afterward at www.valleyviewcma.org. ValleyView Alliance Church, 200 Alliance Ave., is located just behind Fulton Bank on Market Street in Hellam. For more information or to contact ValleyView, readers may visit the aforementioned website.

SPCA Updates Clinic Schedule
Revolution To Host Invitational Recognizing the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on seniors’ final years on the diamond, the York Revolution has announced that it is inviting area high school senior baseball and softball players to play in the Class of 2020 Baseball and Softball Invitationals at PeoplesBank Park this summer. While dates will depend on the easing of restrictions on organized sports and other regulations, team officials reported that the invitationals will take place on separate days at the ballpark for Class of 2020 baseball and softball players, respectively. The Revolution has created an online preregistration form to gauge the interest of seniors and will use their responses to craft the pickup style series of games for baseball and for softball. The link to the sign-up form is available at www.yorkrevolution.com/team/ news-archive/?article_id=950.
The York Revolution is inviting area high school senior baseball and softball players to play in the Class of 2020 Baseball and Softball Invitationals at PeoplesBank Park this summer. York Revolution president Eric Menzer said the team is considering dates in mid-July to late July for the games and will further shape the events based on the feedback of area seniors. The current concept is to form teams joining seniors from all the YAIAA high schools under the
leadership of a group of high school coaches. Mentzer stressed that the events will be kept as flexible as possible to ensure the safety of all participants. The Revolution will announce additional details regarding the invitationals as they become confirmed.
The York County SPCA reopened its spay/neuter clinic with modified safety protocols on May 26. The organization was required to close the high-volume clinic in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Information from both the CDC and state and national veterinary medical organizations at that time dictated that elective spay/neuter surgeries must be temporarily suspended, both to conserve personal protective equipment and to prevent the spread of COVID-19. During the closure, caretakers were unable to have free-roaming cats spayed or neutered. The Pennsylvania Veterinary
Medical Association has since revised its statement, now allowing veterinarians to use their professional judgement to resume these elective procedures, while still adhering to state policies and recommendations regarding social distancing. York County SPCA’s decision to reopen its spay/neuter clinic was made after careful consideration by the organization’s leadership team and by consulting recommendations from the CDC, the AVMA, and shelter medicine experts. In order to safely resume services, several modifications to scheduling, intake, and discharge procedures have been made. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)

WellSpan, Letterkenny Partner On The Front Lines Of COVID-19 watched a local television newscast in early April that highlighted Letterkenny Army Depot’s upholstery shop, which produced around 4,800 cloth masks to protect its own employees. He wondered if a similar effort or collaboration could help protect a portion of WellSpan Health’s 20,000 employees. Massimilla shared the information about Letterkenny’s efforts with WellSpan Health’s performance improvement team, comprising hospital officials and engineers. According to Keith Noll, senior vice president - chief administrative officer for WellSpan Health, the team would later be nicknamed the “MacGyver team” after the star of the television series who uses unconventional problemsolving skills to save lives. The team, led by Debra Ruckert, senior director of performance improvement at WellSpan Health, utilized unconventional designs and paths to production that incorporated local manufacturers and distilleries, which had capabilities of producing anything from hand sanitizer to intubation devices and masks. Members of the hospital’s team visited Letterkenny Army Depot to learn more about its manufacturing capabilities. Typically, the upholstery shop at Letterkenny focuses on production of items such as canvas tents, kitchens and vinyl products. As discussions moved forward

CARRYOUTS ONLY Shawn Hind, Letterkenny Army Depot (center), discusses isolation gown materials with (from left) WellSpan Health performance improvement team members James Eichelberger and Srinath Asuri and Letterkenny’s Logan Robinson at the Army depot’s upholstery shop on April 22. and the partnership took shape, Letterkenny shared its mask design for producing cloth community masks. Back in York, a couple sheets of plastic, garbage bags and a rain poncho were used in figuring out a prototype that would allow WellSpan Health to eventually mesh a material design to create isolation gowns. Letterkenny reallocated resources to adequately staff its upholstery shop to begin gown production. While the initial order was to make 70,000 protective gowns, Noll said that there was enough material to support production of at least 225,000. Letterkenny expected production to take six to eight weeks to fulfill the first order, while it provided weekly deliveries to a WellSpan distribution site.
Noll added that innovative thinking and partnering with manufacturers throughout the five counties that WellSpan Health serves can allow the system to be less reliant on the national supply chain and be better prepared moving forward. As potential supply shortages became imminent for WellSpan Health because of COVID-19, leaders within the organization took a proactive approach by fostering relationships to secure necessary resources needed to care for communities and staff members. These efforts included forming a special partnership with Letterkenny Army Depot near Chambersburg. On May 1, Letterkenny started production of 70,000 protective gowns for WellSpan Health to help bolster the local health care system’s supply chain as it continues to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Letterkenny produced prototypes for cloth face masks for WellSpan Health, which has shared the designs with other community partners. Letterkenny Army Depot has been supporting frontline U.S. military efforts since the 1940s and stepped up to join a much different fight to protect people. In February, prior to its first patient testing positive for COVID19, WellSpan Health was reacting to supply chain demand as production of personal protective equipment (PPE) in China was diminished due to the country’s battle with the pandemic, and PPE was redirected to U.S. cities already experiencing COVID-19. Meanwhile, John Massimilla, chief operating officer and vice president of administration for WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital,

She was also instrumental in relaying the story to the Marines’ superiors. On Jan. 28, Reichart-Warfel and his three fellow Marines had the rare honor of being awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal - the highest non-combat medal for individuals who have undertaken a life-threatening risk in an act of heroism. According to Sgt. Maj. Joshua Wruble, senior enlisted leader of Marine Air Control Squadron 2, criteria for the award is strict, and documentation such as notarized witness statements, diagrams, and input from first responders is required. Additionally, the awards can only be approved by the commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. During the medal ceremony, attended by over 500 Marines, Maj. General Karsten Heckl, commanding general of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, recognized Reichart-Warfel for leading and orchestrating the rescue.

A team of students from Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA) in Harrisburg qualified to compete at the national Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) on April 25. The CCA team has won the state championship for 10 consecutive years, though a key change this year is that the competition took place virtually amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The CCA team won the Pennsylvania state competition in February, automatically qualifying for the national event. During the school’s closure, the team of students has collaborated virtually to complete the presentation for the national competition. The RWDC tasked students with a professional engineering challenge to design and implement unmanned aerial systems, more commonly known as drones, to improve everyday life and tackle issues facing global industries. The CCA team designed a drone that takes off with rotors pointing upward, then switches to a hybrid airfoil for long-distance flight to conserve battery power. The challenge required students to design a drone that could carry a payload of up to 5 kilograms, make continuous deliveries through a neighborhood, and complete its route with at least 20 minutes’ worth of battery life remaining.
CCA’s team members included 12th-grader Alisher Aminov of Lebanon, 12th-grader Timothy Cribbs of Camp Hill, 12th-grader Kenya Mitchell of Steelton, 10thgrader Bella Christianson of Waynesboro, 10th-grader Numayr McPhaul of York, and 10th-grader Luke Zimmerman of Palmyra. The RWDC was founded to help build the United States science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce by allowing high school students to work and compete in a collaborative setting on real global engineering challenges.
The competition aims to equip the next generation of engineers and scientists with the knowledge to address real-world challenges. The CCA team has finished in second place nationally twice since first participating in the RWDC in 2008. The competition virtually hosted teams from around the world as they presented their inventions to a panel of judges who have careers in the aerospace and defense industries. CCA is a Pennsylvania public cyber charter school serving students statewide in kindergarten through 12th grade.
A team of students from Commonwealth Charter Academy recently competed at the national Real World Design Challenge, which tasked students to design and implement unmanned aerial systems, also known as drones.
