“The car show is always the third Saturday in June, which almost always is the day before Father’s Day,” Resch said. “It’s a great way to celebrate fathers, grandfathers, and father figures in our lives. There’s a story behind every car. You’ll see a lot of vehicles that have special connections to fathers and sons, fathers and daughters, and grandfathers and grandchildren.” Proceeds from this year’s show will benefit the Columbia Creative Factory, Susq Camp for children ages 12 to 15 sponsored by Susquehanna Heritage, the SVCC Visitors Center, and the Columbia Lions Club’s vision program. Last year, show proceeds were donated to the Columbia Public Library, the Columbia Borough Police Department for a new bicycle, and the Columbia Economic Development Corporation for a mural at Front and Walnut streets.

than 1,300 pounds of canned goods were donated to the food bank last year. Once again, the show will have a patriotic theme in honor of veterans, active-duty service members, members of law enforcement, and emergency service workers. An honor guard from Boy Scout Troop 35 will march down Locust Street and display the United States flag at noon, after which the national anthem will be played. Vehicle owners will then rev their engines to simulate “thunder on the river.” Local band The Kracker Beez will perform from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Children’s activities will be offered at the Kids Pit Stop in the Locust Street Park gazebo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free crafts and snacks will be provided by the ColumbiaMiddletown Elks 1074. It’s called Thunder on the River, and if you are in downtown Columbia on Saturday, June 15, you will know why. You might want to wear earplugs as more than 500 cars, trucks, and motorcycles will roll into town for the annual car show and rev their engines in unison for a few minutes after the national anthem at noon. “We started this tradition a few years ago, and it’s become a highlight of the show,” said Paul Resch, vice president of the Columbia Lions Club, which organizes the show along with the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC). “A lot of people think that’s how the car show got its name since the sound of 500 engines at full throttle sounds a lot like a thunder storm. The truth is, we came up with the name first, and then a few years ago someone had this idea. It was perfect.” The annual Thunder on the River car and motorcycle show will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 15, rain or shine. Vehicles will be lined up along Locust Street between Second and Sixth streets and in the Locust Street Park. Admission is free for spectators. Parking is available in Janson Park, 650 Cherry Street, Columbia, and in the public parking lot in the 100 block of Locust Street. Food will be available for purchase from local restaurants, churches, nonprofit groups, and vendors. Oldies music will serve as a backdrop for the fun-filled day. All makes and models of cars, trucks, and motorcycles are welcome to participate. Show organizers will award 100 trophies, including one for best of show and the Barry Doutrich Memorial Trophy. Doutrich owned an auto repair shop and founded the car show in 2005 under the name Cruisin’ Columbia. Other trophy categories include best engine, best import, best interior, best exterior, best truck, best vintage, best cycle and most unique. Interested individuals may call 717-684-5249 or go to www.pariver towns.com to register a vehicle. Preregistration is encouraged, but same day registration is available for a set fee. Show participants are asked to bring two nonperishable food items for the Columbia Food Bank. More

Ceremony To Honor Vietnam Veterans U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker, in conjunction with the office of U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, will lead a ceremony honoring area Vietnam-era veterans with a 50th-anniversary commemorative pin. Veterans from the 11th Congressional District are invited to attend and be honored at this event. This ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 15, at 8 a.m. in the library at Columbia Junior/Senior High School, 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of station location, and who did not receive a pin at the March 29 event at Lancaster Airport will be eligible to receive a lapel pin at this ceremony. Veterans’ family members and veterans from all periods of service are invited to attend the ceremony. Toomey co-sponsored legislation to permanently designate March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of veterans who served during the Vietnam War. The bill has been signed into law by President Donald Trump. Following the recognition ceremony, Smucker, joined by members of Toomey’s staff, will participate in the unveiling of a portrait of retired Lt. Gen. David L. Mann, the 10th alumnus of Columbia High School to

rise to the rank of general or admiral in the United States Armed Forces. Columbia High School and elementary students will participate in the program. Vietnam-era veterans who wish to attend should call Smucker’s office at 717393-0667 by Thursday, June 13, at noon.

Attendees learn about city, county, and state government by participating in simulations where they operate the agencies and levels of local governments in Pennsylvania themselves. At KBS 2019, youths will have the opportunity to hear about the Travis Manion Foundation and its vision to create a nation of purpose-driven individuals and thriving communities that is built on character. Participants will also attend a college fair with more than 30 colleges and universities represented; actively participate in a labor negotiation simulation on behalf of one of four parties in the pact; hear about leadership from Dr. John J. Bell, superintendent of the Delaware Valley School District and a national speaker; and compete for Samsung American Legion Scholarships. Those chosen to attend KBS are high school juniors who are selected based on individual qualities such as character and school and community involvement and

who express an interest in leadership and government. Honors, awards, extracurricular activities, employment history, and civic and church involvement are considered in the selection. As part of that process, each candidate was asked to complete an application and was interviewed by members of the post’s Americanism Committee. This year’s selected students include student-athletes who have earned varsity letters and recognition as League AllStars. The students also include Eagle Scouts, musicians, and members of Student Councils, Mock Trial Teams, Team America Rocketry Challenge and National Honor Society chapters. They are volunteers in their community. Many have expressed interest in continuing to serve their communities, state, or nation by pursuing teaching degrees in the sciences, serving as commissioned officers in the military, or serving as public servants. More than 175 business, health care and community leaders from across York County attended the 2019 York Heart Ball, “Rev Up Your Heart,” on April 27 at the Country Club of York. The event, which had a “Grease” theme, raised nearly $200,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health. Television news anchor Amy Lutz hosted the evening’s festivities, which included silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing. The American Heart Association, York Division, presented its Volunteer of the Year Award to Will Lavery and the Passion Award to longtime Heart Ball volunteers Teann Scoggins and Joel Rosenblatt. The real star of the evening was 2-year-old Bristol Miller of Airville. On March 1, 2018, 14-month-old Bristol was home with her babysitter while her parents, Josh and Leah Miller, were at work. That afternoon, Josh, who is also a local paramedic, received an emergency page for a pediatric cardiac arrest at the babysitter’s address. He knew immediately it was Bristol. He rushed home, arriving just behind the ambulance, to find responders performing CPR on tiny Bristol. Her babysitter, a former nurse, had also been performing CPR. The responders were able restore a normal heart rhythm, but Bristol continued to need supportive CPR on her way to the hospital.

Heart Ball Raises Nearly $200,000

Bristol spent five weeks in the hospital with other complications, including seizures, infection and a blood clot in her heart. Doctors were not able to determine exactly what caused Bristol’s cardiac arrest, but she received an implantable defibrillator to protect her against future episodes. She had to relearn to sit, crawl, walk and talk during her rehabilitation, but has since returned to the normal life of a 2-year-old girl. She recently became a big sister. Funds raised will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, health care quality improvement, investment in lifesaving research and public policy advocacy, including advocating for Senate Bill 114 to ensure all Pennsylvania high school students receive Hands-Only CPR training. The York Heart Ball was co-chaired by Sally Dixon, senior vice president of UPMC Pinnacle South Region, and Michael Gaskins, president and CEO of UPMC Pinnacle South Region. For information about the 2020 York Heart Ball, readers may contact Wade Markel at wade.markel@heart.org. Information about the American Heart Association is available by visiting www.heart.org, searching for “American Heart Association” on Facebook and @American_Heart on Twitter or calling 800-AHA-USA1.
