The Hike for H2O has begun and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 16. The virtual hiking and fundraising event gets people outdoors on a trail while creating sustainable change for those in need of access to clean, easily accessible water. More than 2 billion people live without access to clean water, according to organizers. On average in Africa, women and children walk 4 miles each day to gather dirty water that often causes disease and death for the members of their communities. In recognition of this distance, the Hike for H20 requires participants to walk at least 4 miles, anywhere and anytime through Aug. 16. Proceeds will benefit nonprofits Water for Good in Central African Republic, Let Them LOL in Sierra Leone, and Global Samaritans in Zambia. All proceeds and donations will directly benefit well drilling projects. The event seeks 365 participants who will each raise $100. The total of $36,500 will provide lifelong clean water sources in three R060894

For more than 10 years, the foundation has honored York area veterans whose names were approved by the veterans’ committee. Their names, along with the names of more than 400 York area honorees, are permanently carved onto the Court of Valor monument. The event was canceled for several reasons, including the age of many of the honorees and attendees, the problem of how to host all those in attendance while creating the appropriate social distancing, and the possibility of a second spike in COVID-19 this fall. The foundation felt it could not confidently move forward with its program knowing the people it sought to honor could potentially be put at undue and serious risk. The foundation is committed to holding its Court of Valor and SafeKeepers Ceremony in September 2021. For more information, readers may visit www.prospecthill.org.

Supporting The Environment By Buying Local YMCA To Offer Swim Lessons Eco-conscious consumers may go to great lengths to spend their money in an environmentally friendly way. One of the easiest ways to be an eco-friendly consumer is to support local businesses. While many consumers may know that buying local helps to grow the economy by supporting local business owners and creating jobs, they may not realize the positive impact that buying local can have on the environment as well. -Shopping locally reduces the environmental impact of purchases. National chains often have to ship their products from around the world, resulting in
greater fuel consumption and air pollution. Local businesses often buy their supplies from other local businesses; this cuts down on shipping, which again means less fuel consumption and air pollution. -Local businesses often operate from central locations, such as the center of town. Because they typically need less space for their stores, they are able to set up shop in convenient downtown areas. This makes them more accessible to community residents, who may walk or take a short bike ride instead of driving their car or riding a bus in order to shop. This decreases the
customers’ fuel consumption and carbon footprint. -Shopping locally helps to reduce others’ carbon footprints, as well. These dollars support local businesses, which often employ members of the local community, translating to shorter commutes, less highway congestion, and less fuel consumption for the employees. -Buying locally grown foods can protect local wildlife. When local farms receive support, they can afford to stay in operation, meaning that local farmers are less likely to sell their land to developers. This can help protect the habitats of local wildlife.

The Many Benefits Of Shopping Locally means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify the community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that sales taxes are reinvested in the local community. -Those who shop locally may save money. When factoring in travel time and the cost of fuel, buying local may be a more costeffective option. In addition, repeat customers who establish a good rapport with a local business owner may find that he or she is more inclined to price match or work with them to find lower prices through suppliers. -Customers can diversify their home and lifestyle by shopping local businesses. While a larger retailer may offer the same products at each of its locations, a local shop may produce unique items that are not available nationwide. Plus, through their offerings, local businesses often spotlight the unique qualities of their communities. -Local business owners can provide a more personalized experience. They may take care to carry items based on commu-

nity preference, or they may assist a returning shopper with a product or service they know that shopper will appreciate. -Shopping locally helps to promote entrepreneurship. Small businesses are an essential element of an area’s economic growth. By spending their dollars locally, consumers show their support for this segment of the local and national economy. -Buying local can establish local pride. Independent shops contribute to the fabric of a community and what makes it special. Tourists and other visitors will be much more inclined to remember a local shop than a large chain. When travelers want to get a feel for a community, they seek out small, local stores that are more likely to stock a high percentage of locally sourced goods. -Spending dollars locally can attract other businesses. Private and public sector businesses tend to gravitate around anchor stores. Should a local shop be successful, banks, restaurants, salons, and other businesses may move in as well.

Today’s consumers have numerous shopping options at their disposal, thanks to online options and national chains. However, many shoppers are discovering that buying locally has a multitude of charms. The benefits associated with shopping locally are many, and the following are several reasons that shoppers may want to start in their own communities when planning their next shopping excursion. -Shopping locally keeps money in the local economy. For every $100 spent at a local business, an estimated $68 will stay in the community. Locally owned businesses often put a larger share of their revenue back into their communities. Owners of these businesses may be more inclined to employ local residents, and they may also support other neighborhood efforts, such as fundraising initiatives for charities and schools. Those who shop at local stores have a hand in supporting these efforts as well. -Those who shop locally can conserve their tax dollars. Shopping in a local business district

In partnership with Rotary District 7390, WITF announced the winners of the Teacher Impact Awards on June 8. From a field of nearly 250 nominations, one teacher or team of teachers was selected from each of the seven counties within the Rotary district’s coverage area. The teachers were honored for their dedication to their students and community. Rotary District 7390 established the Teacher Impact Awards in 2005 with the goal to promote teaching and learning in its coverage area. COVID-19 added some challenges to the awards’ timeline. The nominations, which were received by Feb. 28, were scheduled to be judged in March. Winners would have been announced in April, with WITF television producers visiting each classroom and conducting interviews. A celebratory banquet was scheduled for May, where teachers and families could see the video features before the television special broadcast in June. In the new school year, WITF plans to work with teachers and schools to create a 30-minute “Teacher Impact Awards” program to air on WITF in November. Then WITF and Rotary District 7390 will celebrate both the 2020 and 2021 Teacher Impact Award winners at a banquet in May 2021. WITF will accept nominations for next year’s Teacher Impact Awards in January 2021 at www.witf.org. The Teacher Impact Award

ATTENTION BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA SUFFERERS! Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Before coming to Madden, I was having pain in my hip and leg from Sciatica, which impacted my daily activities, such as sitting, standing and walking. I was not sleeping well, and could not get comfortable. Now my pain has decreased and I’m now able to move freely and confidently, and my pain level has dropped and I can now sleep well.” -Denise G. Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life…I’ve seen it many times. 4 It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… 4 It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… 4 It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… 4 And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems… and life problems. Here at Madden Physical Therapy the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 1000’s of people who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica…it’s our specialty. So by request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury in the Giant Shopping Center (right next to AAA) on Wednesday, August 5th at 7:00 PM. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: 4 The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… 4 The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… 4 A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) 4 How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… 4 What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call to register at 717-210-9945. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 15 seats available for the event…so if you would like to attend, be sure to register now… Call 717-210-9945.
Looking forward to seeing you there,
