The Many Benefits Of Shopping Locally
EASTERN YORK COUNTY
Today’s consumers have numerous shopping options at their disposal, thanks to online options and national chains. However, many shoppers are discovering that buying locally has a multitude of charms. The benefits associated with shopping locally are many, and the following are several reasons that shoppers may want to start in their own communities when planning their next shopping excursion. -Shopping locally keeps money in the local economy. For every $100 spent at a local business, an estimated $68 will stay in the community. Locally owned businesses often put a larger share of their revenue back into their communities. Owners of these businesses may be more inclined to employ local residents, and they may also

support other neighborhood efforts, such as fundraising initiatives for charities and schools. Those who shop at local stores have a hand in supporting these efforts as well. -Those who shop locally can conserve their tax dollars. Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify the community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that sales taxes are reinvested in the local community. -Those who shop locally may save money. When factoring in travel time and the cost of fuel, buying local may be a more costeffective option. In addition, repeat customers who establish a good rapport with a local business owner may find that he or she is more inclined to price
match or work with them to find lower prices through suppliers. -Customers can diversify their home and lifestyle by shopping local businesses. While a larger retailer may offer the same products at each of its locations, a local shop may produce unique items that are not available nationwide. Plus, through their offerings, local businesses often spotlight the unique qualities of their communities. -Local business owners can provide a more personalized experience. They may take care to carry items based on community preference, or they may assist a returning shopper with a product or service they know that shopper will appreciate. -Shopping locally helps to promote entrepreneurship. Small businesses are an essential element of an area’s economic

growth. By spending their dollars locally, consumers show their support for this segment of the local and national economy. -Buying local can establish local pride. Independent shops contribute to the fabric of a community and what makes it special. Tourists and other visitors will be much more inclined to remember a local shop than a large chain. When travelers want to get a feel for a community, they seek out small, local stores that are more likely to stock a high percentage of locally sourced goods. -Spending dollars locally can attract other businesses. Private and public sector businesses tend to gravitate around anchor stores. Should a local shop be successful, banks, restaurants, salons, and other businesses may move in as well.

Eco-conscious consumers may go to great lengths to spend their money in an environmentally friendly way. One of the easiest ways to be an eco-friendly consumer is to support local businesses. While many consumers may know that buying local helps to grow the economy by supporting local business owners and creating jobs, they may not realize the positive impact that buying local can have on the environment as well. -Shopping locally reduces the environmental impact of purchases. National chains often have to ship their products from around the world, resulting in greater fuel consumption and air pollution. Local businesses often buy their supplies from other local businesses; this cuts down on shipping, which again means less fuel consumption and air pollution. -Local businesses often operate from central locations, such as the center of town. Because
they typically need less space for their stores, they are able to set up shop in convenient downtown areas. This makes them more accessible to community residents, who may walk or take a short bike ride instead of driving their car or riding a bus in order to shop. This decreases the customers’ fuel consumption and carbon footprint. -Shopping locally helps to reduce others’ carbon footprints, as well. These dollars support local businesses, which often employ members of the local community, translating to shorter commutes, less highway congestion, and less fuel consumption for the employees. -Buying locally grown foods can protect local wildlife. When local farms receive support, they can afford to stay in operation, meaning that local farmers are less likely to sell their land to developers. This can help protect the habitats of local wildlife.

Registration is now open for the fall semester. Classes will begin in September. KBI will offer six courses for this semester. Day classes will run from 10 a.m. to noon. The Tuesday morning class will be “How to Hear God’s Voice.” The Thursday morning class will be “Naturally Supernaturally.”
Evening classes will be from 7 to 9 p.m. All evening courses will be conducted at the Pathway Community Church campus, 1731 W. Philadelphia St., York. There will be a cost for each course plus books and handouts. Readers may call 717-968-5521

Keystone Bible Institute’s motto is “The Heart and Mind of Hands-On Ministry.” All courses are designed to encourage, equip and empower people for ministry within their home church, their community and the world at large. Classes are small and interactive.
Historic Prospect Hill Cemetery Heritage Foundation recently announced the cancellation of the 2020 Court of Valor ceremony. For more than 10 years, the foundation has honored York area veterans whose names were approved by the veterans’ committee. Their names, along with the names of more than 400 York area honorees, are permanently carved onto the Court of Valor monument. The event was canceled for several reasons, including the age of many of the honorees and attendees, the problem of how to
host all those in attendance while creating the appropriate social distancing, and the possibility of a second spike in COVID-19 this fall. The foundation felt it could not confidently move forward with its program knowing the people it sought to honor could potentially be put at undue and serious risk. The foundation is committed to holding its Court of Valor and SafeKeepers Ceremony in September 2021. For more information, readers may visit www.prospecthill.org.

The York County Libraries system has announced the winners of the 31st annual “A Celebration of Poetry” contest. Traditionally, the students read their winning entries during a special celebration event at Martin Library in York. Due to the closure of schools and libraries, this year’s event moved online to provide the young poets with another way to share their words. Interested community members can see the 2020 poetry contest winners read their poems on the
York County Libraries YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/YCLpoetry. Students from York and Adams counties were invited to submit an original poem. Twenty-five winners were selected from nearly 400 entries. They were judged on content, style and creativity by a panel of local educators and writers. This year’s judges included Carol Clark Williams, Lori Leckrone, JJ Sheffer, Judy Wolfman, Teddy Nesbitt and Carla Christopher-Wilson.
First-, second-, third- and fourth-place winners were selected in various age groups. The winning poems are published at www.yorklibraries.org and in a booklet added to the library collection. The student winners are as follows, listed in first through fourth places. Grades one and two: Samuel Martin, Torren James, Ruby Delp and Natalie Walker. Grades three and four: Aleja Armstrong, Amelia Dobson, Henley James
and Nathan Kramer. Grades five and six: Gabriella Miller, Ashtyn Parr, Ellis Alas and Alexandra Bussard. Grades seven and eight: Austin Rollman, Serenity Nace, Emma Klinedinst and Drystan Galbraith. Grades nine and 10: Cambria Shrader, David Klopcic, Shayla Toro-Duke and Jacinta Chuidian. Grades 11 and 12: Madeline Myers and Chloe Tarlton jointly in first place, Donasia Ruffin, Neveah Day and Sarah DePasquale.

ATTENTION ARTHRITIS SUFFERERS New Arthritis Workshop Reveals The 3 Keys to Feel Younger and Feel Stronger Naturally Without Aches, Pains and Stiffness. Do you feel like your life is on hold because of everyday aches and pains? Do you have trouble walking, doing stairs or standing for long periods? Do you feel like you need to take a rest when you’re trying to keep up with your family (kids and grandkids)…or even keep up with your dog? Have you been told that your stiff, swollen, achy joints are “bone-on-bone” and there’s nothing you can do about it? Are you looking to stay active? Feel normal again? Feel younger and stronger naturally without medications, injections or surgery? If you are looking to feel younger and feel stronger naturally, then going to the Arthritis Workshop may be one of the best decisions you make. “After coming to Madden, I’m sleeping better and no longer have pain keeping me awake. Getting in and out of a car used to give me pain, but got increasingly better with the help of PT. Thank you for helping me improve my health.” - Christine F. Arthritis can cause you to feel pain, stiff, and achy…making it difficult to move…even with everyday activities.
Arthritis can stop you from feeling normal. • It can force you to take pain medications, Ibuprofen, or even get cortisone injections (which are known to cause other health problems). • Everyday activities like walking, driving, doing stairs, housework or even sleeping can feel difficult to impossible to perform. (Especially in the morning when you first get out of bed). • You can feel irritated, upset or uncomfortable trying to keep up with your family or friends. • You might feel like you’re neglecting your yard, house or garden… • Arthritis can distract you from focusing on what you’re doing (forgetting why you went to the store…or what you were going to do). • And it can take away from your ability to live a normal life…feeling like you have to depend on other people…or having them wait on you while you “just sit for a minute.” Less movement and less living can lead to depression, stress and a life of sitting. Not good. Here at Madden Physical Therapy, we’ve helped thousands of arthritis sufferers who have suffered needlessly with arthritis…it’s our specialty. Most were experiencing pain, aching or stiffness in their back, neck, hips, knees and shoulders…and were looking for natural treatments…
By request to help arthritis sufferers, I’m hosting an Arthritis Workshop right here at Madden Physical Therapy in the Giant Shopping Center in Shrewsbury (right next to AAA) on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at 7:00pm. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: ✔ The Single Biggest #1 Mistake arthritis sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… ✔ The 2 Most Common Types of Arthritis… ✔ A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money). ✔ Why your joints feel stiff in the morning…and what you can do about it. ✔ What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Claim My Seat for the Arthritis Workshop?
Call 717-210-9945 to Register for the Arthritis Workshop and Claim Your Seat.
