York College, 441 Country Club Road, York, will open its fall Film Series and Sustainability and Environmental Studies events, which are free and open to the public. Each program will begin at 7 p.m. The film “The Act of Killing” will be shown on Thursday, Sept. 19, in Humanities Center 218. This film explores the memories and imaginations of those responsible for the murder of 1 million people in Indonesia after the overthrow of the government in 1965. Leslie Dwyer, a professor of cultural anthropology at George Mason University, will present the screening. A showing of the film “Green Fire” and a discussion will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Weinstock Lecture Hall of Willman Business Center. Seventy years ago, Aldo Leopold’s “Sand

County Almanac” was published and became a classic of conservation writing. The documentary “Green Fire” highlights Leopold’s work and its lasting impact. Guest lecturer Curt Meine will present “Aldo Leopold and the Land Ethic in a Time of Rapid Change” on Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Weinstock Lecture Hall. Seventy years after Leopold’s “Sand County Almanac,” agriculture, public planning, and land use are confronting a number of changing demands. Meine is the preeminent Leopold scholar, a conservation biologist, and a historian. The film “The Matrix” will be shown on Thursday, Oct. 24, in Humanities Center 218. Twenty years ago, the world was introduced to “The Matrix,” a landmark science-fiction film drawing upon puzzles and problems from

centuries of Western philosophy. Rory Kraft, York College professor of philosophy, will present the movie and discuss its impact. A showing of the film “Into the Canyon” and a discussion will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Weinstock Lecture Hall. In 1915, Leopold visited the Grand Canyon for the first time. He went on to write the first land management plan for the new national park. In 2016, two friends set out to walk all 750 miles of the Grand Canyon. The film “I Am Cuba” will be shown on Thursday, Nov. 7, in Humanities Center 218. The Soviet-Cuban coproduction “I Am Cuba” presents four stories about life on the island on the eve of the Cuban Revolution. York College professor of Spanish Gabriel Abudu will discuss the film and lead a discussion after the viewing.

Curt Meine will present a lecture about conservationist Aldo Leopold on Wednesday, Oct. 9, as one of York College’s fall Film Series and Sustainability and Environmental Studies events.

action to help end hunger. During the month, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) is partnering with its Hunger Action Month presenting sponsor, PSECU, to host events, awards, and a virtual food drive initiative to highlight the issue of hunger in the area and to spur community action. Through the collaboration, now in its third consecutive year, PSECU will contribute up to $20,000 to the cause and encourage its members living in CPFB’s 27-county region to donate. In conjunction with Hunger Action Month, the CPFB will host its annual Hunger Heroes Awards at the annual Hunger Action Day breakfasts in the food bank’s healthy food hubs in Harrisburg on Thursday, Sept. 12, and Williamsport on Tuesday, Sept. 17. leaders to be “celebrity volunteers and help pack boxes, visit food distribution sites, and raise awareness throughout the month of September. These celebrity volunteers include public officials, corporate executives, nonprofit leaders, media personalities, and others. During Hunger Action Month, PSECU will match donations made through the CPFB’s virtual food drive up to a total of $15,000. This online initiative allows businesses and groups to raise funds to support the food bank’s work. On the platform, supporters can challenge friends and family with a virtual food drive on an interactive website that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for families, veterans, and seniors. Readers may learn more or make a donation at www.central pafoodbank.org/psecu. In addition to virtual food drive donation matching in

tribution to a potential $20,000. According to CPFB, each dollar donated to the food bank equates to six meals, so PSECU’s donation could provide up to 120,000 meals for those in need. Additionally, the credit union will continue promoting ways families can use effective budgeting to make healthy food choices, highlighting hunger issues on college campuses, and volunteering at the food bank. CPFB is one of 200 food bank members of Feeding America, which serves every county in the United States and provides more than three billion meals each year to Americans in need.
