advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.” Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit. Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future. Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn

SMBA Will Launch Concert Season

The York Revolution has announced that average attendance in 2019 increased 5% over the previous year, while total attendance was up 10% over 2018’s figure. Revolution president Eric Menzer said the team’s average attendance climbed from 2,825 in 2018 to 2,971 in 2019. Menzer attributed the per-game increase to new advertising and group sales efforts, a street-level marketing campaign, and an enhanced focus on family-friendly entertainment. When the team’s regular season ended on Sept. 22, a total of 199,045 people had attended 67 Revolution single or doubleheader games, with three of the team’s 70 calendar dates lost to inclement weather. In 2018, the Revolution hosted games on 64 days of its 72-day schedule and drew 180,807 people. The York Revolution Professional Baseball Club is a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. PeoplesBank Park is located at 5 Brooks Robinson Way, York. For more information, readers may call 717-801-HITS (4487) or visit www.YorkRevolution.com.

Mosquito Help Is Available Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Vector Management is reporting York County mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile Virus. Samples containing Culex restuans collected by the York County Mosquito Surveillance Program in various York County locations have tested positive. Additional mosquito surveillance, sampling and larval control are being performed as necessary by the Mosquito Surveillance Program and the Department of Environmental Protection in Springettsbury Township. The York County Mosquito Surveillance Program recommends residents be proactive by inspecting their yards and take a few minutes to clean up and reduce yard clutter. Residents may also purchase a variety of mosquito control and repellent products from most home and garden centers. Performing a community-wide cleanup is the only way to eliminate most mosquito concerns. Residents are urged to contact their local municipality to

help promote cleaning up to reduce mosquito concerns and disease risk. Storm water management systems can sometimes contribute to mosquito issues and are also routinely monitored by the Mosquito Surveillance Program. Residents should also use repellents when spending time outside. For individuals who do not like to use repellents, the department recommends taking an electric fan outside with them. As a last resort, residents can purchase insecticides from garden centers and hardware stores to spray in their own yards, but they need to be sure to follow the label instructions. York County residents may report mosquito concerns through www.westnile.state.pa.us. They can also contact the York County Mosquito Surveillance Program by calling 717-840-2375 or emailing LMGraybill@yorkcountypa.gov. For more information about West Nile Virus and Zika Virus symptoms in humans, readers may call the Pennsylvania Department of Health at 877-PA-HEALTH.

Loucks Publishes Novel Native Yorker Havery Loucks has recently published the novel “Reo Rio: ’60s Illusions,” which tells a coming-of-age story that reflects the myths and realities of the late 1960s. The book tells the story of a Holden Caulfield-like character who transfers to a small rural campus in Ohio, where he assimilates into a diversity of characters. His adventures are sometimes humorous and sometimes irreverent, but they are always tinged with the specters of Vietnam, political upheaval, and cultural changes. Although the setting is mostly in Ohio, there are various references to the York area. Another feature of the book is that every chapter begins and ends with cultural images, Vietnam statistics, poignant quotes, and music icons of the time. The book is available in e-book and paperback forms at https://amzn.to/2jUBXGG. Loucks has degrees from the University of Rio Grande and McDaniel College. He taught English at Central York High School for 33 years and later worked eight years at Shipley Energy. In 2002, he was one of fifteen Pennsylvania teachers chosen to create a website based on the historical markers in the state. For Loucks, this included intensive research on musicians John Coltrane, Mary Lou Williams, Joe Venuti, and Eddie Lange. His research also included the early history of the anthracite coal industry. These efforts contributed to the creation of http://ExplorePAHistory.com. The author has been married to Ruth Loucks for 41 years and has a daughter, Kate Ringhoffer, and a 1-year-old grandson.
