The York Road Runners Club Winter Series will kick off with the Dover 10-Miler on Nov. 11. The series is open to runners of all ages and ability levels and offers eight races in various locations on select weekends in November through March. By Chelsea Peifer

Running with a chill in the air or snow underfoot is all par for the course when it comes to the York Road Runners Club (YRRC) Winter Series. The 2018-19 series is sanctioned by USA Track & Field and features eight races on various weekends in November to March, with one registration fee covering the cost to participate in all eight of the events. Professional chip timing will be included. Coordinator Heather Roe said that

organizers aim to get everybody involved, whether they show up for fun or competition, are young or old, front of the pack or back of the pack, new runners or people with years of experience, or take part as individuals or families. “We want everybody to feel welcome,” Roe emphasized. Each of the races in the series will also include the option of a 1-mile race, set to begin 25 minutes prior to the main event. Roe said that this option is great for children and beginner runners, as See Winter Series pg 2

The Jeff Little Trio and special guest Wayne Henderson will perform Appalachian old-time music with a piano flair during a Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) concert on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York, 925 S. George St. Henderson will also give a talk on guitar building from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Little’s distinctive two-hand piano style is heavily influenced by the mountain flat-picked guitar tradition. His involvement with fiddle tunes, old-time country, and traditional blues dates to his growing up in Boone, N.C., where his family owned a music shop that was a regular gathering spot for musicians. Little has performed at the Smithsonian Institution, the National Folk Festival, American Piano Masters, Merlefest, and many additional festivals, performing arts centers, and music venues throughout the U.S. Little has appeared numerous times on NPR and PBS and has traveled the world See SFMS Concert pg 3

The members of the York Youth Revolution (YYR), a youth group that meets at Faith United Methodist Church (UMC) in Hellam, originally began planning a community fall festival to raise funds for an upcoming summer mission trip, but when one of the students in the group was diagnosed with leukemia, the event’s fundraising focus changed. Now, any donations received at the event will be used to help cover medical expenses for 17-year-old Hellam resident Ryan Dellinger as he enters a third phase of treatment for high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The community fall festival is set to take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Highmount Picnic Woods, 5653 Furnace Road, York. Costs for activities at the event will be by donation, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Ryan’s expenses. “It’s a community event to help a teen in our community. We want the community to rally around him, while at the same time having a nice event for all ages,” stated YYR youth leader Joe Bachman. Hayrides provided by a local farm business will be the main event, according to Bachman. “It’s not just going to be a little loop but a longer ride,” Bachman noted. Food provided by a local catering company will be available to purchase, including hot dogs, french fries, and beverages. Attendees may also make s’mores around a bonfire and partake in pumpkin painting and other crafts. More details are available by searching for “Hellam Hayride” on Facebook. Ryan, who is a senior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, was diagnosed with ALL in June. He has been unable to attend school and is currently completing classwork online with hopes of returning to school for the spring semester. His plans to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout have also been put on hold. According to Bachman and YYR youth leader Kristen Kramer, Ryan has gone through two phases of his treatment plan. “During phase one, Ryan had complications with his port falling out of place, as well as the doctors determining that the type of leukemia he has is resistant to steroids. Unfortunately, the first phase of treatment was steroid-based,” explained Kramer. In the second phase of treatment, Ryan had an allergic reaction to the chemotherapy he received, with anaphylactic episodes necessitating numerous overnight hospital stays. Kramer said that the results from the second phase of treatment showed that he has not yet entered remission, and Ryan is now scheduled for a treatment process known as T-cell therapy. “A team of doctors will be genetically engineering Ryan’s T-cells to fight back against his cancer,” shared Kramer, adding that this means Ryan will be spending six weeks in Philadelphia during the holiday season for this treatment. Ryan is a beloved member of YYR, and Bachman said that the group is hoping to raise as much money as they can to help lower his medical expenses and to help with the costs of traveling and any additional expenses that arise. Although the members of YYR still need to raise funds for their trip to serve with Group Workcamps in Racine, Wis., in June 2019, Bachman said that pitching in to help Ryan instead was a no-brainer for everyone. To learn more about YYR, readers may visit the “York Youth Revolution YYR (York, PA)” Facebook page.
