YCCH has identified that all existing emergency shelter spaces have been operating at less than full capacity in order to protect guests and staff from COVID-19 and to respect social distancing recommendations. This shelter will supplement existing year-round shelter beds and provide overflow space the community uses during a typical winter. This new space will require its own staffing, supplies, sanitation, and intake processes and was set to open in December. The health and human ser-

As of Sept. 22, the fund, launched jointly by the YCCF and United Way of York County, has raised over $1 million and awarded a total of $469,932 in grants. The most recent grants were awarded to New Hope Ministries to continue providing emergency rental assistance funds, York Benevolent Association to help people facing food insecurity, and House of Reconciliation Recovery for food distribution. Artist Innovator Award Announced The Cultural Alliance of York County recently announced the winner of the first-ever Artist Innovator Award, Ambitious Caban. The $10,000 cash award was presented on Oct. 12 at the Spanish-American Multicultural Resource Center’s festival at Crispus Attucks. Caban then gave a musical performance. Caban, born Ana Mercado, is an independent artist from York. She is an entrepreneur, owner of Royal Court Barber Lounge and founder of the annual “Back to School Giveathon.” Her discography includes “Made for This” and “La Barbera.” The Artist Innovator Award was created to highlight and reward the exceptional level of
artistic talent that exists in York County. Caban was chosen as the winner after a panel of peer reviewers and jurors from outside York County and across the nation narrowed down the search to seven finalists and then to a single winner from those seven. Artists who work in any medium and live in York County are invited to create a profile of their work at www.york 365.com in order to be considered for next year’s award. For additional information on the award, including how to be considered in 2021, readers may visit www.culturalyork .org/artistinnovatoraward. Readers may contact rita@ culturalyork.org or 717-8129255 with any questions.

The United Health Foundation is partnering with Family First Health, a federally qualified health center, on a program to improve access to health care for children and their families while widening the reach to serve vulnerable populations in the Keystone State. United Health Foundation’s threeyear, $2 million grant to Family First Health will enhance services at Family First Health’s York location, a school-based health center housed at Hannah Penn K-8 school, home to a significantly underserved population. The grant will help the school’s health center connect students, families, and school staff to expanded
primary care services as well as offer new behavioral health and wellness resources to the school’s students. The program will also deploy health connectors, health care professionals who will provide inhome support to families, such as helping individuals manage chronic conditions. Health connectors will also connect families to the providers at the Hannah Penn Center and help those who are eligible to enroll in health insurance. Family First Health is committed to providing primary medical and dental care, integrated behavioral health and substance misuse treatment services to Pennsylvania resi-
dents regardless of their ability to pay. Although this grant partnership was initiated prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, it is timely during the pandemic because it will allow Family First Health to help underserved populations obtain the care they might not have otherwise received during school closures. Overall, UnitedHealth Group has contributed more than $100 million to fight COVID-19, support impacted communities, and address emerging health care issues related to the pandemic. York Sertoma Club Presents Awards The York Sertoma Club presented its Service to Mankind Award to Angie Garrison of York Haven and its Sertoman of the Year Award to Steve Harman of Wrightsville during a service awards ceremony and luncheon at the Wyndham Garden York on Oct. 15. The Service to Mankind Award is presented to a member of the York community who is not a Sertoma member but who provides exemplary service in the community and the nation. A lifelong resident of York County, Garrison is client services director of architecture at Buchart-Horn Inc. Outside of her day job, she has provided relief on the ground in Puerto Rico after Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 and earthquakes in 2019; helped to form Latinos Unidos of York, an organiza-
tion providing a community for the large Latino population, and serves on the executive board and as secretary; and distributes food to families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic at The Well, a local food pantry, and LifePath. The Service to Mankind Award is a progressive award, and Garrison has also received the Regional Service to Mankind Award for the Allegheny/Canada Region of Sertoma. The award narrative has been submitted to Sertoma Inc. for consideration at the national level in spring of 2021. The Sertoman of the Year Award is presented to a club member who has performed outstanding service in the community and has made exceptional contributions to
the club. Harman has been instrumental in implementing the York Sertoma Club’s mission to provide community services with a primary focus on promoting hearing health. Harman developed policies, procedures, and training to qualify York Sertoma members as volunteers to conduct hearing screenings as part of the Early Childhood Hearing Screening (“ECHS) program, which was initially managed by the SpiriTrust Lutheran Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a Sertoma affiliate. In 2018, SpiriTrust Lutheran announced it was discontinuing its involvement with ECHS. York Sertoma decided to assume total responsibility for the program. In 2019-20, Harman chaired the committee to accomplish this transition, planning every aspect of the program, including scheduling, administration, execution, and ongoing management. The Sertoman of the Year Award is a progressive award, and Harman has also received the Regional Sertoman of the Year Award for the Allegheny/Canada Region of Sertoma. The award narrative has been submitted to Sertoma Inc. for consideration at the national level in spring of 2021.
Angie Garrison (second from left) received the Service to Mankind Award and Steve Harman (second from right) was named Sertoman of the Year at the York Sertoma Club’s service awards ceremony and luncheon on Oct. 15. The honorees were congratulated by Jim Gross (far left), York Sertoma Club president, and Julie Wheeler, York County president commissioner.
