Students Serve Through GROUP Workcamp By Chelsea Peifer

Hundreds of youths from various parts of the country visited eastern York County from June 18 to 22 to serve local residents through a GROUP Workcamp. Coloradobased GROUP Mission Trips facilitates the workcamps so that volunteers can provide home repairs to individuals and families in need. Students in York Youth Revolution, the community youth group at Faith United Methodist Church in Hallam, have been traveling to other states for years to volunteer with GROUP Workcamps, but this year youth leader Joe Bachman’s dream of hosting a site in eastern York finally came true. Several area churches and community groups formed the Eastern York Workcamp Initiative Community Team to sponsor the effort, raising funds to cover the costs of materials and coordinating area volunteers for various tasks such as providing snacks

for the work crews. A total of 188 teenagers from Wisconsin, Ohio, Maine, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, including approximately 25 from the York Youth Revolution, worked together in small groups at 24 homes. Seth Nolt, a youth leader with York Youth Revolution, said that there were more than 100 applications from area residents seeking free assistance with home repair projects, and the community team narrowed it down to 24. “That shows how much need there is,” Nolt remarked. Painting interiors and exteriors, repairing porches, adding wheelchair ramps, and installing trailer skirting made up the bulk of the week’s projects. “There’s been a lot of great feedback. (The residents) love the kids,” Bachman shared. The feeling was mutual, because Nolt said that many of the students visiting from other parts of the country commented that York was one of See Workcamp pg 3

Teachers Paint Positive Messages Across Campus By Chelsea Peifer

The fifth annual Historic Marietta Bike Race on July 7 will offer divisions for men, women, and children, as well as handcycle and recumbent riders. Spectators are welcome to cheer on the riders, and a variety of children’s activities will also be offered.

When students head back through the doors of Canadochly Elementary School in August, they will be greeted by a host of positive, encouraging messages in every hallway and bathroom. Once school ended in June, fourth-grade teacher Jodi Winter and five other faculty members set to work painting the messages on the walls in an effort to encourage kindness. “ We started a ‘choose kind’ initiative during the second half of this school year,” said Winter. The initiative was part of the teachers at Canadochly wanting to help students See Canadochly pg 2

the morning, a giant painting of the words “If you can be one thing, BE KIND” will be one of the first things they see. As they leave to get on the bus at the end of the day, they will walk under the words “You are amazing,” which are now painted above the school’s main exit. “I would do anything for these kids, and that’s what this project is all about,” shared third-grade teacher Angie Mable. “Not all of (the sayings) will land on every kid the first time they see it, but that’s OK.”

feedback,” said Winter. “Many of the parents wrote that, ‘This gave me the opportunity to talk to my kids.’” Painting positive sayings that reflect a growth mindset throughout the school is just another way to reinforce to the students the importance of showing kindness at all times. “We did a lot of sprucing up the building to get the kids excited for a new school year. It’s a little bit of motivation and kindness everywhere they go,” said Winter. When students walk inside from the buses in

differences. “A lot of them could identify with one of the characters in the movie, and that opened up the discussion,” Winter said. Kindergartners and first-graders viewed “A Weekend With Wendell” and “Chrysanthemum,” two movies also based off children’s books with similar themes of kindness. Parents had to sign permission forms for their children to watch the films at school, and Winter said that they also completed a survey afterward. “It was all very positive

talking to us about what they’re thinking. The high school students were really good at just listening,” Winter explained, adding that sometimes adults have a tendency to impose their own feelings or perception into conversation. Prior to the assembly, students in grades two through five watched the recently released movie “Wonder,” which is based on the book by author R. J. Palacio and focuses on the importance of kindness and acceptance toward others regardless of

who were expressing fears after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., in February. After sharing her idea for a kindness initiative and getting approval from principal Mary Jo Moczulski, Winter reached out to the Eastern York High School (EYHS) Student Council to see if any of the members would be interested in visiting Canadochly to speak with students on topics like bullying and kindness and to help them as they processed the school shootings that had happened across the country. Eager to help, several high school

students spoke at an all-school assembly. Next, the elementary school students were split into smaller groups led by a high school student for a discussion time. “They really had a rapport with the kids by the time they left,” remarked Winter. “All the comments I heard were that the kids really appreciated the opportunity,” agreed Moczulski. Earlier in the school year, EYHS had an evacuation due to threats, and Moczulski said hearing about that also scared the elementary students. However, hearing personal accounts from the highschoolers about that incident seemed to help ease the younger students’ fears, said Moczulski. “I picked (high-schoolers) because the kids see us every day and aren’t always

“They’re not meant to be slow. The world speed record was set on a recumbent twowheel bike,” noted Barrows. Check-in and number pickup will be available beginning at 9 a.m. on July 7 outside of Lancaster Recumbent. Number pickup will close 15 minutes prior to the start of each race. The four-corner, 1-mile course is spectator-friendly, and folks from near and far are encouraged to enjoy a free sporting event on the streets of Marietta. Races will begin on West Market Street, proceed clockwise, and feature a chicane on the front stretch. The free children’s races will be 200 yards for children ages 4 to 6 and 600 yards for youths ages 7 to 10. Each participant will receive a prize. Local bicycle shops will offer complimentary safety checks. Additional children’s activities will include a bounce house, music, a bicycle decorating station, and a bike rodeo in front of Susquehanna Waldorf School, 15 W. Walnut St., Marietta. “We’d love for people to come by. It’s a good time, and there’s plenty of trails for everybody to ride too,” Barrows commented. All proceeds from the Historic Marietta Bike Race will benefit the Marietta Parks and Recreation Commission. To learn more, readers may visit www.marietta bikerace.com.

to 10, a handcycle/recumbent race at 2 p.m., and men’s 1/2/3 at 2:30 p.m. Preregistration is available by searching for the event at www.bikereg.com. The races will take place rain or shine. A new addition for 2018, the handcycle and recumbent race is open to all handcycle, recumbent, and adaptive bicycle riders for an open time period. Scott Barrows of Lancaster Recumbent said that last year’s race allotted 30 minutes at the day’s end where the course was open to recumbent and adaptive riders, but this year it was moved up to the middle of the day in an effort to reopen the roadways to vehicles more quickly. “Handcycles and recumbent bikes are not meant just for people with disabilities,” Barrows said, explaining that recumbent simply means “laid back.” The bikes have either one front wheel with two wheels in the rear, or two wheels in front with one wheel in the rear. One advantage to the style is the addition of a back to the seat for support, Barrows said. He added that the bicycles have riders utilizing five muscle groups rather than three, alleviating some of the pressure that is put on a people’s wrists and neck when they ride traditional bicycles.

the friendliest communities they had served in. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, the teenagers worked in small groups of five with one adult crew leader. Other construction professionals from the local region volunteered to provide guidance for work as well. Bachman noted that GROUP Workcamp facilitators divided the crews according to skill level so that there was a blending of individuals with a high level of skills and those with little or no experience. For 16-year-old Rachel Barrett of Celina, Ohio, the week in York County marked her third trip with GROUP Workcamps, following stints in Racine, Wis., and Wilmington, N.C. Her crew rebuilt a trailer porch. “It just feels good to help people. She’s not physically able to do it herself,” said Rachel, explaining that the homeowner has been living alone since her husband died from cancer. In addition to splitting the groups up according to skill level, the students are also

placed with individuals from other youth groups instead of their own. “Sometimes it takes a while for the groups to bond, but our group bonded the second we met,” Rachel said. “I’m going to be talking to these people forever, even though we all live nine hours away.” After wrapping up at the work sites each day, the teenagers headed back to Eastern York Middle School, where they were housed for the week. Each evening included a meal and a program with worship music and a brief teaching time, followed by free time. “We played lots of nine square,” mentioned Rachel. “It’s sort of a cross between four square and volleyball.” “I just love the connections you make with the residents and your team,” said Joy Landolfi, who worked at the home of a woman living with a daughter and two grandsons. Joy’s crew painted the porch, replaced the trailer skirting, and built a new door for a shed. “They’d tell us every day how blessed they were to have us there,” Joy shared.
