Susquehanna Heritage, NPS Partner To Reach Students Susquehanna Heritage and the National Park Service (NPS) recently completed their third Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail (Chesapeake Trail) field trip season for local fourth-grade students. Each year, Susquehanna Heritage receives funding from the National Park Foundation’s Every Kid in a Park initiative in cooperation with the NPS to offer the program to schools at no charge. The field trip was initially developed by Jerry Schenck, a fourth-grade teacher from Wrightsville Elementary School who participated in the NPS Teacher Ranger Teacher program. Since its inception in 2016, all fourth-graders from the Eastern York School District have participated in the program. Fourth-graders from Columbia Borough School District, Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School in Columbia, and York Academy Regional Charter School joined in the program’s second year. The program is based at the Susquehanna

Heritage Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. Lesson materials draw on all three of the Chesapeake Trail’s interpretive themes and address several state education standards. During a scavenger hunt at the Zimmerman Center and its waterfront pavilion, students learn about the travels of Captain John Smith and how he documented what he saw, as well as the history of the Susquehanna River. Students are led on a guided hike to Native Lands County Park, 1664 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, to see the site of a former Susquehannock Indian town and learn how colonization affected how and where they lived. Finally, students take part in a field stream study to learn how each person’s actions affect the health of rivers and streams and the Chesapeake Bay. As part of the experience, students complete a Chesapeake Trail Susquehanna River Edition of the NPS Junior Ranger See Junior Rangers pg 5

Motercycle Ride To Support Veteran Service Canines By Chelsea Peifer

The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce will host the eighth annual Chiques Challenge on Aug. 11. Individuals and two-person teams are welcome to participate in the duathlon event, which will include a run on the Northwest River Trail and through Marietta, followed by a kayak journey on the Susquehanna River.

Mount Joy resident Dave Laughman founded Veteran Service Canines three and a half years ago as a way to connect honorably discharged veterans with servicerelated disabilities with their own service dog free of charge. Those disabilities may include anything from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or physical needs. “Service animals are amazing tools,” said Laughman, who served in the United States Marine Corps for 12 years and on four deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. “There are a lot of veterans, including myself, who have suffered from PTSD. The program, presented in partnership with the York Jewish Community Center, aims to help educators be leaders in building culturally proficient communities within their districts. Annual Festival To Take Place In Washington Boro By Dayna M. Reidenouer

A tradition spanning six decades will continue when the Washington Boro Tomato Festival takes place on Saturdays, July 14 and 21. The event will be held at the Washington Boro Park, which is located at the intersection of Penn Street (Route 999) and Water Street (Route 441). On both nights, food will be available beginning at 4 p.m., and the fun will run from 5 to 9 p.m. Country band Borderline will perform on July 14, and Stu Huggens and the Black Hats will play at the festival on July 21. Event co-chair Dick Schock noted that the latter band’s repertoire contains a mix of country, oldies, and a little bit of everything else. He expressed the hope that the variety of music would appeal to a broader segment of the population. Schock continues to be on the lookout for quality bands that fit within the event’s budget. “I would love to get a bluegrass group in here, he remarked. Affordability is important, as the Tomato Festival is the only fundraiser held by the support group of Blue Rock Fire Rescue. While the fire department is funded by Manor Township and Millersville borough, the support group occasionally assists with purchasing additional equipment, and it hosts an annual banquet for volunteers. Recently, the support group provided money for the acquisition of a new squad vehicle that transports volunteers and water rescue gear and

pulls a trailer with a boat when the watercraft is needed. At the festival, the support group will profit from games and the sale of food. Games will include a dime pitch and stands where competitors may win candy, cakes, fruit baskets, and goldfish. “The kids like that, support group vice president Brenda Miller said of the goldfish stand. She did not indicate whether parents like it. The food options will include hot dogs and sauerkraut, burgers, beef barbecue, sausage sandwiches, and soft-serve ice cream. Chicken corn soup will be available for takeout as well as for eating at the event. Customers may bring their own containers if they wish. A vendor will sell fries and funnel cakes. The tomato sandwiches and BLTs made with locally grown produce are the highlight of the festival. “People wait in line (for a long time); it’s amazing, Miller commented. “They do that because they look forward to it. Folks may purchase locally grown tomatoes and fruit from stands at the festival. Event Tshirts will also be for sale. The festival will offer opportunities to win a 55-inch television, a kayak, an electronic tablet, and 10 $100 prizes. Folks may enter the drawings on both nights, and the winners will be selected in a drawing on July 21. Winners do not need to be present for the drawing. The support group welcomes volunteers to help with facilitating the festival. It will take

approximately 150 people to set up, run, and tear down the event. Anyone who is interested in volunteering may call Schock at 717951-6411 or festival co-chair Carl Miller at 717-684-4184. Additionally, folks are invited to join Blue Rock Fire Rescue. Volunteers are needed to serve in administration, as fire police, with fire fighting, or in special operations: water rescue, brush fires, and collapse team. Interested individuals are welcome

to attend a monthly meeting, held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Station 5, 26 E. Charlotte St., Millersville, or they may download applications at https://bluerockfire.com.

Starview United Methodist Church began in 1851 as Jerusalem Church of the United Brethren near 650 Codorus Furnace Road, Mount Wolf. After a fire destroyed the structure early in 1856, it was rebuilt and

rededicated in June 1856. In 1914, the church was dismantled and the foundation field stone and timbers were transported to the new location at 85 Codorus Furnace Road. By 1950, the church was called Starview

Evangelical United Brethren Church. It became Starview United Methodist in 1968 when the United Brethren and Methodist churches merged. For more information, readers may call Sue at 717-979-7083.

going on for generations.” Readjusting to civilian life can be challenging at best, with unique hurdles to overcome, and Laughman said that service dogs help in numerous ways as veterans learn to establish a new normal in their lives. “Having a dog that is there to serve you 24/7 is huge,” said Laughman, noting that the loyalty of a dog can be healing. Laughman also said that while many combat veterans may tend to feel paranoid about their surroundings - particularly in large crowds - service dogs can be trained to help ease some of that tension. For instance, the canines are taught to “Cover Your 6,” which means they will guard the area in the six o’clock position, or to the rear, of their handler’s viewpoint and warn the handler when someone is approaching. When it comes to

anxiety disorders, Laughman said that service dogs are able to break the handler’s concentration and provide a distraction. Veteran Service Canines has a training facility in York where veterans who apply and are accepted into the program then go to meet and train their canine. Each dog receives basic training beforehand, but Laughman said from there the veteran works with a professional handler to train the dog according to whatever his or her personal needs may be. According to Laughman, an added bonus to this setup is that it provides the participating veterans with a welcomed sense of community. “You miss a lot of the camaraderie you had in the military when you get out,” Laughman reflected. “By combining guys in the same setting who are at different lev-

els, they realize they’re not alone or singled out with whatever they’re going through.” The nonprofit organization works closely with the Lebanon and Coatesville VA medical centers and has connected 35 veterans with service dogs since it began. Each recipient has been a veteran from the central Pennsylvania area, but Laughman said he receives inquiries from all over the country. On Saturday, Aug. 11, the community is invited to the third annual Veteran Service Canine Ride, an event where all proceeds will support the work of the volunteer-run nonprofit organization. The motorcycle ride is coordinated by members of the Marietta Legion Riders, Wrightsville Legion Riders, and AMVETS Riders Post 19. “To combine with multiple organizations and across counties like that is phe-

Two years ago the humidity was oppressive, but last year’s weather was perfect from what I recall.” Individuals may register to complete the race alone or as a team with one participant handling the running portion and the other taking on the kayaking. “District Administration” magazine is honoring 22 schools and districts for education technology initiatives as part of the Schools of TechXcellence program. This is the second year for this national recognition program. TechXcellence was created to recognize schools that have implemented innovative, effective, and replicable technology programs that contribute meaningfully to student or operational success. The June 2018 honorees were selected by the program’s judges from numerous nominations and reflect programs that demonstrate effective and replicable success. The 22 schools and districts honored in this round of TechXcellence have programs that incorporate technology powered by Intel, including laptops, tablets, and 3D printers. Red Lion Area Junior High School is being recognized for its “Instructional Rounds for Innovation” program, in which educators observe their colleagues in the classroom and reflect on one another’s work. Teachers participate in monthly professional development sessions, which are led by the technology integration coach and have been developed, in part, through the observations made during the instructional rounds. The process fosters increased personalization of professional development for educators and meaningful, relevant conversations about instructional practice. The Red Lion Area Junior High School initiative underscores the importance of embracing technology as part

of the educational process. To view more details about this award, readers may visit www.districtadministration.com/ techx.
