Craley Community Celebration To Support Fire Company By Chelsea Peifer
On Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21, the Craley Community Fire Company, 73 New Bridgeville Road, Wrightsville, will host the Craley Community Celebration featuring a book sale, a chicken barbecue and other food, children’s activities, and a craft and yard sale. The public is invited to attend. Thousands of used books will be available to purchase at the book sale, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 20 inside the fire hall and will reopen at 8 a.m. on July 21 and continue throughout the day. Organizer Robert Kline noted that the book sale will replace the one normally held at Craley Days, which historically took place in August. Craley Days is being replaced this year with the community celebration. Donations of quality used books are still being accepted and may be dropped off in front of the fire hall. Additionally, individuals interested in renting a space for the craft or yard sale for a set fee may contact Kline at 717-891-2303.
Subs and pretzel sandwiches will be available to purchase on July 20. A bake sale will take place on July 21, with the chicken barbecue beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing until sold out. Additional food available on July 21 will include breakfast sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, soft pretzels, homemade ice cream, and more. Children may enjoy playing in a bounce house and watching presentations by Marty’s Miraculous Flea Circus, a children’s act with fleas performing circus-inspired tricks. All proceeds from the two-day celebration will support the Craley Community Fire Company. “I think people don’t always understand how fortunate they are to have a volunteer fire company, and the best thing you can do is to support them,” remarked member Betsy Shaw. Craley Community Fire Company, a 100-percent volunteer fire company located in Lower Windsor Township, has been serving the local area since 1914. Individuals with questions about the community celebration may contact Kline at 717-891-2303 or robdkline@yahoo.com.
Susquehanna Stage Company To Bring Back “The Music Man” By Chelsea Peifer
Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” was the very first show produced by the Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) in the summer of 2009. In honor of the theater company’s 10th season, it will be presenting the beloved musical once again. “It was a good show to start the company, and we’re repeating some of the famous things we did in the past,” noted director Jim Johnson. Eight cast members will repeat their roles from the first SSC production of “The Music Man,” including Mount Joy resident Sharon Boyer, who will portray Mrs. Paroo. “It was a lot easier to learn my lines. Remembering how I did it the last time is helping me now,” Sharon said. Playing Mrs. Paroo again is a welcome task for Sharon, who described her character as a fun and opinionated person. See The Music Man pg 5
Stacia Smith (left) and Nick Smith will portray Marian Paroo and Harold Hill, respectively, in the upcoming production of “The Music Man” at Susquehanna Stage Company in Marietta. The show will be performed on select dates from July 20 to Aug. 5.

Mrs. Paroo’s daughter, Marian, will be played by Stacia Smith of Harrisburg. Marian, a librarian, is among the town members who do not quite believe the story that is told by smooth-talking con man Harold Hill when he arrives in tightknit River City, Iowa, and attempts to convince them he is a talented bandleader. He sets out to recruit folks to form a band - only to pocket the cash he receives for instruments and uniforms. Harold Hill - the Music Man himself - will be portrayed by Nick Smith of Harrisburg. Harold’s problems escalate as he finds himself becoming attached to the townspeople and falling in love with bombshell Marian, and he must decide whether to skip town or tell the truth. Stacia, who is married to Nick in real life, said that she feels lucky to have the chance to play across from her husband in the production. Tackling the role of Harold has been fun for Nick, who said that his character’s tendency to be a big dreamer is easy to relate to, but the con man aspect, not so much. “We have a large cast filled with a lot of good talent, and it’s a really good community show,” Nick shared. “It’s really special to be a part of.” Sharon echoed those thoughts, noting that the music throughout the duration of the production will have audiences captivated. “It’s just one of the best all-American shows. The York County Area Agency on Aging will offer diabetes selfmanagement workshops. The free workshops will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays, from July 19 through Aug. 23, at York Commons, 2406 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion. York County residents age 60 and older living with Type 2 diabetes and caregivers caring for someone with Type 2 diabetes can participate in the workshops. The interactive program will span six sessions and the workshops will be taught by certified instructors. Developed by the Self-Management Resource Center, formerly Stanford University Patient Education Program, the health promotion program will provide tools for managing diabetes, dealing with difficult emotions and breaking the symptom cycle that comes with the disease. The program will introduce participants to self-management tools like healthy eating, monitoring blood sugar, action planning and dealing with difficult emotions among others. A companion book and an audio relaxation tape will be provided for all participants. There is no charge for the workshops. Preregistration is required by calling Megan Craley at 717-771-9610.
We Got Your Pak will take place at Windsor Assembly of God, 21 N. Penn St., Windsor, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9.
