PAFFA Members from pg 1 Hope Springs Farm hosts a program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. Volunteer work on the farm is essential to the program, alongside the daily farm chores completed by participants of the day program called “Growers.” Growers’ daily chores include horticulture activities and animal care. They grow and care for a wide variety of plants, including asparagus, raspberries, cabbage, carrots, and many other types of vegetables and fruit. The horticulture activities are intended to provide a connection between Growers’ efforts and the results of growing something. They gain a sense of accomplishment and pride when they grow something they can eat and share with their family and friends. Horticultural therapy is believed to help improve cognitive abilities, socialization, language skills, and task initiation within adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. Growers learn to work independently and as a team, solve problems, and follow directions through this form of therapy. Animal care by Growers

includes petting, grooming, walking, and feeding animals, as well as cleaning out stalls and pastures. Hope Springs Farm is home to two miniature horses, six goats, four sheep, five alpacas, three pigs, chickens, rabbits, cats, and more. Caring for the animals is intended to provide structure to the Growers’ days, as well as a feeling of pride and ownership. Developing bonds with animals is intented to help Growers develop a better sense of self-worth and trust, stabilize their emotions, and improve their communication, self-regulation, and socialization skills. Hope Springs Farm, 201 Trail Road, Hershey, was opened in 2005 by Nina and Neil Rovner for their daughter Mimi and other adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities in the community. Today, more than 50 adults are enrolled in its day program. Growers also volunteer for organizations in the community, such as Meals on Wheels, the Humane Society, and food banks. Fegley Represents Middletown in PIAA’s by Eric Pyles

The “Road to Hershey” from Middletown Area High School to The Giant Center is roughly nine miles but any Blue Raider wrestler looking to make that short trek must first take a longer, needed detour. Luke Fegley, fresh off his 113-pound silver medal win at the District 3-2A Championship, took that needed trip to Wilson High School for the PIAA-2A SE Regional on Friday March 1st and Saturday March 2nd. The result was another podium finish, this one earning the junior grappler a bronze medal and a coveted berth in the PIAA-2A Championships that kick off on Thursday March 7th. By far Fegley’s easiest match of the weekend came in his opening round clash opposite Williams Valley’s Mikey Myers. The Viking junior was unable to go, giving Fegley the easy forfeit victory. Things were understandable more difficult in the quarterfinals, with Fegley winning on the mat. The 4-1 decision over Biglerville’s Ethan Slaybaugh dropped Fegley into the semifinals where Central Catholic’s David Kreidler was waiting. Fegley suffered his only loss of the regional to the eventual second place finisher,

falling by a 4-2 final. It took Fegley 126-seconds to rebound from that loss with Camp Hill’s Christian Doi absorbing the frustration in a pinfall loss. The win sent Fegley to his final match of the weekend where Jace Beegle of Pequea Valley was waiting in the consolation championship. Fegley was able to outlast the Indian sophomore via a 1-0 final to earn the PIAA berth and SE Regional bronze medal. With that third-place finish in the regional tournament, Fegley was finally able to make that coveted trip to the Giant Center for the PIAA-2A Championships. His final weekend of wrestling for the 2018-2019 season kicked off on Thursday March 8th with a first round clash opposite Mifflinburg’s Gabe Gramly. Fegley’s time in Hershey ended up being not-so-sweet, starting with a first period stalling call that set Fegley on a path to a loss. Gramly added a first period takedown for a 3-0 lead heading into the second period. Fegley was able to make up some ground with a 2-1 scoring edge but that 4-2 mark ended as an 8-5 loss after Gramly’s four-point outburst in the third. Fegley rebounded in a major way on Friday morning with a 10-2 victory

over Line Mountain’s Mason Leshock. The junior collected points in all three periods with a pair of nearfalls accounting for the bulk of his scoring. His third period nearfall came with nine seconds remaining in the bout and led into a Leshock reversal that netted the Eagle freshman his only points. The season came to a close a short while later with a 4-2 loss to Cole Bayless of Reynolds in the third round of consolation matches. Fegley’s second and third period escapes left him short thanks to Bayless’ third period push. The fellow junior got to Fegley for a two-point reversal that flipped Fegley’s 1-0 lead to a 2-1 deficit before adding a two-point takedown that broke up the 2-2 deadlock. Fegley was unable to come back from that takedown, leaving him with a 40-6 mark for the season. Two other Blue Raiders joined Fegley in Reading but neither Ryan Berstler nor Joseph Spear will be made the journey to Hershey. Berstler’s SE Regional falls under the near miss category with a consolation quarterfinal loss ending the senior’s season one round shy of a PIAA berth. Berstler’s season is over while Octorara’s Seth Hoopes secured the PIAA berth with his 6-4 win. Berstler

tech fall victory that lasted just five-seconds into the third period. In between those two wins was the match that knocked Berstler out of title contention, a 10-1 loss to the eventual bronze medal winner at 126-pound, Brandan Chletsos of Notre-Dame Green-Pond. Spear, Middletown’s final member of the SE regional contingent found the going much more difficult than his two teammates. So much so that the junior bowed out of the competition after an 0-2 start, leaving him with a 32-8 mark for the season. Spear dropped his first-round bout in the 138-pound fracas by a 10-7 count, falling to Notre-Dame Green-Pond’s Nick Vonelli. A 13-2 consolation loss to Hamburg’s Shane Strausser ended Spear’s shot at Hershey.

An American Hero from pg 1 Re-enactment To Mark Lincoln Funeral Train Anniversary Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train passed through southcentral Pennsylvania as it carried the body of the 16th president from Washington, D.C., to his final resting place in his home state of Illinois. During the solemn procession, the train passed through the grounds that are now Stone Gables Estate on April 22, 1865. To mark the 154-year anniversary, a re-enactment is planned at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, on Monday and Tuesday, April 22 and 23. Bells and whistles, reenactors, and mounted troops will celebrate the arrival of the Lincoln Funeral Car replica, also known as “United States,” when

it travels on the .62-mile of original railbed as the original train did on April 22, 1865. There will be two opportunities for folks to experience the re-enactment, as one-day general admission tickets and two-day VIP experience packages are available. Both days of the event will include plenty of historical sights and experiences, a highlight of which will be the fullscale replica of the original Lincoln Funeral Car. The replica Lincoln Funeral Car will be fully furnished as the funeral car was on April 22, 1865, including a replica of Lincoln’s coffin. The reenactment of the train traveling on the original route will take place on April 22 from 12:05 to 12:30 p.m. Guests may also visit the original railbed built in 1832 and an

the Elizabethtown Rotary Club for its annual Christmas tree sales and the Taste of Western Lancaster County event. DeMolay has been involved with the Taste of Western Lancaster County for all 11 years the event has been held, and the total donations to the library from the coat check amount to $3,975. Since the group’s formation in 2014, the Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers have been drawing freely from old-time, bluegrass, jamgrass, rockabilly, and swing music to create their own brand of high-energy Appalachian bluegrass. The band will perform during a Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) concert on Saturday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Hunter Centennial Barn, 5300 N. Front St., Harrisburg. Gary Antol (songwriter, guitar, and vocals) and Libby Eddy (fiddle and vocals) founded the band. In addition to a busy festival appearance schedule, the band has opened for the Steep Canyon Rangers, Town Mountain, The Black Lillies, Pure Prairie League, Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen, Larry Keel, Jeff Austin, and Cabinet. In 2015, the band released its debut album, “The Lane Change,” a collection of original and traditional songs focusing on journeys through personal relationships as well as life in the coal mining towns of central Appalachia. “White Lightning Road,” the band’s second album, came out in the summer of 2016, and the group’s third studio effort, “Poison River,” was released last year. Also in 2018, the group was an

Official Showcase Artist at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Bluegrass Ramble at World of Bluegrass in Raleigh, N.C.
