Troop 97 Attends Summer Camp Seven Scouts and three adult leaders from Boy Scout Troop 97 traveled to Kunkeltown for a week of adventures at the Trexler Scout Reservation. The camp is located on more than 900 acres donated by decorated war hero Harry C. Trexler in 1928. Scouts had the opportunity to select from an extensive offering of merit badges for personal development, including Climbing, Archery, Rifle Shooting, Kayaking, Fishing, Boating, and Swimming. Scout Matt Brion, Second-Class Scout Bryson Harris, and Star Scout Luke Spangenberg were mentally engaged with Inventing, Exploring, and Fingerprinting merit badges. A historical approach to skills in the Leatherwork, Woodcarving, Pulp and Paper, and American Heritage merit badges tested Star Scout Brayden Harris and Life Scout Leo Nissley. See Troop 97 pg 2

through May. Space is limited. There is a fee to attend, but scholarships are available. To sign up, interested individuals may visit www.childrensplayroom.org. For the first portion of the morning, parents and children play together before the parents head to another room to listen to guest speakers or have a discussion, covering topics like child development, bedtime routines, toilet training, stress management, and positive discipline. “Discipline means to teach, so we’re talking about teaching our children,” said Dolan. “We talk about being kind and firm and how we need both. We can be kind but still be firm.” Learning about positive discipline and practical strategies for how to implement that has been a gamechanger for Cathi Martin, an Elizabethtown mother of four children ranging from ages 10 to 1, who will be attending Children’s Playroom for her eighth year this fall. “(Children’s Playroom) really has made me feel more confident in my purpose as a parent of my kids. It’s given me direction,” said Martin. “(Positive discipline) makes me feel better as a

Vicki Dolan, executive director of Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County, often tells moms and dads that parenting is the most important job they will ever have, and it is also the hardest. Dolan is passionate about setting parents up for success as they navigate that journey, which is why she founded Children’s Playroom, a parenting support group that exists to let people know that there are others who are going through the same parenting difficulties and that they are not alone. “Children’s Playroom gives a safe haven for parents to come and open up with each other,” shared Dolan. Parents and young children - from birth through age 6 - are welcome to register to attend Children’s Playroom once a week at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Sessions are offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and continuing

parent because it’s just a more positive way of handling things.” At first, her husband was apprehensive about the term “positive discipline,” but once she explained and modeled tools she learned at Children’s Playroom - such as asking versus telling - and he saw that they worked, he was on board. Manheim resident and mother of three Lisa Moore said that since attending Children’s Playroom, she has noticed that she yells a lot less - a result that also thrills Dolan, as one of her motivations in offering Children’s Playroom is to help parents realize there are effective ways to discipline children without yelling. Children’s Playroom is something that Martin and Moore say their children all look forward to - or have great memories of - as well. “The guidance they get from Miss Vicki is phenomenal,” Martin said. It also helps with easing children (and parents) into transitions, as parents are only a room away and the staff members provide updates as needed. Plus, the children have fun socializing with peers. “When I asked my son what he misses about Children’s Playroom, he said, ‘My friends,’” relayed Moore. “The moms develop friendships too. You can share what your deepest failures are,

and there’s no judgment,” said Martin. “The support is huge,” agreed Moore. “I didn’t realize how much I would need that support as a stay-at-home parent.” In addition to morning sessions, Children’s Playroom offers a single moms’ parenting program every other Wednesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner is provided, and the group follows the same format of playtime together followed by a time where moms split off for discussion while the children have supervised activities in another room. Readers who would like more information or to register for Children’s Playroom may call 717-945-9348 or visit www.childrensplayroom.org. While on the bus, students should observe the rules and stay seated at all times. The center aisle should also be kept clear of backpacks. Students may walk or bike to school if the school permits. School tends to begin during the morning rush hour, so students must exercise extreme caution when walking or biking to school. They should stay on sidewalks whenever possible when walking. Cyclists should follow the rules of the road, including riding in the same direction as traffic. Families whose children will be walking or biking to school should choose the safest route

together and practice it before the first day of school, advises the security company ADT. Parents and their children should choose an ergonomically designed backpack to enhance safety and comfort. Backpacks should weigh no more than 5 to 10% of the child’s body weight, advises the National Safety Council. Rolling backpacks should be avoided since they are a tripping hazard. With a new school year beginning, students and their parents can discuss school safety so the year starts off on the right foot.

occur while students are boarding and getting off the bus. Over the last 10 years, the NHTSA estimates that nearly two-thirds of school-age pedestrians who were fatally injured by school buses or other vehicles were hurt after being struck while entering or exiting the bus. While at the bus stop, children must remember to stay at least five large steps away from the road and wait to board until the driver says so. When leaving the bus, students should make sure there is no oncoming traffic and wait for a signal from the bus driver before crossing busy streets.

As children head back to school, they and their parents have much to do to be ready for the school year. Clothing and supplies may be top priorities, but families also should focus on safety. To help ensure a healthy and happy upcoming school year, families can keep in mind the following tips in the areas of school bus safety, walking and biking safety, and backpack safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that school buses are the safest way for children to travel to and from school. The majority of school bus-related injuries

Hi, everyone! Here we are in the last full week of the summer ... well, not officially, but in my eyes as soon as September gets here, it is fall. Anyway, did the last three months just do a disappearing act? That was the fastest summer ever! But, as always, I am ready for some good “autumn-ness”! I’m ready for everything being flavored or smelling like pumpkins, apples, and cinnamon! Puppies for Sale A shop owner placed a sign above his door that said “Puppies for Sale.” Signs like this always have a way of attracting young children, and to no surprise, a boy saw the sign and approached the owner. “How much are you going to sell the puppies for?” he asked. The store owner replied, “Anywhere from $30 to $50.” The little boy pulled out some change from his pocket. “I have $2.37,” he said. “Can I please look at them?” The shop owner smiled and whistled. Out of the kennel came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his shop followed by five teeny-tiny balls of fur. One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging, limping puppy and said, “What’s wrong with that little dog?” The shop owner explained that the veterinarian had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn’t have a hip socket. It would always limp. It would always be lame. The little boy became excited. “That is the puppy that I want to buy!” The shop owner said, “No, you don’t want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you.” The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner’s eyes, pointing his finger, and said, “I don’t want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I’ll pay full price. In fact, I’ll give you $2.37 now and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for.” The shop owner countered, “You really don’t want to buy this little dog. He is

never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies.” To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the shop owner and softly replied, “Well, I don’t run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands.” Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Joe Collins of Middletown! Recipe of the Week Easy Salsa Ingredients: 2 14-ounce cans whole tomatoes with juice (or use fresh tomatoes; I think I used about 8 to 10 tomatoes from the garden) 1/2 cup fresh cilantro chopped (my favorite ingredient in making salsa!) 1/2 large red onion, chopped 1 teaspoon garlic, minced 1 jalapeno, chopped (more jalapenos depending on

how hot you want it) the juice of half a lime 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1/4 teaspoon cumin, more to taste 1/4 teaspoon salt, more to taste 1/2 teaspoon sugar Instructions: 1. Put the tomatoes without juice plus all the other ingredients in a food processor and pulse until you get the right consistency. If you like a thin consistency, add the juice and pulse more. 2. Test it and adjust the seasonings as needed. (I never use exact amounts. It really depends on your taste.) 3. Serve this easy homemade restaurantstyle salsa with tortilla chips and enjoy! (I like to spread cream cheese on a plate, pour some salsa on top, sprinkle some grated cheese on top of that and then scoop it up with the tortilla chips! Delicious!) Note: Salsa will keep up to 5 days in an airtight container in the fridge. Tip of the Week Attach a long PVC pipe to your lawn leaf blower so you can clean out your gutter with your feet firmly planted on the ground! Fact of the Week Movie trailers originally played after the movie. They “trailed” the feature film - hence the name! The first trailer appeared in 1913 and was for a Broadway show, not a movie. Joke of the Week A man was traveling down a country road when he saw a large group of people outside a house. He stopped and asked a person why the large crowd was there. A farmer replied, “Joe’s mule kicked his mother-in-law and she died.” “Well,” replied the man, “she must have had a lot of friends.” “Nope,” said the farmer. “We all just want to buy his mule.” Food for Thought Jesus died for you, knowing you might never love Him back. THAT is true love. Have a great week, everybody!

Museum To Host “Lessons In History” Talk

iDual Hydrosta c Drive System iSmart Speed® Control System i3 Year Limited Warranty!

The National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, Harrisburg, will offer the eighth presentation in the 2019 Lessons in History Speaker Series on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 1 to 2 p.m. The program, “The Lincoln Administration and Freedom on the Seas,” will be presented by Dr. Louise L. Stevenson, professor of history

and American studies at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. This talk builds on Stevenson’s recent research and extends the project that she began with her book “Lincoln in the Atlantic World.” Even before New Year’s Day 1863, when the Emancipation Proclamation promised freedom to slaves under

Confederate control, the Lincoln administration had transformed the Atlantic and Pacific oceans into areas of freedom. No longer would American investors and sea captains capture and coerce people from Africa and China onto ships for transit to Cuba and South America, where they would serve as slaves and indentured laborers.

The 2019 Lessons in History program is free to the public. Regular museum admission applies for entrance to the museum galleries. For more information and a complete listing of other events at the museum, readers may visit www.nationalcivilwarmuseum.org or call 717-260-1861.

Farm Market Bus Tour Set Penn State Extension will host its 23rd “Are You Crazy?! retail farm market bus tour visiting markets in Virginia on Tuesday, Sept. 24, and Wednesday, Sept. 25. The tour is designed for retail farm market professionals and will be held at the height of the season to enable participants to learn from their regional farm market peers during their best and most robust season. The event will include behind-thescenes tours and information directly from farm market owners, including unique display and merchandising ideas and information on market expansion and farm transition. The tour will visit seven unique farms in two days highlighting agritainment, farm market development, diversification of products, customer relations, and more. The rolling classroom environment enables market owners and managers to share lessons learned, season highlights, and discuss pertinent topics as participants travel between tour locations. This year, the tour bus will leave from the Penn State Extension office in Cumberland County. The tour fee includes an overnight hotel stay, bus fare, lunch on both days of the tour, and breakfast on the second day. Participants will have dinner on their own on the first day of the tour. To register for the bus tour, readers may call 877-345-0691 or visit https://extension.psu.edu/are-you-crazy -retail-farm-market-bus-tour. The deadline for discounted registration is Friday, Aug. 23. After Aug. 23, registrations will be full price.
