Café Opens At Masonic Village On Nov. 5, Amy Kreamer opened Whisk Café, her third restaurant and her first solo culinary venture. Whisk Café is located in the Sycamore Square Marketplace, 98 Masonic Drive, at the edge of the Masonic Village campus in Elizabethtown. Kreamer has co-owned Lucky Ducks Bar and Grille in Elizabethtown for eight years, and a second location opened in Hershey over a year ago. Whisk Café, a different style of eatery, is dedicated to Kreamer’s parents, who inspired her interest in gourmet cooking. The café features a local farmto-table concept, with fruits and beef from the Masonic Village Farm Market, meats from Groff’s Meats, and fresh eggs from a local hatchery. In addition to fresh baked goods and seasonal desserts, the café features breakfast offerings including eggs Benedict with fresh hollandaise sauce and sea-
sonal French toast with apples, peaches, or strawberries. Whisk Café serves beverages from Red Rooster Coffee and Swallowtail Tea from Floyd, Va., as well as a variety of expresso beverages, smoothies, and mocktails. The lunch menu is composed of lighter fare such as salads, sandwiches with deli meats or fresh chicken salad on a croissant, and a tart of the day with fresh fruit. The café also offers a children’s menu. Catering is also available. In addition to indoor seating, customers have the option of dining outdoors seasonally and ordering online at www.thewhiskcafe.com. A gift shop area offers local merchandise. The restaurant will available to rent for private parties. Whisk Café is open daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Merry Christmas, everyone! May this Christmas bring you the gifts of peace, hope and love! Sending each one of you my heartfelt wishes of joy that never ends! Christmas Reminders When we see a wreath, let’s remember that God’s love is never ending. When we see the lights, let’s remember that Jesus is the light of the world. When we see candles, let’s remember that our lights, however small, shine brightly enough to spread to those around us. When we see presents, let’s remember that God gave us the greatest gift of all in His Son, Jesus Christ. When we see a Christmas tree, let’s remember a tree on top of a hill called Calvary. When we see snow, let’s remember the One who cleanses our sins in a way that makes them pure white. When we sing carols, let’s remember the importance of making a joyful noise unto the Lord. When we sit down to Christmas dinner, let’s remember that Jesus is the bread of life. When we see all those around us in need, whether physically, financially, emotionally, or spiritually, let’s remember that Christmas really shouldn’t be limited to one season of the year. God’s gift was for all seasons, and every time we share that gift, it’s Christmas! Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! - 2 Corinthians 9:15 Jesus’s Christmas Wish An original poem written by Middletown’s Leda Burkett To children, Christmas is the thought of Santa, The train that’s under the tree, The stockings they hang, the toys they get, The excitement of all they see. To some it’s a great big time With parties, gifts, and wine. And, yet, the Christ for whom it’s meant, For Him they have no time. This year as you do your shopping, Put Christ first, for this is His day. You ask, “How can I please Him?” And this is what I’d say:

If everyone would read His word, Open their hearts and just believe, This would be the nicest gift Our good Lord Jesus could receive! Mommy’s Letter to Santa Dear Santa,
I’ve been a good mom all year. I’ve fed, cleaned and cuddled my children on demand, visited the doctor’s office more than my doctor, and sold 62 cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground. I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my son’s red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I’ll find any more free time in the next 18 years. Here are my Christmas wishes: I’d like a pair of legs that don’t ache (in any color, except purple, which I already have) and arms that don’t hurt or flap in the breeze but are strong enough to pull my screaming child out of the candy aisle in the grocery store. I’d also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy. If you’re hauling big ticket items this year I’d like fingerprintresistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music, a television that doesn’t broadcast any programs containing talking animals, and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone. On the practical side, I could use a talking doll that says, “Yes, Mommy,” to boost my parental confidence, along with two kids who don’t fight and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools. I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting, “Don’t eat in the living room” and “Take your hands off your brother,” because my voice seems to be just out of my children’s hearing range and can only be heard by the dog. If it’s too late to find any of these products, I’d settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container. If you don’t mind, I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely. It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family. Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back. Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the door and come in and dry off so
you don’t catch cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table, but don’t eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet. Yours always, Mom P.S. One more thing: You can cancel all my requests if you can keep my children young enough to believe in Santa for many years to come.

An Early Way To Welcome 2020 On Tuesday, Dec. 31, the community is invited to ring in the new year a few hours early at Welcome 2020, a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration organized by volunteers from Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown, and the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The event is set to take place from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will culminate with the annual raising of a lighted star outside of the church at 7 p.m., immediately followed by a professional fireworks display. According to volunteer Phil Clark, the timing is significant because at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Elizabethtown, the clock strikes midnight for residents welcoming the new year in Letterkenny, Ireland, which is the sister town of Elizabethtown. Hosting a party earlier in the evening also provides an alternative option for families and anyone who would rather not stay up late for ringing in the new year. “We have an LED light sign with the year under the star, and every year when the star goes up we get a line of people taking pictures with it,” remarked Clark.
“That is a neat tradition we didn’t even plan on.” From 3 to 7 p.m., chicken barbecue dinners prepared by Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken will be available to purchase at the church. Meals will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, fruit, and a bottle of water. Advance tickets for the chicken dinners may be purchased at the church or by calling 717-367-2786. Homemade soup will also be for sale at the church, as well as commemorative bottles of root beer made by Moo-Duck Brewery in Elizabethtown and bottled by church volunteers. Proceeds from the sales of chicken barbecue dinners, soup, and bottled root beer will help to cover the costs of hosting the event. For many years, Christ Lutheran members have sold root beer floats at a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair as a fundraiser, and in recent years proceeds from that effort have helped to fund the New Year’s Eve event. Aside from those food and beverage options, everything at the event is offered free of charge. At Winters Heritage House Museum, people can observe hand-spinning and hearth cooking demonstrations. Children’s

activities and crafts will also be offered. Free activities at the church will include bingo with prizes, games, balloon twisting, face painting, marshmallow roasting, and music provided by a disc jockey. Free hot dogs, popcorn, and hot cocoa will be available. Emergency vehicles including a fire truck, a police car, and an ambulance will also be on-site for people to see. “It’s a very family-friendly and

Winter Season Driving News s 20 Inn 2019-20
to know the difference between a weather watch and warning. A watch means there is increased risk of a hazardous weather event, but its occurrence, location, or timing is still uncertain. Drivers should pay attention to forecasts and plan out what they will do if or when it occurs. A warning means the weather event is imminent or is happening. People should take immediate action to protect lives and property. In addition, snow squalls can often produce dangerous and deadly travel hazards on otherwise clear winter days. The National Weather Service now issues “Snow Squall Warnings,” which alert drivers of whiteout conditions and slippery roadways, so motorists can avoid traveling directly into these dangerous squalls. For more information on PennDOT’s winter preparations and additional winter-driving
resources for motorists, readers may visit www.PennDOT.gov/ winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can access travel information on nearly 40,000 state-maintained roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com. During the winter, motorists can find plow truck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 950 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a free smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.
generous donations from taxpayers who designate all or part of their Pennsylvania Personal Income Tax refund to support Pennsylvania military personnel and their families and by those who donate online or privately by mail. The VTF issues grants to statewide charitable organizations that assist veterans, veterans service organizations, and county directors of Veterans Affairs to help veterans in need of shelter and necessities of living. The VTF also issues temporary assistance grants to individual veterans that have qualifying financial needs. The grants are funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily make a donation when applying for or renewing their driver’s license or photo identification card and renewing a motor vehicle registration, from proceeds generated by the
sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates, and through private donations by mail. Residents’ Welfare Funds at the DMVA’s six veterans homes help to keep the residents active and healthy by providing activities, trips, and entertainment. Donations are made online or through private donations by mail. The six Pennsylvania veterans homes and their locations are as follows: Delaware Valley Veterans’ Home (Philadelphia), Gino J. Merli Veterans’ Center (Scranton), Hollidaysburg Veterans’ Home (Hollidaysburg), Pennsylvania Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Home (Erie), Southeastern Veterans’ Center (Spring City), and Southwestern Veterans’ Center (Pittsburgh). Located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Lebanon
Donating To Charity Wisely Donations from private citizens are the lifeblood of many nonprofit organizations. Without donations from millions of well-intentioned individuals, many charities would not be able to fulfill their missions. When donating to charitable organizations, donors typically want to know their donations will make a difference. With a little pre-donation research and a few smart giving strategies, prospective donors can make sure their donations ultimately end up doing the most good. Donors should refine their online searches. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends searching online for a cause one cares about but adding certain terms to the search before choosing a charity. For example, if someone is passionate about helping the
homeless, instead of entering “charities for the homeless” into the search engine, search for “highly rated charities for the homeless.” Such a search may uncover red flags about certain organizations and direct donors to the most reputable charity possible. A charity should be vetted before donating. Transparency is important when choosing a charity. A charity should willingly share information such as how donation dollars are spent and the programs that have been established to help it meet its mission. Such information should be readily available on the organization’s website. The FTC recommends donors learn how much of their donations will be used to provide direct support to the programs. The FTC also recommends being sus-
picious of charities that do not provide detailed information about their missions and programs. Vetting charities is important, but donors should not feel like they have to do all that legwork on their own. Various organizations, including Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator, and CharityWatch, exist to protect donors and ensure they give wisely. Local government regulators also may be able to provide information about charities to help donors avoid fraud. Charitable donations help millions of people every day. Donors can protect themselves and ensure their money is used wisely by doing their homework before giving to nonprofit organizations.

NEW YEAR’S EVE Tuesday, December 31
DMVA Posts Reminder The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) reminds Pennsylvanians that they are welcome to give to programs that support the commonwealth’s veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families. Pennsylvanians can contribute to any of four key programs administered by the DMVA. The four tax-deductible programs administered by the DMVA are Military Family Relief Assistance Program (MFRAP), Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF), Residents’ Welfare Funds, and Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. The MFRAP provides financial assistance, in the form of grants, to eligible Pennsylvania service members and their eligible family members who have an immediate financial need based on circumstances beyond their control. driving requires reducing driving speed to well below the posted limit, even in an all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicle. If motorists encounter snow- or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. Motorists should prepare for potential bad weather by ensuring they have supplies in their cars before heading out: food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, a cellphone charger, hand or foot warmers, a windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies. It is also important for drivers

It is believed to be the largest veterans memorial located in any of the national cemeteries. Donations are accepted online or by mail to help fund the maintenance and repair of the memorial. When an online donation is made, donors may choose to enter honoree information and a plaque in his or her honor will be displayed on the Virtual Donor Wall. Online plaques will show that donations have been made in honor of, in memory of, or on behalf of someone. To make a donation online or by mail for any of these four taxdeductible programs or to learn more about each one, readers may visit www.donate.dmva.pa.gov.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), and Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) recently outlined the commonwealth’s plans for winter services, highlighting the tools the public can use to successfully prepare for the season. This winter, the PTC is prepared to battle the elements as well, with 380 trucks, plows, and salt spreaders and 400 licensed equipment operators ready to activate 24/7 staffing this fall. Its goal is to keep the turnpike system as free of snow and ice as possible, but motorists too have a responsibility to know their own winter driving skills and their vehicle’s performance. Winter storms are a fact of life in Pennsylvania, and drivers should never assume roads will be free of ice and snow during and after a blizzard. Wintertime
