Max Francis, a member of Boy Scout Troop 20, recently completed his Eagle Scout service project. For his project, Max led the construction of a 28-foot-long pedestrian bridge connecting Leg Up Farm’s overflow parking field to its main facility and easing pedestrian traffic between the two areas. Leg Up Farm used the pedestrian bridge for the first time during its 2018 Fall Fest,

held on Oct. 13, 2018. Max, a ninth-grader at York Suburban High School, is the son of Steve and Sallie Francis. Troop 20 meets at St. John Lutheran Church in York. The construction mentor was Kevin Inch, owner of Construction by Inch. Additionally, many local businesses, as well as East Manchester Township and many volunteers, helped construct and fund the bridge.

A Sweetheart Dinner/Dance will be presented by members of the York Youth Revolution (YYR), a community youth group that meets at Faith United Methodist Church, on Saturday, Feb. 9. The event will begin with dinner at 6 p.m. at the church, located at 126 E. Market St., Hallam. The meal will include roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, a roll and dessert. A dance featuring the band Modern Age will follow immediately across the street at the Hellam Fire Company, 163 E. Market St., Hallam. Youth group leader Joe Bachman, event organizer, emphasized that the eighth annual event is open to couples as well as individuals. “It’s for anybody,” he stated. “Our hope and prayer is to allow couples and singles to enjoy a great meal and dance or just listen to Modern Age. They play music from the ’70s to the present. They began as a group in the ’70s and have established quite a following.” There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. “We began asking for freewill donations instead of money for tickets because we felt that there are those that would enjoy a great evening out and maybe couldn’t afford a lot,” Bachman explained. “There are others who are fortunate enough to give us a little more. It always balances out, and it

We just want to provide a community event where people can have a good time.” Bachman said the event is ideal for adults of all ages, including senior citizens. “My mom, who is a widow, enjoys coming,” he said. “There are people there to fellowship with and she gets to talk with old friends. That’s what it’s all about - coming together.” Donations will be used to benefit the YYR’s 2019 mission trip. “The Sweetheart Dinner/Dance is our largest fundraiser for our mission work in Racine, Wisconsin,” Bachman explained, noting that in the summer of 2018 youth groups from many different states came to the Hellam, Wrightsville and Red

Lion areas to help out in the local community. “One youth group brought 50 young people from Wisconsin. They brought a tour bus that was seen all through our community that week dropping youths off to work in our neighborhood. This summer we would love to return the favor and help those folks in Wisconsin.” Bachman said that members of the YYR volunteer with Group Workcamps Foundation, a Christian youth mission trip organization. More information about the organization is available at https://groupmissiontrips.com. “Everything we do in our group is about community service. operate, strengthen, and expand the community recreation programs formerly provided by Hellam Recreation Commission. The EYRA became a reality due to the successful completion of a Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DNCR) Bureau of Recreation and Conservation Peer-to-Peer Technical Assistant Project. This project helped EYRA with the tasks necessary to begin its operations. By submitting a successful Circuit Rider grant application to DCNR, the organization was able to recruit and hire a full-time parks and recreation director. Cirilo, a certified parks and recreation professional (CPRP), was hired as the first director in mid-November. As EYRA is an organization with one full-time employee, Cirilo is tasked with coordinating sport leagues, activities, and programs; managing special events and facilities; conducting marketing efforts; writing grants and securing funding; and communicating with volunteers and all those involved. “I am honored to have the opportunity to help advance and inspire the direction of park and recreation services and facilities in the area,” stated Cirilo. “With this new venture, we are certainly at a point of change, and I am so grateful for the support and encouragement I have received so far. “I am valuing the opportunity to make connections with the municipalities, school district, and local businesses,” Cirilo added. “I am also excited to build partnerships and network with neighboring recreation professionals. As seamless as we intend transitions to be, I fully appreciate that there will be periods of adjustments, but given time, the pieces will come together.” EYRA’s goal is to serve the Eastern York School District area by offering programs, services, and facilities that appeal to a wide audience, benefit residents of all ages and abilities, and create a community that fosters an ideal place to live, play, and work. The organization is in the process of establishing a website. In the interim, residents will begin to learn more about EYRA via municipal newsletters, social media (Facebook and Twitter), and road signs. The EYRA has established an email address at eyrecauthority @gmail.com. For additional information, readers may contact Cirilo at 717-487-5295 or eyrecauthority @gmail.com.

Family Receives Christmas Gifts

This Christmas, employees of First Capital Federal Credit Union once again “adopted” a family from the Bell Family Shelter, a 30-day emergency shelter serving homeless families in York County. On Dec. 24, 2018, members of the family stopped by First Capital to express their appreciation and to accept presents. Presenting the gifts were (front, left) Tara Houser, vice president of marketing; (center, kneeling) Kelly Casteel, training specialist; (back, from left) Sheryl Keaton, member service receptionist; Katie Dethloff, AVP of consumer lending; Lori Matos, member service representative; Susan Theophel, loan counselor; and Candy Lauer, member service representative supervisor.

Time-Saving Suggestions Posted Whether it is to spend more time exploring the great outdoors or enjoying the company of family and friends, everyone wants to find more time in their busy schedules to do the things they love. While work at home and at the office always seems to be beckoning, no one wants to be tied down by housework and/or a to-do list. Though it is impossible to add more minutes to the day, several tips can help people save time. First, people should clean as they go. When it comes to keeping a home clean and organized, it pays to do a little bit at a time rather than spend a whole day or weekend on chores. Wipe down the shower after each use to avoid the build-up of mold and mildew. Dust surfaces in the closet regularly to keep items and clothes clean longer, and wipe kitchen surfaces while cooking. Regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping

a home tidy and ready for spurof-the-moment gatherings. Second, avoid shopping on weekends. People who work a typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule often do their shopping on weekends because that is when they have the most time on their hands. But since that is true for most people, long lines and crowded spaces can be expected when shopping on weekends. People are encouraged to try to carve out some time on a weekday evening, especially a Monday or Tuesday, to free up precious weekend time and avoid long lines. Third, simplify meal prep. Eating healthy, nutritious food does not need to be sacrificed when pressed for time. Instead, look for low- or no-prep meal options at the grocery store that can serve as a standalone meal or as a base with a protein option. Golden Plunger awards - which are actually golden plungers are given to the individual and the team that have raised the most money. All proceeds will support the 360 athletes of the SOYC, which provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Polar Plunge helps to ensure that all training and competition opportunities will continue to be provided free of charge to the SOYC athletes and their families. The 15 sports programs are supported by hundreds of volunteers and contributions

from the community. Anyone who would like to contribute toward SOYC without taking a dip in the icy cold river is welcome to donate at the aforementioned website or to attend as a chicken plunger someone who supports the plunge but does not go into the water. The infamous chicken dance, set for 11:15 a.m., will be performed by all of the chicken plungers in attendance. Liggins-Smith said that last year’s 10th anniversary Polar Plunge raised a total of $76,000 for SOYC. “The weather was actually nice, if you consider 34 degrees nice, and that was the air temperature,” recalled Liggins-Smith. “The water temperature was about 21 degrees.” Nevertheless, approximately 750 plungers stepped up to - or into - the challenge.

Roast Beef Dinner Set The WELL, a ministry of Immanuel United Methodist Church, will hold a buffetstyle roast beef dinner on Saturday, Jan. 26, at The WELL, 32 Water St., Glen Rock. It takes a special person to willingly run into the frigid waters of the Susquehanna River in February, but year after year the York County Polar Plunge draws a sizeable crowd of willing “plungers” - as the participants are affectionately dubbed. The 11th annual York County Polar Plunge is set to take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, along the Susquehanna River in front of John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville. Not only are folks willing to dip into the waters amidst sometimes freezing temperatures, but many also go all out and participate in the annual costume contest. “Last year the winner of the most original (costume) was a tree,” recalled organizer Robyn Liggins-Smith, adding that the costume contest is her favorite portion of the event. “ We have superheroes, ballet dancers, swimsuits, Hawaiian dancers, W here’s Waldo … just about anything you can think of has joined in the costume contest,” Liggins-Smith shared. York Revolution mascot DownTown joins the fun each year by helping to entertain the crowd, going so far as to actually plunge in his costume. Another staple is the team that starts the waves of plungers, which is made up of current and retired police officers from throughout York County and led by Lt. Dan Aikey of the York County Police Department. Registration and sign-in will open at 9:30 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and the costume parade and contest at 10:45 a.m. Awards will be given for the best costume and most original costume. Plungers will begin assembling in waves around 11:45 a.m., and the plunge will start at noon. Special Olympics PA York County (SOYC) athletes will lead each wave of participants to the river. Plungers may dip in just a toe or go all in for a total of three minutes. Heated tents will be set up for participants to change into dry clothes afterward. Coffee, hot chocolate, water, and snacks will also be available. To register in advance which organizers recommend for anyone interested in avoiding waiting in long lines - as an individual or a team, readers may visit www.specialolympics yorkcounty.org. “There is no cost to register - everyone and anyone can plunge,” explained Liggins-Smith. “However, this is a fundraiser, so we ask that

To make the cookies: Combine the butter, hot chocolate mix, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and espresso powder in a mixing bowl. Beat until the mixture is smooth. Add the egg and vanilla, and beat until thoroughly combined. Weigh out the flour, or measure it by gently spooning it into a cup, then sweeping off any excess. Add the flour to the cookie mixture, stirring to combine. Mix in the chips and cocoa nibs. Drop the dough by teaspoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets - a teaspoon cookie scoop works well here. Space the cookies at least two inches apart. Bake the cookies for 8 to 9 minutes, until the surface is set, but the cookies aren’t quite fully baked. Take the cookies out of the oven and press a chocolate disk into the center of each cookie. Return the cookies to the oven for 1 to 2 minutes longer, until the chocolate begins to turn shiny and softens. Remove the cookies from the oven once again, and sprinkle the melted chocolate disk with your garnish of choice. Allow the cookies to cool right on the baking sheet until the chocolate disks are set. Store well-wrapped cookies at room temperature for a week or so; freeze for longer storage.

Restaurant reservations, red roses and sparkling jewelery all are par for the course on Valentine’s Day. However, nothing may epitomize the holiday more than a decadent chocolate treat. When heartshaped chocolate boxes are not enough, resourceful gifters can turn to homemade desserts to really capture the spirit of Valentine’s Day. This recipe for hot cocoa cookies marries the decadent taste of chocolate with the notion of a warm and soothing hot cocoa that’s ideal for a chilly February day. Even though the premium cocoa mix is baked right into the recipe, don’t hesitate to enjoy a steaming mug of cocoa on the side as the perfect complement to this rich and tasty cookie.
