Comfort Stations Provide Shelter look for organizations within their individual municipalities that may be able to provide cooling stations and/or heating comfort stations. EMCs have found that faithbased community organizations (FBCOs) are best able to provide residents with a place to go. Therefore, local EMCs attempt to coordinate heating and/or cooling comfort stations with FBCOs. Memorandums of agreement with FBCOs are written by EMCs and signed by local elected officials and the officials of the FBCOs, which agree to be available to
shelter people on short notice. These comfort stations are not required to provide meals and/or overnight accommodations, but they do have chairs, tables, bathroom facilities and water fountains. In the event of a known long-term disruption to power, mass care shelters may be established by the local chapter of the American Red Cross, but may take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours to be set up. More information is available by contacting one’s local municipal government office.

During the extreme heat of summer and the ice and snow of winter, there is always the possibility of disruptions in electricity to power heat and/or air conditioning in homes and businesses. These disruptions may go on for hours and even days. Although everyone should be prepared for emergencies and to sustain themselves for up to 72 hours, this is not always possible, especially for the elderly, those with access and functional needs, or families with small children. College Creates Investment Fund York College has created the Weinstock Student Venture Investment Fund (SVIF) thanks to a gift from Norm Weinstock, a 1968 graduate of York Junior College and a York native. Weinstock and his wife,
Sheila, have given to organizations including York College. In the fall of 2011, they used a charitable gift annuity and pledge of cash to fund the Weinstock Auditorium in the college’s Willman Business Center. In addition, Weinstock facilitated York College’s $500,000 proposal to the NASDAQ Foundation, which resulted in the creation of the NASDAQ Trading Laboratory. More recently, Weinstock decided he wanted to do something additional for the College after meeting with Dr. James Norrie, dean of the Graham School of Business. Weinstock now lives near Boston, and a friend of his is involved with the Martin Trust

Center for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Entrepreneurship, which provides the expertise, support, and connections MIT students need to become effective entrepreneurs. Weinstock provided a $100,000 gift to create the Weinstock Student Venture Investment Fund at York College. SVIF will provide microinvestments up to $5,000 for selected student- or alumni-led start-ups. Each year, a competitive process will be used, including the involvement of an external investment board of established entrepreneurs, to select winning ideas. Funds are advanced as a loan with expectations of future returns and are associated with access to entrepreneurial coaching, mentoring, and business development support. Weinstock has chosen to remember York College as he celebrates his 80th birthday in March, asking family and friends to donate to the SVIF rather than purchase a gift.

The organization’s leaders are board chair Anthony Campisi, board vice chair and 2019 campaign co-chair William Yanavitch II, treasurer Erin Casey, secretary David Kennedy, 2019 campaign co-chair Jared Bean, fund development chair Paula Vitz, allocations committee chair James K. Fowler, board director Thais Carrero, board director Loren Kroh, board director Keith Noll, board director Frances “Fran” McCabe Polk, and board director Giana Van Nice. Carrero is new to the Cultural Alliance board of directors. She is a native of Puerto Rico and has lived in Pennsylvania since 2016. She is the deputy communications director for the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Her bicultural background and focus on community collaboration have led her to a number of volunteer opportunities and community leadership roles. She serves on the board of Latinos Unidos of York as well as with York XL and York Young Professionals, and she is a member of United Way’s Emerging Leaders Society. She is committed to engaging communities and organizations in conversations to create solutions for the problems facing local neighborhoods. Kroh is new to the Cultural Alliance board of directors, but he has served as an annual campaign volunteer for the last several years. He is a managing member of Corvus, a start-up
company formed to develop a web-based system, Campus ToolKit, to improve retention rates and student success of postsecondary students. He has served on several community organization boards, including the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, and received the W hite Rose Achievement Award for his service from the York County Economic Alliance in 2018. Noll is a senior vice president of WellSpan Health and the president of WellSpan York Hospital. He also has corporate responsibilities for supply chain services and graduate medical education. Noll attended Penn State University, receiving a baccalaureate degree with honors in health planning and administration. He then entered the University of Minnesota’s graduate program in hospital and health care administration, graduating summa cum laude. After starting his career at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 1989, he moved back to his hometown of York in 1998 to join WellSpan Health. Noll volunteers his time as a trustee and chair on several local, state, and regional boards of directors, such as the York College of Pennsylvania, Penn State York, York County Economic Alliance, the Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers, and the Regional Board of the American Hospital Association. Polk was born and raised in York and graduated from York Suburban High School. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in arts education from Carnegie Mellon University. Professionally, Polk taught art in Washington, D.C., and York city public schools. After both
teaching positions dissolved, she joined the Pfaltzgraff Company with positions in sales, marketing, and public relations. Upon retirement, she returned to her artistic roots, taking classes at York College. In the community, Polk served on boards of several entities, with a focus on arts and culture organizations. She has been president of YorkArts, now Creative York; president of the Pennsylvania Arts Experience; and chair of the York County History Center board of directors. Van Nice has experience as a human resources director in large manufacturing and distribution, software development, and retail businesses. She earned a master’s degree in human resources management from Keller Graduate School and a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the University of Southern California. She has lived in Japan, the Czech Republic, and Costa Rica and served more than 10 years in the U.S. Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. Living on a working farm that raises grass-fed and grass-finished beef, Van Nice loves all art related to agriculture and the rich history of York County. She is married to Daniel, and together they have four children. In her spare time, Van Nice teaches human resource management to graduate and undergraduate students at both SNHU and UMUC. What is the mission of Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? The Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association is dedicated to the improvement and preservation of the ecology and aesthetic qualities of the Lower Susquehanna and Juniata watersheds. The Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper (LSR) works as an alliance builder, diplomat, and educator, but also, when the situation calls for it, an unrelenting defender and advocate of our right and the river’s right to be healthy and prosperous. The LSR utilizes education, chemical and biological monitoring, pollution patrols, partnership building, public events, research, and legal action to improve the health of the Susquehanna’s waterways. The LSR assists the government by reporting noncompliance of the law and follows through where environmental protection agencies are unable to do their job due to politics or funding issues. The Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association serves all communities in the Lower Susquehanna and Juniata watersheds, as well as the Chesapeake Bay, which includes roughly 4.5 million people.
Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association has over 100 members, including organizational members that represent hundreds more. In the past year, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association has engaged hundreds of citizens, or “stewards,” on the Susquehanna River and its tributaries regarding issues including coal ash contamination, landfills, CAFOs/slaughterhouses, public access, agricultural pollution, stormwater runoff, the requirements of the Chesapeake Total Maximum Daily Load implementation, diseases which effect smallmouth bass, and the relicensing of Conowingo Dam. Our organization is dedicated not only to advocate against pollution but also to educate the public, legislators, and agencies regarding our work to instill greater support of clean water. Without education and promotion of our work, we would lack the backing we need to make a greater impact on water quality and positive policy changes. The Lower Susquehanna River, Juniata River, and Chesapeake Bay are constantly subjected to further pollution. It’s critical that our organization upholds its duty to advocate, educate, and keep polluters accountable in accordance with the law. Our organization does not receive state or federal funding and is sustainable on donations, membership dues, and few grants. Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association is
a small but growing organization and is looking for resources to accommodate initiatives focused on advocacy and education, member support, and organizational capacity. Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? One staff member and more than 50 active volunteers. Did Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? Yes. It was a great experience and we are very fortunate for those who organized the event. What are the organization’s goals for Give Local York 2019? We aim to raise more money than we did last year. Our organization has a need for funding on many different fronts. We plan to purchase a boat this year for pollution patrolling and for educational purposes. We need funding to purchase educational materials and exhibits for the numerous events we attend for educating the public. Many issues we are advocating on require funding for technical expertise, research, and communications. We also are in need of organizational capacity funding to further our mission and gain support by bringing in new members and donors. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Depending on how much we raise, we would dedicate funds toward a specific project and/or operational funding. For example, if we raise $10,000, we can dedicate $5,000 toward our advocacy needs, $3,500 toward a boat purchase, $1,000 for educational materials, and $500 toward operations.

CSA Sponsorship Program Posted The Spoutwood Farm Center CSA program, now in its 25th year, is seeking sponsors to cover the costs of a medium or large traditional CSA share of fresh produce for families in need. The Spoutwood Farm CSA program allows members the chance to purchase freshly harvested, locally grown vegetables directly from its PA Certified Naturally Grown Farm. This not only provides families with the benefits of eating seasonal produce free from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, it also offers them the opportunity to learn how their food is grown and to get to know the people who grow it. Each season Spoutwood Farm
supplies approximately 100 families with local, naturally grown produce though its CSA program for 24 weeks between May and November. A large membership feeds three to four people, and a medium membership feeds one or two people. Interested organizations have the option of choosing a family to sponsor through their own networks or they can opt to allow Spoutwood to choose one from its list. Spoutwood’s farmers choose the contents of the traditional weekly medium or large share based on what is freshly harvested. Members may also choose
weekly, biweekly, or monthly add-on items to accompany their share. A detailed list of the items included in the weekly CSA share along with relevant recipes and cooking suggestions will be emailed to each member as well. Registrations for all CSA memberships are now open, including this year’s brand-new Free Choice Share program. Readers may visit www.spoutwood.org and use code Eatlocal19 at checkout for the early bird discount on traditional medium and large shares through Friday, March 15. For more information, readers may contact Gina Porter at 443-794-4371 or farm.manager@spoutwood.org.

WellSpan Philhaven has received a national grant to expand its mental health and suicide prevention training to groups that include veterans’ advocates, school employees, criminal justice providers, and social service agencies in southcentral Pennsylvania. The $375,000 grant came from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. WellSpan Philhaven was one of just two mental health organizations in the state to receive a
Mental Health Awareness Training grant from SAMHSA in 2018. The other one is NAMI in Erie County. WellSpan Philhaven will use the funds to expand two of its training programs: Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). Both programs teach people how to recognize and respond to someone who is having mental health problems or crises. The training shows people how to respond to someone in a way that may help prevent a tragedy. Eight partner community organizations will initially receive the training, including For the Love of a Veteran in Hanover,
the Lebanon County Correctional Facility, Warwick School District in Lititz, and the We Matter Coalition in Hershey. The grant-funded training will be offered in addition to WellSpan Philhaven’s ongoing Mental Health First Aid and QPR training, which is particularly geared toward suicide prevention. WellSpan Philhaven’s certified trainers have taught more than 2,000 people in the two programs to date. The training is offered at no cost as part of its community benefit programs. Donors also help to fund the training programs. To learn more, readers may visit www.wellspan.org.
