Second Family Travel Fair Planned By Ann Mead Ash

“Annually, the U.S. Travel Association says 705 million vacation days are left unused. That is a lot,” said Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and an organizer of the second PA Family Travel Fair. “For people who live in Pennsylvania, there is so much to do within a short distance. Everyone recognizes Philly and Pittsburgh, but there is so much in the middle people aren’t aware of,” noted Royal. Following the success of the first fair in spring 2018, Royal has lined up exhibitors, along with amusements for children, food for purchase, and opportunities to win prizes, for the second free event, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In 2018, Royal noted that much of the state would be represented in some way at the fair, but this year, she promises even more. “We will have a lot of new exhibitors,” said Royal, noting that most of last year’s exhibitors will be returning. New this year, will be Sesame

Place, Elk Country Visitors Center, and the Little League Museum. McKean County, location of the Allegheny National Forest and the famous Kinzua Bridge, a former railroad bridge that is now a tourist attraction, will be represented, along with the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Area, which covers five counties in the northern region. Also represented will be the area of the Eagles Mere, which will include the Eagles Mere Air Museum, Eagles Mere Auto Museum, and the Eagles Mere Inn. Elk Mountain Ski Resort will be represented. Railroad enthusiasts will find the Colebrookdale Railroad, and for those interested in Pennsylvania’s rich mine history, there will be information about the Pioneer Tunnel Historic Coal Mine in Schuylkill County. Returning this year will be DelGrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash and representatives of Indiana County, home of the Jimmy Stewart Museum. KPETS (Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services) team members will bring their friendly service dogs again, as well. Prizes will include a weekend package for two at the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle. The excursion will include two nights at the inn, meals, and a kayak tour guided by a park naturalist. A visit

to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon for four will also be given away. The prize will include two nights in an extended stay suite at the Canyon Motel; a family pack of tickets from Ole Covered Wagon Tours, which includes horse-drawn tours of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon; and a gift basket of Potter-Tioga County products. The fair puts emphasis on family fun, so children will find plenty to do, including a scavenger hunt with a grand prize of tickets to DelGrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash. Entertainment will be provided by WJTL’s Kids Cookie Break. In addition, magic shows with balloon artist Randy Ward will be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Children will also have a chance to meet a number of mascots, including Chipper, the Herr’s mascot; Yummie from Kitchen Kettle Village; and Yogi Bear from Yogi’s Jellystone Camp Resort in Quarryville. Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will be onsite to perform a show about creatures that live in the rain forest at noon. In addition, Tiny Town will bring a castle to the venue. According to Royal, guests at the fair will have the opportunity to gain a wealth of information from the visitors

bureaus that will have booths at the event. “We will have 15 visitors bureaus. I love what the bureaus will be presenting,” said Royal. “They will talk about all the special things in their areas, and nobody knows their particular destination better than they do.” Hungry attendees will find at least seven food trucks selling a variety of items, including Auntie Anne’s, Au-Sam’s Trolley Stop, Kunzler Rolling Grill, K’s Kitchen, Mad Dash Artisan Grilled Cheese, Smoothie King, and Waffle Mamas. Plenty of free parking will be available at the fair. Readers who would like more information are welcome to visit www.pafamilytravel.com.

OUR 50TH YEAR!

United Way of York County

What is the mission of United Way of York County? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? The mission of United Way of York County is to build a stronger, caring community by cultivating financial generosity, volunteerism, and advocacy. United Way collaborates with other public and private organizations to engage the community in addressing the complex issues facing York County. By developing initiatives that get at the root causes of these issues, United Way and its partners find solutions and

Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? United Way of York County employs approximately 23 people and engages more than 1,000 volunteers annually through its board of directors, committees, and volunteer projects such as Day of Action. Did United Way of York County participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? This is United Way of York County’s first year participating in Give Local York, although the organization provided a match

Reading Challenge Program Launched As part of its focus on literacy, United Way of York County launched a new program in February called the Early Literacy Read to Me Challenge, a pre-literacy program designed to encourage York County families to read to their 1- and 2-year-old children. This project was funded by a grant from the Women’s Giving Circle of York County Community Foundation. United Way delivered its first crates of age-appropriate books to participating early learning center classrooms at Crispus Attucks, YMCA Hanover, YWCA Hanover, and YWCA York. Children will take home a new book each night, and parents will track the number of books read, with the goal of reading 100 books during the school year. The piloted group at these four early learning centers is expected to serve 100 children across 12 classrooms. By focusing specifically on 1and 2-year-old children, the Early Literacy Read to Me Challenge will complement the Early Literacy 100 Book Challenge, which serves children ages 3 to 5 in participating classrooms. The program also joins United Way’s other current #yorkreads

initiatives, including Reach Out and Read, targeted to children ages 6 months to 5 years at pediatrician appointments, and public-facing Reading Ready Corners and Little Free Libraries. Families in participating classrooms will also receive information about York County Libraries’ new initiative, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, which offers library cards and provides community members information on their closest library and incentives for reaching goals along the way. Families will also receive information on the libraries’ Summer Reading Program, which operates during the timeframe that the Early Literacy Read to Me Challenge is not active. Individuals interested in supporting the #yorkreads programs through book donations can drop off new or used children’s books at the United Way of York County, 800 E. King St., York, on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Readers may also browse the United Way wish list on Amazon at http://bit.ly/yorkreads_Wish List, where books can be purchased and sent directly to the United Way.

717-244-7867

What are the organization’s goals for Give Local York 2019? A child’s access to age-appropriate books is key to reading proficiency and long-term school success. Our promise at United Way of York County is to place books into the hands of children in York County who need them, to improve reading success. Last year, more than 67,000 books were read through #yorkreads initiatives! We want to do more, but United Way of York County currently has limited capacity to pick up and distribute large-volume donations of books. We need a better process to match the generous donations from our community! Our goal through Give Local York is to raise $30,000 for a dedicated #yorkreads van with a larger loading size, to increase our ability to reach more children.

What are the organization’s goals for Give Local York 2019? Our goal this year is to raise public awareness of what we do and to raise funds for the team. All funds are put back into the team for operations. We use funds raised to purchase muchneeded equipment for our team. Our team performs multiple operations, from search and rescue to assisting with water rescue and CERT operations. Each operation requires various types of equipment, ranging from rope rescue gear to boat equipment, water rescue gear, K-9 equipment, communications gear, and much more. The only funding we receive is from fundraising events such as this or via grants and donations. Aside from performing search and rescue operations, our team conducts several public relations events each year. We provide educational and training events for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other community organizations.

Church Easter Services Posted

Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Funds raised through Give Local York will greatly assist the team in purchasing much-needed equipment. For example, if we raise $10,000, we can dedicate $1,300 toward the purchase of an AED; $4,000 toward additional water rescue gear for both our water rescue personnel and K-9; $2,000 for additional communication gear used during search operations; and $2,700 for rope rescue gear used during rescue operations. All of this equipment is needed for both the search and rescue operations the team provides and the CERT operations we provide to the community as well.

Grant Helps Fund EMS Provider Merger In an ongoing effort to create a uniform EMS system that provides high-quality service to all areas of York County, the York County Community Foundation’s (YCCF) WellSpan EMS Fund has awarded a grant of $33,000 to three local nonprofit EMS providers to create efficiencies and optimize service delivery. The three organizations in the project are York Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Inc., Grantley Fire Company, and West York Ambulance. The grant supported the hiring of a legal consultant to perform an analysis of the organizations, the market, infrastructure, and more, resulting in a recommendation for merging that was then taken to each

organization’s managing board for review and a vote. The grant also supports the execution of the recommendations, resulting in the creation of First Capital Community Transport Partners as the first step toward regionalizing and coordinating the provision of emergency and medical transportation services. For the past five years, York Regional EMS, Grantley Fire Company, and West York Ambulance have been in discussions about coordination and consolidation to create the foundation on which a sustainable, broad-based, uniform EMS system could be established. With the grant from YCCF’s WellSpan EMS Fund, the three nonprofit organizations aimed to create one that is viable,

Did South Central PA Search and Rescue participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? Yes, we did, and it was a learning experience for our team as we worked with those that organized the event. This was a first-of-akind of experience for us in our fundraising endeavors. We learned that this is a great way to help tell our story of who we are and what we do for the community.

What is the mission of the South Central PA Search and Rescue? How does the organization work to achieve its goal? The South Central PA Search and Rescue Team is a search and rescue team based in York County. The team was developed to help local emergency services and communities deal with lost and or missing persons, no matter what the situation entails. The team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We are a “support” team that local fire, rescue, EMS, police water rescue, emergency managers, and other emergency agencies can call upon to assist in mitigating any incident involving a lost or missing person. The team operates with ground search crews, K-9 search teams, mountain bike search teams, water rescue teams, and community emergency response teams (CERT). Once requested, the team will respond and operate as a support team under the incident commander for the incident at hand. We will assist in the overall event as a mutual aid agency. Our team typically responds to approximately 25 calls a year. Our team members are very professional and certified in various aspects of search and rescue as well as EMS, fire police, firefighting, water rescue, hazardous materials, the National Incident Management System (NIMS), and several other certifications that support the overall team operations. The team responds to seven different counties surrounding York County. We conduct training at least once a month, with team members attending various certification classes throughout the year, aside from the team training. We provide educational classes to the public as requested and attend several public events to assist in public awareness of search and rescue. Our team is dedicated to assisting those in their time of need “So Others May Live.”

Voices For Hope Event Camp Invention To Offer Local Events Announced The 2019 Voices for Hope event, which will commemorate the 25th anniversary of Help for Oncology Problems and Emotional Support (H.O.P.E.), will be held at the Out Door Country Club, 1157 Detwiler Drive, York, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 2. A message will be delivered by brain cancer survivor Zachary William Zortman, a local musician who penned the song “Meant to Live” in honor of his aunt, Kathy Brown, who passed away from colon cancer in 2007. Nine years later, Zortman was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The artist, now 31, has been cancer-free for two years and credits his wife, Annie, for her unwavering support. The couple will welcome a son in May. A portion of the proceeds from purchases of “Meant to Live” benefit Keep Punching, a Baltimore-based foundation that supports brain cancer awareness and research. Sponsored by H.O.P.E., the Voices for Hope event will also honor three individuals who

- through their volunteerism - have helped the local cancer community. Recipients of this year’s special Heart of Hope Award will be Father Capitani, Ed Titanish, and Thomas Note, three avid H.O.P.E. cheerleaders who have been staunch supporters since the founding of H.O.P.E. in 1994. The cost of a ticket will include a sit-down dinner, access to a silent auction, the presentation of the Heart of Hope award, and a keynote speech by Zortman, as well as a performance of his song “Meant to Live.” Tickets will be available through Friday, April 19. H.O.P.E. is a nonprofit organization that provides meals, transportation to and from medical appointments, resource materials, wigs and hats, support groups, and other services at no charge to those affected by cancer. For more information or tickets, readers may contact 717-993-3778 or mcauliffeh@comcast .net. To learn more about H.O.P.E., readers may visit www.hopeforcancerfamilies.org.
