Address: 3908 Corey Road, Harrisburg, PA 17109 Phone: 717-564-1700 Email: jsands@centralpafoodbank.org Website: www.centralpafoodbank.org S o c i a l M e d i a : www.facebook.com/ CentralPAFoodBank and @centralpafb on Twitter and Instagram Jennifer Sands, communications manager, who has been with the organization for a year and a half, answered the following questions: What is the mission of Central Pennsylvania Food Bank? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? The mission of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is fighting hunger, improving lives, and strengthening communities. The food bank works with more than 1,000 partner agencies and programs across central Pennsylvania, including more than 120 in York County, to provide nutritious food to more than 140,000 individuals struggling with hunger in our communities. These partners include local food pantries, emergency shelters, soup kitchens, and more. Programs of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank include MilitaryShare, which focuses on providing food to veterans and active-duty military personnel through mobile distributions at VFWs, AMVETS,

and other military organizations. Youth programs include BackPack and Summer Feeding for children in our communities. ElderShare aims to bring nutritious boxes of food to seniors struggling with hunger every month. The food bank also does outreach for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), assisting families and individuals in applying for this federal program. Approximately how many staff mem bers and volunteers are involved? The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank employs more than 100 full- and parttime individuals. Last year, the food bank offered more than 32,000 hours of volunteer time to more than 3,000 volunteers. Did Central Pennsylvania Food Bank participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? This is our first year participating in the event. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the main provider of charitable food in York County. Partnerships with more than 120 agencies like food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, and more throughout the county have enabled millions of pounds of food to be distributed to York Countians struggling with hunger. In many cases, we provide these partners with more than 80 percent of the food they distribute to those in need in the area.

Donations through Give Local York can help us provide even more nutritious foods to our neighbors in need in York County. We are committed to providing healthy fruits and vegetables, dairy, and center-of-the-plate protein. A donation of $25 can help us provide up to 300 meals for those struggling with hunger. What are the organization’s goals for 2019? The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank continues to work toward our Bold Goal, which states, “By 2025, our collaborative network will provide access to enough nutritious food for everyone struggling with hunger in each of the 27 counties we serve, and we will convene and nurture partnerships to make progress toward ending hunger.” One of the ways we are working toward that goal in 2019 is with our “A Seat at the Table” initiative in York County. Since York is one of the counties in the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s service area with a large meal gap, the food bank formed a collaborative with Catholic Harvest Food Pantry, New Hope Ministries, The Food Alliance, and the York Memorial Health Fund to gather data and informa-

tion on the charitable food assistance programs throughout the county with a goal to begin implementing strategies outlined in Gov. Tom Wolf’s “A Seat at the Table, A Blueprint for a Hunger Free PA.” The governor’s blueprint outlines strategies to solve hunger in the commonwealth. The results of the food bank’s work will transform hunger programs in York County and bring the food bank one step closer to its Bold Goal. The food bank expects to release its report and implement its strategies in 2019. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Funds raised through Give Local York will be earmarked for projects in York County that are identified as priority through “A Seat at the Table” implementation. These funds will help us continue to close the meal gap in York County, aligning with Gov. Wolf’s blueprint, and allow us to provide more fresh, nutritious food to our neighbors in need through a variety of programs and services for individuals, families, children and youths, seniors, and veterans and active-duty military personnel.

al in a timely manner. Another tip helped law enforcement in a drug seizure with a street value of over $100,000. Approximately how many staff mem bers and volunteers are involved? Crime Stoppers is a strictly volunteer organization. We currently have 11 board members who live in York County along with two police officers. The police officers are liaisons to our board and disseminate tips to York County police agencies. We have an attorney who volunteers her time as our solicitor. Did York County Crime Stoppers par ticipate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? We did participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year. We did experience an increase in donations to our organization as a result. We recognized that we could have done more to promote our mission and are working harder for this year’s event.

What are the organization’s goals for 2019? Fundraising is always a goal for an organization that currently operates on donations. We do not have any standing funding sources from which we can obtain funds. While the operation of the organization is done strictly by volunteers, we do have some expenses that must be covered. It would be great if we could receive enough funds to cover the cost of the software to maintain tips and the answering service that disseminates that information to our law enforcement liaisons. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Funds received from the Give Local York will help to fund the operations of Crime Stoppers. As we do not run specific programs, all funds help to cover our operating costs. No one receives a salary.

Additionally, organizations have the opportunity to win

more than $22,000 in prizes on Give Day. On May 3, York County will be transformed into a community-wide celebration of generosity. Give Local York activities will take place all over York County, with nonprofits working together to host events from Dillsburg to Delta and Hanover to Hellam and everywhere in between. Sparrow Place Schedules Event

We have no paid employees and approximately 130 volunteers. Did Pitties.Love.Peace participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year? No, we did not participate last year, but are excited to do so this year! We have participated in the Lancaster Extraordinary Give for a couple years and were very happy to learn York now has the Give Local York event. We love participating in these events because it creates a sense of community, brings awareness to so many amazing organizations, and celebrates both the work these groups do and the incredible generosity of people locally and from around the world. What are the organization’s goals for 2019? Our goal remains the same each year: to save as many animals as possible, provide them the best care, and help them move on to finding happily ever after with a family of their own. This includes continuing to recruit new foster families who are willing to open their hearts and homes to dogs in need. The more fosters we have, the more dogs we can save! Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? The funds raised through Give Local York will go directly toward the veterinary expenses we incur. Our veterinary costs in our highest year (2017) were over $127,000. This is always our largest expense.

How does the organi zation work to achieve its goals? Pitties.Love.Peace is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3), foster-based organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of pit bull and bully breed mix dogs and puppies. It is our mission to save those neglected, suffering, or simply unwanted and place them into loving, forever homes. Many dogs come to us with serious medical needs; others simply need love for the first time in their lives. Whatever is needed, we provide. We take dogs from many different situations, but primarily from shelters we partner with and from owners who surrender dogs. As a foster-based rescue, we work to place dogs in approved foster homes that are a good fit for each family. These families provide a temporary safe haven for our dogs and handle their daily care. The rescue provides the dogs/foster families with everything they need, including crates, leashes/collars, highquality food, toys, treats, and training support when necessary. Of course, we also handle and cover all veterinary care, which ranges from routine care (spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchip) to complex procedures and heart surgeries. We rely solely on donations and ongoing fundraisers to provide this care to our dogs. Approximately how many volunteers are involved?

YORK COUNTY SENIOR GAMES MON., JUNE 17 - FRI., JUNE 21, 2019

The Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society has announced that the entire Ma & Pa Railroad through the Muddy Creek Valley is now passable. After a flood in August 2018, the rail line was closed for repairs over the winter. new volunteers will receive training to staff the museum at Muddy Creek Forks and operate the railroad. The volunteer day will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the A.M. Grove General Store at Muddy Creek Forks, 1258 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Airville. The society’s corps of volunteers welcomes museum visitors with educational historic interpretation, hosts tours and special events, and operates the trains at the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village. Train operators, store clerks, millers, station agents, and other period-specific positions are among the volunteer opportunities. New volunteers are always welcome to participate and become a part of the museum that is open regularly from early June through mid-December. Historic interpreters provide a glimpse of what life was like during the early 20th century, when Muddy Creek Forks was a busy commercial village centered on the railroad. Signs are purposely minimized in the Heritage V i l lage to encourage personal interaction with the docents. The annual train operator session, also held on volunteer day, is open to anyone age 18 and older. It provides

refresher training for current operators and an introduction to the rules and practical training required for new operators to be certified. Volunteer day is also a good time to explore behind-the-scenes opportunities, including track work, right-of-way maintenance, mechanical work, carpentry, welding, painting, masonry, and lawn and garden care. People with all kinds of interests and skill are needed. Coffee and doughnuts and lunch will be provided as well as the resource and educational materials volunteers will need for their roles as docents or train operators. Following the required training, volunteers have the opportunity to work in various roles according to their specific interests and availability. Individuals interested in volunteering or wanting additional information are asked to contact the Ma & Pa Railroad Preservation Society at volunteer@ MaAndPaRailroad.com or call Bob Wieners at 443-922-9216. Advance registration for the volunteer day/operator training is required to provide an accurate attendee count for lunch and for preparation of docent manuals and other materials. The 2019 season of the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village will open on

The Ma & Pa Railroad through the Muddy Creek Valley is again open for rail traffic after parts of the track were closed due to severe damage sustained in the flash flood of Aug. 31, 2018. The scenic rail line is operated by the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society as part of the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village. In the flood, a 30-foot steel bridge was washed away, two other bridges were damaged, and about 900 feet of track was destroyed. A contractor hired by the preservation society worked through the winter to restore the railroad. Most of the line was open in time for the society to support the regular trout stocking of Muddy Creek by Trout Unlimited. In fact, the first train to run on the north end of the line since the flood was a fish train. On April 17, the final rails were bolted in place at the foot of Guinston Forge Road just south of Laurel. Some ballasting and final adjustment of the track alignment remains to be done, but the entire railroad is now passable. Track repairs are expected to be finished for the season opening of the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village. The Society has scheduled its annual volunteer day, at which current and

Regardless of their specialty, everyone aboard the submarine must learn how everything on the ship works and how to respond in emergencies. Only those who pass rigorous testing become “qualified in submarines” and earn the right to wear the coveted gold or silver dolphins on their uniform. Dolphins on the insignia are fish (also known as dorado or mahi-mahi). Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community, and career, Stiffler says in addition to earning his dolphins, he is most proud of earning his surface warfare pin in February 2017 and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals in 2018 and 2019.
