York County Libraries officials have announced renovation and expansion plans for three library locations. According to York County Libraries president Robert F. Lambert, the project will transform Martin Library, Kreutz Creek Library, and Kaltreider-Benfer Library into state-of-the-art library facilities. The endeavor marks the first simultaneous, multi-location expansion project in the organization’s 45-year history. Martin Library, located on the corner of Queen and Market streets in York city, will renovate and repurpose 18,000 square feet of its 68,000-square-foot building. Key changes will include improved community space and customer services areas, expanded teen space with digital media labs, and areas for STEM and robotics exploration for children. Energy efficiencies and historic preservation of the building will also be part of the project. This year, Kreutz Creek Library in Hellam is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Established in 1979 in a 1,200-squarefoot FEMA trailer, the library will grow more than seven times in size when it moves to the adjacent 8,800-square-foot Hellam Township building. Township supervisors voted in March to construct a new facility on their Walnut Street campus and to allow the library to use their current municipal building. The future site for Kreutz Creek Library will feature dedicated children and teen program spaces, an open service area, additional computers, seating, and meeting spaces. Kaltreider-Benfer Library in Red Lion will expand on the Charles Street side of its building and to the rear. Glass and windows will line the two new sides of the building, resulting in more natural lighting and improved lighting efficiencies. The 19-year-old structure will expand to 14,000 square feet and will be renovated and repurposed during the construction phase. It will feature dedicated children and teen program spaces and an expanded open service area. See Library Renovations pg 4

Don Dellinger III, library director for Kaltreider-Benfer Library in Red Lion, shared about the library’s future renovation and expansion during a recent press conference. The library will feature open service space and dedicated areas for children and teenagers.

Project Linus of York will meet on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fourth United Methodist Church, 20 N. Lehman St., York. Project Linus is a volunteer nonprofit organization that creates new, handmade blankets and afghans for children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. Volunteers do not need to know how to sew, as long as they can cut or tie a knot. Those who knit or crochet should bring yarn, needles, and patterns. Community members may also help by donating items, including yarn that is not wool, child-friendly fabric, fleece fabric, flannel, or white or cream thread. All are welcome to attend. Attendees should bring their own lunch, and beverages and dessert will be provided. For more information,

readers may contact 717-887-5448 or projectblankets@hotmail.com, visit www.facebook.com/Project LinusYork, or search for “Project Linus Movie” at www.youtube.com. Donations included $750 from the Wrightsville Social Club, $500 from the Columbia Fraternal Association, $500 from Walmart on East Market Street in York, $250 from Walmart in Shrewsbury, and $500 from the Harrisburg Kiwanis Youth Foundation. McKendree Will Offer Program On Addiction “Families Helping Families Navigate Resources for Addiction Issues” will be a program offered by McKendree United Methodist Church, Route 74, Airville, on Wednesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. in the Community Center. Those with someone in their family who has a drug or alcohol addiction will have an opportunity to listen and learn from others who have gone through the same situation. Leading the discussion will be Alyssa Rohrbaugh, a co-founder of the Not One More - York (NOM), and Jennifer Way, a school counselor at Red Lion Area Junior High School. They will focus on the signs of addiction, as well as who to talk to first, how to approach the subject with the addict, where to go

Say the word “gala” and visions of triple-digit ticket prices might come to mind. Tickets for the Grand Purple Gala set for Saturday, May 18, however, are priced in the mid-double-digits, thanks to corporate and individual sponsors. “We want it to be affordable,” said gala president Coleen Frazier. “We want caregivers to be there too.” Folks who buy tickets will be admitted to the gala, which has the theme “Spring Into the Light” this year. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Cultural Center at Willow Valley Communities, 900 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street. The dress code is spring semiformal, and only folks age 21 or older will be admitted.

Guests may visit food stations, where they may partake of wings, empanadas, meatballs, charcuterie, a version of cheesesteaks, scones, cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, and more. Some beverages will be included, and others may be purchased separately. Two Pints Shy, a power folk band that strives to be fun and energetic, will perform music for dancing. The group plays covers from six decades as well as some originals. A silent auction will run during the event. Trips to a themed amusement park in Florida, Las Vegas, and New York will be up for bids. Other items in the auction will include a firepit filled with goodies, themed baskets, certificates for lunches with government officials, golf and spa

from her grandfather and her work as a nurse in memory care facilities. “I wanted to do something that had an impact,” Frazier said. “I did a lot of education with families. It’s an exhausting disease.” Relating an incident during which her grandfather slipped out of the house tremendously underdressed for the cold weather, she added, “It’s scary.” According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as folks age, some forgetfulness is normal. When memory loss disrupts everyday life, however, that is indicative that Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may be developing. A decline in thinking and reasoning skills is also a red flag, and folks should see their doctor. Group member Mary Read has dubbed herself an Alzheimer’s ambassador, as she has been dealing with the early onset of these symptoms. Frazier noted that the disease is such that the diagnosis cannot be confirmed until after death. In living people, diagnosis is made based on cognitive testing. “It’s a very grueling process,” Frazier said. Information about Alzheimer’s disease will be available at the Grand Purple Gala. Folks may buy tickets in advance for a discount by visiting https://717 events.ticketspice.com/the -grand-purple-gala, or they may pay full price at the door. For more information, readers may contact Frazier at 717-5872209 or leeny626@aol.com or find “The Grand Purple Gala” on Facebook.

Inviting folks to attend the spring-themed Grand Purple Gala in Willow Street on May 18 are (from left) Coleen Frazier, Nancy Lawrence, Julie Ehrgood, and Megan Varano. The proceeds from the event will support the Alzheimer’s Association.

Kutztown University (KU) presented the Chambliss Student Academic Achievement Awards on April 5. The students who received awards were nominated by staff and faculty members for meeting one or more of the six areas of achievement, which include successfully completed research projects; high-quality original artwork; high-quality artistic performances in music, chorus, drama, and more; original writing in literature or meritorious writing in other fields; noteworthy achievements in athletics; and outstanding service to the KU community. The Academic Achievement Awards were established in 2004

through a donation provided by Dr. Carlson Chambliss, KU professor of astronomy from 1970 to 2003. The purpose of the awards is to recognize the exceptional individual achievements of a select group of KU graduating seniors. Specially designed coin medallions of gold, silver, and copper were presented to the students. Grant Fickes, from Red Lion, is a mathematics major slated to graduate in May. He is awarded the Chambliss Academic Achievement Award Gold Medal in the category of successfully completed research projects. Fickes has co-authored three papers for publication during his time at KU, one of which was already

accepted by the Journal of Combinatorial Mathematics and Combinatorial Computing. He is currently working on a fourth paper with mathematics professor Dr. Tony Wong concerning edge-distinguishing chromatic numbers. Fickes has presented on both the local and national levels, including the National Joint Mathematics Meeting. He has

won three mathematics awards at KU, is a dean’s list student and a member of the Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society, and is the recipient of the Sesquicentennial Scholarship and the STEM Scholarship. Fickes is also an elite-level alto saxophone player in KU’s award-winning jazz ensemble. He aspires to be a professor and researcher in mathematics.

The 44th annual Olde York Street Fair will be held in and around Continental Square in downtown York on Sunday, May 12, from 12:30 to 6 p.m. All are invited to attend this free event. Approximately 100 craft vendors will feature handmade gift items for sale, and several crafters will be customizing items. Food vendors will sell traditional American festival food as well as original creations. All food vendors are partnered with a nonprofit organization and have agreed to donate a portion of their sales to that partner. Farm Show milkshakes will be back. New this year will be a snow cone vendor with a humanpowered frozen beverage machine. A Kids Fun Block will feature a variety of inflatables, a petting zoo, games, face painting, spin art, sand art, and more. Entomologist Ryan Bridge (“The Bug Man”) will again have his collection on display for everyone to see and touch. Live entertainment in a variety of genres and strolling performers will be featured, and several “rest stop seating” areas will be located throughout the fair. HACC York Campus will again provide free secure parking, and three shuttle buses will transport attendees to and from the fair. The first bus will leave the campus at noon, and buses will travel back and forth continuously all day; the last bus will leave the fair at 6 p.m. The York County Heritage Trust’s Colonial Complex will also be open during the fair. Inside the Historical Society Museum, the auxiliary’s ice cream parlor will be open.
