STEAM Academy live in urban settings with limited access to hands-on gardening and sustainable living opportunities. Through participation in this project, students will be educated on creating and maintaining a healthy community for both the native wildlife and residents of the city of York. York County Literacy Council (YCLC) was awarded a $1,000 grant for materials and supplies for its Partners in Conversation class. The class provides an opportunity for individuals to improve their English-speaking skills and build their confidence in daily interactions. The materials include an English Ready newspaper and app for tablets that YCLC uses in the class. With significant changes in the demographics of York County, more individuals have been seeking YCLC’s services. All grants approved by the UYRC support programs that service York and the York County community. Many of the funded initiatives support Rotary’s six areas of focus: maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, and water and sanitation. Uptown York Rotary Club consists of a diverse group of professionals who share a passion for giving back to the community and making a difference in the world. The club’s service focus areas are downtown revitalization, environmental sustainability, and community and youth development. Club members gather weekly to celebrate the club’s service, share professional and personal successes, and learn about businesses, organizations, and programs that impact the quality of life in York city, York County, and the global community. Uptown York Rotary Club meets at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays on the second floor of Rockfish Public House, 110 N. George St., York.

Due to the new location of the event, the Wrightsville Historical Museum on Locust Street will not be open during Heritage Day. However, since one of the original goals of Heritage Day was to promote the rich history of the town, HWI will offer three tours of the Union Cemetery, located across the parking lot from Wrightsville Elementary, on the site of the first church in Wrightsville. Tours will be held at 11 a.m., noon, and 1 p.m. According to Young, the ground was donated to the town by Susanna Wright Houston, a descendent of the town’s founder, John Wright. Lisa Burk, co-historian of HWI, who directed the cemetery restoration project in 2017, will conduct tours and provide fascinating historic anecdotes. The Emigsville Band will provide pops music throughout the day, and Mike Thomas will amaze the crowd with magic tricks. Other entertainment highlights will include Cylo, the Barnstormers’ mascot, as well as Ryan “The Bug Man” Bridge, a petting zoo, a bounce house, fire trucks, face painting, a bicycle obstacle course, and an oldfashioned peanut scramble. Plus, HWI will offer a Heritage Day Scavenger Hunt for those with a competitive spirit. Participants may pick up a form at the HWI booth upon arriving and carry it with them to complete as they wander through the festivities. All participants who complete the form will be entered into a drawing to win two free tickets to HWI’s new Stories by Lantern Light Ghost Tour this fall. In addition, HWI will have information available about a new summer camp for children that will combine history with the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) process. Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
