Academy Holds Special Events Students Win Scholarships

Shrewsbury Christian Academy students participated in an all-school service project at First Fruits Farm on Oct. 4. Students helped pick more than 20,000 pounds of potatoes for those in need.

This past May, the Christopher Columbus Scholarship committee awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarship monies to five students from across the York County area at its annual fundraising dinner. The scholarship recipients were Riyana Owens from Dallastown Area High School, Rachel Lyter from York Catholic High School, Maddy Miller from KennardDale High School, Catalina Feistritzer from Central York High School, and Jacob Taylor from York Suburban High School. All students intend to pursue four-year degrees at areas colleges or universities. The fundraising dinner, in its 30th year, drew a capacity crowd of nearly 200 attendees and was held at the Country Club of York. The

awards ceremony was followed by a draw-down dinner complete with radio personality Bill O’Brien as master of ceremonies. Since 1988, the scholarship fund has awarded a total of more than $200,000 in scholarships to more than 100 young men and women attending York County high schools. Similar to the stories of Christopher Columbus traveling abroad to discover a new world, the fund was established to benefit students who might go on to new discoveries themselves, thus benefiting society. For more information on the Christopher Columbus Scholarship Fund, readers may visit www.ccsfyorkpa.org. Applications for the 2019 year will be available in December 2018.

Thanksgiving Eve Service Set A Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. at Water’s Edge, 471 Abels Road, Craley. The message will be “Bless the Lord, O My Soul,” based on Psalm 103. For more information, readers may call the church office at 717-246-2428.

Shrewsbury Christian Academy hosted its annual Grandparents’ Day on Oct. 5.

NOW UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR

More than 400 walkers helped raise more than $92,000 at this year’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes in York city to provide services to victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking at YWCA York’s ACCESS York, Still Waters (Hanover) and Victim Assistance Center. Participants donned women’s shoes to walk approximately 1 mile in an effort to raise awareness and funds for YWCA York’s victim services. The money raised will help the organization provide a 24-hour hotline, counseling, legal services, emergency shelter, housing and community education in York County. Awards were given to the top fundraising team, individual and sponsor. This year’s top team is Purple Pumps, top individual is Keith Noll, and top sponsor team is WellSpan Health. This year’s event included a Kick Up Your Heels pre-party, a proclamation by the York County Board of Commissioners for October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, YWCA York’s Temple Guard performance, and an after party including food trucks and music. For more information, readers may call YWCA York at 717-8452631 or visit www.ywcayork.org.
