Partnership will provide LMS students education options
BY JEFF FALK
While we want the best for them, sometimes all we can do for our children is give them opportunities. What they do with those opportunities and how they take advantage of them is really up to them.
Providing kids with opportunities is a key element of the educational process. It’s also what the new partnership
“We’re glad to offer opportunities for our students that benefit them and reinforce our student-centered approach to learning.”
between Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) and Millersville University is all about.
“The purpose is to provide opportunities for kids,” said Kirk Benner, who’s been LMS’ high school principal for three years. “When a student comes to Lancaster Mennonite, no matter where their future is going to lead them, there are multiple opportunities here. It comes down to opportunities, and kids knowing we’re here for them and what makes sense for them.”
LMS and Millersville University recently entered into a partnership that will allow LMS juniors and seniors to take MU classes, either in person or online, and earn college credits. As part of the agreement, the LMS students will receive a significant reduction in their tuition fees for those courses.
“We are very pleased that Lancaster Mennonite High School students will now have a low-cost opportunity to earn high school and college credits
simultaneously through our dual enrollment program,” said Douglas Zander, Millersville University’s associate vice president of enrollment management and dean of admissions. “We appreciate the strong preparation already offered by the high school, and this helps provide their students a seamless transition to higher education.”
“The more we can offer kids and families, the better,” said Benner. “One of our more recent
goals is to become involved with community-based institutions like Millersville. We’re looking to be engaged in the community. Millersville is right in our own backyard, and a lot of our teachers went to Millersville. This allows students to start their college careers in high school.”
There are currently 534 students in prekindergarten through grade 12 enrolled at LMS, including 60 juniors and 55 seniors. Many of those upperclassmen will likely
Pastor Tully leaves behind legacy of unwavering faithfulness
BY JEFF FALK
Over the last three centuries, Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers has seen members come and go, has experienced change and has witnessed a lot of water pass under its spiritual bridge. But the two constants that have remained are God’s presence and the congregation’s commitment to following His wishes.
During his 17-year tenure as Salem Hellers’ pastor, Bruce Tully has mirrored, maintained and fostered that commitment. In many ways, that is the legacy that he is leaving behind.
“I think I’ve done what I can,” said Tully. “My key term for myself is faithfulness. God has been leading, guiding, directing this church for 300 years. I wanted to remain faithful to the calling I was given. Hopefully, people will look back on my ministry and say, ‘That guy was faithful and propagated the faith of the church.’”
Tully retired as Salem Hellers’ pastor effective Dec. 31. A 67-year-old native of Ohio, Tully always has seen himself as more of a “lead elder,” a

Organized by PCA&D’s American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Student Chapter, Designathon gives students real-world experience in creating projects for clients under a tight one-day deadline. It is also intended to help students learn that nonprofits have marketing needs in order to be successful and that strong graphic design on well-organized collateral pieces is an important component
During its history at PCA&D, Designathon has helped more than 120 nonprofit organizations and institutions revitalize their branding and community outreach. Each year, the event’s participation attracts dozens of students, alumni, faculty members, and staff members, many of whom return year after year to participate in the community-centered project.
For more information and to apply by Sunday, Jan. 12, visit https://pcad .edu/designathon-2025/. Questions about applications and process may be directed to Maria Hostetter at mhostetter@pcad.edu.
“I’d say there are a handful of students who will take advantage of this opportunity,” said Benner. “Most of our students who are planning to go on to college take Advanced Placement classes. Most kids are walking out of here with some sort of college credit.”
Last year, LMS entered into a dual enrollment partnership with Messiah University. The school has also enjoyed a similar agreement with Eastern Mennonite University for about eight years now.
“There is a reasonable limit,” said Benner. “(The kids) are still full-time high school students. They still have full-time high school workloads, and we still want them to engage in extracurricular activities. We don’t want to overburden them.
In two years, they could earn a semester’s worth of college credits.”
“When we make these
decisions, we really take into account what’s in the best interest of the students,” said Benner. “One of the beautiful things is that our counselors know the kids, know them well, and they can put together these options and individualize plans for them.”
Most of the college credits earned by LMS juniors and seniors at Millersville University are transferrable to other colleges and institutions.
“We are excited for this partnership with Millersville Univerisity, a local university,” said Benner. “We’re glad to offer opportunities for our students that benefit them and reinforce our student-centered approach to learning. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Millersville University and other local partners.”

Winey named Coach of the Year
The Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association (PSCA) recently presented the 2024 W. Gene Davis Memorial Award for the Coach of the Year in the A Male classification to Fred Winey, head coach of the Lancaster Mennonite High School varsity boys’ soccer team.
Each year, the PSAC honors one of its members as Coach of the Year in each high school classification.
To win this accolade, a coach must demonstrate knowledge of the game through the understanding of the rules and have developed a sound coaching philosophy. He or she must have established a good rapport with the team, officials, and other coaches, and his or her conduct, as well as the conduct of the team, must represent the highest ideals of the game. Mennonite Life invites the public to discover the untold stories of Lancaster
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Whether you are a lifelong resident of Lancaster County or a tourist who has spent a day visiting local attractions, you have likely crossed paths with members of the Plain community. Amish and Mennonite groups make up a significant portion of the county’s population, and various unique customs distinguish Plain community members from other locals. Although most people have seen a horse and buggy or passed a homestead operated by farmers who wear distinct wide-brim hats and suspenders, many aspects of the Plain community’s
culture are unknown to the greater community.
In most Amish and Mennonite dwellings, two books can be found prominently displayed on the mantle: the Bible and “Martyrs Mirror.” “Martyrs Mirror” may not be as famous - or as old - as its bookshelf neighbor, but the book has remained a significant piece of the Anabaptist faith for centuries.
“Martyrs Mirror” was first published in 1660 by Dutch author Thieleman J. van Braght, and the book comprises historical accounts and testimonies of Christian martyrs. Although many highlighted martyrs were Anabaptists, “Martyrs
Mirror” also features the stories of other Christians who were persecuted for their faith.
Mennonite Life will highlight “Martyrs Mirror”

“spiritual guide,” than the leader of the church, which is situated at 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.
“It was absolutely a difficult decision to retire, but no more difficult than the one to follow the calling,” said Tully. “I was 40 years old before I went into seminary. I was called into the ministry kicking and screaming. I left behind some decent secular jobs to go into the ministry. But the last few months I’ve felt a weight, and that usually means it’s time to listen. One day during meditation, I heard the words, ‘It’s time.’ I decided, ‘Let’s go and pull the trigger on it.’ It hurts to leave it behind and let it go, but I do believe I’m getting pulled out of here for a reason.”
The church’s leadership team has appointed a search committee to identify an interim pastor to replace Tully. Then after a period of about a year, the church is expected to form a similar search committee to locate his permanent replacement.
Tully had no direct input
on who his successor will be.
“I think they need to continue the tradition of expository preaching (thoroughly explaining the meaning of a specific Scripture to clearly communicate the author’s original intent),” said Tully. “I think it’s what people have gotten used to. The people who come out are looking for that kind of worship experience and teaching experience. I think they need to find a person with a different set of skills. I’m very poor at administration. We need someone who can step in and help with administration. I have a lot of faith in the people on that committee.”
Known locally as “the church at the top of the hill,” Salem Hellers is one of about 20 spiritual institutions operating on the Conestoga Valley landscape. In any given week, Salem Hellers welcomes 85 attendees to its religious
services.
“A vast majority (of parishioners) have grown up in that area,” said Tully.
“The goal is to glorify God, grow in spirit and go into the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is a church that’s been in the community for 300 years. It’s a rock, a foundation of the community. Our worship style is very traditional. We remain a church that follows a liturgy. We have a choir, and we sing from a hymn book.”
Salem Hellers was founded in 1725 by a group of Germans who had encountered prior religious persecution in Europe. At various times throughout its history, the church, whose current building was constructed in 1860, has been associated with other denominations.

Rotary Clubs announce peacebuilding initiatives
Motorists driving on Route 81 may have seen a Rotary billboard informing travelers that they are entering Rotary District 7390, which this year was designated by Rotary International as a Peacebuilder District. There are 39 Rotary clubs in this district and 46,000 clubs around the world.
The clubs of District 7390 - from Carlisle to Paradise and from Millersville to the Mason-Dixon Line - are teaming up with the internationally focused Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) to address root causes of conflict and division. The Rotary Clubs will tap into the global resources of Rotary International and IEP to educate members and the public on how to spread the values of positive peace. Clubs will sponsor workshops and erect peace poles in their communities.
Positive peace is defined as local and global peace built on investments in economic development as well as social attitudes that foster peace. These partnerships demonstrate commitment to building environments that are conducive to sustainable peace both locally and globally.
during its first Stories by Candlelight event, which will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The organization will use electric candles to avoid the risks of having open flames inside the historic property, but Stories by Candlelight will feature authentic stories and music rooted in both Mennonite and indigenous culture.
Interpreters will be stationed in the 1719 Museum to tell the story of the Herr family, which formerly lived in the house. The storytellers will also explore a selection of familyfriendly narratives from “Martyrs Mirror,” and a group of a cappella singers will perform English translations of hymns featured in the “Ausbund,” an ancient hymnal that remains integral to Amish and Mennonite practices today.

of a traditional Native American home located on the 1719 Museum’s property, visitors will have an opportunity to hear various stories and songs cherished by the Eastern Woodland tribes. Munsee artist Barry Lee will perform traditional songs and share stories rooted in indigenous culture and history. “We want to honor the people who were here before Mennonite immigrants arrived,” said Heather Strahin, Mennonite Life’s museum administrator. “It’s important for us to make sure we’re not only focusing on Mennonite stories, but the stories of interrelated groups as well.”
Lee is a member of Circle Legacy Center, a Native American advocacy group that frequently partners with Mennonite Life to share indigenous history and culture during community events and programs in the Willow Street and Conestoga areas. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Mennonite Life held its annual Candlelight Christmas Tour
every December. After several community members asked Strahin if Mennonite Life would host another winter event, she decided to organize Stories by Candlelight this year. There is little evidence that the Herr family held typical Christmas celebrations, and indigenous communities did not observe the holiday, prompting Strahin to highlight each respective group’s unique traditions. Tickets may be purchased in advance online prior to the event, and a discounted rate will be offered to children ages 7 to 16. Light refreshments will be included in the price of admission. To purchase a ticket or for more information, visit https://menno nitelife.org/events.

Master Watershed Steward program
Penn State Extension will offer informational webinars about the Master Watershed Steward program, which educates and empowers volunteers to carry out watershed projects and education in their communities. The identical sessions will occur on Thursdays, Jan. 9 and 16, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. It is designed for those who want to make a positive difference in their communities, have a keen interest in the environment, are willing to learn and teach, and have time to volunteer.
The webinar will share information about the Master Watershed Steward program training, structure, commitment, and requirements; the types of projects in which the Master Watershed Steward volunteer team engages; program partners; and Penn State Extension and the land-grant university system.
The Master Watershed Stewards’ projects include teaching adults and children about water quality, wildlife habitats, and the environment; developing educational materials; organizing and conducting educational events, stream cleanups, and invasive plant removal projects; designing and maintaining demonstration gardens; conducting stream monitoring projects and research; researching and writing newsletters and online articles; and partnering with municipal officials on projects such as bioswales, rain gardens, native meadows, and other green stormwater management solutions.
The workshop is free of charge, but registration is required by Wednesday, Jan. 8. For more information and to register, visit https://extension .psu.edu/ and search for “Master Watershed Steward Training Info for Dauphin, Lancaster, and Lebanon Counties.” Questions may be directed to program coordinator Jim Lewis at jml8093@ psu.edu.
