SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LVIII • NO 2

Finding New Ways To Serve BY ANN MEAD ASH

“It started a long time ago and has always been the third Friday of the month,” said Patty Williams, one of the organizers of the free community meal held at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, on the third Friday of the month beginning at 5:55 p.m. The program was initiated more than 20 years ago by Heather Furman. Prior to the onset of COVID-19, church members were feeding 60 to 100 area residents at a sit-down meal in the fellowship hall. “Everything changed for COVID,” explained Williams, noting that the organizers switched to a takeout format in 2020. “But we didn’t miss any meals.” The drive-through meal distribution is now accomplished by volunteers working under the church portico. Masked and gloved volunteers work out of coolers, handing out individual meals that were made and packed at the church.

Community Meal Organizers Soldier On Meals include a main dish, such as macaroni and cheese, meatballs, chicken strips, pot pie, beef barbecue, or Amish wedding casserole, which mixes meats and sides associated with Thanksgiving. Side dishes are usually green beans, applesauce or fruit, and a dessert is included. In addition, the group also receives bread from Panera, which is handed out with bottles of water. Zion Lutheran partners with Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, and volunteers from that church cook and distribute the meal every other month. The church now gives away an average of 150 meals each month. Williams explained that since instituting the takeout system, volunteers work in crews to limit the number of people in a small area. “We have two cooks and two people to pack (in the kitchen),” said Williams, adding that this is a reduction from four packers previously. “Karen Brunken comes in on a Thursday to get everything ready,”

When New Holland author Shelleen Weaver spoke at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Locust Grove Campus, 2257 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, on Dec. 6, she brought along her friend Love Bird, the title character from her first book in a series on the biblical Fruits of the Spirit. Principal Miles Yoder took on the persona of the mockingbird, handing out bookmarks and candy to more than 100 children in prekindergarten through fifth grade, and once mocking Weaver as she began to read from the second “Fruit Fables” book, “Glub Glum’s Ship Flip.” See Locust Grove pg 5

“There are many more who helped with the meals preCOVID, and the entire congregation supports our meals ministry,” Williams noted. Williams reported that 1,765 meals were served in 2020, and that more than 1,600 had been served by November 2021. In addition to the monthly meal, volunteers prepare and deliver 60 meals to Grace Lutheran Church in Lancaster four times per year, during months that have five Wednesdays. “We make (the meals) and put them in coolers and deliver them, and they give them out in their parking lot,” said Williams. There is no need to register to pick up a meal. Readers who would like to know more about the church may visit www.zionleola.org. Those who have specific questions may call 717-656-9200.

Williams stated, explaining that prep work includes packaging bread and butter or fruit and desserts. Williams lauded Marie Antolick’s expertise in making macaroni and cheese, noting that Antolick arrives around 2 p.m. on the day of a meal distribution. Ron and Mary Smith take flyers to Nathan’s Village, a nearby apartment complex, to put in doors prior to each meal, and Tara and Don Fausnaught deliver 65 meals to Nathan’s Village Apartments and another 20 to Zook’s Motel. “Pat Kohler puts together a nice prayer card to go with (the meals),” said Williams. Other volunteers include Lorraine Smoker, Ed and Salome Sieber, Cathy and Bruce Edling, Ethan Proch, Megan Bixler, Dottie Anderson, Keri Bloom, Jane Hurst, Paige and Sydney Harris, and Nazie Davenshar.

strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Thursday, Jan. 6, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County park system, visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control as she recited them along with the gathering. Weaver also answered questions about writing and publishing, telling the children that writing is the easy part and that she has already completed the seven books she has yet to publish, telling them that the book based on “peace,” about a workaholic beaver who needs to find balance in his life, will be published in the spring. She encouraged the students to keep their writing, especially their poetry. Before concluding the chapel presentation, Weaver taught the students a song about Glub Glum’s change in perspective and prayed that they would keep their outlook focused on God. “Glub Glum is the Eeyore of the ocean,” explained Weaver before beginning to read. “He is ho-hum and sad, but he learns to be joyful.” Weaver went on to read the story of the bottom feeder with downcast eyes whose perspective is completely changed when an impact from above flips him over and redirects his view to show him all the blessings around him he has been missing. The difference in position changes Glub Glum’s outlook and gives him the opportunity to experience joy. Weaver’s books come complete with discussion questions in a section called “Let’s Chew on It …” so Weaver asked the children “Why was Glub Glum sulky?” and “What happened to change his attitude?” among other questions. She compared the beautiful things Glub Glum finds in the ocean to the beautiful things in all lives. “There are also hard things to deal with (in each life),” she noted. “We have a choice. We can look at the hard things and be sad or look at the beauty and be grateful.” Weaver also explained what it means to gain a higher perspective, as Glub Glum does at the end of the book. “When we look around and are grateful for what we have, gratitude shifts our attitude,” she said. Children suggested new names for Glub Glum now that he has a brighter outlook, including Happy Tappy, Glub Glad, and Joy Joy. Before reading, Weaver talked to the children about fables, which she explained are made up stories that teach lessons and often feature animals. She compared the tales to the parables of Jesus, which teach lessons on how to live. She also quizzed the children on their knowledge of the Fruits of the Spirit, encouraging them to list all nine aloud -

Santiago first met Baumgardner when both were involved with Gospel Express giving presentations in South Carolina prisons. At the time, Santiago worked with Teen Challenge. “I took the students down to participate, and Ryan was one of the presenters doing his ventriloquism in the prisons,” explained Santiago, who said he had been considering Baumgardner, who has performed locally and on television, for the Valentine Sweetheart Banquet for a few years. “It finally worked out to be a good fit,” said Santiago, who noted that as a traveling performer with a wife and family, Baumgardner understands the journey of marriage and how being away can affect that institution. RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or have developed other kinds of addictions. Santiago said he is grateful that the Lord has sustained the ministry. The student housing facility, located in East Lampeter Township near Strasburg, can house up to 12 men.
