NHELC Harvests Sprouts For Peace BY ANN MEAD ASH

When 4- and 5-year-olds attending the New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC) were asked about their experiences tending and harvesting the Sprouts for Peace Garden, which is located on the New Holland Mennonite Church campus along with NHELC, their answers were colorful. Francisco, who is 5, said that he enjoyed both picking

fficer Kelly Osborne, community service/public information officer with Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster and the organizer of the first Shop With a Cop event held on Dec. 5 at Lafayette Fire Company, was overwhelmed at the response she received when she began planning the program in early fall. “I have been amazed at the outpouring and generosity of people for this program,” said Osborne, who hopes to expand the event into other areas of the county in the future. The program involved 15 preselected students meeting with 15 volunteer State Police officers and a few police from local districts at the fire station at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 5. Osborne had paired up the elementary-age children with the officers. Each child was given a $150 gift card to Kohl’s, and the students and officers were bused to the businesss’s Lincoln Highway store so students could shop for family

that students who had been the victim of a crime or other difficult circumstances were given priority. Osborne worked with Camp Cadet, which is connected to Troop J, where she has been involved since 2006. “Camp Cadet has existed since 1971,” said Osborne, who said that the 501(c)(3) is run by a civilian board of directors. To fund the program, Osborne sold “Shop With a Cop” yard signs, and she found donors plentiful. “We raised money to help fund it for the next few years going forward,” she said. Before the event, Osborne was looking forward to giving the children a special experience. “All the families whose children were accepted were ecstatic,” she said. Following the program, the “Troop J Lancaster Shop With a Cop” Facebook page had garnered positive comments and expressions of gratitude. The mother of a young man named Sebastian who took part wrote, “Thanks to everyone for their kindness and this positively amazing experience.”

members. Armed with lists of possible gifts, the students and officers shopped and then returned to the station, where the officers helped wrap the gifts. Each student left with a bagged lunch when a parent picked him or her up at 12:30 p.m. Troop J - Lancaster, located at 2099 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, covers 19 townships and two boroughs in the county. The officers are particularly active in the eastern portion of the county and the Southern End. The two school districts that are full time for the officers are Pequea Valley and Solanco. Osborne gave priority to those areas when organizing the event, accepting nominations from pastors, school counselors, and other members of the community for children living in the greater Paradise area and the Southern End. She initially hoped to include 30 children, but COVID-19 restrictions forced her to scale back to 15. “I am giving the opportunity to kids who would benefit from positive law enforcement interaction,” Osborne said, noting

corn and picking bugs off potatoes. Meara, age 4, said she picked tomatoes, cucumbers, and corn, but she noted that she enjoyed chasing lightning bugs each Tuesday evening during the weekly watering and weeding. Andrew, also age 4, recalled eating the fresh cherry tomatoes. The growing season of 2020 was the second for the garden at the church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland. The season saw the garden expand to two plots - one near the church parking lot and the other at the far end of the church’s property which effectively doubled the size of the garden. The theme of this year’s breakfast, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” takes its name from King’s final book. The breakfast will feature Heather McGhee as the keynote speaker. McGhee is a senior fellow at Demos, a public policy think tank devoted to creating a democracy and economy rooted in racial equity. She holds a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Yale University and a law degree from the University of California at Berkley School of Law. McGhee is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Civic Participation, and she serves on the board of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and Indivisible. She is the author of “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together,” which is slated to be published in February. The honorary event chair is Ron Ford, the first African American elected to Lancaster City Council and the first African American elected president of the council. To date, he is the first and only African American elected as a Lancaster County commissioner. The breakfast, which is a fundraiser for the Crispus

Attucks Community Center (CACC), will feature Danielle Woods of WGAL-TV as master of ceremonies. CACC has been a fixture in southeast Lancaster city since 1927. The center is known for its efforts to improve the quality of life for youths and families in Lancaster by providing services designed to promote community prosperity and physical and mental health. CACC is a program of Community Action Partnership, known as Lancaster County’s largest anti-poverty organization. Tickets for the event, which must be purchased by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14, may be obtained at www.caplanc.org/MLK;, by emailing bmitchell@caplanc .org, or by calling 717-2997388, ext. 3099.

for NHELC meals is the first priority for the harvest. The second is to provide food for NHELC families to take home with them. Next, food is sent to CrossNet Ministries Food and Nutrition Center, which is overseen by Amy Marburger. “The amount of produce coming in would easily have served more than 40 families every week,” recalled Marburger, who noted that garden project manager Ray Hurst began bringing produce to CrossNet in early May. Hurst said that lettuce and onions were first and that in early November, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli were still being harvested. In addition to CrossNet, the garden provided produce to the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank in Terre Hill and to Lighthouse Assembly of God Church for a twicemonthly food distribution. Hurst said that a group of about 15 to 20 volunteers made up of church members, employees from the adjacent Goodville Mutual office, families of NHELC students, and others came to help on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Other workers included students from Revelations of Freedom Ministries and young men sent to do com-

munity service by Judge Jonathan Heisse. RanckHower recalled that the Tuesday gatherings often ended with watermelon snacks and in the fall with fellowship around a bonfire. Engaging NHELC students to help in the garden was not difficult. “The cherry tomatoes were a big pull,” said Hurst. When Marburger noted that cherry tomatoes had not been prevalent among the donations from the garden, Ranck-Hower stated that the majority had fed NHELC garden helpers. Hurst planted 200 pounds of potatoes and 300 sweet potato plants, and Marburger noted that an abundance of sweet potatoes had fed CrossNet clients, including families that are enrolled in the Power Packs Project. She added that the 10-pound cabbages were so large, she cut them in half for smaller families. About 12,749 pounds of vegetables were harvested. “I targeted for 12,000 pounds,” recalled Hurst. Marburger reported that more than 7,000 pounds of produce from the garden came to CrossNet. Readers who would like to know more about the Sprouts for Peace Garden may visit www.newhollandmc.org.

The first session will end on Thursday, Jan. 28. Consecutive sessions will be offered beginning, Monday, Feb. 1; Monday, March 1; Monday, March 29; Monday, April 26; and Monday, May 24. Classes, which last an hour, are broken into five age groups. The kindergarten class is coed, but first and second grades, third through fifth grades, sixth through eighth grades, and ninth through 12th grades are divided by gender. Kurland noted that each monthly session is focused on a particular activity or sport. “We start out with the basic concepts and skills, and we build on those throughout the month,” said Kurland. “By the end of the month, we’re into the games ... whether it is softball or swimming or basketball.” Kurland also introduces students to games they may not be familiar with, such as gaga ball, as well as international games. A segment is devoted to the activities that were once part of the Presidential Fitness Test, which include a mile run, a shuttle run, and the V-sit reach. To promote social growth, Kurland has designed the curriculum to include

When Michael Kurland graduated from the University of Tennessee, he headed to Jacksonville, Fla., with an idea. “I realized there was a large homeschool contingency down there,” said Kurland. “I started a homeschool PE (physical education) program.” In 2003, Kurland began teaching a curriculum he designed, attracting 400 students the first year, and eventually doubling the size of the program. Later, Kurland took the concept to a more urban setting in Maryland, where hundreds of students took part, some driving up to an hour for a class. A year ago, Kurland came to the Lancaster area where he took the position of youth sports and activities manager with the Manheim Township Recreation Department. His background came to the attention of his supervisor Matt Stopa, and the result is a homeschool gym class for Lancaster County students. Classes for any homeschooled children in the county were slated to begin on Jan. 4 at the Overlook Activity Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster.

teamwork and building individual self-esteem. “Parents receive progress reports after each session,” said Kurland, adding that the course makes it easy for students who are at middle and high school levels to show they have obtained all their physical education credits. Kurland, who holds a degree in sports management, will be the sole teacher during the first year. Because of COVID19 restrictions, classes will be limited to 10 students to provide for social distancing. In the future, class sizes may range up to 20 students. Other safety measures will include taking temperatures,

wearing masks and gloves, handwashing, and sanitizing class areas between classes. There is a fee to take part in each session. If a homeschool co-op group wants to keep certain students together, Kurland is open to creating a class for that group. He also said the possibility of including students who are taking part in virtual schooling exists. Readers who would like to register children for the classes may visit www.manheim township.org/253/recreation -and-park-planning or call 717-290-7180.

In the spring of 2020, the Giant Company launched the Flashfood app at four Giant stores in Lancaster, located at 1008 Lititz Pike, 550 Centerville Road, 1360 Columbia Ave. and 1605 Lititz Pike. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items like meat, produce boxes, bakery items and snacks that are nearing their “best before” dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers may pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store.

To learn which stores offer the Flashfood app, readers may visit www.flashfood.com. In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through its Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners. To celebrate the partnership, new Flashfood users in Pennsylvania and Maryland can get a discount on their first purchase by signing up at https://flashfood.app. link/TryFF10.

County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Sunday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the

environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Jan. 6, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-2998215 on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County park system, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.
