Distributing Joy And Building Goodwill

Looking back at the December 2022 events that gave Lafayette and Witmer fire companies opportunities to give away 6,000 toys between them, Suzi Sutton, who volunteers with both organizations, pointed out that the distribution benefits the community and the 100% volunteer fire stations. “The exciting part is building awareness around our volunteer fire (companies) and in our community and being able to give joy,” she said.

Witmer Fire Protective Association, 455 Mount Sidney Road, Witmer, held its third Milk and Cookies With Santa on Dec. 3. Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster, set up at Tanger Outlets on Dec. 10 and toured its coverage area with Santa aboard a company truck.

The toy distribution came about through a partnership with The First Responders Children’s Foundation Toy Express, an organization founded to bring toys to the children of first responders killed in the 9/11 attacks. The organization later expanded its mission to bring happiness to children in 150 cities. The organizations joined

up due to Chris Pautler, who had previously served in a college internship with Lancaster EMS and who was connected to Lafayette when the fire company partnered with Lancaster EMS to take part in the Extra Give. After Pautler graduated from Millersville University, he went to work for Toy Express as a key creative marketing staff member.

Pautler and Toy Express CEO and president Jillian Crane both attended the Lafayette distribution. Crane rode on

Lafayette’s out-of-service truck and visited the Tanger giveaway. “(Toy Express representatives) jumped in and were hands-on,” reported Sutton, who added that the visitors were able to see the Country Club Apartments and Oaks community locations that day.

To promote the events to families in the community, Sutton said the organizations connected with Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County, Power Packs Project, and

Conestoga Valley School District for help raising awareness. “We networked with nonprofits … to make it successful,” she said, adding that Lafayette serves a diverse area along the Route 30 corridor. “We wanted to promote this for everyone, including tourists (who) are part of our call volume.”

Sutton said Lafayette was pleased to have community helpers take part in the distribution along with active fire crew members. She sees the effort

as a win-win. “It’s how we build community bonds and relationships that will help sustain us,” she said.

More information about Witmer Fire Protective may be found at www.witmerfire.com. Readers who would like to learn more about Lafayette Fire Company, named for the Revolutionary War general who lined his troops up along the trail that is now Route 30, may visit www.lafayettefire.com.

Brent Henderson To Speak At Sportsman Banquet

Whether recounting stories of catching black mambas by hand or surviving a shipwreck off the Alaskan coast, outdoorsman, author, and Christian musician Brent Henderson has one goal for his audiences. “They are listening to more than great outdoor stories,” said Henderson. “(Because) there’s a relationship (they) can have with the One who made it all.”

When Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants Inc., looks for volunteers, carpentry, HVAC, and plumbing skills are not necessarily a requirement.

“Physical (home) repairs are important, but we also put an emphasis on building relationships,” said Cotton of Servants Inc., an organization that performs home repairs and construction for those in need.

“I think one of the things a lot of our clients are facing, in addition to the physical hardship of needing home repairs, is loneliness,” Cotton pointed out, See Servants Inc. pg 3

Henderson will share his stories with attendees of the Restart Training Center Ministry’s (RTCM) eighth annual sportsman dinner on Tuesday, March 21, and Wednesday, March 22, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have developed addictions as a means of coping with difficulties.

Originally from Bethlehem, Pa., Henderson worked in a steel mill following high school leaving town to attend college in 1981, but instead venturing into Christian contemporary music. “I met a guy named Steven Curtis Chapman, and he and I traveled for a while,” recalled Henderson, who later played with artists Sandi Patty and Crystal Lewis and the group Avalon. In 2002, he became the worship leader and ministry pastor with an organization in Meadville. “God moved me into speaking full time to men,” said Henderson, who credited God with mixing his passion for men’s ministry with his love for the outdoors in his talks. “It was the perfect fit.” In that capacity, he likes to bring audience members to the edges of their seats. “I have hunted everywhere from Africa to Alaska,”

noted Henderson. “I’ve had a lot of crazy experiences.” Among those are a brown bear attack and being stranded in the mountains when the flight back was delayed by bad weather. “(The stories) always lead back to God’s faithfulness and care,” shared Henderson. Henderson is the author of “Into the Wilds” and “The Roar Within.”

Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of RTCM, said that Henderson was recommended by Don Higgins, who spoke at a previous sports banquet. In addition to hearing Henderson’s talk, attendees may bid on items in a live auction or purchase tickets for giveaways. Live auction items will include a cabin getaway, a 6-by-6-foot octagon ground blind, a Puerto Rican meal for up to 10 people, a deep-sea fishing trip, and tickets to a men’s retreat being presented by Hender-

son. Ticket auction items include an in-line muzzleloader, a Ravin R26X crossbow, and a Weber grill. Grand prizes will be a Mathews bow and a Wicked Ridge Raider 400 De-Cock.

The facility would offer 12 beds and provide rooms students could rent while working locally. RTCM would continue to provide meals, transportation, and a supportive environment. The goal is to raise $1.3 million to purchase the building and a total of $1.6 million to include funding for reservations.

Tickets, which are necessary to attend the banquet, will be discounted through Tuesday, Feb. 28. To purchase tickets, please call 717-3043291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org.

adding that many clients are widowed people or single mothers. “(They are) people who need support in general,” said Cotton. “For that reason, the organization’s volunteer application asks candidates to rate their skill levels, but Cotton commented that this is not meant to exclude anyone. “It just gives us a better idea where we can plug people in, so they can feel useful,” he explained. The application helps Servants Inc. put teams together and pair willing learners with those who have the ability to teach. There’s a need for skilled workers as well. “We have some intense projects that involve plumbing and framing,” Cotton said.

Servants Inc., which now has a fulltime project manager in Lancaster County, is mostly active in the ELANCO area as well as Columbia and Marietta. During the week, Thursday is the designated volunteer workday, but Saturdays are scheduled to accommodate working volunteers and students. Right now, volunteers are needed as the organization’s client list is growing. “It’s a delicate balance,” said Cotton of expanding the client and volunteer lists at the same time.

Since opening a Lancaster County branch, a few years ago, the nonprofit has formed a partnership with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “(CrossNet) does intake applications … for the services we provide,” said Cotton.

Marilyn Guzmán, social services program manager with CrossNet, reported that one family feared losing its home due the building’s condition. “We prayed, and God sent us a miracle in the form of men and women who work with and volunteer with Servants,” family members told Guzmán, noting that the volunteers were kind and understanding. “Just knowing we now have a safe home helps us sleep better at night, they told her.

Servants Inc. has also partnered with ELANCO Connect, which includes several greater Bow-

mansville area churches. Servants Inc. is hoping to provide a local halfweek work camp experience during the summer months. The organization has also become involved in the Pequea Valley School District First Choice Discovery Program, a workbased program offering career exploration and mentoring to every sophomore, to introduce students to developing home repair skills.

The organization, which has branches in York and Adams counties, completed more than 110 projects and had more than 10,000 volunteer hours total in 2022. Servants Inc. also sends recovery teams to areas of the U.S. hit by disasters as well as organizing international missions teams. Those who wish to volunteer may visit www.servants.org and click on the “Volunteer” tab or call 717-378-0336.

Thanks to the balmy weather currently hanging around Central Pennsylvania it may not feel like winter, but rest assured, it is. That means the high school sports scene moves inside to gymnasiums, natatoriums, bowling alleys and gun ranges.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The boy’s hoopsters are only nine games deep into their season and sport a 4-5 overall mark with the same 1-1 mark in the L-L. The season opened with back-to-back wins over Gettysburg and Cocalico, earning the Buckskins the title in their own tip-off tournament. CV was unable to replicate that success at the Eastern York Holiday Tournament, earning

a spot in the title game with an 82-77 double-overtime win over Spring Grove. Their championship hopes were dashed with a 69-61 loss to Eastern York in that title game.

CV opened the 2023 portion of their schedule by hosting Penn Manor on January 3rd. The Comets used 25 points from Ethan Benne to leave Witmer with a 57-49 victory. Griffen Rishell fell just shy of game high honors, finishing with 24 points in the loss.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The girls’ basketball team has logged 11 games so far, going 2-9 with a 1-1 mark in league games. The lone league victory came on December 16th when CV topped Solanco by a 62-45 final. The Lady

‘Bucks’ other win came on December 29th in the consolation game of the Northeastern Holiday Tournament with CV slipping by East Pennsboro, 39-36. Gabrielle Moore (nine points) and Rhiannon Henry (eight points) led the way with Erin Figart chipping in with seven points.

Conestoga Valley returned to Lancaster-Lebanon League action to kick off the new year, falling to Penn Manor by a 28-22 final on January 3rd. Henry posted a team high eight points in a game the Lady Buckskins were in until a 10-5 Penn Manor run through the final frame.

WRESTLING

The wrestling team has split their time between standard dual matches and big

tournaments as the seasons unfolds. The Buckskins were victorious in all four dual matches, knocking off Penn Manor (44-28), Solanco (3731), Warwick (50-21) and most recently Cedar Crest by a 71-0 final.

The shut out of Cedar Crest happened on January 4th and featured just two forfeits. Mathew Lopez (285) and Nick Horton (107) enjoyed the two easy wins in the middle of the match. The bulk of CV’s points came from their seven pinfall victories starting with Miles Acosta (152) and Luke Needham (160). Melvin Stoltzfoos (189) and Zander Rider (215) followed by Townsen Bagley (121), Luke Morley (127) and Bryce Bowman (133) rounding out

the group. Abdoul Akala (172) and Omar Vargas (114) posted tech fall wins while Andrew Stoltzfoos claimed the last bonus point win with his major decision at 145. Teagan Ruble picked up the win at 139 with a 7-3 final.

CV opened the season with a 12th place finish at the Williamsport Top Hat Tournament on December 2nd and 3rd, added a thirdplace finish at the Carlisle Classic on December 16th and 17th and wrapped up their big match stretch with a 14th place finish at their own Neil Turner Memorial Holiday Classic on the 28th and 29th.

SWIMMING

The swim teams have spent the early part of the season swimming against the tide. That has led the Lady Buckskins to a 0-2 mark with losses to Warwick and McCaskey. The boys’ team managed a 94-45 over the Red Tornado but fell to Warwick by a slim 79-70 final.

In the win against McCaskey, CV won nine of 11 events, including all three relays, with Connor Ludwig taking both the 100 butterfly and the 200 free and Daniel Ivanchikov adding top times

in the 50 free and 100 back. J. Sayers added the best 500 free and Aidan Campbell took the 100 breaststroke. Ludwig, Ivanchikov and Campbell each swam on two winning relay teams.

BOWLING

Over in the bowling alleys the Buckskins sit at 1-4 as the calendar flips to 2023. CV’s lone win came over McCaskey with losses to Hempfield and Elizabethtown before and to Warwick and Ephrata after.

Against McCaskey, Ryan Muckle rolled a 223 in the second game and finished with a 608 series to lead the Bucks.

RIFLE

The rifle season started well with a 488-487 win over Manheim Township on December 13th but losses to Wilson (489-488), Governor Mifflin (492-486) and Ephrata (498489) dropped the Buckskins to 1-3 on the season.

Meghan Smith fired a 99 to lead the Bucks over the Streaks. Dominick Santamaria and S. Land both followed with 98s while William Roland hit 97 and Hunter Kleckner rounded out with a 96.

In the nine point loss to Ephrata, Santamaria and Lydia Salmons both hit 99s with Kleckner close behind at 98 while the Mounts top four marksmen fired 100s.

Helping Singers To Find Their Voice

Abrom briefly lived and taught in New Jersey before finally moving to Lancaster in 1998 when her husband

Jo Abrom

was hired as Lafayette Elementary School’s principal. Since the beginning of her teaching career, Abrom has continued her own education via conferences and other methods of exploring the art of singing. “I’m always in learning mode and trying to find new techniques,” said Abrom. “I want to bring the most current methods to my students.”

Abrom currently teaches at Sight & Sound’s conservatory in Ronks in addition to teaching private lessons through Abrom Vocal Studio, located

just off Harrisburg Pike in Hempfield School District, and she worked as the Fulton Theatre’s music director for five years. Abrom’s students range from preschoolers to senior citizens, and many of her students are performers in local productions at Sight & Sound, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre and Fulton Theatre. Abrom also teaches actors in school plays, singers in local bands, students looking to study classical theater in college and those who simply wish to sing in their church choir. “There’s a wealth of musical experiences for people to take part of in (Lancaster),” said Abrom. “It’s so exciting because everyone comes to lessons for a different reason.”

In 2020, Abrom wrote “College Audition Success! A Survival Guide For Musical Theatre and Voice Majors,” a book detailing key elements of the audition process and how to prepare for it. Abrom’s book is available for purchase on www.Amazon.com. “Every lesson is different and every voice is unique,” said Abrom. “I love taking a singer and helping them to grow and to be the best that they can be.”

Stockings For Soldiers Campaign Breaks Record

For the 13th year, Blue Ridge collaborated with Keystone Military Families (KMF) Stockings For Soldiers in its mission to make the holidays a little bit brighter for soldiers stationed around the world.

Through a fundraising and marketing awareness campaign, Blue Ridge helped bring in funds and other community support to a program that provides gift-filled stockings to soldiers who will not be home for Christmas. KMF reports it was a record-breaking year with 11,180 holiday-filled stockings shipped to soldiers around the world just in time for Christmas.

The effort raised more than $41,000 in monetary donations to support the costs of purchasing, shipping and distributing the giftfilled stockings; provided more than 22,000 personalized messages to show support for the military personnel; distributed more than 4,000 handmade ornaments and handsewn stockings; collected 6,000 pounds of stocking stuffers, as well as 250 stuffed animals; and received more than 200 volunteer hours from several of KMF’s partners, which sent volunteers to work at KMF’s Shoemakersville facility.

Blue Ridge made it easy for community members to donate money through a secure website using PayPal or a debit/credit card. Every dollar raised for KMF’s Stockings For Soldiers helped fund the packing of holiday stockings filled with food, hygiene products, holiday decorations, Christmas cards and other requested items, according to Cindy Mellinger, Blue Ridge marketing/community relations

coordinator and the Stockings For Soldiers central Pennsylvania project coordinator.

Christmas Tree Recycling

County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the

funds are used to purchase emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.

According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.

For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.
