Educating The Community About Addiction Potter’s House Plans Workshop BY ANN MEAD ASH
bout five years ago, Lanny Millette, director of donor relations with The Potter’s House and The Potter’s House of Ruth, heard Joel Jakubowski, who is now men’s ministry director with The Potter’s House, speak at a workshop in Quarryville. “I got excited about bringing that same type of information to the people of eastern Lancaster County,” recalled Millette. “The Potter’s House appreciates the way the community has supported us, and that was a way to give back information, help, and support.” Millette approached Jere Cassel, pastor of Conestoga Church of the Brethren, about using the centrally located church to hold the workshop. Cassel and his congregation agreed to help, and the first of several seminars was held. That series will continue with Addiction: Signs, Symptoms, and Prevention, a talk by Jakubowski followed by time for questions and answers, at the church,

Coming off a successful 5K at Millersville University in November, Katie Sandoe, executive director of Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, and Jen West, program director, are excited about the 2022 season. “We are looking ahead to spring,” said West. “We are excited to be back to a 10-week season in person.” See GOTR pg 2

A second drive was held during the summer of 2021 and a third drive from Nov. 29 through Dec. 13. “It’s something we wanted to continue to do because there’s a need,” said Keim, who noted that she hung up flyers and sent out emails encouraging staff and residents to bring unexpired, nonperishable food items, as well as personal care items to the lobby, in the Wheat Ridge building. Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator, included the information in “In Touch,” the biweekly newsletter to all campus residents. See Fairmount pg 8

Indeed, the program hopes to have teams in every Lancaster County school district for the spring semester, and coaches will be needed to help make that happen. “We are really looking for the support of the community and for coaches to get involved (because) the need will be greater than ever to serve more girls this spring,” said West. Teams have also formed at community sites, such as parks and churches. Coaching requires a commitment of up to three hours a week, and Sandoe noted that GOTR coaches need not be teachers. “The majority of sites are schools, but you don’t have to be a teacher to coach,” she said. “We would love that our coaches reflect the community that we serve,” she said, adding that coaches need not even live within the district where

showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills. Registration for the 2022 spring season will open Tuesday, Feb. 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 7. The GOTR 5K presented by OAL will be held on Saturday, May 21, at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. The fall 5K at Millersville attracted 1,000 runners,
including 400 girls, running buddies, and immediate family members. “If you’re interested in learning more about coaching … we encourage (you) to reach out,” said Sandoe. Those who are interested in coaching may contact Jennifer West at jwest@gotrlancaster.org. More information about the program and the 5K may be found at www.gotrlancaster.org.

they coach. West added that mothers, fathers, and community members can be coaches. “You don’t have to be a runner,” she said. “We welcome anybody and everybody to coach girls.” Volunteer GOTR coaches receive benefits, including guaranteeing a daughter a spot on a team and receiving a discount for her registration. Free CPR and first aid training are offered, and all coaches are trained to lead teams. “It’s a chance to be a positive role model and inspiration to the girls - a leader and someone to talk to,” said West. According to Sandoe, coaches have told her that they witness positive changes in team members. “They say, ‘I have seen how it transforms how the girls think about themselves and each other and their attitudes,’” she reported, adding that teachers have told her they believe in the impact of the program because they see GOTR lessons lived out in their classrooms. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One international study found that 85% of girls in the program

these workshops as a service to the community,” noted Jakubowski, who added that this particular workshop is “geared toward giving families a preventative and appropriately reactive approach to the potential for addiction to enter into their families.” During his talk, Jakubowski will detail signs and symptoms of addiction, which affects nearly 70% of families. “One symptom is abandonment of routines and daily responsibilities,” said Jakubowski, who listed additional symptoms such as behavioral changes; emotional highs and lows; and changes in sleeping, eating, and social patterns, along with physical fatigue. He will address prevention of addiction problems through education, which includes having conversations with children prior to any signs or symptoms. “(I’d like attendees to gain) a conscientious awareness of what addiction looks like so as to be able to identify it,” Jakubowski said.
Millette added that education is essential to raising awareness. “It is recognizing that addiction touches us even when we are unaware,” he said, “because a neighbor or a family member could be struggling, and (knowing what to look for) will help to bring it to the surface.” Cassel pointed out that hosting the workshops has impacted the Conestoga Church congregation. “I think out of the addiction seminars grew the interest in the church to make space for CCARS addiction counseling,” he said. “This is a continuation of making the community aware of a problem that we face.” CCARS, one of the few licensed establishments offering addiction counseling in the northern and eastern parts of Lancaster County, is housed in the church. The organization will be a sponsor of the workshop along with The Potter’s House. days later to post a 487-483 win over Wilson on the 21st. The Buckskins absorbed another loss, this one by a 489-485 final to Governor Mifflin, on January 4th. BOWLING The Buckskin bowling team has found the lanes largely unforgiving this season, sporting a 9-26 mark after five matches. The squad’s lone win came on December 14th with a 7-0 sweep of McCaskey. The Buckskins were on the other end of a sweep on December 17th and 22nd losses to Elizabethtown and Ephrata, as well as a January 4th setback to Cedar Crest. Add in a 5-2 season opening loss to Manheim Central on the 13th and you get CV’s 9-26 mark. Many sports mantras have to do with always looking forward or not dwelling on the past but as we kick off our 2022 sports coverage, it is a good time to look back at how the CV winter sports teams have fared in their short 2021-2022 journey. We’ll start with the swimming teams which have gone back-and-forth with the boy’s topping Penn Manor by a 9743 final on December 23rd after absorbing losses to Manheim Township, 134-34, on the 14th and to Cedar Crest,
96-53, on the 16th. Tack on a January 4th loss to Ephrata by a 108-60 final and you get CV’s 1-3 mark. Over on the Lady Buckskins side there was an 82-81 win over Cedar Crest sandwiched between a 147-31 loss to Township and a75-63 loss to Penn Manor with a 121-37 loss to Ephrata tacked on for the same 1-3 mark as the boys. WRESTLING The wrestling team sports a 1-1 record thanks to a 51-18, December 15th, victory over Penn Manor and a 34-27 loss to Solanco on the 22nd. In between those two dual

Those three season opening wins started with a 76-65 win over Bermudian Springs on December 10th with the Buckskins capturing their tourney title courtesy of a 7674 victory over Warwick one day later. The three-game run ended on the 14th with a 6857 win over Cocalico. A 62-52 loss to Elizabethtown followed on the 17th as did an 86-41 blitzkrieg from Lampeter-Strasburg on the 20th. The second half of the fourgame slide was a 53-38 loss to Warwick on December 21st and a 60-48 setback to Manheim Central on the 29th. The Lady Buckskins have managed to work their way to a 4-3 mark after seven games, doing so with a slow and steady approach, never too high, never too low. That approach was forged out of necessity with CV posting just one back-to-back set of wins, topping William Allen, 65-34, in the consolation game of the Fleetwood Tip-Off on December 11th followed by a 50-29 win over Cocalico on the 14th. The Lady Buckskins packed a 47-40 loss to Fleetwood on the 10th and a 44-30 loss to Elizabethtown on the 17th around that two-game run. CV got back on track with a 52-36 win over LampeterStrasburg on the 20th only to suffer a 43-42 heartbreaker to Warwick on day later. Conestoga Valley did enjoy a win in their abbreviated Solanco Holiday Tournament, topping the host Golden Mares by a 55-40 final on the 29th.

LMS Chooses Interim Superintendent
Fairmount from pg 1 By Dec. 13, Keim weighed nearly 700 pounds of food to be delivered to two area food pantries. This year’s donations went to the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank, located in Terre Hill, and to Hello Charity, a food pantry in Denver. Seibert noted that the lobby location serves the col-
With the departure of superintendent Pam Tieszen from Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), the LMS board has announced that Elaine Moyer will be interim superintendent, effective Tuesday, Jan. 18. Moyer previously spent 11 years as executive associate director of Mennonite Education Agency and, prior to that, 20 years as chief school administrator at Christopher Dock High School, a Mennonite school in Lansdale. She has also worked as an administrator, professor and teacher in elementary, high school, and college settings. Moyer will be with LMS on a twothirds-time basis, or two to three days per week in person, and she will be a facilitator and resource to the administrative team throughout this semester. CFO Lorri Hengst will serve as the
lection well because visitors to the area see the food piling up on tables and then want to take part. “Employees and residents are really giving,” said Keim. “It’s an easy place to hold a food drive.” More information about the mission of Fairmount may be found at https://fairmounthomes.org.

interim administrative team lead during this transition. Hengst and Moyer will collaborate to share the workload and respond to questions from internal and external stakeholders. The LMS board is bringing together a search committee and anticipates posting the superintendent position by the end of January. LMS has also provided an update on its sustainability initiative and unification project. The school has avoided drawing funds from its unrestricted endowment for the past two years, allowing the endowment to grow to $10.8 million. The school plans to add the $5.9 million in proceeds from the sale of the Locust Grove campus to the endowment and strengthen sustainability, although the funds currently allow the school to proceed with reno-
vations and preparations for unification. The board, administration, and Lead Gifts Task Force are working to invite lead gifts from friends of the school to lay the foundation of the Capital Campaign toward the costs of renovations and upgrades. LMS plans to unify its campuses in the fall as part of a strategic plan to ensure that the school is positioned to provide excellence in education today and for the future. Preparation for the unification will include new play-
ground equipment, classroom renovations, new classroom furniture, and resurfacing of the turf field. The board is committed to making decisions that fulfill the school’s mission to provide education in a diverse community that nurtures students to become creative and innovative learners who are prepared for college, career, and life. Bowmansville Mennonite Church (BMC), 129 Pleasant Valley Road, East Earl, will celebrate 100 years of worship in its current meetinghouse on Saturday, Jan. 15, and Sunday, Jan. 16. Snow dates are Saturday, Jan. 22, and Sunday, Jan. 23. Mennonite settlers came to the area that is now known as Bowmansville in 1738. After meeting in homes, the Mennonites constructed a building intended specifically as a house of worship in 1794, but by 1875 a larger building was needed. Land was purchased about a mile south of town where a new meetinghouse was built, and a cemetery was laid out. By 1921, that meetinghouse no longer met the needs of the growing congregation, and it was torn down and replaced with a larger frame building that is still in use today. At 3 p.m. each Saturday, a meeting titled “Cemeteries, Stories, and Supper” will begin the celebration. J. Carl Sensenig, local author and retired church leader, will share stories of God’s faithfulness in the lives of persons who are buried in the church’s cemetery. A light supper will be served where attendees will be able to continue reminiscing and sharing memories. Each Sunday, a worship service will begin at 9 a.m. Kenneth Sensenig, historian and storyteller, will share stories about the 1922 era and the local Mennonite church in a talk titled “Chance and Change Are Busy Ever.” Retired pastor Eugene Zimmerman will speak at 10 a.m. on “What We Can Learn From the Past That Will Affirm and Encourage for the Future - Isaiah 40.” Everyone is invited to enjoy lunch and more fellowship following the service on Sunday. Pictures and other items which have historical significance for BMC will be on display. For more details, call the church at 717-445-4449.
