Manheim Township Rec. Introduces Homeschool Phys. Ed. BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Michael Kurland graduated from the University of Tennessee, he headed to Jacksonville, Fla., with an idea. “I realized there was a large homeschool contingency down there,” said Kurland. “I started a homeschool PE (physical education) program.” In 2003, Kurland began teaching a curriculum he designed, attracting 400 students

the first year, and eventually doubling the size of the program. Later, Kurland took the concept to a more urban setting in Maryland, where hundreds of students took part, some driving up to an hour for a class. A year ago, Kurland came to the Lancaster area where he took the position of youth sports and activities manager with the Manheim Township Recreation Department. His background came to the attention of his supervisor Matt Stopa, and the result is a homeschool gym See Manheim Twp. Rec. pg 2

Katie Seibert (left) and Holly Keim organized a food drive at Fairmount that brought in nearly 2,500 pounds of food.

Fairmount Holds First Food Drive year ago, friends and co-workers Holly Keim, an LPN serving at Valley View at Fairmount, and Katie Seibert, an RN working in the rehabilitation facility at Fairmount, put their heads together. The pair was considering organizing a food drive that would give employees and residents an opportunity to donate to area food pantries. “We talked about it at the beginning of 2020,” recalled Keim, “but when COVID-19 (restrictions) happened, we put it on hold.” Keim explained that during the lockdown, the pair did not want to encourage anyone to go out unnecessarily. “At the beginning of the shutdown, everyone was freaking out about toilet paper and stores had limits on how much you could buy. We didn’t think that would be a proper time (to hold a drive).”

Bank, which is located in Terre Hill. The food was delivered to the food pantries on Nov. 24. The first floor triumphed by donating the most items to win the pizza party. Seibert said that she and Keim felt it was especially important to hold the drive at this time. “We have been blessed to continue to have jobs at Fairmount throughout all this,” she said. “A lot of people have been struggling because of COVID.” She and Keim were so pleased with the response, they hope to make the drive an annual event. “We would like to increase it next year,” said Seibert. “Around the holidays, people want to give, and for people who can’t afford to have (food for) Thanksgiving and Christmas this gives them the help that they need.” More information about Fairmount may be found at www.fairmounthomes.org.

Petrosky Earns Eagle Scout Award When Nolen Petrosky of Boy Scout Troop 99, which meets at Highland Presbyterian Church in Manheim Township, received his Eagle Scout Award at a Court of Honor on Nov. 28, 2020, he was appreciative. “I was grateful to have a ceremony,” said Petrosky, who had his immediate family, a speaker, and two members of the Scouting organization present at the event. “That was enough for me,” he said.

Seibert noted that instead, the friends waited until September and then went to Fairmount president/CEO Jerry Lile for permission to set up the drive. With Lile’s blessing, a competition was set up between the first floor, second floor, and administration. The group that brought in the most items would receive a pizza party. A table was set up in the vestibule of the Wheat Ridge building to allow residents in cottages and at Crest View to donate. Food items that were requested ranged from oatmeal to canned meats to condiments. Personal care items such as laundry detergent and, yes, toilet paper were also on the list. By Nov. 23, nearly 2,500 pounds of food had been donated. Items were divided between the food pantry at Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food

Manheim Twp. Rec. from pg 1 Student-Athletes Announce College Choices social growth, Kurland has designed the curriculum to include teamwork and building individual self-esteem. “Parents receive progress reports after each session,” said Kurland, adding that the course makes it easy for students who are at middle and high school levels to show they have obtained all their physical education credits. Kurland, who holds a degree in sports management, will be the sole teacher during the first year. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, classes will be limited to 10 students to provide for social distancing. In the future, class sizes may range up to 20 students. Other safety measures will include taking temperatures, wearing masks and gloves, handwashing, and sanitizing class areas between classes. There is a fee to take part in each session. If a homeschool coop group wants to keep certain students together, Kurland is open to creating a class for that group. He also said the possibility of including students who are taking part in virtual schooling exists. Readers who would like to register children for the classes may visit www.manheimtownship.org/253 /recreation-and-park-planning or call 717-290-7180.

Petrosky, who lives in the School District of Lancaster, joined the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub Scout at the age of 6. Now 18, Petrosky was cyberschooled and then homeschooled before completing his high school education as a member of the Class of 2020. Petrosky became a Life Scout at age 14, after which he began earnestly working to complete his Eagle Scout requirements. For his Eagle Scout project, Petrosky connected with Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum to fix a stone wall and a fence. However, as work began on that project, foundational issues made it unsuitable, and a similar project on the grounds was chosen. “There was a different area (at the museum) where there were three sections of fencing that I took out, built new fencing, and then installed,” said Petrosky, who noted that he led a team of other Scouts in completing the work. “It’s all about organization and leadership,” he said. “The project is a leadership project as well as a community service project,” he explained, noting that planning and communication skills were key in accomplishing the task, which began in the winter of 2018 and was completed in May of 2019. Petrosky selected Reji Woods to speak at his Court of Honor. The two know each other through Petrosky’s interest in theater. “Reji taught an acting class (I attended) at the Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts,” said Petrosky, who noted that Woods later became his voice coach and worked with him on productions at Creative Pursuits Studios. He also directed Petrosky when he took part in the Cavod Theatre production of “The Pirates of Penzance.” Currently, Petrosky is working, saving money, and looking to the future, which he notes has been thrown a little off course by COVID19 restrictions. He is interested in joining Youth With A Mission (YWAM), planning to become more involved with the missionary organization in the spring of 2021.

Holding a safe but in-person event was a top goal for Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV) and now race director for the GSV Half Marathon and 10K scheduled for Saturday, March 27, beginning at 8 a.m. at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “As a runner, I really want people to have the opportunity to run,” shared Cuthie, who noted that race volunteers, most of whom are GSV residents, have been open to safe ways they can help out so the event can be held. The 2020 race was held in a virtual format. Former race director Scott Miller, chief marketing director at GSV, began working with Cuthie over than a year ago to prepare her to take over the race, which has been a tradition in the area for more than a decade. “I spent time … observing everything (Miller) and staff members were doing so I was familiar,” recalled Cuthie, who said when it was time to start planning the 2021 event, Miller asked if she was ready to take over. Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role. To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist to discuss how problems would be mitigated in certain areas. A variety of changes will be implemented, including packet pickup with little or no contact; a “to-go” style dinner the night before the race; a wave start, which sends racers out at intervals, on race day; and a finisher’s zone Cuthie is calling “Accomplishment Alley,” where pickup of medals and food will be

streamlined. All awards will be mailed. A virtual option will be offered for those who choose that method of completing the run. As it has in the past, the race will begin and end on the GSV campus, following the same route that was instituted in 2019, when the race went from being a full marathon and a half marathon to a half marathon and a 10K. “On campus, we will follow whatever the state Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race),” said Cuthie, who noted that everyone at GSV must wear a mask, including runners who may remove their masks at the start and put them back on at the finish. Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are no restrictions on large events,” said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final decision before Monday,

March 1. “We hope to do (the best) we can for the runners, but we’re a retirement community, so we have more to think about than having a race,” she added. Cuthie, a resident of Mount Gretna, is well-known in New Holland as the originator of the Hometown Heroes banner program and for her work with Visions. Readers who would like more information about the GSV race may visit https://gsv.run. Individuals with questions may call 717-355-6000.

Troop J Holds First “Shop With A Cop” Christmas Tree Disposal BY ANN MEAD ASH

Officer Kelly Osborne, community service/public information officer with Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster and the organizer of the first Shop With a Cop event held on Dec. 5 at Lafayette Fire Company, was overwhelmed at the response she received when she began planning the program in early fall. “I have been amazed at the outpouring and generosity of people for this program,” said Osborne, who hopes to expand the event into other areas of the county in the Monica (left) was partfuture. nered with Officer The program involved 15 preHeather Waltman (right) selected students meeting with 15 for her Shop With a Cop volunteer State Police officers and experience on Dec. 5. a few police from local districts at the fire station at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 5. Osborne had paired up the elementary-age children with the officers. Each child was given a $150 gift card to Kohl’s, and the students and officers were bused to the businesss’s Lincoln Highway store so students could shop for family members. Armed with lists of possible gifts, the students and officers shopped and then returned to the station, where the officers helped wrap the gifts. Each student left with a bagged lunch when a parent picked him or her up at 12:30 p.m. Troop J - Lancaster, located at Lt. The two Troop J - Lancaster.

school districts that are full time for the officers are Pequea Valley and Solanco. Osborne gave priority to those areas when organizing the event, accepting nominations from pastors, school counselors, and other members of the community for children living in the greater Paradise area and the Southern End. She initially hoped to include 30 children, but COVID19 restrictions forced her to scale back to 15. “I am giving the opportunity to kids who would benefit from positive law enforcement interaction,” Osborne said, noting that students who had been the victim of a crime or other difficult circumstances were given priority. Osborne worked with Camp Cadet, which is connected to Troop J, where she has been involved since 2006. “Camp Cadet has existed since 1971,” said Osborne, who said that the 501(c)(3) is run by a civilian board of directors. To fund the program, Osborne sold “Shop With a Cop” yard signs, and she found donors plentiful. “We raised money to help fund it for the next few years going forward,” she said. Before the event, Osborne was looking forward to giving the children a special experience. “All the families whose children were accepted were ecstatic,” she said. Following the program, the “Troop J Lancaster Shop With a Cop” Facebook page had garnered positive comments and expressions of gratitude. The mother of a young man named Sebastian who took part wrote, “Thanks to everyone for their kindness and this positively amazing experience.”

Program Posted County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Sunday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John

Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is

ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, firstserved basis after Jan. 6, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County park system, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

John and Mable Hershey celebrated their 60th anniversary on Oct. 23 with their family. They are longtime residents of the home John grew up in outside of Maytown. They were married at Mount Joy Mennonite Church by the Rev. Henry Frank on Oct. 23, 1960. They are the parents of Brent Hershey, husband of Lisa, Mount Joy; Brenda Moran, wife of Patrick, Mount Joy; and Beth Baker, wife of Jerry, Mount Joy. They are the grandparents of nine grandchildren: Michael Moran, husband of Maci; Austin Moran, husband of Addie; Patrick Moran, husband of Brooke; Colleen, Nicholas, and Faith Hershey; and Derrick, Cole, and Brett Baker. They also have seven great-grandchildren. Hospitality has always been a gift of John and Mable, and they have opened their home to host many socials. They have hosted exchange students from Denmark,

Germany, and Africa, becoming parents to them during their stay. John and Mable thank God for a solid family heritage and strong faith, which they say have contributed to their 60 years of marriage. John and Mable have retired from farming at their Marietta farm. During retirement, they remain busy blessing their family and many folks in their church and community. They have enjoyed traveling to many states and countries, golfing, and playing card games with their many friends.
