GSV Half/10K Introduces New Race Director Allison Cuthie Will Take Over 2021 Event BY ANN MEAD ASH

olding a safe but in-person event was a top goal for Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV) and now race director for the GSV Half Marathon and 10K scheduled for Saturday, March 27, beginning at 8 a.m. at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “As a runner, I really want people to have the opportunity to run,” shared Cuthie, who noted that race volunteers, most of whom are GSV residents, have been open to safe ways they can help out so the event can be held. The 2020 race was held in a virtual format. Former race director Scott Miller, chief marketing director at GSV, began working with Cuthie more than a year ago to prepare her to take over the race, which has been a tradition in the area for more than a decade. “I spent time … observing everything (Miller) and staff members were doing so I was familiar,” recalled Cuthie, who said when it

H

was time to start planning the 2021 event, Miller asked if she was ready to take over. Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role. To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist to discuss how problems would be mitigated in certain areas. A variety of changes will be implemented, including packet pickup with little or no contact; a “to-go” style dinner the night before the race; a wave start, which sends racers out at intervals, on race day; and a finisher’s zone Cuthie is calling “Accomplishment Alley,” where pickup of medals and food will be streamlined. All awards will be mailed. A virtual option will be offered for those who choose that method of completing the run. As it has in the past, the race will begin and end on the GSV campus, following the same route that was instituted in 2019, when the race went from being a full marathon and a half marathon to a half marathon and a 10K. “On campus,

we will follow whatever the state Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race),” said Cuthie, who noted that everyone at GSV must wear a mask, including runners who may remove their masks at the start and put them back on at the finish. Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are no restrictions on large events,” said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final decision before Monday, March 1. “We hope to do (the best) we can for the runners, but we’re a retirement community, so we have more to think about than having a race,” she added. Cuthie, a resident of Mount Gretna, is well-known in New Holland as the originator of the Hometown Heroes banner program and for her work with Visions. Readers who would like more information about the GSV race may visit https://gsv.run. Individuals with questions may call 717-355-6000.

Runner Allison Cuthie will take over the helm of the Garden Spot Village Half Marathon and 10K for 2021.

In Proverbs 31, the writer describes a woman of noble character. To many women studying the text, the characteristics of this woman may seem daunting. “A lot of women who read Proverbs 31 … walk away with a list of things to do,” said Lancaster County resident Mari Hernandez-Tuten, author of “Proverbs 31 in 5 Minutes a Day Bible Study,” which was released in early September. Steve Schedler, who officially became executive director of the Samaritan Counseling Center on Sept. 8, is impressed with the staff he has joined. “One of the amazing things about Samaritan Center is our amazing team,” he said, noting that many of the dedicated staff members have been there for more than a decade and at least one for 25 years. “It’s great to be part of something that people have put a lot of passion and energy into for many years.” Schedler, who served the Naaman Center in Elizabeth-

town for 10 years, lastly as executive director, applied for the position last spring. “I had a great experience with the search committee, and when I was offered the position, I enthusiastically accepted,” said Schedler. Schedler, who lives in Hershey with his family, is no stranger to Lancaster County. He noted that in his work with the Naaman Center, he often drove to that center’s various locations. Food Bank from pg 1 Since March 2020, when the pandemic arrived in the local area, the food bank has seen its numbers steadily increase. “Last year in a typical month we served about 135,000 people through all of our partners. During COVID, a typical month is (serving) 200,000 people,” said Joe Arthur, executive director. “The vast majority of those folks that came for help last year was directly related to COVID - job loss, losing (work) hours

and the economic impact.” He noted that, with safety in mind, the food bank and its partners began distributing food in a drive-up format. Programs offered by the food bank include Military Share, which provides fresh food for families with at least one member who served or is serving in the armed forces, and the ElderShare program, which provides a monthly box of food to seniors who meet certain income

guidelines. Food bank volunteers also pack and distribute boxes for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) monthly Commodity Supplemental Food Program for low-income seniors. Arthur said that the food bank and its programs were able to thrive with additional assistance. “We have had extra help from the big federal programs that came down, like the CARES Act, and there was extra funding and food that came from the USDA and our state Department of Agriculture,” he noted. From the start of the pandemic, the food bank began to prepare for a long-term crisis. “Back in March, we knew it would be big, and we started sending out (donation) letters and we received immediate response,” Arthur stated. “Our appeals for extra help have (resulted in) a lot of generosity. It has been inspiring - the response we have received from people, foundations and businesses that are doing OK.” The community is invited to continue to help the food bank through

donations or by volunteering to help sort and pack food. Since in-person food drives are currently suspended, people may take part in a virtual food drive by visiting www.central pafoodbank.org/ways-to-give/give -funds/virtual-food-drive. Arthur said that area residents should also support their local food banks in the next few months, when the need is especially strong. “We call it the ‘heat or eat’ season when people decide whether to buy food or pay their heating bill,” he added. Lady Bucks Win Season Opener Against Lebanon

by Leah Sintic

Despite missing a few players from their lineup, the Lady Bucks proved they were more than ready to take the court when their season finally got underway on Friday, January 8, hosting a dynamic, season opening win over the Lebanon Cedars, 77-65. “I’m pleased with the effort and play the first game,” praised head coach Bill Moore. “The players have been working hard and it was nice to see their hard work payoff.” The Buckskins delivered their

attack from all angles, with four CV athletes notching double digits and a total of eight athletes contributing to the scoreboard. Junior, Taylor Hehnly led CV’s scoring surge with 15, complimented by an additional 13 from sophomore Rebecca Hartranft, who’s efforts also included a flawless fourof-four showing at the line. Hartranft wasn’t the only Buckskin player with free throw success, a pivotal aspect to the 12-point victory. The Lady Bucks made the most of their 24 collective trips to the line, netting a staggering 17 uncontested points, and earning a free throw percentage of just over 70 percent. Alexis Goldsborough and Camdyn Mahler rounded out CV’s offensive surge, chipping in 10 points apiece to keep the Lebanon defenders scrambling. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Making up for lost time, CV boys packed three games into four days’ time to open their season, garnering a pair of wins during the threegame stretch on the road. Opening night, January 8th, held a heartbreaking one-point loss, 5857, at Lebanon. The back-and-forth battle featured multiple lead changes with the Bucks clinging to a 43-42 advantage entering the final quarter, but the Cedars captured the final period, 16-14, barely pulling ahead for the one-point win. “We played extremely tough on the defensive end of the floor and our full court press caused some

havoc and created turnovers,” noted head coach Jim Shipper. “Offensively, we struggled down the stretch.” Austin Wertz and Cameron Swinton each netted a dozen Buckskin points, with Luke Rumbaugh knocking down 11. Free throw percentage was nearly identical for both teams, with CV shooting just over 56 percent (9-of16) and Lebanon just under at 55 percent. But the vast number of Lebanon’s trips to the line (19-of34) paid off for the Cedars. CV bounced back just 24 hours later with a one-point victory of their own, topping Eastern York, 6463, in a nonleague showdown January 9th. Rumbaugh was CV’s high scorer in the Saturday night conquest, netting 21, including four 3-pointers. Swinton supplemented the attack with 18, and Wertz added 10. “We got some clutch shooting throughout the game, and I felt our offense was fueled from our defensive intensity,” credited Shipper. “We took care of the ball, ran some good sets, and our shot selection was 100 percent better than Friday night, which in turn helped us get the road win.”

Capping the string of away games was a Monday night triumph over William Penn, 76-66, with Rumbaugh again paving the way on offense, registering 20. Some fresh names were highlighted on the scoreboard with Cooper McCloud contributing 14, Wertz 13, and Gabe Matos 12. Rumbaugh and McCloud extended the York defense with the threepoint threat, netting three treys apiece, and Matos went 5-of-7 at the line. SWIMMING The CV girls’ swimmers made quite a splash in their 95-58 triumph over Cocalico to jump start their season on Tuesday, January 12th. Once the water settled, the Lady Bucks had achieved top times in seven of the individual events as well as claiming two of the three relays. Veteran Karli Raasch claimed the butterfly (1:01.66) and the 200 IM (2:16.36). Fellow senior Ashley Nolt touched first in both the 50 free (29.71) and 100 free (1:08.72), and junior Jordan Holmes also won two events with a 2:18.65 in the 200 free and 1:06.96 in the backstroke while distance swimmer Kyla Pham posted a 6:58.01 to win the 500 free. In relay action, Holmes, Pham, and Raasch were joined by Hollyn Helsel to claim the 200 medley, and Pham, Raasch, Nolt, and Holmes got the job done in the 400 free with a 4:17.3. For the boys, the night ended in a narrow 77-71 loss, featuring five individual victories and one relay win for CV. WRESTLING Also getting league head-tohead matches underway on January 12th, Buckskin wrestling experienced a tough 55-12 loss to Hempfield, leaving them eager to get back on the mat for their next dual. While the evening heavily favored the Knights, CV junior Trent Ruble, last season’s Section champion at 106, proved to be a highlight and provided the Bucks with a fall in his bout. Hernandez-Tuten wanted to give women a different perspective on the virtues of the Proverbs 31 woman. “This woman (in Proverbs 31) is doing all these things, but I don’t think it’s just a day in her life. I think these are seasons throughout her life,” noted Hernandez-Tuten. “You see her being productive, and you see her trusting God in the midst of all sorts of situations.” One goal of the book was to show women that they can make significant contributions. “This whole theme of having influence as women no matter where we are is ... a theme I want to share with other women,”

said Hernandez-Tuten. With that focus in mind, Hernandez-Tuten pictured her reader as serious but busy. “I think of this Bible study as something for women who have been doing devotionals and want to go a little deeper but aren’t ready to sit down for one or two hours,” said Hernandez-Tuten, who worked with her editor to offer readers studies that can be done in a short amount of time. The study is set up to be completed in seven weeks when the reader finishes a segment each day. Hernandez-Tuten noted that the study offers variety. “Some days are short devotions with a question and

sometimes an activity,” she said. There is an “Act” section that encourages the reader to “put into action what (she) just learned.” The study can be done individually or in groups. With more than 20 years of experience in ministry, Hernandez-Tuten had considered writing a book later on in her life. When she was contacted by a publisher at the end of 2019, she decided to accept the opportunity as a gift from God. Her feelings about the opportunity did not change, but her circumstances soon did. “I had signed a contract and was moving forward when COVID hit,” Hernandez-Tuten recalled. “I was not expecting to be writing during a pandemic with (all my family) in my house.” Calling the experience “the opposite of anything I had ever imagined,” Hernandez-Tuten set about writing with three school-age sons attending school virtually and her husband teaching school virtually. “The concentration part was really hard,” she remembered. Eventually, she asked her husband to take the boys on a brief camping trip so she could have the solitude she needed to meet her deadlines, and she completed the book in about four months. About a month after the book was published, Hernandez-Tuten’s father died. To honor her father’s legacy, Hernandez-Tuten held a “Buy a Book, Donate a Book!” event on Nov. 9 at The Mustard Seed Boutique in Lititz. For

8 - PENNYSAVER - Conestoga Valley Edition - January 20, 2021

Fairmount Holds First Food Drive A year ago, friends and coworkers Holly Keim, an LPN serving at Valley View at Fairmount, and Katie Seibert, an RN working in the rehabilitation facility at Fairmount, put their heads together. The pair was considering organizing a food drive that would give employees and residents an opportunity to donate to area food pantries. “We talked about it at the beginning of 2020,” recalled Keim, “but when COVID-19 (restrictions) happened, we put it on hold.” Keim explained that during the lockdown, the pair did not want to encourage anyone to

go out unnecessarily. “At the beginning of the shutdown, everyone was freaking out about toilet paper and stores had limits on how much you could buy. We didn’t think that would be a proper time (to hold a drive).” Seibert noted that instead, the friends waited until September and then went to Fairmount president/CEO Jerry Lile for permission to set up the drive. With Lile’s blessing, a competition was set up between the first floor, second floor, and administration. The group that brought in the most items would receive a pizza party. A table was set up in the vestibule of the Wheat Ridge building to allow resi-

dents in cottages and at Crest View to donate. Food items that were requested ranged from oatmeal to canned meats to condiments. Personal care items such as laundry detergent and, yes, toilet paper were also on the list. By Nov. 23, nearly 2,500 pounds of food had been donated. Items were divided between the food pantry at Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank, which is located in Terre Hill. The food was delivered to the food pantries on Nov. 24. The first floor triumphed by donating the most items to win the pizza party. Seibert said that she and

Keim felt it was especially important to hold the drive at this time. “ We have been blessed to continue to have jobs at Fairmount throughout all this,” she said. “A lot of people have been struggling because of COVID.” She and Keim were so pleased with the response, they hope to make the drive an annual event. “We would like to increase it next year,” said Seibert. “Around the holidays, people want to give, and for people who can’t afford to have (food for) Thanksgiving and Christmas this gives them the help that they need.” More information about Fairmount may be found at www.fairmounthomes.org.
