Preparing For Success
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“We have openings for the summer preschool as well as next fall,” said Michelle Harbaugh, director of Steps to Success, a Christian preschool and day care service located in Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. “We can accommodate 28 students.”
Enrollment is open now for 3- and 4year-olds. Harbaugh explained that the preschool has immediate openings for children born prior to Sept. 1, 2018, as well as openings for children born prior to Sept. 1, 2019.
According to Harbaugh, the preschool curriculum follows the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) requirements to prepare children for kindergarten. Students from all districts are welcome at the center. “We (cover) all
the pre-milestones to get them ready for their kindergarten screening,” said Harbaugh, who noted introduction to letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and other basics is included. “(The district) likes them to know their address,” she stated.
In addition to preschool enrollment, Harbaugh announced that Steps to Success is also enrolling students in the center’s schoolage summer camp, which will be held at Smoketown Elementary School this year. “We have about 40 students enrolled in camp already,” she said.
To enroll a student in preschool or camp, a parent may visit www.stepstosuccessinc.com and click on the “Parents” tab, followed by the “Enrollment” tab. Once an online enrollment inquiry is completed, a member of the Steps to Success administrative team will make contact.

Participants at Challenger Clubsmonthly Bible studies for individuals age 15 and up with physical or intellectual disabilities - do not always express their enjoyment of the experience verbally. “A grandmother told me recently that her grandson, who (shows little emotion) around his family, is so excited to attend,” said Meghan Martin, disability ministries assistant, HandiVangelism Ministries International (HVMI), which oversees the clubs.
“There are so many smiles.”

Looking back on a Winter Field Day event, Ralph Hess, president of Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), recalled a story about a gentleman, a newcomer to the hobby, who helped him set up antennas for amateur, ham for short, radio operation. “We got the antenna hooked to the radio, and I threw out my call sign and a (ham) got back to me from Poland,” said Hess, who added that the gentleman was astounded. “He said, ‘That piece of wire I just touched let you talk to Poland?’”
Hess relayed. Hess used an internet program to confirm the contact.

The 2023 event, presented by a partnership between RRR and the Winter Field Day Association, will be held at the Welsh Mountain Community Center and Park, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The group will begin to set up antennas at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, and the event will officially begin at 2 p.m. Winter Field Day will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. The event is held for 24 hours to include radio operators from all time zones.
Newly licensed and inexperienced operators as well as those with an interest in the hobby are encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate, and visitors are welcome to drop in anytime and bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight in the center.
Several seminars will be offered during the event. At 10 a.m. on Jan. 28, Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) will give a presentation. Hess noted that the organization practices emergency drills for the closed Three Mile Island and the functioning Peach Bottom
nuclear power plants because ham radios continue to operate when cellphones cannot and in areas where cell services may be limited.
Additional workshops will instruct attendees in how to build three types of twometer antennas and one HF (high frequency) antenna. There is a nominal fee to build antennas to cover the costs of materials.
Presently, there are 50 licensed ham radio operators in the New Holland ZIP code and more than 1,500 in the county. Hess believes a chance to converse internationally attracts many to the hobby. “We will be operating under our club call sign, so … anybody can come up and operate,” he said. “I can almost guarantee we will find someone outside the U.S. to talk to.” Hess noted that many visitors react positively to hearing a voice from another country over the radio. “People’s faces just light up,” he said.

Swimmers
BY ERIC PYLES
The Conestoga Valley boy’s swimming team has been making a splash with an 85-82 win over Cocalico on the 10th and a 96-64 victory over LampeterStrasburg on the 11th offsetting a 111-56 loss to Elizabethtown on the 16th. Daniel Ivanchikov, Connor Ludwig and Rome Lucchese account for all 11 solo wins over that stretch with Ivanchikov accounting for six on his own.
The trio, along with Aidan Campbell, Ashton Reese and Isaiah Dentel have also accounted for four relay wins, including a relay sweep in the win over Lampeter-Strasburg.
The Lady Buckskins have not been able to generate the same level of splash with losses to Cocalico (120-39), Lampeter-Strasburg (110-43) and Elizabethtown (130-33) dropping CV to 0-6 on the year.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
‘New year, new you’ is a popular phrase used this time of year but often has little meaning in the world of basketball, but that is not the case for the Conestoga Valley boys’ team.
The Buckskins closed out 2022 with a 4-4 mark and dropped to 4-6 in the initial days of 2023 with two quick losses but have turned things around
with four straight wins, pushing their record to 8-6.
Three of those four wins came with a double-digit margin starting with the 51-40 triumph over Elizabethtown on the 13th. Griffen Rishell led the way with 16 points while Owen Fisher added 12 points, helping the ‘Bucks hold the scoring edge in three of the four frames.
One day later CV hit the road to take on Manheim Township and used a 10-0 run through the overtime period to come home with a 65-55 victory. Township nearly stole the win with a strong fourth quarter, but CV was able to regroup using the OT shutout to collect the win. Rishell netted 24 points while Fisher added 10. Tanner Petersheim made it three in double figures with his 15-point effort.
Conestoga Valley stretched the winning streak to four games with a 51-35 romp over Garden Spot on the 17th. The Buckskins started slowly, holding just a five-point, 2318, lead at the break. A 28-17 run through the second half pushed the final margin to 16-points. Petersheim netted 12 points while Rishell posted a team-high 17.
The winning streak started back on the 10th when CV
Cocalico, LS Before Loss to ET
slipped by Ephrata 52-50. The Mountaineers controlled the first half, taking a 23-17 lead into the break but CV managed a 35-27 edge in the second half to secure the victory. Rishell was held in check leaving Fisher’s 15 points as team high. Nasziir Anderson picked up some slack to collect 11 points.
That two-point win over Ephrata was a bounce back game thanks to Warwick handing out a 62-41 loss on January 6th. Rishell finished with 19 points, but Warwick held the scoring edge in three of the four frames to collect the win.
AIR RIFLE
Over on the rifle range the Buckskins have faltered with losses to Manheim Central, Elizabethtown, Garden Spot and Manheim Township dropping CV’s record to 1-7. The first pair of those losses saw CV fall just short with Central posting a 491-488 win on the 5th and E-town claiming a 588-586 victory on the 10th. Garden Spot collected a more comfortable win with their 494-489 final on the 12th while Township breezed to a 496-486 win on the 17th.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Two wins does not officially qualify as a winning streak to most, but they still feel nice. Especially when they move
your overall record from 2-11 to 4-11, as is the case for the Conestoga Valley girls’ basketball team.
Of course, before getting to those two victories the Lady Buckskins suffered losses to Wa rwick, and Ephrata by a combined 28 points. The bulk of that came from the 43-16 setback to Ephrata on the 10th where CV was held to single digits in all four quarters. That left Erin Figart and her six points as team high.
The loss to Warwick went down on the 6th with the Lady Warriors needing double overtime to steal a 45-44 win. CV needed a 14-6 run though the fourth to force extra time and stayed with Warwick through one extra session but could not keep up in the second OT frame. Rhiannon Henry collected 21 points in the loss.
The Lady Buckskins got back to winning on the 13th, rolling by Elizabethtown 3920. Eight different players cracked the box score, led by Henry and her 11 points.
Conestoga Valley followed with another double-digit win on the 17th, this one by a 54-40 final over Garden Spot. Henry led a trio of double-digit scorers with 12 points, helping CV to a scoring edge in three of the four frames. Ashley Cirilo and
Megan Fliegel rounded out that trio with matching 10-point games.
BOWLING
The new year has been a boon for the bowling team with wins over Penn Manor, Lebanon and Warwick moving CV to 24-32 overall. The Penn Manor and Warwick victories were nerve-racking kind, each ending with the Buckskins up 4-3. The going was a lot easier on the 10th where CV posted their first 7-0 win of the season over Lebanon.
WRESTLING
The wrestling team kept busy recently by taking part in the Hamburg Duals on the 7th while also hosting Hempfield
on the 11th. Conestoga Valley f ound themselves on the wrong end of a 40-27 final in that Hempfield match after dropping eight of the 13 weight classes. Andrew Stoltzfoos (152), Abdoul Akala (172) and Nick Horton (107) all earned pinfall wins while Luke Needham (160) enjoyed an injury default win. Zander Rider (215) collected the lone decision for CV.
Conestoga Valley went 4-1 in their time at Hamburg with wins over Bensalem (56-15), Tamaqua (59-12), LampeterStrasburg (53-15) and Dallastown (37-28) coupled with a 65-6 loss to Faith Christian Academy.

HVMI has run Challenger Clubs at several Ephrata-area churches, including New Joy and Highpoint, along with the HVMI offices at 300 W. Chestnut St., Ephrata, and private residences, for several years. Now, the organization has expanded to the area south of Route 30 with a new club, which began serving residents of the greater Paradise area in October 2022. The Challenger Club at Calvary Monument Bible Church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The club will continue to meet through April.
Martin said each club meeting begins with worship, followed by a Bible lesson and often a skit to enhance understanding of the lesson, and a memory verse. During small group time, participants work on a booklet, which can be taken home at the end of the year, focused on life application of the lesson. Martin shared that the lessons are structured to be more palatable to participants. “We write our own curriculum, and we are able to write in a way that we know has been successful in the past,” she said. “Parents can see the growth in their kids when they see them understanding and answering questions. It’s a different aspect that parents don’t always see.” Martin noted that parents may drop their children at the club or they are welcome to stay. “The respite piece is something we like to offer,” she pointed out.
According to Martin, volunteers are needed to work with HVMI staff aiding participants at each meeting. “(Volunteers) may help with small group time or take part in the skit,” she said.
The Bible clubs are an extension of HVMI’s summer program, which provides uniquely designed camping experiences for individuals with disabilities. “A lot of places provide fun activities for adults with disabilities, but our goal is to focus on a Bible lesson,” explained Martin, who added that many participants enjoy the club so much
they cannot wait to return. “ We have a girl who just moved (to the Paradise area) with her family, and she has come to every meeting,” said Martin. “She was walking out the door after the last meeting, and she said to her mother, ‘What’s the date for the next one so I can put it on my calendar?’” reported Martin.
Readers who would like to learn more about HVMI may visit www.hvmi.org. Individuals who want to know more about volunteering or participation in a club may call 717-859-4777 or email mmartin@hvmi.org.

Blue Ridge Communications, Attn. Cindy Mellinger, 804 Academy Heights Ave., Ephrata, PA 17522.
Blue Ridge will accept valentines through Friday, Feb. 3. For more information about the initiative, visit www.brctv.com/heart or contact Mellinger at cmellinger @brctv.com or 717-733-6066, ext. 2551.

PeoplesBank Supports
YMCA
PeoplesBank recently donated $50,000 to the Y Community Development Corporation, which is part of the YMCA of the Roses’ community development work to lift up local neighborhoods through projects ranging from establishing affordable housing to improving public safety infrastructure.
PeoplesBank is a key partner of the Y Community Development Corporation and the YMCA, with this year being the fourth year of a five-year commitment in the state’s Neighborhood Assistance Program. Through the program, millions of dollars have gone toward improving the quality of life of thousands of individuals, youths and families.
The YMCA and its partners have transformed blighted properties into low-income housing; installed and maintained streetlights; implemented security
camera systems, which have been used to assist law enforcement; maintained the appearance of local neighborhoods through façade improvements; and been part of ongoing street sweeping efforts.
To learn more about the YMCA’s community development work, contact Joe Kirkenir at jkirkenir@rosesymca.org.
Established in November of 2021, the YMCA of the Roses is the result of a merger between the YMCA of York and York County and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Since 1854, the YMCA has been serving more than 60,000 people a year in the region through programs in the focus areas of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
More information about the YMCA can be found at www.rosesymca.org.
