he tale of Aria and Ducky began on a seashore boardwalk when Aria, who is now 7, was only 18 months old and she received a stuffed duck as an arcade prize. Aria, who lives in Manheim, often told her grandfather, André

write it down. “I said, ‘I am not a writer, I am a retired health care executive and industrial engineer,’” recalled André, sharing that his wife replied, “Just do it.” “So I did it,” said André, who shared his written version with friends and received praise for it. His sister, who is a teacher, proofread it for him, and with a clean copy, he decided to take the next step and find an illustrator. After researching illustrators online, André’s son, Chris, who is Aria’s father, suggested André reach out to one of his childhood friends, David Leonard. “I coached the kid in soccer,” André recalled of Leonard. “I looked at David’s website and fell in love with his work.” After working with Leonard for some time, André had the illustrated book in hand. He researched the world of publishing and opted to self-publish. “The Adventures of Aria and Ducky: The Surprise Birthday Party,” has been out since June of 2021. It is available at the Lancaster Barnes and Noble and on Amazon. See Creativity pg 4

Renna of Leola, of her adventures with her best friend Ducky and of the activities they had planned. One day, when Aria was about 5 1/2, André was pushing her on the swing at his house, and she began to tell him a story about the birthday party she was planning for Ducky. After each push, André had to wait for Aria to come back to hear the next detail about the party. “She would say, ‘Well, Ducky and I …’ and then, whoosh, she was gone away,” recalled André. In her story, Aria included many details, including the names of all her stuffed animals that were invited to the surprise birthday party and information about the cake, the fruit punch, the balloons, and a big banner. “She said, ‘You know what, Papa? Something happened at the party,’” said André, who reported that Aria’s pet cat, Jasmine, had somehow ruined the party. “But Ducky was OK,” Aria assured André, “because he knows we really love him.” Enchanted by the story, André told the tale to his wife, who suggested he

Kilgore praised helpers who have been part of the program the last two years. “The volunteers who have stuck with us through COVID have been really wonderful,” she said. “The kids have needed to talk more.” She pointed out that volunteering can be rewarding to those who take the opportunity to help guide young lives. “We want to be encouraging to kids and families right now,” she said. “It is a blessing to us to be able to do that.” Kilgore noted that she is grateful for God’s provision over the last few years. “Financially, God has been bringing support,” she said. “He has kept us going in better ways than we could have imagined.” Those who wish to sign a child up for a Good News Club may visit www.ceflancaster.org and click on the registration tab to find the elementary school where their child would attend. who attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. We try to connect them to that partner church,” she said. Good News Club meetings, which are held after school, involve a Bible lesson; a memory verse; songs; games; small group time, which is called Wonder Time; and missions. Each semester has its own theme. The spring 2022 series is called “The Early Church God’s Power in Action.” The program has a rotating sixyear curriculum. Volunteers are an integral part of the program. “We try to have one adult for every six children,” said Kilgore, who noted that volunteers are trained to use the curriculum.

Servants Inc., a ministry that provides home repairs, has opened an office in Lancaster County.

ton, the executive team had a vision of expanding into a number of counties, with Lancaster being the first. “Right now we are in York, Lancaster, and Adams,” explained Cotton, adding that Lebanon, Dauphin, and Cumberland are in line to get offices next. One of the initial connections Servants Inc. made was with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “In 2021, we completed five projects in New Holland with CrossNet,” said Cotton. Meredith Dahl, executive director at CrossNet, said the organization is grateful to partner with Servants Inc. “Recently, a handicapped-accessible porch was placed on the home of a family in our community,” she said. “The family shared with us … that they observed what it means to show love and care every time they interacted with the (Servants) staff. We are grateful for this part-

nership and opportunity to meet needs and show God’s love in ELANCO.” “Servants is unique because a lot of ministries do the camp model,” said Cotton. “We are a year-round model,” he noted, adding a full-time project manager was scheduled to begin working for the ministry in Lancaster County in January 2021, with Thursdays and Saturdays slated to be the primary workdays. Cotton noted that the organization is looking for local volunteers. Skills like roofing, plumbing, and carpentry are bonuses but not required. “We put an emphasis on building relationships,” Cotton explained. “You don’t have to be a professional carpenter to sit down and have a conversation. Anybody can serve.” Servants Inc. is already serving in most Lancaster County School districts where its services would not be duplicated.

The organization is actively at work in Columbia as well as New Holland, and representatives attended the Together Initiative Network (TIN) meeting at Pequea Valley Intermediate School on Nov. 17, 2021, for the purpose of introducing the organization to the local community. Servants Inc., still sends recovery teams to areas of the U.S. hit by disasters. On Jan. 2 and 9, Heartland Recovery trips left to help those areas recently devastated by tornadoes. Readers may learn more about the organization by visiting www.servants.org or calling 717-378-0336.

he called SARF (Serving At Risk Families), which also included home repair and construction work. Fast forward to 2005, when Hurricane Katrina inspired Davis to do home repair work stateside. “(Trent) responded with the same base of volunteers, and that’s how the disaster recovery branch started,” said Cotton, who noted that flooding in York County in 2010 really brought home the idea of working locally. “There are home repair needs here, and we have these skills,” said Cotton. “(Trent thought), ‘Let’s start working more regularly here in the community.’” Home Helps began serving in York in 2007. From York, the leap to Lancaster County was natural. Davis now works out of The Candy Factory building in downtown Lancaster several days a week. According to Cot-

that say, ‘This is me reading it to my granddaughter.’” One message said, “I read it again the other day to my 4-yearold, and he was sad when Ducky was sad.” “I thought (the book) might be something Aria could have for a long time,” said André, who noted that Aria’s school principal sat Aria beside her at the front of the classroom and read the book to the girl’s classmates. “That is priceless for a kid,” he said. André noted that the only downside of having written a book is the requests for a sequel. “Everyone wants us to write a second book,” he said, “but Aria has to come up with the story.” Readers who wish to learn more about the book may visit www.ariaandducky.com.

Two nights earlier the Lady Buckskins used 28 points from Taylor Hehnly to outlast McCaskey 69-68. CV used big second (17-7) and fourth (2614) quarter runs to pull out the one-point win. Laela Robinson added 13 points and Morgan Martin 11 to back Hehnly. On January 18th Hehnly was the lone Lady Buckskin to reach double figures, getting to exactly 10 in the 68-48 loss to Manheim Township. The Lady Streaks controlled all but the final frame where CV posted a 13-6 edge. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The boys’ basketball team sits at 5-7 after losses to McCaskey and Manheim Township coupled with a win over Lancaster Mennonite. Conestoga Valley found the defensive pressure against the Red Tornado too much, falling 52-33 on January 13th. CV’s 33 points were split between just five players with DeMajh Salisbery (12 points) and Cameron Swinton (11 points) the only double-digit scorers. The Buckskins rebounded on the 15th, nipping Lancaster Mennonite 76-74 thanks to matching 24-point efforts from Swinton and Salisbery. Griffin Rishell added 14 points and Titus York 12 points while Nasziir Anderson cleaned up the final two. Salisbery continued to score, netting 27, but it did not help as CV fell to Township by a 7568 final on the 18th. Rishell added 19 in support but a faulty fourth quarter saw Manheim post a 26-14 edge, flipping CV’s five-point cushion into a seven-point loss. WRESTLING In the case of the CV wrestling team, busy did not translate into sweeping success with the Buckskins falling to Cocalico and Warwick offsetting a win over Manheim Township last Wednesday. In both losses strong starts were undone with late fades leading to a 34-27 loss to Cocalico and a 33-32 loss to Warwick. On January 12th, CV earned all five of their wins in the first eight bouts but that 21-14 lead ended up as a loss with the Eagles winning the final five weights. Bryce Bowman (120), Luke Morley (126), Keaton Fisher (145), Luke Needham (152) and Nathaniel Kirchner (172) accounted for those five wins.

Nastia Ivanchikov posted times of 2:25.58 and 6:36.95 to finish first in the 200 and 500 freestyles and give the Conestoga Valley girls two of their four individual event wins in their 94-66, nonleague loss at McCaskey on January 13.

Rome Lucchese posted a double with a 1:06.01 win in the 100 Backstroke and a 1:09.93 win in the 100 butterfly to help the Buckskins to a 103-50, nonleague win over host McCaskey on January 13.

Things played out in a similar fashion in the Buckskins’ loss to Warwick on the 14th. This time CV took six total bouts with five coming in the first eight matches. Morley’s win at 120 was the outlier, breaking up Warwick’s run to victory. Fischer (145), Abdoul Akala (160), Jonathan Lopez (189), Zander Rider (215) and Mukhammed Karayev (285) accounted for the remaining five wins. CV was finally able to come out on top against Township, posting a 39-33 win on the 19th. This time it was a late Buckskin surge that turned the tide. CV managed just one win in the first six bouts, Morley’s second period fall at 120, but ripped off six wins in the final seven matches to steal the victory. Fischer started that roll at 145 while Needham followed at 152 with another fall. Akala’s decision at 160 and Kirchner’s fall at 172 made it four in a row for CV with one final Township win coming at 189. Rider added a fall at 215 while

Karayev finished things off with an easy forfeit at 285, securing the win. RIFLE The rifle team experienced a pair of losses last week with a 498-483 loss to Elizabethtown on January 13th and a closer, 489-486 loss to Garden Spot on the 18th. Against E-town it was Sierra Land, Grady Ray and Ivan Shrom leading the way while Hunter Kleckner and Edison Stauffer were both one shot off the team lead at 96. Shrom (99), Land (97) and Stauffer (95) posted another top five against Garden Spot with Adam Zook (98) and William Roland (97) joining the scorers. BOWLING The bowling team was in action on January 18th, falling to Warwick 7-0. Luke Snader (526), Josiah Casler (523), Jocelyn Ross (491) and Rowan Aisenbrey (459) rolled all three games while Jason DeChristopher (161) and Ethan Tardibuono (404) combined to finish things up.

The mission of Off the Streets Lancaster is to help families and individuals in Lancaster get “off the streets” and into permanent housing. The nonprofit organization’s allvolunteer team works with local service agencies to identify individuals and families that have the financial means to pay monthly rent but need assistance with up-front money for a security deposit, which is often the only thing preventing someone from being housed. In addition, Off the Streets Lancaster helps provide furniture and household items to help settle individuals and families into their new homes. Nonprofit groups were nominated See Dayspring pg 12

Dayspring from pg 8 step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, delve into literature, and explore music, art, and more. The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded, and the Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten. Dayspring’s prekindergarten and kindergarten programs are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. As a supplement, IDEA! (Inspire, Discover, Ex plore, and Achieve) is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This program features a community style of learning and helps students apply biblical principles from direct Bible reading to their lives. It also focuses on science, history, STEM, collaborative group projects, and creative avenues. IDEA! also includes art, drama, and music activities and allows students to further their abilities in language, spelling, and math skills. In addition to kindergarten and the supplemental kindergarten program, Dayspring Christian Academy offers preschool programs for children who are 3 by Sept. 1. Preschool is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 11 a.m. These programs offer an introduction to the alphabet as students learn a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with a Bible Character Day complete with costumes. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math lessons are woven together and rooted in God’s Word. There are also guided free play, circle time, and daily art projects. For more information or to register for the preschool and kindergarten open house, call 717-285-2000 or visit www.dayspringchristian.com.
