Gifts Of Warmth And Comfort

Theholiday season is well behind us, but the cold, damp weather will be with us for a few months yet, and the need for warm outerwear among Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) clients has not let up. CVCCS director Jonathan Barrett said the organization’s coat drive, which began in September 2022, will continue through the end of February. “Families are struggling with inflation,” said Barrett, who added that refugee families that do not have weather appropriate clothing are also in need.

CVCCS is accepting new and gently used winter coats at its 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, offices each Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Barrett noted that coats in any size will be accepted, but there is a special need for small men’s coats.

Along with the coat collection, CVCCS is holding a hygiene drive through the end of February.

A Look In The Mirror

Welsh Mountain Historical Presentations Will Examine Racial Attitudes

For a few years now, the Racial Literacy Team of Garden Spot Village (GSV) has been meeting to discuss issues of racial equity and justice. Now, members of that group, in cooperation with the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) and GSV’s Lighter Side Players, have developed a program that incorporates Welsh Mountain history in a look back at prevailing attitudes toward race in the past and now.

See GSV pg 6

Personal care products such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, hand soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, lotion, deodorant, feminine products, combs, brushes, and cotton swabs will be accepted during the aforementioned days and hours. “I thought it was a good thing to start in (2023),” said Barrett of the first drive he calls “Fresh Start for the New Year.” Although personal care items may be donated year round, Barrett mentioned that the need is always prevalent and that the items are not covered by the Pennsylvania SNAP program, which focuses on providing food. Barrett said that being able to offer the products helps clients maintain self-worth. “It’s a huge aspect (of dignity) when someone doesn’t have that (ability to stay fresh),” he added.

Information about both efforts and alternative ways to take part may be found at https://cvccs.org. Readers who have questions may call 717-208-3711, ext.102.

Encouraging Bright Smiles

Reaching Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) parents of school-age children with a message about the importance of good dental health is a goal for Nancy Lopez, CVSD district nurse coordinator. To let parents know that dental evaluations and care are available to children in need, she and her fellow CVSD nurses send home paperwork and use district social media to get the word out.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Lopez noted that in certain grades - kindergarten or first grade, third grade, and seventh gradedental examinations are mandatory, but that other students who need dental care may also be helped by CVSD programs. “First and foremost, we have Smile Program … The Mobile Dentists,” said Lopez, who noted that the organization brings dental chairs, hygienists, and a dentist to the district at least once a year to perform screenings, cleanings, and X-rays and even to provide care, such as cavity restorations. The mobile care team is scheduled a year in advance, and once a student is seen by the team, a six-month reminder is sent to the student to make sure care continues. Students who need extensive dental work are referred to a local dentist.

School dentist Dr. Sara Gotwalt visits the district yearly to complete evaluations for students in the mandatory grades. Gotwalt makes recommendations to district nurses, who then contact a student’s parents if further treatment is necessary. Lopez reported that the Conestoga Valley Education Foundation has provided a grant to help cover

dental work for students in need for whom the expense would create a financial hardship.

Teaching students the necessity of good dental home care from a young age is another goal Lopez shared. “Dental education is done at the elementary level,” she explained, adding that school nurses focus on kindergarten through second grade, but that they may also work with older students, including life-skills classes in middle and high school, depending on need. “They talk about how to brush and floss and the importance of seeing a dentist and nutrition,” said Lopez, who added that nurses provide extra-large sets of model teeth to children to practice their home care skills at school.

According to Lopez, the district hopes to raise parental awareness of the need for good dental health, so CVSD children may benefit from the services that are offered. “Unless a student comes and complains of a toothache or we pick up on (an issue) in the mandatory grades, (we might not know),” Lopez explained.

Lady Bucks Take On Central, and Solanco

It is well established that fortunes can turn at the drop of a dime and the Conestoga Valley girls’ basketball team would be the perfect example. A week ago, the Lady Buckskins were rocking back-toback wins. After stinging setbacks to Solanco and Manheim Central, that has flipped to a two-game losing streak.

The January 24th setback in Manheim was a 62-26 final, a 36-point Lady Baron victory. CV started sluggish and that allowed Central to open a 22-4 cushion after the opening frame and stretch it to 38-10 at the break. The third quarter played out with the two sides going back and forth but Central posted a 93 edge in the final frame for

the 62-26 final. Rhiannon Henry netted nine while Gabrielle Moore added seven in the loss.

Conestoga Valley’s January 20th loss to Solanco was a heartbreaker. The Lady ‘Bucks battled back from a ninepoint halftime hole only to fall just short, losing 37-36. CV handled the bulk of their comeback coming out of the break, posting an 11-4 edge in the third. Add in the 12-11 edge in the fourth and you get the 37-36 final. Moore drilled five from long range on her way to a team high 16 points.

BOWLING

The bowling team continued to roll along, save for one small bump that occurred on January 20th in the form of a 5-2 loss to Ephrata. The Buckskins enjoyed two bowlers

with 600-series in Evan Zimmerman (622) and Jocelyn Ross (607) with Ryan Muckle (592) and Ethan Tardibuono (571) just missing that mark. Despite that success CV dropped the first and third games as well as the overall pin count for that 5-2 final.

Conestoga Valley bounced back a few days later, topping Manheim Township by a 4-3 final. This time two 600series bowlers along with two near misses were enough for CV to steal the win. Ross (643) and Muckle (640) collected the 600 series with Josiah Casler (582) and Zimmerman (574) missing that mark.

On January 18th, CV was able to knock off the other Manheim school, topping Central by a 5-2 final. Casler went crazy with games of 278, 222 and 267 to post an eye popping 767 series. Zimmerman started hot with a 227 but cooled to games of 193 and 170 for his 590 series.

Danny Subers was the final Buckskin to bowl all three games, going 186, 161 and 164 for a 511 series.

SWIMMING

The boys and girls swim team hit an icy patch in the water Thursday, Jan. 19 with the boys dropping a 109-59 final while the Lady Buckskins

FOODS

absorbed a 121-26 loss. CV managed just two wins across both meets with both coming on the boy’s side. Connor Ludwig took the top spot in the 50-free with a time of 23.23 while Daniel Ivanchikov posted the best time in the 500-freestyle, winning in 5:01.05.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

While the Lady Buckskin hoopsters have seen their fortunes flip-flop, the boys have not experienced the same. CV added two more games to their winning streak, pushing it to six straight which has upped their overall record to 9-7.

Against Solanco on the 20th, the ‘Bucks used strong first and fourth quarters to leave Quarryville a 47-34 winner. CV outscored the Golden Mules 24-7 in the crucial frames while absorbing a 2720 deficit in the first and third quarters. Griffen Rishell netted 15 as the lone CV in double digits.

Conestoga Valley’s January 24th tilt with Manheim Central was a back and forth affair with the two sides taking turns setting the pace. CV took first crack at pace setting, leading to a 14-11 edge after the opening frame. Central returned serve with an 11-10 edge in the second, making it a 24-22 CV lead at the break. The Buckskins moved back in front for the third quarter, posting an 1813 edge that stretched their lead to seven points, 42-35. The final stanza went to the Barons but the 20-18 score only reduced the final margin to five points, 60-55. Rishell led all scorers with 22 points while Tanner Petersheim added 12 points in the win.

RIFLE

The rifle team managed to hit their mark, using a 489-487 win over Wilson to snap their seven-match slide. The goodwill from the January 19th victory was short lived as Governor Mifflin posted a 495-487 win on the 24th.

Dominic Santamaria (98 & 97), William Roland (97 & 96) and Hunter Kleckner (98 & 98) were the only three shooters to finish in the top five in each match. Lydia Salmons posted the top score against Wilson with Abanoub William matching that 99 in the Mifflin match. Sierra Land and her 97 completed the top five against Wilson while Caleb Reiff and his 97 did the same opposite Governor Mifflin.

WRESTLING

The wrestling team kept their spot at the top of the Section One standings cour-

tesy of a 49-24 win over McCaskey on the 25th. The Buckskins claimed nine of the 13 bouts, including eight that came with bonus points. Omar Vargas had the easiest of those wins, picking up a forfeit at 114. Abdoul Akala added a major decision at 189 with Zander Rider (285), Nick Horton (107), Luke Morley (127), Miles Acosta (145), Andrew Stoltzfoos (152) and Luke Needham (160) adding pinfall wins. Teagan Ruble rounded out the evening with a decision at 139.

NHAHS representative Don Horning referred to the program as “a look in the mirror.” “(The program will include) a little selfexamination,” said Horning. He shared that at one time, New Holland had an “unwritten” prohibition against people of color owning property in town. “Was that part of the racial inequity that was happening everywhere in the U.S.?” asked Horning, who noted that discussing whether those attitudes affect today’s perspectives will be part of the presentation.

The first program, which will be held on Monday, Feb. 13, at the GSV chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, at 7 p.m., will be called “Personalities and Perspectives,” and it will feature letters and storytelling. Horning will moderate, and Ruthann Ware and Dick Johnson will serve as narrators. “While much of the program will focus on the changing culture of the Welsh Mountains from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, members of the Lighter Side Players of GSV will por-

tray the personalities of Abe Buzzard, Isaac Boots and Nancy Sandoe, three prominent residents of the mountain from earlier in the century,” said Paul Kelley, a member of the Racial Literacy Team.

Fran Rapp, head of the Lighter Side Players, will portray Buzzard, an outlaw who was active in the area in the late 1800s. Tony der Kinderen will play Boots, also known as Pegleg, a leader of the Welsh Mountain community. Born in 1889, Boots helped drive efforts to build a medical center on the mountain because it was too far to travel to Ephrata. Lou Ann Miller will play Sandoe, a black woman born on the mountain in 1891 to a Presbyterian minister and his wife. Her father served on the mountain, so Sandoe spent her childhood ministering to the mountain folk. As an adult, she was involved in the founding of the Welsh Mountain clinic.

On Monday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m., well-known local storyteller Ken Sensenig will give a presentation on

the religious history and mission activities in the Welsh Mountains.

“Sensenig will present stories and historical research,” said Chet Yoder, GSV director of pastoral services.

“He will touch on the Welsh Mountain Home as part of that,” added Yoder.

Yoder said the public is welcome to attend, and Racial Literacy Team

member Sara Jane Munshower added that the primary goal is to examine these issues locally. “(We want to look at) how (this history) impacts what we do going forward as a community,” she said. In the case of inclement weather, readers who wish to hear and see the presentation may livestream the event at www.gardenspotvillage.org/live.

1719 Museum Slates Tour Guide Training

The 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, is looking for volunteers to serve as tour guides for its historic property. The museum will host training sessions every Saturday beginning on Feb. 11 and concluding on March 18, with the exception of Saturday, March 4. The sessions will be held at 9 a.m. at the 1719 Museum as well as Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster.

“We like to share stories about the area’s history,” said Lois Miklas, administrator of the 1719 Museum. “We want to get people to think about what it must have been like for the people who first settled here and connect it to their own lives.”

There are only a few requirements to attend the classes to become a guide: Tour guides must be at least 18 years old and have the ability to educate small groups of people as they tour the property. Miklas noted that although the location has certain areas that can be physically challenging to navigate, such as narrow spaces and stairs, the museum will accommodate anyone who wishes to become a guide.

“The museum is great for people who like history; they’ll get a good dose of history from our local community,” said Miklas. The site is open from April until October, and the museum is looking for guides who can commit to providing tours at least one day or one half-day each month.

The 1719 Museum uses trained tour guides to take visitors through its property, which contains the original Hans Herr House, built by Mennonite settlers in 1719. It is the oldest site of Colonial settlement in Lancaster County and was inhabited by Mennonite settlers who traveled from Europe to Philadelphia before finally landing in Lancaster in 1710.

Visitors touring the property will also have an opportunity to see a replica of an indigenous longhouse that would have existed around the year 1650. The longhouse offers guests a view of how Native Americans lived along the Susquehanna before and during Colonial times.

The 1719 Museum also hosts its Maize and Snitz Festival in October each year. The festival celebrates various traditions and customs exhibited by both early American settlers and local indigenous tribes.

“It’s important for people to have a sense of what their community’s history is, so that they can see how they may be connected to it,” Miklas said.

To register for tour guide training classes, visit https://mennonitelife .org/1719-museum/.

The Strasburg Senior Citizens will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. at Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. Yearly membership is available to residents of the greater Strasburg area who are age 50 and older.

to attend activities and programs. The organization announced its new executive committee in January. Officers for 2023 are Joyce Patzer, president; Donna George, vice president; Franny Culbertson, secretary; Shirley Morgan, treasurer; and Jill Boisvert, director.

Additionally, Fairmount will hold its annual Quilting Days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11; Tuesday, Feb. 14; and Wednesday, Feb. 15. People of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced quilters, are invited to participate on one or more days.

Between 10 and 15 quilts will be set up for participants to work on in the Farm Crest Community Room. The doors will open at 8 a.m. each morning, and quilting will continue throughout the afternoon. Refreshments and a noon lunch will be served to volunteers daily.

Donations of quilts, quilt tops, or funds to cover the cost of quilt supplies are also welcome. The quilts produced during Quilting Days will be sold at Fairmount’s annual Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue in September. For more information, call 717-354-1800.
