Emme Dance Collective To Present “Veer By Ann Mead Ash

In 2019, Emily Kline and Melissa Faller, the founders of Emme Dance Collective, created a dance concert called “Bring Into Being to introduce their company to the Lancaster area. This year, the pair has created “Veer with a goal of distinguishing their dance company from other established organizations. “We want to be known for our thing, which is contemporarystyle movement, explained Faller. “We are veering off into our own direction. “Veer, which will include 10 dance pieces and last about an hour, will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. The original pieces choreographed by Kline and Faller will be performed by

more than 20 dancers, including 12 apprentices. Dances for the familyfriendly show have been kept intentionally short so that the performance moves quickly. As with “Bring Into Being, “Veer will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques pulled from modern dance, but the program will depart from the themes of “Bring Into Being. “This year, we are incorporating some different themes, Kline pointed out. “There will be similarities, but we both tried to branch out. Faller agreed. “I think with the title ‘Veer,’ we both felt (the work) was jarring, she said, adding that the movement and music will be edgier compared to the calmer “Bring Into Being. “This time we are trying to pack a punch with our movement and everything we are showing, noted Faller. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Entries are being accepted, with a deadline of Wednesday, April 1. Initially, the deadline had been a month earlier, but gallery curator and publicist Stephanie Cole explained that an extra month had been added so local art teachers have more time to participate with their classes. During the application process, digital images of artwork may be submitted. The originals do not have to be brought to the studio until the week of April 20, Cole said. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 1, from 5 to 9 p.m. A best-in-show award and a people’s choice award will be bestowed in the student and adult categories. Entries will be juried to ensure that the pieces in the show have theme-related subjects and that they are appropriate to be viewed by audiences of all ages. “(The subject) should be an animal that they’ve cared for, that they’ve known and loved,” Koppenhaver said. Application to the show is free, but a cost has been set to participate in the show. The participation fee will be waived for one piece for each artist who is a high school student or younger, with a reduced

“He was always smiling,” Koppenhaver recalled. “He’d sit there, and you’d hear” - she tapped her finger on a wooden counter. “He was thumping his tail to greet people.” Toward the end of his life, Milo developed cancer, and he died in November 2018. Gaul, who also had serious health issues, died at age 93 on Jan. 5, 2019, shortly before the couple’s 10th anniversary. In working through her grief from the two losses, Koppenhaver thought about how to commemorate Gaul and Milo. Thus, the Charles E. Gaul II and Milo “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition was created. The inaugural show last year featured 197 pieces of art related to pets. “There were all kinds of animals and some we couldn’t recognize,” Koppenhaver said. Styles ranged from the serious to the whimsical, including a cat wearing high-heeled shoes. “This was the first time we called for (a range of skill, from) children to professionals. We had refrigerator art next to $750 pieces,” she added. The second annual “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition will be held this spring at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N.

was expanded to two nights, and that format will be in place again this year. The family-friendly banquet will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 12 and 13, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and a family-style dinner including chicken and ham balls will be served at 6:15 p.m. A number of door prizes will be given out each evening as well. Fredericks, who hails from Medina, N.Y., has been an avid big game hunter his whole life. Hunting around the country, he has pursued whitetail deer, elk, pronghorn, antelope, black bear, and mule deer as far south as Mississippi and as far west as Oregon. He has hunted successfully using a variety of instruments, including a bow, shotgun, rifle, and muzzleloader. Fredericks has a history in law enforcement, with a career spanning 25 years. He is a retired county sheriff. Fredericks is a New York state-certified bowhunting education instructor and a lifetime member of Christian Bowhunters of America (CBA), currently serving as executive director of the organization. He also serves as the chair of CBA’s board of directors. CBA is an outreach to the archery community, offering programs for both adults and youths, while proclaiming the good news of the Gospel. The organization seeks to exalt and serve

Jesus Christ by leading lost people to Him and encouraging Christian growth. CBA’s purpose includes challenging bowhunters to allow Christ to govern their individual lives and to share the common joy and experience of bowhunting with other Christian bowhunters. According to Hertzler, a number of vendors will be on hand with displays when the doors open. Most of the vendors represent local businesses that sell hunting and fishing equipment. A vendor who sells jewelry will also take part. The banquet is known for the door prizes that are given away during the meal. This year, Hertzler said that a number of items have been donated by local businesses. Some of those will be designated for junior hunters ages 8 to 16. About a dozen Ephrata and Akron churches are involved in organizing the event. There is a fee to attend the dinner, and a limited number of tickets are available for each evening. Tickets may be purchased at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “Sportsmen’s Outreach, New Holland, PA” or by calling 717-7380963.

Not Just For The Birds from pg 1 Annual Auction To Support Benevolent Fund By Ann Mead Ash

“The event was started by the woodshop and only included the other clubs (afterward),” said Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV), referring to the community’s annual Birdhouse Display and Silent Auction, now in its 12th year. A variety of handcrafted birdhouses, bird feeders, birdthemed quilted items, paintings, wall hangings, cross-stitched items, and a hand sewn red purse will be on display as part of this year’s fundraiser. All the items that will

According to Cuthie, residents work on projects during the fall and early winter for the benefit of the benevolent fund, which supports GSV residents who have exhausted their financial resources. In the dozen years that the event has been held, organizers have raised close to $40,000 for the fund. Emme Dance Collective from pg 1 “Some movement is more animalistic,” said Kline, who pointed out that a piece called “Birds of Paradise” was influenced by tropical birds. “Some (numbers) are influenced by real-life events- even tragedies - and real-life relationships,” she explained. As with the debut of the company in 2019, Kline and Faller noted that dances will be quick moving and engaging, and the choreography will be colorful and upbeat. For “Veer,” the costuming will be brighter as well. “This year, we branched out, with some of our costuming being more vibrant in color,” said Kline. “We have some that is more eccentric, and (we used) more abstract shapes.” Faller and Kline attended school together in Manheim Township School District from a young age. Both took lessons at a local dance studio and, following graduation, majored in dance at DeSales Universi-

ty in Center Valley. At DeSales, Kline focused on choreography, while Faller was more interested in performance. The pair launched Emme Dance Collective in Lancaster at the end of June 2018. Emme Dance Collective is sponsored fiscally through Fractured Atlas in New York. In the past, Kline and Faller have used their talents to give back to the community by contributing to other local organizations, an effort they plan to repeat. The yearly dance concert helps raise funds to make that possible. “(The annual performance) keeps us going and allows us to give back and hold fundraiser shows,” explained Faller. Tickets are necessary to attend the show. A discount will be offered for tickets purchased by Wednesday, Feb. 26. Tickets may be purchased at http://www.emmedancecollective.com. Tickets may also be available at the door.

Host Families from pg 1 American Home Life International (AHLI) is seeking Christian families to host high school students from Spain in July. Host families must provide a safe and caring environment. Students will have activities twice a week, and transportation to a local meeting place will be needed. Host families will receive a daily stipend, as well as the opportunity to develop cross-cultural friendships and learn Spanish. They will not need to raise support. American Home Life International

Orange St., Lancaster. The fundraiser will support LMHS’ efforts to tell the full story of early Colonial Lancaster County. The event will benefit the Lancaster Longhouse. Built in 2013 on the grounds of the 1719 Herr House and Museum, the Lancaster Longhouse is a full-scale reproduction of an Eastern Woodland Native American Longhouse of the type inhabited by local Native communities before Lancaster’s influx of European immigrants. School children, adults, and families from across the U.S. and many from Europe experience the Herr House Museum and Lancaster Longhouse each year. The fundraiser will benefit structural longhouse maintenance and educational programming regarding both historical and current Native life in Lancaster. Creamery Receives Dairy Grant The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) board has approved a $50,000 grant for Fox Meadows Creamery Inc. in Upper Leacock Township. The grant will be put toward the purchase and installation of ice cream processing equipment and two 44-quart batch freezers at a new facility being renovated in Leola to accommodate the expanding business of the Fox Meadows Creamery facility. Fox Meadows Creamery was established in 2015 to process dairy and ice cream from the family dairy herd of 85 Holstein cows. The business has out-

grown its current facility adjacent to the farm. The grant will cover the majority of the project cost, which is projected to be $89,042. Fox Meadows Creamery will provide matching funds in the amount of $39,042 from a commercial bank loan. The CFA Dairy Investment Program funds came from a reallocation of funds from the CFA First Industries loan program. A total of $5 million was reallocated to the Dairy Investment Program as part of the enactment of the 2019-20 budget and companion Fiscal Code bill.

6Despite Losses, CV’s Youthful Bucks Show Progress by Leah Sintic

Warwick Warriors, the CV squad battled and the teams were knotted up at 12 apiece at the halftime break. Warwick managed to pull away in the second half, largely in part to their outside shooter, Lauren Pyle, who netted seven, three-point baskets for the

Lampeter-Strasburg. WRESTLING Six individual CV grapplers placed in the L-L League Wrestling Championships held on January 24th and 25th leading to an overall 11th place team finish in the 23-team tournament. Trent Ruble at 106 pounds and Leo Marente at 220, put together the best two-day track, each claiming third place in their respective weights. Ruble’s path to third included a pair of pins in rounds one and two, propelling him into the quarterfinals where he produced a 13-6 decision win over Ethan Missimer of Annville Cleona. A semi-final loss to Manheim Township’s Josh Hillard bumped Ruble into the consolation semifinals where he topped Hempfield’s Braden Edwards, and ultimately went on to pin Owen Lehman of Northern Lebanon in his final bout to grab bronze. Marente’s journey through the 220-pound class included a fall picked up in the quarterfinal round over Kyler Rodriguez of JP McCaskey. Marente faced his only loss in the semifinal round, pinned by TJ Moore of Cedar Crest. From that point, Marente put together a 10-3 decision win over Eastern Lebanon’s Bailey Beamesderfer, before the bout to decide third, in which Marente topped Cocalico’s Jacob Humphrey, 2-0. “Trent and Leo both had really good tournaments with only a singular loss,” credited coach Trent Turner. CV’s Keaton Fischer took fifth place at 126 pounds, Taylor Sheaffer sixth at 152, and Conrad Dillman (182 pounds) and Jesse Lonon (285 pounds) each

In Tuesday’s 38-29 slip to the “Every game there are more and more positives,” explained head coach Bill Moore of his young tenacious crew. “Our goal is to work towards putting a full 32 minutes together.” The Buckskin club has only one senior player, Savannah Byers, who co-led the CV point contributions against the Warriors with seven, along with a matching seven from sophomore Laela Robinson. Not only has the season been a rebuilding time, injuries have plagued the team from start to finish, making it difficult to get a full, healthy roster on the court-a fact that can be discouraging to any team, but the Lady Bucks refuse to give up. “We have had many injuries this season,” acknowledged Moore. “Despite this, the girls have worked hard and have risen to the challenge of learning a new system. I am very proud of them.” The previous weekend held a 56-31 loss to Elizabethtown, this time with Taylor Hehnly setting the offensive tone with 10 points, supplemented by nine from Robinson, and eight from Ashley Andrew. Those three athletes also earned a combined 11 trips to the line, capitalizing on nine, to produce an impressive 82 percent in free throw shooting. “We are looking forward to finishing the season on a strong Photo by Vaughn Brown Conestoga Valley’s Alexis Goldsborough drives past Warwick’s note,” encouraged Moore, gearing up Olivia Shertzer during last Tuesday’s Section Two contest for the final stretch of regular season games against Lebanon and in Lititz.

placed eighth. “Each wrestler that placed either met or exceeded their pre-tournament seed which is always a good assessment of performance,” pointed out Turner. “Every wrestler contributed team points and our team put together a pretty good effort.” The club built on that momentum heading into last Thursday and came away with a resounding 72-12 win over nonleague opponent Reading High School. Nate Kirchner got things started at 160 pounds with a fall, and the next three-of-four duals ended in CV pins with Jonathan Lopez (170), Josue Marente (195) and L. Marente (220) following suit. Throw in a forfeit win and CV opens with a 30-0 run. Midway through the match, Reading was able to gather two falls of their own, but the burst was short-lived as Dylan Rider (113), Fischer (126), Cameron Kistler (132), Tyler Jordan (138), David Dariychuk (145), and Sheaffer (152) all produced Buckskin falls to amass the staggering CV total. SWIMMING Boys and girls swimming split results on last Monday’s trip to Cocalico to take on the Eagles, in which the CV girls triumphed 107-56, while the boys suffered a 124-37 loss. The girls’ victory marked their second league conquest, and the Lady Bucks made it a good one claiming the top spots in seven individual events and all three relays. Sarah Marston and Karli Raasch continued to pull in massive points for

CV, each claiming a double dose of individual wins. Marston raced to the top in breaststroke (1:14.35) and butterfly (1:02.23) and Raasch won the 200 free (2:07.82) and the 500 free (5:28.9). Other individual event wins were celebrated in Ashley Nolt’s 28.31 time in the 50 free, Kyla Pham’s 1:12.22 in the backstroke, and Nina Kramer’s 2:41.45 in the 200 IM. In relay action, Holmes, Kramer, Pham and Marston cruised to a win in the 200 medley, clocking a collective 2:06.28. The 200 free lineup included Holmes, Nolt, Kramer, and Marston posting a 1:54.25, and for the third relay win, Holmes, Pham, Kramer, and Raasch combined for a 4:24.8. Micah Leaman pulled in the most points for the boys, registering a double win in the 200 free (1:53.73) and 500 free (5:08.61). RIFLE Split results last week gave the Bucks a 4-9 record heading into the final week of regular season matches. On Thursday, Ephrata edged just ahead of Conestoga with a 494-492 final. Madeleine King and Montana Habecker topped the CV scoresheet with matching 99s, and Dana Witmer, Edison Stauffer and Sierra Land posted identical 98s. Tuesday’s 495-478 win over Governor Mifflin displayed the progress CV’s squad has made this year as they earned their fourth league triumph. Marked by consistency across the board, Witmer propelled the Buckskin cause with a flawless 100, her second

time achieving the perfect mark this season. King, Habecker and Grady Ray each put up scores of 99, and Stauffer rounded out the top five with a solid contribution of 98. “Seniors Dana Witmer, Montana Habecker, and Madeleine King have led the way,” head coach Hank Oxendine described of the trio’s season long efforts. Land and Stauffer, both freshmen, as well as Ray, a sophomore, are giving a glimpse of the future, as each have earned their way into the top five multiple times this season while under match pressure, despite being new to varsity rifle this year. “This year’s team consisted of a number of shooters new to the sport,” pointed out Oxendine, explaining that “they continue to improve every week.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL CV boys’ basketball got knocked down twice last week with a Tuesday loss to Warwick, 68-48, and a previous Friday setback against Elizabethtown,

79-66. The Bucks kept pace with the Warriors during a tightly contested 14-12 first quarter last Tuesday, but the Warriors began to create some distance in the subsequent two periods, and did most of their damage in a 20-7 third frame. The perimeter shot was popular for both teams in the contest with Warwick netting a total of nine threepointers, and CV responding in kind, with seven. Austin Wertz netted five of those downtown buckets and also led the Buckskin offense with 21 points, while Bradley Stoltzfus chipped in with an additional dozen. On the 24th, Will Stone poured in 24 points during a trip to Elizabethtown, but despite his efforts the Bucks ultimately fell behind the Bears by 13. As a whole, the team produced a strong showing at the line, converting 10-of-14 attempts. Looking to finish the season strong, the team expects to take on Lampeter-Strasburg and Lebanon in their final week of the regular season.
