Musical Togetherness - LMS To Stage “Annie”
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“Wepicked our shows this year to celebrate the unification of the campuses,” said Dean Sauder, director of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) production of “Annie.” LMS recently consolidated its Locust Grove and New Danville elementary schools with the high school and middle schools at its Route 30 location, and students from all schools will take part in the play. The performance of the Tony Award-winning show will be Dean’s last time helming a musical production for the school.
“Annie,” the Broadway version first staged in 1977, will be presented in the High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Feb. 16, 17, and 18, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. The Feb. 16 show will be staged on a pay-what-you-will basis. All shows will be discounted for students. The Feb. 18 show will offer American Sign Language interpretation.
Honest Talk For Women
Group Meets Weekly At City Gate,
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Amanda Sensenig was aware that a men’s group had been meeting at City Gate, 100 E. Main St., Ephrata, for about two years. She told her father that she wished there was a similar group for women. “When I was going through my teen years, I had struggles,” recalled Sensenig. “No one would give me the answers I wanted.”

“Annie” is based on the Depression-era comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” by Harold Gray. The story follows the title character on her journey from a Lower East Side orphanage in New York to a mansion on Fifth Avenue. The show includes the well-known tunes “It’s the HardKnock Life,” “Tomorrow,” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” plus five songs not included in the movie versions. The musical was last produced at LMS in 2005, when it was directed by John Miller. Dean noted that “Annie” is a personal favorite, having been the first show he ever saw on Broadway. He added that while many of the students knew the name of the show, only a few had seen the movie versions.
Dean said the show, which has a large cast of more than 40 members - including 18 elementary- and middle-schoolers - is not without its challenges. Ignoring the W.C. Fields admonition to “never work with children or animals,” Dean pointed out that the show has both. However, for the title role, Dean has chosen an experienced actress in
Lasagna For A Cause
BY ANN MEAD ASH
For about a decade, members of Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church have held a lasagna dinner in February. Two years ago, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event became a drive-through. For 2023, the dinner will transition to a takeout-only meal.
This year, the fundraiser will be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster,
on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 3 p.m. until the food is sold out.
Those wishing to purchase lasagna are asked to come in the main entrance to the parking lot and park. Enter the building through the door closest to the parking lot. Parking lot attendants will direct traffic outside the church. Inside, lasagna meals will be ordered in one room and picked up in a second room across the hall. Payment by cash or check will be accepted.

GOTR Helps Girls Reach Developmental Finish Line
Girls on the Run promotes confidence, social skills and self-awareness.
BY JEFF FALK
All phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.
That’s where Girls on the Run (GOTR) steps in and helps girls put their collective best foot forward. GOTR’s mission is to help adolescent females become more social, more confident and more emotionally aware.
“We address the whole girl,” said Jennifer West, program director for GOTR of Lancaster. “Girls are facing
so many critical decisions at this stage. We help girls with friendships, resolving conflicts, reaching goals, overcoming obstacles and asking for advice.”
“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart enough,’” continued West. “We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”
West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an after-school, community program. “You can hop, jump and skip, as long as you’re moving
Over the years, Girls on the Run has seen its popularity grow in Lancaster County.
forward,” she said.
GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90-minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Meetings are conducted by volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s participants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 participants, 80
teams and 450 volunteer coaches.
“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West.
GOTR’s program separates its girls into two groups by age. The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.
This year’s spring GOTR program will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.
“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and we feel like Girls on the Run has become a household name.”
Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017, GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.
Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.
“Now we have girls who have graduated from college coming back and they’re like a bridge to the older people,” said West. “We’re a lot more sure of ourselves. We know it’s successful. We know it’s impactful. We know it’s making a difference in people’s lives.”
To register for GOTR’s spring session, visit www.gotrlancaster.org, email jwest@gotrlancaster.org or call 717-869-5655. There is a fee to register, based on income.

To discover how to help women and teens in similar circumstances, Sensenig contacted Floyd Shirk, who created Main Point Men of Faith, which Sensenig had heard about. Unbeknownst to Sensenig, Shirk had been praying about the possibility of starting a group for women. After talking to Shirk, it was decided that Sensenig would form a group, and in late September 2022, Main Point for Women was born.
The meetings, which include live and videotaped speakers and Bible studies, are held each Tuesday, beginning with a meal, which lasts from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Sensenig then speaks and devotions are held. At 7 p.m., a speaker takes to the podium for an hour to give a testimony. Sometimes a video message is presented in lieu of a speaker.
The gatherings have attracted up to 10 women per session. “It’s still small, but we are working on grow-
ing,” said Sensenig, who added that the intergenerational interaction at the meeting is a plus. “There’s something about having all ages, with the older ones able to help the younger ones,” she said. “I wish there was something like this when I was younger,” she commented. Most important to Sensenig is that Main Point honestly addresses issues women face. Pointing to her
own past experience, Sensenig said, “(When I was a teenager), I became angry with people who tried to help. The answers were always roundabout. I wanted straight, honest answers.”
Women who are interested in learning more about the program may search for “Main Point for Women” on Facebook or call 717696-9477.
Giant’s Feeding School Kids Initiative Returns
For the third year in a row, the Giant Company has announced the launch of its Feeding School Kids initiative and its $250,000 commitment to kick off the program. From now through Tuesday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation to
support public school district food programs.
Giant launched the Feeding School Kids program in 2021 to address the issue of childhood hunger throughout local public school communities. Together with its customers, Giant has raised more than $4.8 million to date to help ensure no child goes hungry at school or at home.
Through the Feeding School Kids initiative, school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity through activities ranging from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries. School districts in Pennsylvania have benefited from the program.
Rizzetta’s Tones To Perform Unique Style Of Celtic Music
BY JEFF FALK
Talented musicians performing, creating beautiful music together, doing what they love to do. An appreciative audience engaged, interpreting and hanging on every note. That’s the type of setting that Lancaster Catholic High School’s Fine and Performing Arts Department will try to create at its lovethemed concert on Saturday, Feb. 11. Celtic band Rizzetta’s Tones will perform at 6 p.m. inside the Lancaster Catholic cafeteria.
Admission is free, but donations for Lancaster Catholic’s Fine and Performing Arts Department will be accepted.
“A lot of our songs are meaningful to people,” said Bill Stine, Rizzetta’s Tones’ organizer and founder. “We’re telling stories. I want the audience to be thinking and I want them to be smiling. Sometimes we want to make people think about things they don’t normally think of. The performance will be about love. That’s a very big subject.”
Rizzetta’s Tones
Rizzetta’s Tones describes itself as a Celtic-American band, featuring a wide variety of sounds produced by an array of instruments, including the distinctive hammered dulcimer. Concert goers should expect to hear a large selection of tunes, many of which will be folk songs and some of which will be “celtified.”
“We all sing lead, and we all sing background,” said Stine. “It adds up
to an interesting concert. We have a lot of instruments on stage. It tends to be appealing to the audience.”
A pianist and a former teacher in Hempfield and Manheim Township school districts, Stine has assembled four of his former high school and middle school students - Randy Kochel, Linda Lohr, Jared McDonald and Amanda Wells - make up the

The wrestling team jumped headfirst into the postseason starting with a trip to Neffsville on the 27th and 28th for the L-L Championships at Manheim Township. “We had a pretty solid team performance with eight total medalists,” said head coach Trent Turner, “and we were in the team race right up to the championship finals but fell a little short in the end.”
The Buckskins finished fourth in the team standings. Luke Needham was the top medalist, taking silver at 160. Abdoul Akala claimed bronze at 172 after finishing seventh last year, while Nick Horton dropped just one match on his way to bronze at 107. Omar Vargas (114) and Luke Morley (127) earned fourth place medals while Zander Rider (215) and Tal Stoltzfus (285) did the same with fifth place medals. Teagen Ruble rounded out the medalists with his sixth-place finish at 139.
Up next on the postseason tour was a trip to ELCO for the opening round of the District 3-3A Team Championship. CV opened with a 3124 win over the fourth seeded Raiders but dropped out of the championship bracket with a 47-19 quarterfinal loss to Chambersburg.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
A loss in any sporting contest is never fun. Stack one after another and it becomes even less fun. That is where the Conestoga Valley boys’ basketball team sits after losses to Exeter and Warwick, dropping their record to 10-9 with the season’s finish line in sight.
The most recent setback came on January 31st with CV dropping a 7144 final to Warwick. The Buckskins were unable to get into any offensive flow leaving the Warriors holding the scoring edge in all four frames, with only a 12-10, third quarter remaining close. Griffen Rishell was the lone ‘Buck in double digits with 14 points.
A few days prior, CV stepped out of the L-L, welcoming Exeter Township to Witmer. The Eagles left town a 6746 winner, outscoring Conestoga Valley in three of the four frames with only a 21-21 draw in the final frame preventing the four quarter sweep. A total of 10 Buckskins scored with Owen Fisher’s eight points and Nasziir Anderson’s seven points leading the way.
Conestoga Valley did slip in a win over Cocalico on January 26th, topping the Eagles by a 45-42 final. CV controlled the opening half, but their 30-22 lead vanished with a 13-3 Cocalico run coming out of the break. The ‘Bucks were able to get their groove back in the fourth, posting a 12-7 edge for the 45-42 victory. Rishell netted a team high 16 with Fisher adding 11.
RIFLE
The rifle team was hit with two shots in the form of losses to Ephrata and Manheim Central, both by a mere two points. The 495-493 loss to Ephrata went down on the 26th where Dominic Santamaria was the lone perfect shooter for CV. Caleb Reiff posted a 99 while Hunter Kleckner, Sierra Land and William Roland all finished with a 98.
The Buckskins closed out January with a trip to Manheim, resulting in the other two-point loss, this one a 496-494 final on the 31st. Santamaria was the lone perfect score but this time Reiff, Land and Lydia Salmons all posted a near miss, 99. Christopher Therrien finished the scoring five with his 97.
BOWLING
The bowling team continued on their march to the postseason with wins over Lebanon on the 26th and Elizabethtown on the 30th. Ryan Muckle paced both wins, rolling a 631 series against the Cedars and a 677 series against the Bears. Danny Subers (595), Ethan Tardibuono (489) and Mason Tardibuono (407) also bowled a complete series against Lebanon. Evan Zimmerman and Jason DeChristopher rounded out the win.
Josiah Casler and Zimmerman joined Muckle in pushing CV to the win over Elizabethtown with all three breaking the 600-series barrier. Casler tallied a 664 while Zimmerman checked in with a 651. Jocelyn Ross just missed the club with her 595. DeChristopher (429) and Subers (162) teamed up for the final spot.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The girls’ basketball team was hit
with two more losses, dropping their record to 4-15 on the season. The January 26th loss to Cocalico was a painful one as CV went from holding 26-22 lead after three frames to ending up on the wrong side of a 43-40 final thanks to a 12-8 Lady Eagle run. Rhiannon Henry netted a team high nine while Grace Harrison and Gabrielle Moore each added seven.
The 38-30 loss to Warwick on January 31st was of the slow trickle style. The game remained even through the opening eight minutes but the Lady Warriors began to pull away from there, starting with an 11-10 second quarter edge. Add in the 7-5 advantage in the third and the 14-9 advantage in the fourth and you get the 3830 final. Henry finished with nine points and Erin Figart added eight.
SWIMMING
The boy’s swimming team closed out their regular season with back-toback wins, topping Manheim Central and Lancaster Catholic.
The January 26th meet with Central was close with CV winning 87-68 thanks to double wins by both Connor Ludwig and Daniel Ivanchikov. Outside of their solo wins, the 50- and 500-free for Ludwig and the 200 IM and 100-back for Ivanchikov, the pair also enjoyed wins in the 200-medley relay and the 400-freestyle relay.
Rome Lucchese and Isiah Dentel were the other half of the 200 medley while Ashton Reese and Aidan Campbell were the other half of the 400-free relay. Campbell posted the final win, taking the 100-breaststroke.
The going was much easier in the 100-45 win over Lancaster Catholic on the 31st. CV captured all three relays
and picked up double wins from Ivanchikov (200-free and 500-free), Campbell (100-breatstroke and 200 IM) and Ludwig (100-back and 100fly). Reese picked up the final victory in the 50-freestyle.
The Lady Buckskin side split the two meets, dropping a 57-49 final to Manheim Central while knocking off Catholic 71-55. Wins were hard to come by against Central with only Nastia Ivanchikov (100-fly) and Ainslee Helsel (500-free) posting solo wins. CV did add a 400-freestyle relay win with Ivanchikov, Hannah Granruth, Helsel and Cheyenne Plank doing the work.
Against Lancaster Catholic the Lady ‘Bucks used double wins from both Hollyn Helsel (100-breastroke and 50freestyle) and Ainslee Helsel (100freestyle and 100-backstroke) coupled with two relay victories to take the meet. Plank collected the final solo win, taking the 200-free.
The ‘Bucks posted just four wins against Chambersburg starting with Ruble’s tech fall win at 139. Miles Acosta followed with a decision at 145 while Akala also posted a tech fall win, his coming at 172. Needham slipped in the lone pinfall, ending his 160-pound match in 76 seconds.
The evening opened much better with CV claiming seven of the 13 bouts opposite ELCO. Morley (127) and Akala (172) enjoyed easy forfeit wins while Vargas collected the lone pinfall at 114. Ruble (139) and Needham (160) picked up wins via decision with Stoltzfus (285) adding a major decision to the tally. Rider was the final victor, needing extra time to claim his 215 match.

Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster, has announced its fourth Fasnachts for Fassnacht fundraiser. The event celebrates the Pennsylvania German tradition of Fastnacht Day; recognizes the Fassnacht family, which serves the fire company; and pays tribute to the late Jan Fassnacht, who died of cancer. Jan served as an EMS provider and East Lampeter Township police officer and volunteered at Lafayette Fire Company more than 25 years ago.
Community members may preorder powdered or glazed fastnachts by the dozen at https://tinyurl.com/lafayette fundraiser2023. The pastries will be provided by Bird-in-Hand Bakery. Drive-through pickups will take place on Monday, Feb. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 5:30 to 9 a.m.
All proceeds will benefit the Lafayette Fire Company firefighters and will be earmarked for cancer prevention initiatives. Proceeds from past events have enabled the fire company to purchase a gear washer, as even the equipment and gear that firefighters use increase their risk of developing cancer.

If indeed the symbiotic relationship between humans and dogs exists, then we must take care of them much to the same degree that they take care of us. We have a certain responsibility to do what’s right for our canine friends, to do what’s best for them.
It’s that exact philosophy upon which Overlook Dog Park is based. It’s a special place where dogs can run and play, a space where dogs and their owners can interact or mingle, simply a place where dogs can be dogs.
Located at 2215 Fruitville Pike and part of Overlook Park, the Overlook Dog Park is managed by Manheim Township. Leashes are optional, but diligently cleaning up what’s been left behind is always a good idea.
Some veterinarians recommend that domestic dogs be walked 20 minutes twice every day.
“I don’t believe there are too many (dog parks) in the county,” said Harry Norton, Manheim Township’s adult and family program manager. “Just like anybody, dogs need exercise to burn off energy and just for their overall health. At the dog park, some people will stay for 10 minutes, and some
will stay for an hour. But not all dogs are dog-park dogs.”
The 5-acre Overlook Dog Park is divided into three distinct areas: a common area for all dogs, an area for dogs under 30 pounds and an area for dogs over 30 pounds. The dog park boasts about 700 members, and approximately 70% of them are residents of Manheim Township.
“It’s a fun place. People come and enjoy it,” said Norton. “The park’s mission is to provide a safe area for dogs and their owners, give people an opportunity to unleash their dogs and, when appropriate, mingle with other dogs and their owners. We just want people and dogs to enjoy the area.”
Overlook Dog Park membership rates vary based upon residency, with a discount for Manheim Township residents. The dog park uses a key fob system to provide entry into the park, and all dogs must be licensed and vaccinated.
Overlook is a dawn-to-dusk dog park. There are 17 rules governing the use of the dog park.
“I think the activity there is just about right,” said Norton. “From 6:30 to 8:30 (a.m.), we get a lot of heavy

Operation
HOPE Recognizes Fulton Bank
Operation HOPE recently recognized Fulton Bank, a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, for providing nearly $1 billion in loans to low- and moderate-income homebuyers over the past seven years.
The announcement was made by John Hope Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE, during Operation HOPE’s ninth annual HOPE Global Forums in Atlanta in December 2022. The event included nearly 5,000 delegates and attained more than 1 million views online. The HOPE Global Forum is dedicated to expanding financial inclusion for everyone.
In 2016, Fulton Bank began collaborating with Operation HOPE, a nonprofit focused on financial literacy and economic inclusion. Fulton Bank participates in the Closing Cost Assistance Program, which provides grants to buyers to help with the upfront costs of purchasing a home. Fulton also sponsors Operation HOPE financial wellness coaches in six cities throughout its footprint. The coaches provide free education to consumers, focusing on improving their credit and preparing them for the financial aspects of home ownership.
Fulton Bank has helped facilitate more than $968 million in loans to more than 5,700 homebuyers under the Closing Cost Assistance Program, and that cumulative total is on track to hit $1 billion in loans in 2023. In addition to homebuyer loans, the bank has donated more than $8 million in grants to make purchasing a home more affordable for low and moderate-income buyers.

use. During the day, it’s much lighter, as far as activity goes. Then from 4 to 7:30 (p.m.), it’s packed again.”
Through the efforts of the local civic organization Manheim Township Dog Owners Group (MTDOG), Overlook Dog Park opened in 2006 with 250 members. By the end of 2016, MTDOG had disbanded, and the operation and maintenance of Overlook Dog Park was turned over to Manheim Township.
“We operate 13 parks throughout the township, and there are a lot of folks who walk their dogs in those parks,” said Norton. “People need to know that the dog park is there. It’s open to the public. It’s a big, grassy area. It’s a place where dogs can run and enjoy the open space.”
