LCCS Plans Second Legacy Workshop BY ANN MEAD ASH

h en describing the thought process behind presenting Legacy Planning for Uncertain Times, a financial workshop to be held at Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS), Doctor Sandy Outlar, who works in community relations for the school, turned to John Wesley, Methodist Evangelist and famous theologian, for inspiration. “‘Make all you can, save all you can, and give all you can,’” quoted Outlar. “I think that sums up what we’re trying to do.” He added, “We want to be maneuvered in God’s hands as to what we do with what God has given to us. This (workshop) is meant to be inspirational and informative.” This year’s workshop, the second held by LCCS, will take place in the large lobby of the school at 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshop will consist of

“(Attendees said) they appreciated learning ways to get the most out of investments and provide funding for beloved organizations (t h e y w o u l d ) l i k e t o support.” “Tax Paying With a Purpose” will be presented by Jason McDougall and will explore ways to redirect funds and utilize tax strategies. The final workshop, presented by Lamar King, will be “Investing in Periods of Fear.” Material will look at keeping stewardship purposeful in times of uncertainty. Outlar said that positive

feedback from the 2020 workshop, which was attended by more than 50 people, inspired the school to schedule another one. “(Attendees said) they appreciated learning ways to get the most out of investments and provide funding for beloved organizations (they would) like to support,” he stated. “There was praise for the quality of the speakers and the content.” Outlar added that the upcoming workshop is designed for people who may not have spent much time thinking about estate planning and who might “appreciate getting more out of their money with certain types of investments.” The workshop is free and open to the public, but those wishing to take part are asked to register by calling 717-556-0711, ext. 213, or emailing soutlar@lccs.cc by Wednesday, March 10. A continental breakfast and child care will be provided. More information about the workshop may be found by visiting www.lccs.cc.

Debbie Luther, market facilitator for the Vintage Revival Market, recently recalled the origins of the gathering. “A group of ladies used to meet in a Walmart parking lot to share vintage items found at yard sales and auctions,” said Luther, adding that she thinks those meetups began around 2012. Eventually the group began holding markets at an Akron church, and the event was held at that location for some time.

three parts given by presenters who are professional advisers and parents of LCCS students. Estate Planning for Eternity, which will focus on stewardship and leaving a legacy by implementing an estate plan, will be presented by Tim Shawaryn.

Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) senior Eden Addisu had been receiving emails from Questbridge, a nonprofit scholarship program for exceptional students from low-income backgrounds, for quite some time; however, she had not seriously considered applying to the organization. But during the COVID-19 quarantine, Addisu had more time than she might have had school been meeting on campus. “I thought, ‘Why not?’” said Addisu. The application process for the Questbridge College Match program has been called rigorous. Addisu noted that the application includes four essays rather than just one and that the deadline in September of 2020 of each year is earlier than most programs require. She completed her application for submission in early Eden Addisu, a Manheim resident and senior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, will attend Brown University on a Questbridge scholarship in the fall.

September 2020, and she learned on Oct. 20 that she was a finalist. More paperwork was required by Nov. 1, and on Dec. 1, she received the news that she was a scholarship recipient and had been matched with Brown University, her first choice for college. Addisu was elated.

Lasagna Dinner To Be Served Drive-Through Style Some of the most important features of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church lasagna dinner fundraiser will be the same this year. Organizers will still prepare up to 100 pans of lasagna in three varieties - hamburger, hamburger and sausage, and vegetable with a red sauce on the day of the sale. Meals will each include a square of lasagna, a salad, garlic bread, and a homemade dessert. Individual pans of each variety of lasagna will also be sold at a special price. Changes will include the method of delivery for the food and the date the event will be held. “It has always been the last Saturday in February, but this year, we have changed the

date to the third Saturday in February,” said Margaret Sensenig, who organizes the event along with Betty Snyder and Deb Burns. This year’s dinner will be a drive-through event held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m. Those wishing to purchase meals or pans of lasagna are asked to take Horseshoe Road to Industrial Circle and enter the church driveway from the right side of Industrial Circle. Cars will then pull into the parking lot, where orders will be taken and cash payment will be accepted. Meals will be delivered to each car at the south entrance of the church, and signage will direct participants out of the parking lot. Volunteers at the event will follow CDC (Centers for Disease Control and

CV Hoops Topple Elizabethtown, 72-45 BY LEAH SINTIC

Quarantines and weather cancellations have not been kind to winter athletic schedules, but one event that was able to take place was CV’s hosting of the Elizabethtown Bears on January 29th resulting in a 72-45 victory for the Buckskins. Adding another element to the celebration, the evening marked the club’s Senior Night ceremony which took place before the contest honoring eight Buckskin athletes: Zachary Fisher, Spencer Gehman, Gabriel Matos Morales, Cooper McCloud, Brayden Meyer, Luke Rumbaugh, Kyle Photo by Cheri Sine Thrush, and Adam Yoder. Austin Wertz scores over E-town’s Brandon Lewis during Conestoga Valley’s 72- “I love coaching this 45, Section Two victory over the visiting group of seniors and watching them comBears on January 29. pete,” reflected head

coach Jim Shipper. After tip-off, the Bucks saw success on both ends of the floor. The CV offense accrued 72 points, just four points shy of their season high, led by Rumbaugh’s 22-point effort. Their methodical attack was characterized by ball movement that yielded point contributions from 11 different CV athletes, and McCloud produced the second highest point total, netting 11. On the defensive end of the floor things looked equally impressive as the Bucks held the Bears to single digits in the opening quarter (15-8). “Our team defense was stellar,” Shipper said, emphasizing how the team has grown over the past few contests. “Each player contributes mightily within his role, whether or not that contribution ends up in a statistical column isn’t important to our team component.” One of those team stats that was hard to ignore was the Bucks’ collective effort at the line, topping 70% in a 12-of-17 free throw shooting performance. “We are focused on playing together as a team and pursuing wins as a team effort,” summarized the coach. On February third, the club faced an undefeated Warwick squad and fell behind in the first quarter. The Warriors went on to add their eighth victory to their win streak, 87-52. Austin Wertz stepped up for the Bucks, knocking in 14 points, McCloud once again had 11, and Titus York chipped in seven. BOWLING On January 29th, Haley Jack achieved a personal milestone as she led her team to a 5-2 victory over Warwick, posting a series total of 702, a season and career best for the sophomore, breaking the 700 pin threshold for the first time. With Jack scoring above 200 in all

throughout their careers, and their presence in the program will be missed upon graduation,” summarized coach Trent Turner. SWIMMING With the L-L League meet slated for February 5-6, the CV swim club has had to scramble and make adjustments in their final dual meets of the season, doing their best to fill the lineup. On January 28th, Micah Leaman produced a CV highlight during a loss to Manheim Township (131-38), claiming the 500 free victory with a time of 5:08.62. While their final headto-head meets have been characterized by missing athletes, the goal is for all players to return healthy and ready to compete in the league meet.

three games (268-212-222), the Bucks collectively managed to edge ahead of the Warriors in two-ofthree to gain the overall win. “It was great support getting Haley back in the lineup with her competitive spirit versus Warwick,” celebrated her coach Doug Davison. A team bursting with young talent, the Buck’s next two high rolls were both supplied by freshmen athletes. Jocelyn Ross strung together a 625 series, followed closely by a 622 from Ryan Muckle. The momentum continued to build leading to a 7-0 sweep over the Lebanon Cedars last Wednesday at Dutch Lanes. This time, it was Muckle setting the bar with a 245-210-203 series total of 658. “The League season is rapidly coming to an end,” noted Davidson. “Hoping the bowlers show this week with a little swagger in their step and compete in our League matches.” The Bucks sport a 26-16 record after the Lebanon win, and on tap next includes head-to-head showdowns against Ephrata, and Elizabethtown. WRESTLING After a week’s hiatus, the CV grapplers got back on the mat to host Reading last Wednesday and pulled away for a 78-0 nonleague victory. Forfeits have been unfortunately frequent during 2021 competition, as was the case in this matchup, with Reading forced to concede 10 of 13 bouts. Seizing the few opportunities to compete, Trent Ruble (113), Keaton Fischer (138), and Luke Needham (145) each pinned their opponents to capture the remaining points up for grabs for the Bucks. CV seniors Conrad Dillman, Jared Ulmer and Dylan Rider were celebrated during the evening. Each have needed to step up for the team during an already tumultuous year, with the addition of season-altering injuries thrown in the mix. “Each one has brought something positive to the program

All organizations that participate and raise at least $250 will be invited to tour Blessings of Hope’s facility in a private Church Spirit Contest open house. Eventually, the group members became too busy to continue to run the market. Luther, who had been a vendor at the market with her own Dazzling Daisy Designs jewelry, became the facilitator, moving the market gatherings to a space in the Shops at Rockvale that once housed West Elm Outlet. The next Vintage Revival Market will be held at Suite 1079, 35 S. Willowdale Drive, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free to the public, and it will feature more than 50 vendors, live music, food trucks, and giveaways. Among the many vendors will be those selling vintage furniture, antiques, vintage glassware, Pyrex items, lighting, knick-knacks, vintage planters with plants, wallhangings, artwork, vintage clothing, and more. “We have live music all day,” said Luther, who has lined up two musicians to perform at the Spring Fever event, which she plans to hold

Any funds that are left from the Spring Fever event will be donated to North Star Initiative, a local organization that fights human trafficking. North Star has created a sanctuary for female survivors of human trafficking called The Harbor. The Vintage Revival Market is located near the Disney Store behind the Cracker Barrel restaurant. The sign over the door reads “Rockvale Makers Market.” More information may be found by searching for “Vintage Revival Market “Spring Fever’” on Facebook.

inside and outside the Rockvale venue. A coffee cart and a cupcake vendor will be located inside, and food trucks will also be on site. One food vendor will have beers, wines, and ciders. Food trucks will include those selling tacos, soft pretzels, breakfast sandwiches, chicken wings, and french fries. Luther noted that antiques and vintage items are differentiated by age. “Antiques are older than vintage,” said Luther. Rather than being 100 years old, vintage items are 30 or more years old. “I am not an expert on vintage, but it’s (mostly) from the 50s, 60’s, 70s,” said Luther. There is no admission fee to

The Questbridge scholarship covers tuition, room and board, meals, books, and school supplies. Addisu will take part in a work study program during the school year, and she will be responsible for a summer contribution as part of the program. Addisu’s parents came from Ethiopia to the U.S. two years before she was born. Addisu attended Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy, and then came to LMHS as a freshman. She has been active in the International Students Association. Academically, Addisu has taken a number of Advanced Placement classes in subjects such as biology, chemistry, government and politics, world history, and U.S. history. These accomplishments strengthened her application. Outside school, Addisu enjoys working with children, and she teaches Sunday school at two area churches – the Ethiopian Evangelical church in Landisville and Worship Center in Leola. She has hopes of eventually becoming a pediatrician. Addisu chose Brown University because of the school’s offerings in her chosen area of study. “(Brown is) great for pre-med,” she said, noting that the school also provides an open curriculum, which she favors. “There are no general education requirements,” she said. “That will give me time to explore other things I am interested in.” Hoping to attend the Providence, R.I., school in person, Addisu has already connected with the Questbridge scholarship network, a group of students who applied for Questbridge scholarships and have become acquainted via social media. Readers who would like to know more about LMHS may visit www.lancaster mennonite.org.

A Beat the Cabin Fever Blues shopping event will take place on Sunday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Vintage Revival Market, 35 S. Willowdale Drive, Lancaster. The event will feature more than 45 makers, along with food trucks and live acoustic music by Kevin Koa. The Mini-Makers boutique will return. The event is free and open to the public.

GSV Announces Expanded Birdhouse Auction For 2021 Holding an auction in a retirement community is no easy feat under COVID-19 restrictions, but rather than being limited by the situation, Garden Spot Village (GSV) chose to safely expand the annual Birdhouse Auction that supports the community’s benevolent fund through the sale of one-of-a-kind items handcrafted by GSV residents. This year, the auction will be structured using two separate platforms - the traditional indoor silent auction and an online auction. According to Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with GSV, about 50 items will be offered on each platform. The silent auction will be held in the Village Square Indoor Park, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The indoor auction opened Jan. 29, and it will end on Friday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. Those wishing to visit this auction will need to undergo a COVID-19 screening at the front door. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays

and Sundays. The online auction can be accessed at www.gardenspotvillage.org. Items went up for bids on Feb. 1, and the auction will end on Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. Cuthie noted that the seasonal event gives all those involved a glimpse of the warmer months. “During the winter, there’s a blah feeling, and this is something to help us look forward to spring and birds and flowers,” she pointed out, adding that the items in the auction, known for being bright and whimsical, offer special variety this year. “With people staying inside (due to) COVID, it really brought out a lot of creativity,” she shared, recalling that the event that started with the wood shop now involves quilters, crafters, cross stitchers, and the art guild. According to Cuthie, this year’s creations will not only be plentiful, but they will also exhibit originality. Birdhouses will range from traditional log cabins to those made of unusual materials, such as wine corks, along with those that are designed to be functional for certain types of birds. One creation resembles

Bird-themed items include decorative shutters, quilted items adorned with bright red cardinals, and a cork purse and matching wallet in earth tones with a splash of rust. “I have a beautiful wooden tray with a chickadee hand painted by Barb Baxter,” said Cuthie. Dementia Awareness Information Session Set ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community (DFC) recently joined Dementia Friendly America (DFA), rebranding the local grassroots nonprofit organization to Dementia Friendly Lancaster County. One of the initial objectives of Dementia Friendly Lancaster County is to increase the number of people who are Dementia Friends. Crystal Yunginger, the Dementia Friendly coordinator for Lancaster County, will host a virtual Dementia Friends information session on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. She invites all Lancaster County residents to join the virtual event to learn more about dementia and helping local people who have this condition. Dementia Friends is an initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way people think, talk and act regarding the disease. Attendees of the information session will learn about dementia and the small ways they can help, such as telling friends about the Dementia Friends program or visiting someone they know who has dementia. Attendees will become Dementia Friends by attending the session.

Pet parents are welcome to shop with their dogs at the store, where team members are onsite to answer questions, offer tips or greet pets who enter the stores. Each team member is extensively trained in the areas of natural and holistic foods and is able to answer a broad range of questions about dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and fish. Shoppers can also take advantage of the free Preferred Pet Club, which offers members regular coupons for products they purchase frequently and monthly specials. Pet Supplies Plus will be open on Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. To contact any of the Pet Supplies Plus stores in Lancaster County, readers may visit www.petsuppliesplus.com.
