Planting The SEEDS Of Change

New Organization Set To Serve Community

“Ourhearts are to care for the community,” said Kristen Hershey, vice president with the nonprofit SEEDS, an organization formed over the last several years to serve residents of the Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD). “We exist to build partnerships.”

“Partnerships between schools, businesses, and other nonprofits,” SEEDS president Michelle Kime elaborated.

SEEDS stands for selfless love, empowerment, equity, deliberate partnership, and stewardship. The idea for the organization was initiated by CVSD social worker Katie Reiff, who serves as SEEDS’ secretary, about five years ago, when she recognized specific needs in the community that were not being met. The SEEDS leadership, which includes treasurer Sue Orth and board members Sally Bredeman, Chris Lautsbaugh, and Dan Cloyd, along with Hershey,

Kime, and Reiff, has chosen to focus on education, housing, and health, and the group works to meet specific goals in each category.

In the area of education, the group’s second endeavor in teaching free English as a second language classes will begin on Tuesday, March 21, and run each Tuesday and Thursday, through May 4, at Faith Church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Child care and a meal are included. “We are looking for volunteers to provide child care, meals, and transportation (for the program),” noted Kime, who added that teachers have been secured.

To find out what additional classes area residents may want to take, SEEDS offers a survey at https://seedscv.com. “We have ideas (for classes),” said Kime, who noted that budgeting, stress management, and parenting topics have all been considered. “But we want to hear from people before we start programs.”

An Artist’s View Of Lancaster

In early 2019, Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy Sr., owners of Tannery Antiques, 148 E. Main St., New Holland, were contacted by members of the board of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. The board wanted to move three paintings by local artist Milton E. Denlinger located in the basement of the building. After several months of negotiations, the 12.5-by-4.5-foot paintings hadf ound a new home near the front of the couple’s shop.

To help with the issue of housing, SEEDS representatives are connecting with Good Samaritan Services and Homes of Hope. “We would love to work with landlords who are willing to use their property for additional Homes of Hope in the CV area,” said Kime. “We have a big dream of renovating a hotel to provide additional housing,” she added.

Providing health care services to the local community is another dream for the group. “We would love to find a central location in CV that would be accessible to everyone equally,” said Hershey. “It would be amazing if we had a dental and medical clinic where kids could be bused during the school day for those needs to be met.”

To learn about the best ways to provide services, SEEDS board members have turned to organizations in the county already at work in these areas. “We initially met with CrossNet (Ministries), The Factory (Ministries), and ECHOS,” said Hershey, adding, “We ask questions, and they guide us. They are becoming our mentors. Kime pointed out that all three organizations have been “positive and welcoming.”

Looking forward, SEEDS is planning an informational breakfast and a fundraising push. “Let’s come together and love our community well,” said Kime. More information on SEEDS may be found at the aforementioned website.

A Call To All Animal Lovers

Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, invites all animal lovers and artists to share their submissions for its annual “We Love Our Pets” show. The show will exhibit during the month of May for National Pet Month, and submissions will be accepted until Monday, April 10.

Submissions may be artwork in any medium, such as photography, sculpture, painting or collage, and both professional and amateur artists of any age are encouraged to participate. All artwork is free to submit, and artists may submit any number of pieces. Mulberry Art Studios will accept five to eight pieces of artwork per adult and three pieces per child.

The only criterion for submissions is that they depict an animal that would reasonably be kept as a pet, meaning that pieces that portray fictional and undomesticated animals will not be accepted. “It doesn’t have to be your pet specifically, but it has to be reasonable,” said Stephanie Kulfan, gallery curator at Mulberry Art Studios. “It’s supposed to be a celebration of our love of animals and their significance in our lives.”

Mulberry Art Studios created “We Love Our Pets” five years ago, after gallery owner April Koppenhaver experienced two significant losses in her life. Koppenhaver’s husband, Charles Gaul, and her beagle mix, Milo, both passed away within a month of each other, and Koppenhaver and Kulfan wanted to create a way to honor them. They decided to start an annual community art show that would be centered around pets and that would benefit an animal rescue in the area. Each year, Mulberry Art Studios supports the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue by donating a portion of all art sales from the exhibit. On opening night, members of the Sebastian Foundation will have a table at the studio to accept donations, and several vendors will be present to sell pet-related items.

CV Boys’ Basketball Sits at 10-11 Overall

As far as late season swoons go you will be hard pressed to find one more painful than what the boys’ basketball team

is currently experiencing. The ‘Bucks were a respectable 10-7 overall with a shot at making the District 3-6A tournament. Four straight losses later and the Buckskins are now 10-11 with the postseason well out of reach.

CV followed losses to Exeter Township and Warwick with a 51-49, gut wrenching setback to Ephrata on the 3rd. The gut wrenching part came as CV watched their 40-35 lead heading into the final frame evaporate thanks to a 16-9 Mountaineer surge, leading to the two-point setback.

Tanner Petersheim netted a team high 21 while Griffen Rishell added 17 in the loss.

A few nights later the Buckskins made the journey to Elizabethtown and returned home with a 61-53 loss to the Bears.

Eight different Buckskins cracked the scoring column but Rishell was the lone player in double digits with 15. CV was able to hold a 34-24 edge in the first and fourth quarters only to see E-town control the middle section to the tune of 37-19 to finish on top.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Not all wins will clinch a playoff spot, secure a championship or even propel a team to more victories but a win is still a win. When that win also snaps a five-game slide it carries just a little more weight. Such was the case for Conestoga Valley’s 53-40 victory over Elizabethtown on February 7th. It did not bring the postseason any closer, but it did move the Lady Buckskins

to 5-16 overall and 4-7 in Section Two play.

Despite the 13-point final margin, things started shaky for CV. Elizabethtown opened a one-point edge after the first quarter and seemed in control after extending the cushion to three points at the break. Conestoga Valley had other ideas and ripped off a 16-6 run coming out of intermission, flipping the three point deficit into a 39-32 lead. The Lady ‘Bucks continued their torrid second half with a 14-8 run through the final frame for the 53-40 final. Rhiannon Henry led the way with 15 points while Erin Figart added 13 points.

The final loss in that fivegame stretch came on the 3rd when CV fell to Ephrata by a 46-19 final. The Lady Buckskins jumped out to a 9-3 edge after the opening quarter, but it was all downhill from there. It started in the second where the Lady Mountaineers erased CV’s lead with a 10-2 run, making it a 13-11 game at halftime. A 338 Ephrata blitz came after the break, leaving Conestoga Valley bewildered and with a 27-point loss. Grace Harrison topped CV’s scoring with seven points.

WRESTLING

The wrestling team bounced from the postseason on February 2nd back to the regular season on the 4th. The fun started with a trip to Spring Grove on the 2nd where CV battled the Rockets in a District 3-3A consolation match where the winner advanced and the loser saw their team postseason come to a close. Conestoga Valley ended up on the wrong side of a 34-32 final thanks largely to four pinfalls for Spring Grove and only three for Conestoga Valley.

Andrew Stoltzfoos (152), Luke Needham (172) and Luke

Morley (127) earned those pinfall wins, accounting for more than half of CV’s team tally. Teagan Ruble opened the match with a tech fall win at 139 with Abdoul Akala adding another at 189. Nick Horton picked up the final win, posting a major decision at 107.

“Winning the Rally in the Valley Duals was a great way to end a tough week of wrestling,” said head coach Trent Turner of his team’s 3-0 run through the event. The week started with CV’s first ever win in the district team tournament and ended with the undefeated run at their own dual tournament.

The Buckskins had little trouble with Hanover (67-6) or Strath Haven (54-15) but needed a pinfall win in the last bout to slip by Daniel Boone 32-29. Morley was the victor in that deciding match, taking all of 21 seconds to lock up the win.

Zander Rider (215) was the only other pinfall winner, but Sean Morley (107) did enjoy the six team points for his forfeit win. Bryce Bowman (133) and Needham (160) tacked on major decision wins while Akala (172) and Horton (114) rounded things out with standard decisions.

In CV’s other two matches wins came in bunches, especially opposite Hanover where the Buckskins claimed 12 of the 13 bouts. Four of those were forfeit with Bowman (133), Tyler Stoltzfus (172), Rider (215) and Horton (107) getting the easy wins. Five more wins came via pinfall starting with Morley at 127 and ending with Townsen Bagley at 114. In between came Akala (189), Tal Stoltzfus (285) and Macoy Kneisley (152). Two of CV’s final three wins came

via major decision thanks to Miles Acosta (145) and Needham (160) with Ruble tacking on a tech fall win at 139.

Conestoga Valley’s final win of the day included 10 match wins and a 54-15 final over Strath Haven. Bagley (114) and Abel Adonay (121) enjoyed back-to-back forfeit wins with Andrew Stoltzfoos (145), Needham (160), Akala (172), Horton (107) and Bowman (133) all collecting six team points with pinfall wins. Ruble added a major decision at 139, Morley a tech fall at 127 while Rider finished things up with an overtime win at 215.

It was back to a regular dual match on the 8th with CV topping Muhlenberg 43-21. Seven of the ‘Bucks eight wins came with bonus points, including six that provided the six-point max. Stoltzfus (285) picked up the lone forfeit while Needham (160), Akala (172), Omar Vargas (114), Morley (127) and Acosta (145) all earned pinfall wins. Ruble accounted for the final bonus point win, posting a major decision at 139. Horton tacked on a 4-1 win at 107 to finish up the victory.

BOWLING

The bowling team finished their regular season on February 3rd, topping Cedar Crest by a 7-0 final. Josiah Casler (643), Evan Zimmerman (636) and Ryan Muckle (630) led the charge with Jason DeChristopher (494) bowling the final full series. Jocelyn Ross (350) and

Mason Tardibuono (234) teamed up for the final spot, combining for a 584.

RIFLE

The rifle team closed the books on the 2022-2023 season, splitting their final two matches for a 3-11 overall mark. The Buckskins closed things out on the 7th with a 491-490 win over Garden Spot with a loss to Elizabethtown coming on the 2nd by a 494-487 final.

Sierra Land was the lone shooter to post a perfect score, doing so in both matches. Dominic Santamaria just missed with back-to-back 99s. Caleb Reiff (97), William Roland (96) and Lydia Salmons (95) finished the scoring five against Elizabethtown. Abanoub William (98), Hunter Kleckner (97) and Joys William (97) rounded out the win over Garden Spot.

New Program Aims To Reduce Food Waste

Lancaster Central Market, 23 N. Market St., Lancaster, has launched the Kathleen L. Peck After Market program to reduce food waste, improve community health, and honor the memory of Peck. Designed to ensure nutritious food ends up on local tables, not in landfills, market standholders offer free goods that will expire before the next market day.

After Market is open to the public and operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Shoppers are asked to browse the tables in a single-file line and take only three to five items at first. Shoppers may return to the end of the line as often as they wish. After Market shoppers should bring their own bags, as none will be provided.

“They are painted on Masonite, so they are heavy,” said Dibartolo, who added that it takes six people to move each painting.

Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was a Soudersburg resident who sold paintings from his shop on Route 30 near Paradise. He took lessons from local painters as far east as Philadelphia, and he worked in watercolors and pastels, as well as oils. He was known for his murals, including one of Christ that is still hanging in the Akron United

Zion Church. The three murals stored in the ULTWMA building were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to hang in the ULTWMA building, then called the Leola Community Building. While the paintings depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County, they are also historical, representing a chronological sequence of the area from the 1700s to beyond the 1950s. The winter scene, which is set in the 1700s, includes a red barn and a covered bridge all decorated

in a layer of white. The summer scene, which harkens to the 1800s, depicts a steam train, a one-room schoolhouse, and a swimming hole.

Autumn shows Lancaster County in 1953, with a glimpse into the future by featuring superhighways, a diesel train, and powered farm equipment.

Dibartolo said she and Heagy have delved into the story behind the pieces, noting they were painted in the living room of Denlinger’s ranch-style home in only a few

weeks each. Each painting has a Bible verse on the frame. For instance, the winter scene quotes Matthew 5:5, which begins with “Blessed are the meek.” On the backs, Denlinger wrote his name, the year, and other information, including, “Theme … ‘How Dear Are the Scenes of My Childhood.’”

Dibartolo has studied the paintings, and she pointed out Denlinger’s thumbprints in the smoke of the steam engine and the fact that in each one someone is waving to the viewer. She also noted the impressionist technique Denlinger used that makes the paintings clearer from a distance than they are up close. Dibartolo noted the lavender hues of the sky in one painting and the shadows on the water in another. “Aren’t they beautiful?” she commented.

Dibartolo and Heagy would like to see the paintings go to an appropriate home within Lancaster County. To contact someone at Tannery Antiques, readers may visit www.reallancastercounty.com or search for “Tannery Antiques LLC” on Facebook.

Elisha Grant, lead vocals and acoustic guitar, got his inspiration to play music when he was a boy, listening to his father and uncles play Appalachian music on guitars and the banjo during hunting season at the family’s hunting camp in Potter County. Grant later became an enthusiast of rock bands such as CCR, Deep Purple and Johnny Winter before rediscovering the country music of performers such as Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. He became a songwriter as well as a guitar player, performing throughout Pennsylvania.

Kirby Martzall, electric guitar player and vocalist for Common Ground, has opened for acts such as Gordon Lightfoot and Roy Buchanan. Joey Nichols, who performed with the Nichols Brothers Band for 25 years, is a bass guitarist, harmony singer and music arranger for Common Ground. Drummer Dave Force’s musical influences included the James Gang and Buddy Rich. Pedal Steel guitarist Bob Herr shared the stage with performers such as the Charlie Daniels Band and Clint Black.

The Feb. 24 show will be the second entertainment show of 2023 hosted by the nonprofit Eicher Arts Center Inc.

There will be a cover charge. Food and drinks will be available on-site from Brewster’s Bar-B-Que and TMD’s Traveling Bar.

Campus in Lancaster at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year.

Describing the change to the former administrative offices in the Rutt Academic Center, which were remodeled into a MakerSpace and art room for elementary students, Kreider pointed out the room offers large windows, commenting, “It’s a beautiful space for kids to be creating (whether) in art class (or) doing hands-on design process … with art teacher Jenna Longenecker Conde.” Kreider also explained how former family consumer science classrooms were transformed into prekindergarten and kindergarten spaces, and she noted that elementary students have a new library media room in what was once a gathering space for high school students. Kreider also lauded the benefits of a larger gym and a new playground.

The unification also made Locust Grove’s Spanish immersion program an option for all elementary students. “We have a really thriving program in kindergarten where children are in full Spanish all day,” said Kreider, who added that both Spanish and English tracks are available to elementary students, with half the classes in middle school offered in Spanish and an Advanced Placement program in high school. Kreider pointed out that four students from Spain are currently matriculating at LMS and that Lancaster-based students visited Spain during the summer of 2022 as part of that exchange program.

Using campus facilities to promote experiential learning has been the goal of an effort overseen by teacher Galen Sauder, who brings animals from home, including chicks and rabbits, to

help teach students. “Because the campus is wooded and has streams, (Sauder takes students) to explore those areas,” said Kreider, who noted that younger students are learning about trees or the life forms found in the creek and that high school students are studying forestry and biology in the outdoor setting.

Middle school students are utilizing the greenhouse and the agricultural technology area on the campus. “First thing (when they arrive at school), they water plants ... and help take care of animals,” said Kreider. “(The students have a lot of dreams that keep growing because the kids are engaging with those opportunities (at the unified campus),” said Kreider.

LMS has served students in the Lancaster area since 1939. More information about LMS may be found at www.lancastermennonite.org.

After Market

frompg 6

Before the pandemic, the Central Market Trust partnered with local nonprofits to pick up food donations directly from the market house. Due to staff constraints and varying donation amounts, Trust staff members sought other ways to reduce waste and bridge the gap to ensure that food flowing into the Central Market makes it onto kitchen tables.

The family of Peck helped launch After Market in her memory after she passed away suddenly in 2022. Mike Peck, Kathy’s husband, noted that his family has bought much of its food from Central Market.
