The Potter’s House Plans Annual Banquet By Ann Mead Ash
Approaching The Potter’s House (TPH) at Still Waters campus, 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, one might expect to find a large institutional-style building ready to house students working to overcome addictions in a modern setting. Quite the opposite is true. Two nearly completed homes sit close together overlooking the Conestoga River. “We believe in family,” said TPH men’s ministry director Lanny Millette. “The (students) come out of institutions, so we want them to experience a more intimate family-style setting.” Lloyd Hoover, TPH executive director, echoed Millette’s thoughts. “The potential of family is to be a place where you’re able to grow in a healthy way and find healing,” he said. “(Still Waters) is designed to create an atmosphere for healing and building of relationships.” The completion of the second student house at Still Waters in the fall will be the culmination of a more than 15-year dream for the ministry. When Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) musical director Dean Sauder chose the musical “Beauty and the Beast” for the school’s spring offering, he was not thinking about how aspects of the play would echo the school’s theme for the year of “Transformation,” but he was amazed to recognize how the two went hand-in-hand. “When we come to Christ, we are transformed,” noted Dean. “Belle sees
Cavod To Take “Cinderella” Beyond The Fairy Tale By Ann Mead Ash
Looking forward to the completion of the first student house and the director’s house at Still Waters are (from left) The Potter’s House men’s associate ministry director Rob Weatherholtz, executive director Lloyd Hoover, and men’s ministry director Lanny Millette. The organization will celebrate the milestone at its annual banquet on March 13 at Shady Maple.
LMHS To Present “Beauty And The Beast” Musical And Meet-And-Greet
Monica DePaul, director of the upcoming musical production of “Cinderella” at Cavod Theatre, admits she has not always been a fan of fairy tales in recent years. “They were fun when I was 8, but now I want to watch a girl who has dreams beyond the prince,” mused DePaul. Fortunately, the 2013 Broadway revival production of “Cinderella” gave DePaul a heroine with depth. “We still have a prince and a love story, but there’s self-discovery for Cinderella in this version and friendship and forgiveness,” said DePaul. “Even with a modern retelling, it doesn’t lose that old-fashioned charm.” “Cinderella” will play at the Cavod See “Cinderella” pg 10

Tracey Strohecker and Annie Friedrichs are both excited about the atmosphere that Heart2Heart4Women will offer those who attend, and neither can wait to invite area women to join them. Heart2Heart4Women will be a
monthly event focused on women gathering together for friendship and networking opportunities. Attendees will also hear stories from women who have had experiences that others can learn from. “Come as you are and enjoy a venue designed around friendship and acceptance,” said Strohecker. “We’re looking for women to enjoy a great evening out in a safe place where we can build a sisterhood.” “It’s so much more than just friendship and networking,” added Friedrichs. “It’s for the girl

Jennie Straub, client services and outreach specialist at Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, is concerned by the percentage of parents who are unaware of tech abuse in teenage relationships. Some researchers put that statistic at more than 80%, and that spurs Straub to let parents and their children know that it does not have to be that way. During February, which is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, she is especially keen to get the word out about a curriculum Cornerstone offers to both students and parents. Straub is certified to teach two curriculums that pertain to adolescent safety and health with regard to dating issues. Relationships Under Construction, developed by Catherine Wood, is a relationship sexual risk avoidance curriculum for the whole person. It is for youths in grades five through 12 and can be taught in ageappropriate segments. Constructing Safe Relationships is a dating violence curriculum from the same publisher. The curriculum is set up to be taught in three sessions to seventh- and eighth-grade students and in four sessions to ninth- through 12th-grade students. Debbie Davenport,
executive director at Cornerstone, is also certified to teach the curriculum. Both curriculums can be modified to be taught to parents as well. Cornerstone acquired the curriculums about three years ago. According to Straub, both curriculums were developed specifically to be taught in schools. “(Both) meet all the federal government guidelines and requirements for sexual risk avoidance training in schools,” said Straub, who noted that the scope and sequence for teachers is provided. “This curriculum was developed to offer an alternative to comprehensive sex education, which will start in kindergarten.” Straub added that Pennsylvania is an abstinence-only state. “(That means that) whatever you teach in the school must say that abstinence is the only way to 100% prevent sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy,” explained Straub. “That’s what this curriculum teaches.” Straub noted that the curriculum can be taught to youth groups, to community groups, at counseling ministries, or to parent groups such as a Parent Teacher Organization. “I feel it’s really important for parents and adults,” said Straub, who pointed to a section in the dating violence curriculum that she finds especially pertinent.
CONESTOGA VALLEY EDITION
March, will be just one of the goals of the annual TPH banquet, which will celebrate the theme “Captivity to Destiny” when it is held on Friday, March 13, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The special guest speaker at the event
will be Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown and founder with his wife, Gladys, of CCARS: Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services in Leola. Mwangi is a graduate of Lancaster Bible College and a board-certified addictions counselor who has worked in the field of addictions since
Jennie Straub, client services and outreach specialist at Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, Gap, holds two curriculums that pertain to adolescent safety and health with regard to dating issues. Straub is certified to teach the curriculums, which meet federal guidelines, to students and parents in the area. “There is a session about internet safety and how to keep your children safe from predators,” she said. “The idea is that a lot of children and teenagers don’t understand the dangers of what they can get into on social media. The more the parents are educated, (the better they can) recognize when their child is cyberbullied or other negative (areas) of their technology.” She noted that she believes teaching parents about the red flags of dating violence is especially important. Another concept Straub feels should be impressed upon children is the life success sequence. “It’s statistically proven that if you go to school and you graduate and go to college or start a career, (and then) get married, and then have children … in that sequence, you are much less likely to end up in poverty,” said Straub.
Straub has already been invited to talk to members of sports teams in one Lancaster County school. She added that some schools hold activities related to dating violence during February to help raise awareness. Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone is a resource center for those experiencing unplanned pregnancies and a limited obstetrics clinic. Services include pregnancy testing, limited ultrasound, abstinence presentations, STD education and prenatal and parenting incentive programs. Cornerstone is located at 5380 Lincoln Highway, Suite 3, Gap. For more information about the organization or the curriculum, readers may visit https://pregnancy resources.org. Individuals with specific questions may email jen@pregnancy resources.org or call 717-442-3111.
2006. At CCARS, Mwangi’s goal is to provide professional services in an atmosphere of Christian love and compassion. Millette noted that the Still Waters campus, which will hold a director’s house and a pavilion, in addition to the two student houses, will be for students in their first 90-day phase of recovery when care is intensive. “The houses we currently have (in Leola and New Holland) will be phase two houses, (where students are)
moving into the community with support and structure,” explained Millette. “Phase three (features) discipleship houses with minimal structure but (still with) support and drug testing.” Rob Weatherholtz, men’s associate ministry director, pointed to the riverbank between the house and the Conestoga and commented on the area’s importance to the organization’s goals. “When we work on family counseling, we will work on the family dynamic too,” he said, noting that a volleyball net, horseshoes, and a campfire pit are all planned for the area. “We want this to be an atmosphere of healing,” he said. “That’s why we called it Still Waters, (which is) from Psalm 23,” he added, paraphrasing, “He leads us beside still waters and restores our souls.” TPH hopes to have a similar ministry for women, which will be called The House of Ruth, up and running in Leola by the end of March. The ministry is also launching Weather-All Home Services to provide sustainable support to the organization. Hoover gestured across the river and noted that his father’s family’s farm was located in the area. The land on which Still Waters is being built once belonged to the Weatherholtz family. “The history here is part of the story of this place,” Hoover said. “(Still Waters) is about transformation and new beginnings - a new fresh purpose for this ground.” There is no cost to attend the banquet, but registration is requested. Readers who would like to register for the banquet must do so by Friday, Feb. 28, by emailing ttcph.office@gmail.com, searching for “The Potter’s 2020 House Banquet” on www.eventbrite.com, or by calling 717844-1720 or 610-718-6249. A freewill offering will be received at the event.

“We want people to see God through the love that shows in that room,” said Strohecker. Strohecker and Friedrichs hope women will see the event as a place where each woman is accepted where she is and as she

Narnia Tale from pg 1 Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) middle school students will present “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” at the school campus, 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata. A dinner theater will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, and performances will also take place on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 2 and 7 p.m. This classic story from C.S. Lewis follows four siblings as they pass through an old wardrobe into the world of Narnia, where the great lion Aslan battles the White Witch. It is a story of faith, forgiveness and redemption. Becky Degan has returned for the third year as director for HMS middle school’s theatrical productions. She also directed

“Anne of Green Gables” in 2018 and “Twain’s Tales” in 2019. Degan is the associate pastor of worship and Christian education at Forest Hills Mennonite Church in Leola. All middle school students participate in the production in some way, whether through acting, tech crew, props, set construction or service at the dinner theater. A Student Tech Team handles sound and lighting with support from HMS parents. Other teams gather, organize and prepare props for the show and handle promotions. The students and director are supported by a team of current and former parents, faculty and staff, handling everything from backstage management and
prop and set design and creation to student logistics, sound and lighting oversight and meal preparation. HMS has offered drama productions to the local community since 1988. For the dinner theater, separate fees have been set for adults and for children age 4 to grade eight; admission will be free for children age 3 and under. There is a set fee for general admission tickets for the Feb. 29 performances, with tickets available at the door. For details and reservations, readers may call 717-354-7100 or visit www.hinkletownschool.org/events/drama. Pictured on front: Hinkletown Mennonite School

Singer-songwriter Nick Hanselman will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 22. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will start at 7:30 p.m. Hanselman is the frontman for the indie-folk band The New Haven and is a worship leader for CEFC Church in Carlisle. He founded The New Haven in 2016. Hanselman started writing songs and brought members Grace Kensinger and Mark Sheriff into the fold of the writing process. In the fall of 2016 and the summer of 2017, the group recorded its first EP, “Seasons,” which was released in November 2017. The collection tells stories of joy, hope, loss, heartbreak, and forgiveness.
the possibilities in (the Beast), and she doesn’t write him off,” said Dean, adding that with the Beast’s rival, Gaston, the outside masks a less-attractive interior. “Are there possible Christian undertones?” he wondered. “It’s not a Christian story, but I don’t think it’s a far leap.” “Beauty and the Beast” will be produced at LMHS in the Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27; Friday, Feb. 28; and Saturday, Feb. 29. A matinee performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. In addition, a breakfast meet-andgreet with the principal cast members will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, in the school dining hall, beginning at 8:30 a.m. “(Attendees) can dance with Belle

and the Beast,” said Dean, who added that activities with other characters will be available to those who attend the ticketed event. Individuals who attend in costume will be able to purchase a discounted ticket to see the play. “Beauty and the Beast” is the tale of Belle, played by Becca Sauder, and the Beast, played by Noah Schnabel, who is really a prince trapped under a spell. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the spell will be broken, and he will become human again. Other principal characters include Isaac Kraenbring as Belle’s father, Maurice; Chadman Martin as Gaston; Isaac Harnish as Cogsworth, with Brendan Johnson as his sidekick, Lumiere; and Ella Murray as Mrs. Potts. About a year ago, Dean saw a production of the show that put some unique twists on the story. The changes motivated him to take on the show, which he said can be an overwhelming task. “It’s a huge show in every aspect,” said Dean of helming the cast of 53. In addition to the challenges of vocals, sets, and costumes, the stage show includes several musical numbers not found in the movie. “They have added a number of beautiful ballads that enhance the story,” said Dean, who noted that many of the songs are sung by the Beast and that Belle and Maurice sing a duet. “There’s a big production number called ‘Human Again,’ where all the objects dream of what it would be like to be human again,” said Dean. To enhance sound, the pit orchestra will be located on stage behind the action. “Beauty and the Beast” brings many inanimate objects to life, and the LMHS production will take that a step further by giving additional inanimate life forms a chance to move. “In the forest, there will be actors that portray trees, and the enchanted rose will also be portrayed by a live actress,” said Dean. Cast members reported that they are enjoying the challenges of the show, with Becca commenting that the music is vocally interesting. Harnish is having fun developing the character of the uptight Cogsworth, as is Martin with the over-the-top villain Gaston. Murray is relishing perfecting her British accent. As the Beast, Schnabel is working to portray a frightening creature that sings. “We have the idea that the beast is dark and brooding, but when he sings, it’s a high range,” he noted. The students are also considering the effect the show will have on audiences. “A lot of the principals have come up with unique ways to add to their character,” said Murray. “I hope the people who see it appreciate the new takes we brought to our (roles).” Tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancastermennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab, by calling 717-7402456, or by emailing boxoffice@lancaster mennonite.org. A discounted student price will be offered, and tickets to the matinee performance will also be discounted.

Raasch Grabs Two Seconds at League Meet an eighth-place medal. Adding a relay accomplishment to their resume, Marston, Holmes and Raasch were joined by Kyla Pham in the 200 free relay and combined for a season best time of 1:46.17, placing fifth in the event. The 400 free relay also spelled success for a CV quartet, this time, Marston, Holmes and Raasch teaming with Nina Kramer, recorded a seventh-place time of 3:51.31. For the boys, Micah Leaman led the charge, surging to sixth place honors in the 500 free (5:06.96), and finishing just outside the medals in the 200 free, coming in ninth (1:54.88). Though outside the medal rankings, several other feats and personal bests were reached in the meet,
including Conner Ludwig slicing five seconds off his 100 backstroke performance for a 1:11.35 personal best and the girls medley relay claiming 12th place, comprised of Gabby Barone, Nina Kramer, Pham, and Ashley Nolt, who improved their previous best by a full second. Leaman and Ludwig each swam a leg of the boys medley relay, joined by Josh Proch and TJ Conlin to garner a 10th place finish. “Coach Kimmel and I were really proud of our swimmers at the League meet,” praised head coach Barb Raasch. “There was lots of energy and adrenalin from excitement and nervousness, which created the atmosphere to swim fast.” With the team portion of the season concluded, individual swimmers

On low speed, alternately add in flour, salt, and milk until incorporated. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove cake and while still hot, spread peanut butter over top. Set in fridge or freezer until peanut butter is set. In a bowl placed over a simmering pot of water on stove, melt chocolate and 1 tablespoon coconut oil. “When the sun comes up and people start showing up, that’s my favorite part of the day, said Ivan Fisher, reflecting on the annual spring donation and consignment sale hosted by the Strasburg Fire Company, which typically draws several thousand people. “And you start smelling the chicken barbecue, he added. Ivan is the chair of the fire company’s sale committee, which plans the spring donation and consignment sale, also called a mud sale. The 46th annual event will be held on Friday, Feb. 28, at 4:30 p.m. and continue on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 8 a.m. at the fire company, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg. This is the third year for the Friday evening event. “We really like it, Ivan said. “We’re trying to make it like a family night out. Crafts and small quilt-related items will be sold at auction on Feb. 28. The menu for the evening will include shrimp, french fries, sausage sandwiches, and locally made ice cream. Multiple auctions will run simultaneously on Feb. 29. About 500 quilts, crafts, antiques, new and used carriages, horse tack, about 20 loads of hay and straw, new and used tools, new and used farm equipment, sheds, lumber, lawn and garden equipment and furniture, collectibles, sports memorabilia, new and used furniture and other household items, groceries, and more will be up for bids at the event. “Three areas do well: Quilts are always a big attraction, antiques have gained a lot of attention in the last few years, and crafts (are popular), Ivan said. “(The area of) sporting goods - hunting and fishing gear - continues to grow as well. At about noon on Feb. 29, a Strasburg Fire Company XL T-shirt autographed by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz will be sold during a break in the quilt auction. Ivan noted that Wentz and fire company member Don Grodski are members of the same New York hunting club. As Ivan previously suggested, chicken barbecue is traditionally among the food options at the sale. Additional offerings on Feb. 29 will include chicken potpie and corn soup, soft pretzels, french fries, hot dogs, burgers, strawberry pies, and ice cream. The fire company’s kitchen will sell
A Strasburg Fire Company T-shirt signed by quarterback Carson Wentz and displayed by fire company member Mike Lockard will be up for bids during the 46th annual spring donation and consignment sale on Feb. 29. Crafts and small quilt-related items will be sold on Feb. 28. breakfast sandwiches, and the pretzel vendor will offer breakfast logs. A vendor will sell meat and cheese for snacking and in larger quantities. Chicken corn soup takeouts will be available from noon to 5 p.m. on Feb. 28 and all day on Feb. 29. The proceeds from the mud sale will be used to fund the general operations of the fire company. The organization is also continuing to raise money to buy a new piece of apparatus. Ivan said that the fire company’s aging Seagrave engine was sold last fall, and the fire company hopes to get its replacement by next spring. “The sale is the biggest fundraiser for the fire company, Ivan said. He expressed his gratitude to the members of the various committees that are involved in producing the sale, his co-chair Amos Fisher (no relation), and the members of the public. “We depend on the community, Ivan remarked. “We do get tremendous support from the community the day of the event. New members are always welcome. Currently, about 35 to 40 people are active members, Ivan estimated. “We have a very good group of young guys here, he said. “The senior members are doing a good job recruiting and retaining these guys. Individuals who would like to donate or consign items for the sale, as well as anyone with other questions about the event, may call Ivan at 717-847-6334. For more information about the fire company and the sale, readers may visit www.strasburgfire.com.

Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 28 and March 6; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 29 and March 7; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 1 and 8. “Cinderella” is based on the age-old tale of the same name. This version focuses on the main character, calling her Ella, played by Hannah Rau, but adds revolutionary Jean-Michael, played by Joe Kelly, and a woman known as Marie, played by Kylie Nabers, who will transform on stage into the fairy godmother. Meanwhile, the prince, played by Alexander Weaver and known as Topher (short for Christopher), worries that slaying dragons is not important enough work for a future king. According to DePaul, the cast of about 20 is also taking to the unique takes included in the revised show. “There’s humor,” stated DePaul. “When people think of Cinderella, they don’t think of the comedy, but this version is very funny. (The cast is) embracing it, and I am loving what they’re doing.” DePaul noted that the comedy should appeal to both adults and children. “There is satire,” she said, noting that the show plays with stereotypical characters in fun ways. “(Jean-Michael) is a political activist, and he wants to call the people to focus on what’s important, (such as) land or food, but the prince invites everyone to the ball and that overtakes (the activist’s) stump speech. Something superficial overtakes what everyone should be caring about.” The production also utilizes physical movement and music to tell parts of the story. “We have some fabulous dancers, and we are using their dance ability to create the magic of the transformations,” said DePaul. “There will be dancers in costumes that suggest animal characters who through their dancing become footmen,” she explained. As a Rodgers and Hammerstein show, “Cinderella” delivers a variety of music, much of which audience members will recognize. Ella will sing “In My Own Little Corner.” Other familiar numbers will include “The Prince Is Giving a Ball” and “Impossible/It’s Possible,” sung by the fairy godmother. Hannah and Alex will also sing “Ten Minutes Ago,” about the joys of spontaneous love. Newer songs will include “Me, Who Am I?” and “Now Is the Time,” which will be sung by Joe. DePaul hopes individuals who see the show will relate to the transformations they see in the characters on stage. “I really want the audience (members) to find themselves in Cinderella’s shoes and know they’re worthy,” said DePaul. “(Ella) struggles with her self-worth, (but) her fairy godmother is there to let her know she is beautiful and capable and smart. She ends up helping to bring change to her kingdom. We all have the potential to be beyond ourselves.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.
Hannah Rau (left) as Cinderella and Alexander Weaver (right) as Prince Topher will star in the Cavod Theatre production of “Cinderella,” which will be staged at Cavod Theatre in New Holland on Feb. 28 to March 1 and March 6 to 8.
