Not Easily Broken
BY ANN MEAD ASH

Christian Academy’s Remember America Speaker Series team makes decisions based in prayer and with reverence to Scripture. The choice of three speakers for this year’s event is rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:12, which reads in part, “A three-ply cord is not easily broken.”
“Our team started thinking about how our school is in partnership with parents and churches in educating our children,” said Lisa Becker, events manager with Dayspring, which is located in Mountville. That three-strand cord of family, church, and education became the basis for this year’s banquet, with a speaker chosen to represent each of the three strands.
The 2023 Remember America Speaker Series banquet will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. The featured speakers will be author and
Fox News host Pete Hegseth, speaking on education; actor Kirk Cameron, speaking on family; and worship leader Sean Feucht, speaking on the role of the church.
Hegseth came to the attention of the Dayspring team when a school staff member read his book “Battle for the American Mind: Uprooting a Century of Miseducation.” Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone explained that the first community schools in America were instituted for the purpose of teaching children to read in order that they might learn from the Word of God. “In a Christian society … the community schools taught Christian values,” said Stone, who added that changes in education began to occur in the 20th century. Hegseth’s book outlines those changes and proposes classical Christian education as a remedy. “As a Principle Approach school, there are elements of classical education (at Dayspring),” noted Stone.

When Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Chad Roberts gave a presentation about Project Lifesaver at the East Lampeter Police Department near the end of 2022, an attendee asked if he might visit Garden Spot Village (GSV) to share information about the device that helps locate people with cognitive impairment who are prone to wander. Roberts, who is willing to discuss the benefits of Project Lifesaver with area groups, quickly set up a meeting with GSV staff.

“Hello, Dolly!”
BY ANN MEAD ASH
According to Alicia Burton, director of “Hello, Dolly!” at Cavod Theatre, the show is about finding joy in each moment. Musical director Amy Rau concurred, pointing out that Dolly is going through a difficult time, but that she is stepping out in faith. “Even in the hardest things we go through, you’ve got to find the bright side,” she said.
“Hello Dolly!” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. The
show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 3; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 25 and March 4; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 26 and March 5.
“Hello, Dolly!” centers around lovable widow and matchmaker Dolly Levi, played by Erin Wright. The musical follows her to New York to practice her matchmaking and heal her own heart. Along the way, Dolly matches up Irene Molloy, played by Eliza Moran, with Cornelius Hackl, played by Alex Weaver, and Barnaby Tucker, played by Richard Weaver, with See Cavod pg 2

In the end, Dolly provides Horace Vandergelder, played by Steve Rau, with a suitable wife as well. The cast of more than 25 will also feature Jess Zeidler as Ernestina.
“‘Hello, Dolly!’ is a spectacular show,” said Burton, who noted Cavod Theatre was in a good position to stage the dance-heavy musical because Cavod Performing Arts trains dancers. “We have been able to utilize their strengths,” she said. Burton noted that large numbers including “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” and “Hello, Dolly!” call for families and townspeople in
the ensemble. Both Amy Rau and Burton said they were blessed to see lots of teens and children at auditions.
Amy said that the songs themselves are joyful and memorable. “You cannot listen to ‘Put on Your Sunday Clothes’ without smiling earto-ear,” she said. “The music is so much fun.”
“You leave singing these songs,” added Burton, who is also enjoying working with the cast members practicing the Broadway classic.
“The seasoned leads are thrilled to have the opportunity to play these iconic roles, and we are getting to teach the younger ones about this historic show.”

The result is a presentation to be given by Roberts on Thursday, March 2, at 3 p.m. in the chapel at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “I recommend that any family members with loved ones who wander due to cognitive issues, (such as) dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, or traumatic brain injuries, (attend),” Roberts said.
Individuals who are enrolled with Project Lifesaver wear a bracelet connected to a transmitter set to a designated radio frequency assigned to that person. If the individual wanders, the battery-operated device emits a signal that can be traced by law enforcement. Should a participant go missing, the caregiver calls a local police department, and police officers pick up the frequency to locate that specific transmitter. The equipment utilizes analog radio frequency because of its reliability. Use of the system minimizes time and resources needed to locate someone, and when it is employed, most participants who wander are found within 30 minutes.
In fact, Roberts reported that missing area residents have been found quickly when the device is employed. “In the past year or so,
Textile Science Club Will Meet
Lancaster County has had a few Project Lifesaver clients wander off, and (they) were located within approximately 30 minutes of (loved ones) calling police,” said Roberts, who pointed to a Lancaster city incident and one in Manheim Borough.
“Both individuals were returned to their loved ones safe and unharmed thanks to Project Lifesaver and the responding officers,” he said.
In Lancaster County, Project Lifesaver was initiated by The Pilot Club of Lancaster, a service organization.
In 2008, Pilot Club members connected with Chief Mark Pugliese of the West Hempfield Township Police Department. In 2012, the project launched from that location.
Troop J began participating with Project Lifesaver a few years ago.
“(We) are proud to have this as a tool to aid in locating people that wander,” said Roberts.
Readers who are interested in learning more about Project Lifesaver may visit https://sites.google .com/view/pilotcluboflancaster /home/project-lifesaver or contact Pilot Club of Lancaster members Kelly Osborne at kosborne946@yahoo.com or Cathy Cieslinski at cathyc1981 @comcast.net.
The Ephrata Cocalico 4-H Club, a textile science club, will hold an organizational meeting on Monday, Feb. 27, at the Ephrata Fair Association office, 19 S. State St., Ephrata, from 6 to 8 p.m. The program is open to youths ages 8 to 18. Parents are asked to attend the meeting with their child.
Members should bring a pencil and all sewing supplies and equipment with them to the meeting. A schedule of the project meeting dates and an agenda for each project will be available at the meeting.
The club will offer beginner and intermediate sewing projects and will meet at the fair office on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. from March
through June. A team of leaders will teach the necessary skills to complete the 4-H approved projects and prepare each member for competition in regional and county events.
Sewing equipment, including machines, pins, an iron and ironing board, some shears, and scissors will be available for member use. Each member will be responsible for the cost of the items for his or her project. A variety of small skillbuilding projects will be used to complete each project.

BY ERIC PYLES
“It was a fantastic league meet for the swimmers!!”
exclaimed head coach Barb Raasch when asked about her team’s performance at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship Meet on February 10th and 11th.
That performance saw the boy’s team finish sixth in the team standings despite just six Buckskins making the trip to Wilson High School. Daniel Ivanchikov picked up an invitation to the District 3 meet
thanks to personal best times in two events. His 1:44.80 in the 200 free and his 53.86 in the 100 fly not only nabbed that district invite, it also earned him silver at the L-L meet. Ivanchikov added a sixth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with help from Ashton Reese, Aidan Campbell, and Connor Ludwig. Ludwig will join Ivanchikov at the district meet with his seventh place time of 1:48.54 in the 200 free, meeting the qualifying standard. The senior added a fifth-place fin-
ish in the 100 freestyle, dipping under the 50 second mark with his 48.99. Ludwig also took part in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing sixth with a time of 1:33.26 thanks to Campbell, Reese and Ivanchikov.
CV’s remaining relay, the 200 medley team of Campbell, Reese, Rome Lucchese and Jack Sayres, placed ninth with a time of 1:55.16. Campbell went solo for a 13th place finish in the 100 breaststroke, turning in a 1:07.73. Reese and Sayres also went solo for a combined three races, two from Sayres. The freshman clocked a 5:43.01 to finish 21st in the 500 free and a 2:34.34 in the 200 IM, good enough for 23rd. Reese did his solo work in the 50 free, taking 25th with a time of 25.22.
On the Lady ‘Bucks side it was Ainslee Helsel, Hollyn Helsel, Nastia Ivanchikov and Cheyenne Plank taking part in the festivities. The quartet swam in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay, finishing ninth in both events. Ainslee Helsel claimed 23rd with a 1:04.68 in the 100 free while Hollyn Helsel took 17th in the 50 free and 21st in the 100 breaststroke. Ivanchikov’s solo work came in the 100 butterfly, where she finished 18th (1:15.18) and in the 100 backstroke with the senior finishing 25th (1:15.69). Plank rounded out the CV swimmers with a 20th place in the 500 freestyle and a 23rd place in the 200 freestyle.
RIFLE
Conestoga Valley’s rifle team closed out their 20222023 season on February 11th when they hosted the LL Individual Championships. Sierra Land topped the Buckskin shooters, finishing in a tie for third with Manheim Township’s Alyssa Dunn with both posting the same 200 with no centers. Dominic Santamaria, who claimed CV’s lone All-Star nod, finished up the top 25 with his 197 and one center.
BASKETBALL
The basketball season officially came to a close on February 9th when both Buckskin squads tangled with Garden Spot. Both teams enjoyed lopsided victories starting with the boy’s and their 64-44 win. CV slowly built a slim six point lead over the first three quarters but erupted for a 23-9 run in the fourth to claim the 20-point victory. Griffen Rishell led all scorers with 20 points while Chris Dukes added 14 points and Tanner Petersheim 10 points.
For the Lady Buckskins it was a dominant opening quarter paving the way for a 60-29 win. In that opening frame CV posted a 19-5 edge and never looked back. The lead was stretched to 23 points at intermission before ending up at the 31-point final thanks to a 25-17 edge in the second half. Rhiannon Henry dropped 16 in the win while Isabella Johnson added 12 points.

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family
Going Old School for a Cause
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If the winter blues have you feeling low, head out for a fun night guaranteed to raise your spirits. Iron-Leg Corp. will host a Back to the ’70s and ’80s Dance Party on Saturday, March 11. The event will be held at Club Twenty3, 1703 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, from 7 p.m. to midnight.
“Come out, dust off your platform shoes and help support a great cause,” said Sean Laukhuff, vice president of Iron-Leg. “Come enjoy the night with friends and dancing and just let loose.”
The festivities will feature ’70s and ’80s music from a DJ, a photo booth, a signature Iron-Leg drink and a silent auction. “We’ll have lots of sports memorabilia, memorabilia from the ’70s and ’80s and really something for everyone at
the auction,” Laukhuff commented. People are encouraged to come in their best ’70s and ’80s costumes, and a costume contest will be held. “We’ll award prizes for the best male, best female and best couple,” Laukhuff noted.
Proceeds from the party will benefit Iron-Leg Corp., a Lancasterbased nonprofit organization that raises funds for children in need of prosthetics. The organization was started by Matt Millhouse and Laukhuff, who were looking for a way to give back to the community when they realized they could raise funds for a cause close to home. Millhouse’s son, Parker, was born without a right leg, so Millhouse and Laukhuff created Iron-Leg in 2020, named in Parker’s honor. The organization has a mission of not only paying for high-end prosthetics for children and youths age 18 and
younger, but also making sure recipients receive therapy to learn how to use them. Iron-Leg has helped children in Lancaster and York counties, raising thousands of dollars. Each prosthetic can cost between $5,000 and $50,000.
Last year’s dance party, held at The Village Nightclub, raised close to $10,000, a goal Laukhuff hopes to meet again this year. Additional fundraisers for the organization include a golf tournament and a car show.
Laukhuff noted that Iron-Leg is looking for board members who have a passion for making a difference in a child’s life. “If you have a heart for community and a desire to give back, we’d love to talk to you,” he said.
In the meantime, he hopes to draw a good crowd to the dance party, adding, “It’s winter, and
we’ve all been cooped up inside. Get out of the house and come to a party.”
The dance party is for people age 21 and older. Tickets may be purchased for a discount by using a QR code found on Iron-Leg’s Facebook page. Tickets will also be available the door. For more information, visit www.ironleg.org.
Gallery Posts Irish-Inspired Arts Events
The Square Halo Gallery within The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, will host an Irish-inspired show in March and April.
The spring exhibit will feature printmaking from Lancaster
County illustrator, graphic designer and curator Ned Bustard. His two new books are “Saint Patrick the Forgiver,” a children’s book published Feb. 21, and “33: Reflections on the Gospel of Saint John,” a book of Irish poetry with art inspired by the well-known “Book of Kells,” a manuscript Gospel book in Latin.
On First Friday, March 3, a book release party for “Saint Patrick the Forgiver” will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery. The story highlights Patrick, a bishop of Ireland who was not actually Irish. Combining Patrick’s words from his Confessions with a few of the legends
about him, the retelling teaches families about the life of the real saint and helps them discover a story of love and forgiveness along the way.
The Row House will host a lecture on St. Patrick at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 17. Graham Dennis will share a tale that challenges many assumptions about Patrick. Tickets may be purchased at a discounted price in advance or full price at the door. Row House members plus one guest will be admitted for free. For tickets and more details, visit www.therow house.org.
In May, the gallery will welcome
select student artists from Messiah University, and the summer show will focus on the art of Sandra Bowden, a pioneer in the art and faith movement of the past several decades.
Square Halo Gallery is a space for contemporary art inspired by the Christian faith. Part of the Lancaster City Art Galleries & Museums, the gallery changes its exhibits every other month. The gallery is open from 6 to 9 p.m. on First Fridays, by appointment and during events at The Trust. To learn more, visit www.squarehalobooks.com or search for @squarehalogallery on Instagram.

Cameron is well-known for his part in the sitcom “Growing Pains” and for several family-focused films. Most recently, Cameron’s “American Campfire Revival” has encouraged the family of faith to embrace principles that may bring blessing to America.
Feucht is a worship leader, author, and missionary. “When it comes to the church, few voices have been as loud in calling God’s people to engage the culture and redeem it for Christ,” said Stone.
“It all ties together,” said Becker of the three speakers. “The mission of the Remem-
ber America Speaker Series is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles. We felt that a three-strand cord is one we wanted to illuminate … to bring people together.”
Dayspring senior Caroline Hostetter of Pequea Township will also present her winning oratory, “America: A Legacy of Honor and Liberty,” at the banquet.

City Introduces Service Request Platform
The City of Lancaster publicly introduced Fix It! Lancaster, its new citizen service request platform. Fix It! Lancaster aims to improve the customer service experience for city residents, increase transparency, and help the City of Lancaster make better data-informed decisions.
With Fix It! Lancaster, residents can submit their non-emergency service requests, receive updates as the problem is addressed, and be notified when the issue is resolved. Using Fix It! Lancaster’s built-in automation,
residents can use a central reporting mechanism to report assorted service requests and have those requests routed to the appropriate department or bureau. The city can also follow up with residents who choose to include their cell phone number or email address with their request.
Fix It! Lancaster is available at https://fixit.cityoflancasterpa.gov and as iOS and Android apps. Residents may also contact Fix It! Lancaster by texting 717-716-7108 or emailing fixit@cityoflancasterpa.gov.
