Opening Concert To Focus On “Rhapsody In Blue” Piano Soloist Will Be Featured

everal years ago, Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, considered doing a concert featuring George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” as transcribed for wind band. The catch was that Laudermilch wanted the featured pianist to be his friend and fellow musician Dr. Ronald Matthews. “We have played together,” said Laudermilch. “I know him personally, and I have always admired his playing.” The concert was planned for the spring of 2021, but COVID-19 restrictions interfered. “I can’t think of anyone else I want to (present this piece) with,” said Laudermilch. “I thought I would try one more time.” Laudermilch’s efforts appear to have paid off. The New Holland Band will present “A Rhapsody in Blue” as its opening concert of 2022 at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, March 6, at 3 p.m. Laudermilch has planned the concert to include Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture,”

“Our heart is for the whole family,” said Cindy Metcalf, half of the ministry team of Drew and Cindy Metcalf. “We have always been We Help Children, but one of the best ways to help children is to help the mom and dad to be that solid support system.” The Metcalfs and their children have spent the last decade in Guatemala training staff in orphanages. Gemma Pasewicz, communications director at Resurrection Catholic School (RCS), believes that most of the parishes that now send their children to Resurrection once each had their own schools. Haydn Wood’s “Mannin Veen,” Mark Camphouse’s “Foundation,” and “Be Still My Soul, played to the melody of “Finlandia.” Laudermilch has planned three marches for the event: John Philip Sousa’s “With Pleasure” and “Stars and Stripes Forever,” along with “The Purple Pageant March” by Karl L. King. Matthews is a Philadelphia native, a world-class pianist and the president of Eastern University. He began his classical piano studies at age 4. He completed his undergraduate degree in church music and organ at Westminster Choir College and his Master of Music in choral conducting from Temple University. He did his doctoral work at Combs College of Music in composition. He has conducted, recorded, and performed throughout Europe, as well as in Israel and at the Vatican. The concert is free for students through 12th grade or age 18. There is a cost for adults to attend. Readers may purchase tickets at www.newhollandband.org or by calling 717-355-5096. In Guatemala, strict shutdowns made it hard for people to obtain food, and opinions of the COVID-19 restrictions in the U.S. changed the way missionaries were viewed. “If you had white skin, you were suspect of bringing the virus (to Guatemala),” explained Drew. “It was a huge shift (from the

previous benevolent view).” In response, the ministry began to offer a monthlong online training course to people in different countries. “We trained indigenous people in third-world countries to help people in their own country,” explained Drew. The Metcalfs noted that benefits of the online program included people working in their own countries where they understood the culture and did not deal with language barriers. In June of 2021, the Metcalfs heard the Lord encouraging them to return to the U.S. Thinking they were just going for a visit with friends and relatives, they soon traveled to East Earl. “By July 2021, it was clear to us (that the Lord wanted us) to live here,” said Drew. “Doors for the ministry just flew open.” In August 2021, the Metcalfs received a call from a board member of The Haft, a ministry set on a 105-acre converted sheep farm in Bradford County. The Haft was founded in 1958 by a former college professor and his wife, who sought a place to help

students heal from traumatic experiences. The Haft later became a place to overcome and heal from addictions. “It was an intensive discipleship program,” said Cindy, who noted that the center was about 85% self-sufficient in producing its own food. More than a decade ago, The Haft became a retreat center, which offered space to sleep 22 in a converted barn. When the Metcalfs received the call, they were offered an invitation to live on the farm and provide ministry to hurting families. The Metcalfs spent a few months of restoration and acquainting their children with the local culture. By November 2021, The Haft had opened as a family restoration center, with for-

mer Eastern Mennonite Missions workers Galen and Phyllis Groff providing marriage mentoring services. Several families have visited with stays ranging from a weekend to weeks. “People come for family wholeness programs,” explained Drew. Cindy added that intensive counseling is part of the process of helping families to develop healthy behaviors and bonds. Therapy animals on the farm include goats, chickens, guinea hens, and a black Labrador retriever. The grounds feature a 10acre pond for kayaks, canoes, and fishing, as well as trails for hiking. More information about the Metcalfs’ ministry at The Haft may be found by visiting www.family-refresh.com or by calling 570-363-2189.

Mukhammed Karayev made it three in a row with a forfeit win at 285 and Trent Ruble closed out the match and the win with CV’s final pinfall win at 113. SWIMMING The swimming team made their way to Wilson High School’s Roy G. Snyder Natatorium on February 11th and 12th for the two-day L-L Championship Meet. With few swimmers, the Buckskins did not do well in the team title chase where the boy’s finished 7th and the girls 11th but CV did enjoy a few podium performances. The quartet of Connor Ludwig, Ashton Reese, Aiden Campbell, and Daniel Ivanchikov claimed sixth place in both the 200-freestyle relay and the 400-freestyle relay. Ivanchikov also made two solo trips to the medal podium, once for his fifth-place finish in the 100-butterfly and again for his fourth-place finish in the 500-freestyle. Jordan Holmes secured CV ’s only other medal, taking fifth in the girl’s 100-backstroke. Holmes also took part in the 100-freestyle, finishing 12th. Ludwig and Campbell enjoyed two other top 20 finishes each with Campbell earning his in the 200IM (16th) and 100breaststroke (14th) while Ludwig took part in the 100freestyle (18th) and 200freestyle (16th). Reese added a 22nd place finish in the boy’s 100-backstroke while Cheyenne Plank gave the Lady Buckskins a 24th place in the 200IM to round out the L-L performers.

One night later the Lady Buckskins attempted the same feat but fell short in their tangle with Garden Spot, dropping a 57-39 final to finish the 2021-2022 season at 8-13. Taylor Hehnly posted a team high 11-points in the loss, but it was not enough to overcome Spot’s scoring edge in three of the four quarters. RIFLE The rifle team closed out their 2021-2022 season on February 12th when they hosted the L-L Individual Championship. Just one Buckskin, Edison Stauffer, cracked the top 20, finishing 17th with 197 and three centers. WRESTLING The wrestling team is not finished with their 2021-2022 season entirely, but the Buckskins did wrap up their regular season on February 10th with a 39-30 win over Daniel Boone. Luke Morley kicked off the match with a forfeit win, but Daniel Boone claimed four of the next five and five of the next six bouts. That gave the Blazers a 30-15 lead with just five weight classes remaining. Keaton Fischer (145) and Abdoul Akala (160) were the two grapplers that broke up Boone’s run, adding to Morley’s six team points with a decision and pinfall, respectively. Jonathan Lopez got CV rolling with his first period fall

Padua. The church also serves families from St. Catherine of Siena, St. Philip the Apostle, and St. Richards Church. In addition, RCS educates children from families looking for a Christ-centered environment. Currently, 116 pre-kindergartens through eighth-graders attend the school. In 2021, the school celebrated 30 years of existence, but COVID-19 restrictions interfered with the festivities. “We had our 30th anniversary Mass in November,” said Pasewicz, who noted that Bishop Ronald W. Gainer of the Diocese of Harrisburg was in attendance. “Every month (in 2022) the Parent Teacher Organization is doing something special for the students because during 2021 we couldn’t do a lot of in-person events to celebrate,” noted Pasewicz, who is working on planning an anniversary reception during the coming year as well. Currently, the school is offering a trial run to parents who would like their children to experience a Catholic education tuition-free. The trial run began Feb. 7 and will continue through Wednesday, June 8. “It’s to give families an idea what Catholic education can be like,” said Pasewicz, who went on to discuss what she sees as the

many benefits of attending. “We have small class sizes, so there’s more one-to-one time with the teacher. We are one-to-one with technology, which is really exciting,” Pasewicz added, explaining that students in first through eighth grades receive Chromebooks. She also lauded the atmosphere of the school. “It’s very close knit and family-oriented,” she said. “We have tons of siblings that come to school together.” Although most of the students are from within the boundaries of Lancaster, Pasewicz said students often travel from Manheim Township, Penn Manor, LampeterStrasburg, and even Solanco school districts to attend. Pasewicz said that the school strives to provide funding for students who may lack the resources to attend. “We try to make it affordable for anyone,” she said, noting that the school is starting an Angel Sponsor program, which allows businesses and individuals to donate to a student’s tuition. “We try really hard to make it so anyone who wants to come here is able,” she said. The book focuses on a carousel placed in Rocky Springs Park, a few miles south of Lancaster, by Gustav Dentzel in 1899. When the park closed, the carousel was operated at Lake Lansing Park in Michigan and later at Dollywood in Tennessee. In 1999, the carousel was returned to Lancaster and purchased for $1.3 million, all private donations raised by the Rocky Springs Carousel Association. The book’s 234 pages include photos of 14 animals on the Rocky Springs Carousel that were professionally restored between 2005 and 2008. Other than a dog and a rooster, which were put on display for a short time, the animals have not been seen by the public since their restoration. At the author event, Gregg will discuss the production of the book, host a question-andanswer session, and show rare footage of the carousel in operation. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the end of the program, and cash is required for payment. There is no charge to attend the event. Truist has become a key partner in the YMCA’s work to improve the lives of everyone in the York and Lancaster communities, especially newcomers to the area and those experiencing financial insecurity. The current partnership between the YMCA of the Roses and Truist began in 2021 with a $10,000 grant to the YMCA’s New American Welcome Center, which works with immigrants and newcomers in York and Lancaster counties to give them the support and resources they need to thrive in their new homes.

The partnership is continuing in 2022 by way of Truist’s $50,000 donation through the Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) to the YMCA’s New American Welcome Center to empower all individuals facing financial hardships. In addition, leadership from Truist is serving on the YMCA’s Diversity, Inclusion and Globalization Committee to ensure the YMCA’s policies and operations are inclusive and welcoming for all. Truist’s team is working with the YMCA’s staff to conduct workshops on relevant topics, including virtual banking,

YMCA branches across York and Lancaster counties will host these workshops for newcomers, older adults and general community members free of charge. HMS Slates “Pollyanna” Middle school students from Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS), 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, will present “Pollyanna” on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26. A dinner theater will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 25, and additional performances of “Pollyanna” will take place at 2 and 7 p.m. on Feb. 26. This classic story by Eleanor Porter invites audiences to join Pollyanna, an orphan facing formidable circumstances in a town full of pessimists, into her “glad game.” Pollyanna takes the words of her father to heart - that a person can find something good about anything that happens and in the process changes the perspective of her neighbors and her domineering Aunt Polly. The show is directed by Becky Degan, who also led the recent HMS productions of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” “Twain’s Tales,” and “Anne of Green Gables,” as well as the Acting Club in 2021. Degan is the associate pastor of worship and Christian education at Forest Hills Mennonite Church in Leola. All middle school students are participating in the production in some way, whether on stage or behind the scenes. Students handle sound and lighting with support from HMS parents; gather, organize, and prepare props; handle promotions; and provide service at the dinner theater. The students and director are supported by current and former parents, faculty, and staff, whose tasks include backstage management, prop and set design and creation, student logistics, sound and lighting oversight, and meal preparation. HMS has offered drama productions to the local community since 1988. For details and reservations, call 717354-7100 or visit www.hinkletown school.org/events/drama. For the Friday dinner theater, separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for children age 4 through grade eight; admission is free for children age 3 and under. There is a general admission price for the Saturday performances.
