Breaking Down Barriers - GOTR Adapts For Safety And Flexibility Program For Girls Seeks Coaches BY ANN MEAD ASH
arrie Johnson, executive director with Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, wants to make it clear that the program is open to all girls in the age groups it serves. “Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional. We want to remove those so that any girl can benefit.” In accordance with that goal, the spring 2021 program has been changed to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. “We’ve adapted our program to make it totally safe and flexible for girls and coaches,” explained program director Jennifer West, who noted that the organization allows participants to connect with their friends in person or virtually. A new virtual curriculum was written to match in-person lessons, and the program has eliminated shared materials by providing each girl with her own journals, hand sanitizer, and a cinch sack for storage. social distancing in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are followed. Team members meet in person when they can, at their school if possible, or in parks, at churches, or in community buildings. West explained that if schools close, a virtual practice can be held, with the lesson presented virtually. West stated that what has not changed is the lesson content. GOTR’s goals are to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls. “They still get the same great lessons about practicing empathy and standing up for themselves and others, and we still take part in a community impact project,” shared West. GOTR staff members are looking for places for students to meet and are also seeking volunteer team coaches, which are essential to the program. “It’s a unique mentoring opportunity,” said Johnson, who added that the girls who participate are not the only ones who benefit. “It changes a coach’s life,” she noted.
Girls on the Run Lancaster is unveiling a spring curriculum that can be used virtually or in person. Coaches are needed to help girls benefit from this developmental program.

Amazing Archer To Speak At Sportsman Dinner
BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
Painting parties - events in which instructors walk participants through the steps of creating specific images - have become popular within the last decade. The classes are a safe way to be adventurous. For people who want to push themselves further, flow painting, also called fluid art, may be the next step. As the name suggests, flow painting involves acrylic paint mixed with Floetrol and applied to a canvas by pouring, rather than a brush. In the United States, Floetrol is a See Flow Painting pg 3

World-class archer Matt Stutzman will speak at the Restart Training Center Ministry sportsman banquets in East Earl on March 23 and 24.
Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), first heard of Matt Stutzman from Matt’s cousin, Steve Stutzman. “(Steve) said, ‘Maybe you should have my cousin who is a professional archer (speak at your sportsman banquet). He was born without arms.’” Santiago was stunned. “I was like, ‘ W hat?’” recalled Santiago. Now, having heard Matt speak at a previous RTCM banquet, Santiago has invited the award-winning archer back for the 2021 events.

Plans call for Lancaster Catholic High School to build a new STEM center (left photo) and performing arts center (right photo). BY ANN MEAD ASH
As Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) prepares to start construction on a new STEM Innovation Center, Phase 1A of the largest remodel effort in the school’s more than 90-year history, school president Tim Hamer is looking forward to equipping the building to match the curriculum. “The once-in-alifetime rebuilding was informed by what we need to do to teach what we want to teach,” said Hamer. LCHS chose Marotta/Main Architects to design the remodel after holding a competition. “The beauty of this (plan) is the efficiency of being within the existing footprint of the school,” said Hamer. “We are repurposing

within the footprint of the school.” Hamer noted that a triangular courtyard that exists where the three wings of the school join together will be filled in and connected to the school library. “That is where the cafeteria and Student Commons will be moved so we can make room for the auditorium.” Through its Cherish - Love Honor campaign, LCHS has raised nearly $9 million of the initial $12 million needed for the renovations. Hamer emphasized that no funds will be borrowed for the project. “This (plan) is far less expensive than the alternatives, and it allows for a better flow and use of space,” he said, noting that the present building represents eras of construction that were decades apart. “This is a way to meld them together. It’s very exciting.” To learn more about the building campaign, readers may visit www.cherishlove honor.com.

entire curriculum simultaneously with the strategic plan,” said Hamer, who noted that LCHS will equip the center based on a STEM curriculum designed by leading educators called Project Lead the Way. “These are experientially based curricula for biomedicine, computer science, and engineering,” he said. The STEM Innovation Center, which will replace the third floor of Riley Hall, is slated to be under construction before students leave school in May. The new auditorium, which will replace the 1929 gym currently being used for presentations, and the Student Commons and dining area, which will replace the cafeteria built in 1974, will be Phase 1B, with construction scheduled for the summer of 2022. “We will be using the space that is now the cafeteria, which has no floor over it,” said Hamer. “We will build the auditorium there because we can go up and stay

mately, though, people just need to take the plunge. “Be patient, and don’t necessarily have expectations for what you want your final design to look like,” Werner advised. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with techniques, pouring mediums, paints, and colors. There’s a lot out there to use, and a lot to learn. You just have to find what works best for you.”

home, Werner watched YouTube videos to learn more. “I really like the fluidity of the technique,” Werner commented. “It isn’t a style of art that requires detail and is required to look like something. I like the uniqueness and that I don’t have to really think about it once I pour the paint onto the canvas. The most challenging parts are getting the paint to be the right consistency, knowing how much paint I’ll need, and deciding what colors to use.” Pre-mixed paints can be purchased at craft stores, or artists, like Werner, can mix their own. Canvases can always be reused, but their numbers can soar if artists like the finished products. Werner began to experience that latter phenomenon, so she started looking for homes for her art. She also found another way to be creative with the paint itself. “I had so much dried leftover paint in the bottom of the containers I was using to pour over (canvases) that looked kind of neat on its own, so I decided to start making smaller things like keychains and magnets,” Werner said. For households looking for a creative outlet during yucky days this winter, fluid art may fit the bill. Adult supervision is required for using heat guns to remove bubbles from paint. Some fluid artists on YouTube and Facebook have also combined spray paint and fire, which should only be performed with adults watching closely and fire extinguishers located nearby. “Picking the colors, maybe stirring the paint, and moving the paint around on the canvas would be something the kids could do,” Werner stated. “Depending on the age and dexterity of the kids, they could probably handle the paint themselves, but for safety and preventing a mess, an adult would be better suited to handle the paint.” Werner’s favorite resources for fluid art ideas, coaching, and support include the Facebook groups and pages Acrylic Pouring Addiction, Fluid Art Studios, and Jerry’s Artarama; tutorials by Netherlands artist Rinske Douna; and the book “Get Started in Paint Pouring” by Nicky James Burch. Lady Bucks Play Four Times in One Week
BY LEAH SINTIC
In a final push to make up for lost time, CV girls have given their all to an intense end of season schedule, competing against Penn Manor, Solanco and a double dose of Ephrata all within a week. On Wednesday, the Lady Bucks hosted Solanco and despite a strong 17-13 start, the Mules tied things up at 26 at the half before pulling away, handing the Bucks a 53-36 loss. Taylor Hehnly, a junior, scored nine of her gamehigh 16 points in the first quarter to give CV an early boost, but the Mules second half defense proved to be stifling as they extended their lead as time expired. Both meetings against Ephrata went to the Mountaineers with final scores of 61-30 on February 13th, and 50-20 just three days later. While hosting the teams’ first clash, Rebecca Hartranft paced the Buckskin offense, netting 13 points, with Hehnly chipping in eight.
During the subsequent trip to Ephrata, Hehnly took a turn at the helm to lead the Bucks with nine and Ashley Cirilo added six. For the Mountaineers, the outcome of those two games pushed them that much closer to a Section Title, guaranteeing them at least a piece of the title in Section Two. While the title will remain out of reach for the Buckskins, they continue to have an impact on who will receive it as they will also go head-to-head with Section Two’s other frontrunner, Elizabethtown, in an unprecedented double header. In a February 11th trip to Penn Manor, the Comets handed the Bucks a 58-30 defeat, where Hehnly again gave CV its biggest offensive push, collecting 14 points including a four-for-four showing at the line. Amidst the hectic schedule and intense competition, the Bucks took a moment to pause and recognize their senior teammates at home on the 13th, honoring Ashley Andrew, Destiny Ellerbe, and
Alexis Goldsborough for their contributions to the team. WRESTLING Five CV wrestlers earned spots to compete at the L-L League Wrestling Championships held at Manheim Township on February 13th, and celebrated success in multiple divisions. Keaton Fischer fought his way through the 138-pound bracket all the way to the final match, where he placed second after losing by major decision to division champion Griffin Gonzalez of Lebanon. Prior to the championship bout, Fischer had to power past Garden Spot’s Jeremy Schilling with a 10-4 decision win, as well as a 7-5 decision over defending champion Ronnie Fulton of Solanco in the semifinal round. Nate Kirchner made quite a statement in the 172-pound division, earning a third-place finish, well-exceeding his eighth placed seed entering the competition. Kirchner was forced to face eventual champion Andrew Voglebacher of McCaskey in his opening bout, but after an initial loss, he rallied his way back through the consolation bracket with three consecutive wins, overcoming Joel Grillo of Donegal, Turk Baum of Cocalico, and Liam Feister of Lampeter-Strasburg by decision in the thirdplace showdown for a wellearned spot on the podium. “Our staff was extremely happy to see his hard work pay off and his confidence rise with each win,” celebrated head coach Trent Turner. Trent Ruble also garnered a third-place finish for his effort in the 106-pound class. Ruble kicked off his day with a 5-0 deci-
sion over Liam McGinley of Pequea Valley but was knocked back by a semifinal defeat dished out by Kaedyn Williams of Township who would go on to claim the title. Ruble regained his footing with a pair of wins over Marco Tocci of Warwick and Owen Lehman of Northern Lebanon to claim the third-place victory. Accompanying the trio of placewinners at the event was Luke Needham wrestling at 145 pounds and Josue Marente at 215. “We’re proud of the accomplishments of each of these wrestlers in making it into the tournament,” acknowledged Turner. “Collectively, they helped us finish eighth out of 23 teams.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Bucks cashed in on the long-distance shot in a 68-59 win over Penn Manor on February 11th, netting 11 three-point baskets to account for nearly half of their points. Austin Wertz knocked down five of those downtown buckets to lead CV scoring alongside Luke Rumbaugh with 17 points apiece. Three-out-of-four quarters only held a one-point differential between the two teams, with the Bucks edging ahead in each of them, making the second quarter a game-altering one in which the Bucks surged ahead on a 16-10 run to create a seven-point cushion (33-26) headed into the second half. The Bucks also visited the line 22 times in the contest, converting 13 points in free throws. Cooper McCloud added 10 points with a fourth CV athlete nearing double digits as Kyle Thrush chipped in nine. Two days later the club fell just

short in a 63-59 loss to Cedar Crest, where once again Wertz (19 points) and Rumbaugh (17 points), took advantage of the three-point line, nailing six of the Buck’s nine three-point baskets. RIFLE With sports across the board scrambling to squeeze as much competition out of the final weeks of the regular season, CV rifle was no exception, facing Wilson and Governor Mifflin two times each as the season raced to its conclusion. Governor Mifflin gained the edge in both of their meetings but split results with Wilson, gave CV their second win of the season, a 494-492 victory on February 11. Wyatt Stauffer and Sierra Land led the successful effort
with a pair of 100s. Grady Ray and Adam Zook each nailed a 99, and Sovannary Sok’s 96 was enough to propel the Bucks to the two-point triumph. Wilson took a turn going ahead, claiming the other half of the double header, 492-486. Stauffer shot another 100 to lead CV’s efforts, followed by Lucas Gomez and Edison Stauffer with a pair of 97s. Moving on to the League Individuals Tournament on February 12th, it was E. Stauffer who produced the Buckskins best score, a 198 with two centers to capture 10th place. Land’s 197 with two centers earned her a 16th place finish, and Ray (197, 0 centers) claimed 18th place at the tournament which featured 48 sharpshooters.

GOTR from pg 1 West pointed out that coaches need not be runners. “Men, women, college students, and high school students (can be coaches),” said West, who added that having a heart to help girls grow up with self-esteem is key. “You have to have a desire to help the girls and have meaningful conversations,” explained West. “Be a positive role model, be silly, and play fun games - that’s what our coaches do.” West added that training materials for volunteer coaches are online and self-paced. “We provide the curriculum, all the materials, and support to get them set up for a successful season,” she stated. COVID-19 restrictions have put a damper on many group activities. However, Brownstown’s Boy Scouts of America Pack 82, Troop 82, and Crew 82 refused to give up their actitivies entirely. Instead, the group found safe ways to stay active during 2020. “‘Scout On’ has been an informal charge for us,” said Erin Blank, Scoutmaster of Scouts BSA Troop 82. “Now we are reaping the benefits of doing exactly that, and our kids are leading the way through these tough times. This could not happen without the invested support and enthusiasm from all of our participating families.” Weekly Zoom meetings for both the pack and the troop kept the Scouts in touch. The pack also met monthly at West Earl Lions Park, and the Crew holds two Zoom meetings per month. “Pack 82 worked with chartering organization West Earl Lions to secure new facilities in the local area to continue to meet together,” said Blank. During the summer, a COVID safety policy was adopted to allow Scouts to hold in-person activities. This resulted in meeting at the West Earl Township Municipal Building for a brief time. In summer, when Lancaster County went into the green zone, an Arrow of Light ceremony for seven Cubs and Courts of Honor for 20 Scouts and 12 Venturers were held. Additional activities included a visit to the West Earl Police and a campout in West Earl Lions
Club Park for about a half dozen Cub families. The troop took several camping trips to places like Susquehannock State Park and Gettysburg’s Daniel Lady Farm. Venture Crew 82 also navigated a 50-mile canoe trip from Selinsgrove to Harrisburg, camping on islands along the way. In November 2020, the Cubs and Scouts worked to collect more than 10,000 pounds of food for Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services and a New Holland area food pantry as part of Scouting for Food. Assistant Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout Bart Eckhardt had the idea to have Scouts earn an Emergency Preparation Merit Badge during COVID. On a foggy day in December 2020, nine young women ages 11 through 17 performed a Conestoga River rescue drill using a 200-pound safety dummy. They extracted the body from the water and practiced a number of emergency scenarios. “It became (important) to look at how we handle the unknowns in our lives,” recalled Blank. “Our three older Scouts - a lifeguard, an EMT, and a Scout camp leader - stepped in to mentor the younger Scouts through the process, while adult leaders worked as dispatch responders, bystanders, and helpful observers,” said Blank. Pack 82 went from 13 members to 32 youths in a very short time and is always welcoming more. Readers who would like more information on the group may visit https://BSA82.org or email Scoutmaster@BSA82.org.

Rec Center To Offer MS Challenge Training nizers to cancel. “MS is a time bomb,” said Stephen. “You never know when the next relapse will come.” Uncomfortable with waiting for the 2021 event, Stephen found a virtual platform that allowed him to realize his goal with help from his long-distance swimming coach, Louise Hyder-Darlington, and his father, who drove along on the bicycle route and biked beside his son during the run. Glaus now works with individuals one-on-one to implement the MS Fitness Challenge. “If someone has lower leg weakness, we have the participant hold each contraction for six seconds,” explained Glaus. “You are giving the brain the opportunity to develop a new pathway to do the same movement.” He also works with clients on nutrition, which he noted is essential to succesfully living with MS. Readers who are interested in working with Glaus may call 717-626-5096, ext. 239, or email Simon Ababou@lititzrec.com.

Stephen Glaus, who began offering individual 12-week training sessions in the MS Fitness Challenge at the Lititz recCenter in January, is living proof that the program, which utilizes focused exercise and nutrition, can have positive results. In 2018, Stephen experienced significant mobility impairment and blurred and double vision from multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that causes nerve damage and interferes with communication from the brain to the body. In the fall of 2020, he completed a virtual Ironman - swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles from Reading to Marietta, and running 26.2 miles. Stephen’s journey with MS began in July 2018. At the age of 27, the Elizabethtown native was working in his dream job as a drone salesman in California. “On a business trip to Japan, my left foot went completely numb,” he recalled. Three weeks later, Stephen had lost the ability to walk unaided, and he was dealing with other complications. Realizing his life would
change dramatically, Stephen left his job in California, and he and his wife, Nikki, returned to Elizabethtown. Characterizing himself as “stubborn,” Stephen refused to accept the doctor’s predictions that he would be using a wheelchair in two years. Instead, he began researching resources and came across the book “David’s Goliath” by David Lyons, which outlines the MS Fitness Challenge. Stephen connected with Lyons, who founded the MS Fitness Challenge organization, and Lyons began coaching Stephen. He also made dietary recommendations. As the two men became acquainted, Lyons felt that Stephen would be an asset to the organization. “I jumped aboard,” said Stephen who began studying for his personal trainer license, which he received from the National Federation of Personal Trainers in March of 2019. Stephen’s health slowly improved, and he began thinking about doing a full Ironman triathlon. He met a former Navy SEAL, with whom he shared his Ironman dream. “I didn’t know how to swim, so once a week he got in the pool with me and taught me to swim,” said Stephen. Soon a 3-mile swim was no problem. Weeks before Stephen was to complete his full Ironman, he learned that COVID-19 restrictions had forced orga-
