In 2018, Lititz resident Jennifer Martin began sharing her testimony in local churches. At New Life Fellowship in Ephrata, her testimony was recorded, and her parents, Jay and Rosene Hurst, showed the tape to their friends Drew and Cindy Metcalf, founders of We Help Children, a ministry with workers in several locations, including the Guatemala and the U.S. The organization works with children in orphanages and trains workers who serve in orphanages, among other efforts on behalf of traumatized children. Drew and Cindy immediately noticed a correlation between Jennifer’s testimony and the children they help. They See We Help Children pg 2

Coterie Club Computers from pg 1 Plans Luncheon limited incomes, buying computers was benefited just individuals who received ESL tutoring services at AOCC. Then, Church not an option for them. The Coterie Club of Lancaster will host a luncheon on Thursday, March 12, at The General Sutter Inn, 14 E. Main St., Lititz, at 11:30 a.m. Guest speaker Gregory Scott will present “Early American Lancaster Architecture.” Women are invited to attend. For details, call Carol at 717-898-2838.
In 2017, Gingrich’s acquaintance Stu Metzler, who is comfortable refurbishing computers, picked up 10 computers from a Philadelphia law firm that had upgraded their devices. Metzler upgraded the computers to Windows 10, and Gingrich matched them with his students. “And that’s how we got started,” Gingrich said. The new ministry of AOCC is called Computers for Refugees. Initially, the program
World Service’s Lancaster division began referring clients. Computers for Refugees has also assisted individuals recommended by Intermediate Unit 13’s Refugee Center, Millersville University’s Migrant Education Program, the Literacy Council of LancasterLebanon, and the International Healthcare Professionals Program in Lancaster. Gingrich also provided information about the initiative to a consortium of ESL programs in Lancaster County.

In the summer of 2018, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) donated 60 desktops, so Gingrich reached out to RiversEdge Ministry Center to store the computers. Metzler taught Gingrich how to upgrade the systems, and, along with other volunteers, the two men began the process of preparing the computers for their new owners. Additional computers and peripherals have been donated since then. In 2019, Computers for Refugees gave away 96 desktops, 130 laptops, five tablets, and 11 printers. In January this year, 16 desktops, four laptops, and two printers found new homes. Several of the items went to Bethel AME Church, which is opening an after-school tutoring program. The Lenovo desktop computers, mice, and keyboards were donated by the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster, and the Lenovo monitors were passed on by a pharmaceutical company. “It was so special to give (Bethel AME) complete systems,” Gingrich remarked. Gingrich created a simple application for people who desire to receive a computer. Recipients have included Nepali and Somali refugees, as well as Cuban doctors whose credentials did not transfer to the United States, so they have been working in warehouses. “Some families have been here quite a while, but they still have basic needs,” Gingrich said.
Past ESL students have been giving back through helping with updates, delivery, or even donations. “It’s neat to see it come full circle,” Gingrich commented. Gingrich’s dream for Computers for Refugees would be to have church youth groups or other organizations with computer-savvy members volunteer to train recipients in using their computers. “Welcoming refugees is an opportunity to build relationships,” he said. “They’re excited about the opportunities to learn, study, and get ahead.” Computers for Refugees welcomes donations of Windows 8 and newer desktops and laptops, flat-screen monitors, speakers, and USB mice and keyboards. Newer Apple products will also be accepted. Readers may email dgingrichesl@gmail.com to schedule a delivery or to volunteer. Cash donations for the purchase of desktop WiFi adapters, laptop batteries, memory chips, and other supplies may be made by visiting http://alphayomega.us/. music and opera will be part of the mix. “(The concert) will be stylistically diverse,” said Thorlakson. “There will be some musical theater and art song.” The musicians said to expect up to eight numbers including piano and clarinet duets, piano and voice, and piano and voice and clarinet. Thorlakson credited Dorothy Rose Smith with building the musical program at Highland. “When she passed away, the people at Highland decided to start a concert series,” he said, noting that the series is supported by a number of patrons. He believes the tradition of kicking off with a fall organ concert is based on the church’s purchasing a new organ in the fall at about the time the series began. In the case of inclement weather, information about the concert may be found at www.highlandpc.org.

the concert. A freewill offering will be received. Thorlakson, who has been directing at Highland for a few years, was asked by concert organizers if he would put together a concert. “I said, ‘Yes, but I would like to bring some friends along with me,’” he said, noting that he and Hall-Gulati have been friends for quite some time. “Abbigail and Jeffrey are new friends (of mine) because they just came to Lancaster a few weeks ago,” said Thorlakson, who introduced Jeffrey as a new professor at Lancaster Bible College. Jeffrey and Abbigail met at Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute when they were assigned the same opera to study. “… And the rest is history,” said Jeffrey. “Music brought us together.” The group is looking forward to playing together at Highland. “Highland’s acoustics are wonderful,” said Hall-Gulati. Thorlakson echoed her comments, saying that it will be a good venue for the concert, which he called a “potpourri (of music) heavier on the romantic side.” As a pianist, he noted that he will play solos, instrumental duets, accompaniment, and more on the new Steinway D concert grand piano that was recently purchased by Highland following a worship and mission enhancement campaign that raised $400,000. “This will be the first Dorothy Rose Smith Concert that features that piano,” said Thorlakson. In addition to Thorlakson’s piano solos, Hall-Gulati noted that saxophone

Registration has opened for the 27th annual Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) education conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 23. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. Registration will open at 7:45 a.m., and attendees may partake of a continental breakfast while they visit the door prize zone and sponsor tables. “Agents of Change ... Mission POSSIBLE” is this year’s conference theme. “It is the hope that this conference will inspire anyone in the educational community to accept the mission of educating all learners,” said IU13 early childhood and special education services program director Kathy Rose. The keynote speaker embodies that mission. Canadian Shelley Moore is the author of “One Without the Other: Stories of Unity Through Diversity and Inclusion,” which is volume 1 in “Reimagining Inclusion: The ONE Series,” and the owner of “Five Moore Minutes,” a continuing education resource for teachers in which she shares strategies for creating and sustaining inclusive classrooms. Moore’s keynote address is titled “Teaching to Diversity: The Evolution of Inclusion.” “With 21st-century learning, our definition of what is success needs to include more people. We can no longer be striving towards a model where the goal of education is to replicate and duplicate ‘sameness’ in individuals,” Moore said in an
interview about her research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) posted at www.grad.ubc.ca/campus-community/ meet-our-students/moore-shelley. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alberta and a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University. She holds a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council doctoral fellowship at UBC, where she is exploring inclusive education for students with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities in secondary schools. “We need to better understand whether and how meaningful learning of curricula becomes more accessible to all students when students with intellectual and developmental disabilities are included,” Moore explained. “To that end, my research will contribute by investigating how content area and special education teachers can collaborate to create rich learning opportunities for and with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their peers in inclusive classrooms.” In addition to her keynote address, Moore will lead a breakout session on supporting learners from a strengthsbased perspective. Other breakout session topics will include brain development, autism and executive function difficulties, depression and anxiety, trauma awareness and strategies for supporting students with histories of trauma, classroom safety, special education and student services law, bullying, yoga and mindfulness for preschoolers, developing career readiness through esports, and more.

Ruble Finishes Sixth in District Championship by Leah Sintic

The Buckskins’ Jonathan Lopez mixes it up with Gettysburg’s Dylan Reinert during a 170-pound, preliminary-round bout at the South Central AAA Regional competition at Spring Grove High School on February 21.
(126), and Dylan Rider (113). “All of our wrestlers were firsttime qualifiers so clearly they’ve learned from past failures in order to successfully achieve a longer post season run this year,” explained Turner. Of the seven Buckskin grapplers, only Ruble ranked high enough to be a place winner, but with the majority of the squad returning next season, the future of CV wrestling is bright. “District III is one of the most competitive wrestling districts in PA, so our boys were wrestling amongst some of the best. We’re proud of all of them,” Turner concluded.
BOWLING Three CV bowlers extended their season with an appearance at the District Singles Championships, with junior Robbie Jack having the best run, coming in fifth place in the boys competition held at Clearview Lanes, February 22. Jack advanced to the match play round where he narrowly succumbed to Kolby Bennet of Cedar Crest 201-196 to complete his journey. Haley Jack, a freshman, and Annabel Whitton, a junior, represented the girls, finishing in 27th and 28th place respectively. Next up for the trio is Regional competition.
Sophomore Trent Ruble wrapped up a breakout season, placing sixth in the 106-weight class on his trip to the District III Championships, February 21 and 22 at Spring Grove. “Trent went from unranked district wrestler to Sectional Champion and sixth in the district,” pointed out head coach Trent Turner. “That’s what you like to see as a coach. I think that he’ll grow from the experience.” Ruble’s trip through the 106pound bracket included a 6-0 decision win over Austin Reiff of Lampeter-Strasburg and a 3-2 win over Luke Mentzer of Chambersburg, before taking a setback from, eventual champion Matt Repos of Central Dauphin, 18-1, in the semifinal round. With this being only Ruble’s sophomore year, the potential for growth is exciting for him and the team. Josue Marente, wrestling at 195 pounds, got knocked into the consolation bracket by an early round loss to Garrett Blake of Donegal, but retaliated with a 7-5 decision win of his own over Camden Rice of Spring Grove. His season ended with a 2-0 loss to Robert Utz of South Western. Leo Marente’s tournament followed a similar course in the 220pound bracket, with his best bout coming in the consolation round where he pinned CD East opponent, Travis Armstrong. L. Marente’s next battle was a back-and-forth one, in which Layton Schmick of Carlisle narrowly came out on top in a 9-8 decision.
