Hurricane Smith To Ride Again BY ANN MEAD ASH

ack in March of 2020, Dara Slater, director of that year’s play at Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, “Hurricane Smith and the Garden of the Golden Monkey” by Tim Kelly, was in the final stages of rehearsal. “The set was finished, and the props were ready,” said Slater, whose hopes for the show were dashed when school was closed on March 13, 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions. “We put it all away.” The props, costumes, and set remained in storage until early this year, when Slater held auditions for the 2022 spring show. After two years without a theater program at the middle school, Slater was apprehensive, but the students who tried out for the show impressed her. “We had a fantastic group of kids audition. They are very enthusiastic about theater,” she said. She did change a few roles from male to female, which she noted is allowed by the playwright.

Each school day approximately 4,000 students travel on Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) buses. Coming from as far west as Brownstown and Akron and as far east as Ronks, the students are driven to one of five schools and returned to their bus stops at the end of each day. A staff of more than 70, including about 40 drivers of full-sized buses moves them safely from place to place on a regular basis. “We are like a big family,” said Tara Eitner, manager with

Brightbill Transporation, which is contracted to provide bus services for students in CVSD. “We all pull together when we need to. If someone is running behind, other drivers will pick up their kids for them.” Julie Nieves, who has been driving CVSD students through Brightbill since 2020, agreed. She recalled a time when she was involved in an accident while driving her car to work, and the other bus drivers stopped to check on her. “We go out to breakfast sometimes. I love it,” she said. Reynolds chose “Once on This Island,” because she and others involved in the show loved the message. “We loved the themes (of the show),” said Reynolds, who noted that the energy and catchy music were also draws. “There are a lot of strong themes of faith, hope, and love.” LCHS will present “Once on This Island” on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 17, 18, and 19, at 7 p.m. in the LCHS auditorium, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster. “Once on This Island,” written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, combines “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy with Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.” The story opens on a storm-tossed island as the inhabitants comfort a frightened little girl, played by Caroline Weber, by telling the story of an orphan named Ti Moune, who was destined to love too much for a human heart to bear. The villagers telling the story transform into the characters, including Ti Moune, played by Isabelle Titzer, and her rich, ill-fated love, Daniel, played by Henry Greiner. Daniel rejects her for Andrea, played by Murphy McCormick. Ti Moune’s foster parents, Mama Euralie and Tonton Julian, are played by Hadley Davies and Zac Snyder, respectively, and Daniel’s father, Armand, is played by Joseph Martin. Under the watchful eyes of Erzulie, portrayed by Annalise Kauffman; Asaka, played by Katie Lyle; Agwé, played by Anthony Calhoun; and the dreaded Papa Ge, portrayed by Lydia Fuhrman, the storytellers and Ti Moune discover love, rejection, prejudice, and even deathdefying forgiveness. Reynolds noted that most of the cast of 22 had not heard of the story before. She added that the styles of dance and acting methods required for the show are a good challenge for the students. Trent Ruble was the second Buckskin to make the medal stand, doing so in the 113pound bracket. Ruble picked up his second sixth place district medal after missing the podium last year. “I would have loved to have had two state qualifiers, but Trent still had an exceptional career,” said Turner. Ruble posted a 3-3 mark over the two-day event with all three losses coming to others on the medal stand. The first of those losses came in the quarterfinals where eventual silver medalist Nico Tocci of Warwick knocked Ruble out of gold medal contention via an 11-5 decision. Ruble opened his district time by blanking West York’s Nate Brown 10-0 and rebounded after the loss to Tocci by pinning Keegan Zeigler of Cedar Cliff early in the third period of their tangle. Ruble’s final win was a 15-0 tech fall win over Cumberland Valley’s Alex Tennis that ensured the senior his second medal. Rumble stumbled from there, falling to Penn Manor’s Travis Clawson and Chambersburg’s Rylan Carter to settle into the sixth-place spot. Turner also mentioned the other three seniors that took part in the District 33A Championships, saying, “ We had a great group of seniors this year and it’s always hard to see some of their season’s end prematurely, but I am proud of all

Lopez accounted for two of those wins but also suffered two losses to put his record at 2816 for the season. Things started well for Lopez in the 189-pound bracket with an 85 win over Solanco’s Robert Castagna but went south with a quarterfinal loss to Teague Conover (Spring Grove). He was able to bounce back with a 7-2 win over Dallastown’s Michael Klinger but saw his season come to a close with a loss to Ephrata’s James Ellis in the consolation quarterfinals. Karayev picked up the third win for the trio, slipping by Red Land’s Ethan Eisner, 4-3, in the opening round of the 285-pound festivities but then suffered back-to-back losses to Ben Stewart (Central Dauphin) and Caleb Mussmon (Hempfield), leaving Karayev with a 22-11 record for the year. Kirchner’s time in Spring Grove ended with losses to Dallastown’s Isaiah Feeney and Big Spring’s Clayton Hetrick in the 172-pound draw. He finished with a 26-21 mark for the year. The remaining three Buckskins went a combined 1-6 with Luke Morley picking up the lone victory. He did so in his first consolation bracket match, topping Central Dauphin’s Dallas Schorr by a 6-4 final. Morley’s other two matches in the 120-pound bracket also went the distance but Morley ended up on the wrong side of those finals, with the sophomore falling to Gabriel Pecaitis (Gettysburg)

The New Holland Area Historical Society invites local residents to take a trip through Lancaster on the Old Lincoln Highway (Route 30) via a presentation by Benton Webber of Manheim Township, who has sleuthed out the original locations of 40 concrete marker posts placed along the Lincoln Highway where it traveled through Lancaster in 1928. Webber will give his presentation in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, March 17, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but attendees will be required to wear masks. Webber embarked on a journey to find the present-day whereabouts of all 40 of the marker posts after obtaining a copy of the 1928 list describing the original location of each marker. He also found an updated list from 1960 that noted that 22 had remained in their original locations that time. “There is one today in its original position,” said Webber, who noted that the post is at Third and Chestnut streets in Columbia. Webber visited the post and took measurements, and he had a portable replica built. In September 2021, he began taking the replica to the original locations as he found them and posting photos from each excursion on Facebook. He plans to complete the project

with a Facebook post on May 28. The markers were put up on a single day in September 1928 by Lancaster Boy Scouts. A representative of the Lincoln Highway Association, an organization founded in 1915 that was dedicated to making public improvements, selected the locations for the Benton Webber will discuss Route 30 posts. “They were trying location markers at a New Holland to figure out how to con- Area Historical Society presentation nect different points,” on March 17. noted Webber, who added that in Pennsylvania many historians, and preservationists in roads were gravel, well-graded, and his research. “Hurricane Smith,” which will be staged at the school, 500 Mount Sidney Road, Lancaster, on Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. each evening, has graced the school stage at least twice before - in 1999 and again in 2008. Slater chose to present the story again because she enjoys the humor and nostalgia associated with the Indiana Jones-style comedy. A special show for Conestoga Valley School District-area senior citizens will be presented free on Thursday, March 24, at 6:30 p.m. The play-within-a-play story of Hurricane Smith takes place on a movie set where a film director, Edie Diamond, played by Amanda Stoltzfoos, is finishing up production of a flick. Gloria Daily, a student and aspiring writer, played by Larissa Burkholder, arrives with her school drama club in tow and her original script under her arm. Daily’s story involves the orphaned Hurricane Smith, a famous explorer, played by Gwenyth Unruh, whose parents reportedly died in the Amazon while she was still a child. Her father disappeared while searching for the Garden of the Golden Monkey. When Hurricane is given a golden monkey by a mysterious foreigner, she sets out to discover the fate of her parents with photojour-

Czech composers Antonin Dvorak, Gustav Mahler, and Bohuslav Jan Martinu. The concert experience will conclude with a serenade of Moravian sacred music while guests enjoy a traditional Moravian Lovefeast of coffee and sweet buns. The concert will include performances by the MCCL Chamber Choir, MCCL staff ensembles, and guest artists Jeffrey Gemmell, baritone, and Jonathan Keener, piano. Other participants will include Elisa Chodan, soprano; Sarah Wingard, soprano; Rosemary Siegrist Blessing, piano; and Monica Hochstedler Carlson, piano.

nalist Linda Zest, played by Anabelle Hershey. The duo encounters adventure including plane crashes, parachute jumps, and they meet the Cobra People, led by Cobra Woman, played by Camryn Kmieczak. Due to the skills and efforts of the cast of 19, Slater has given a few students more than one part. “It’s working because the kids are dedicated, and they are talented and flexible enough that they manage to pull off these roles very well,” said Slater. “Hurricane Smith” is a larger-than-life swashbuckler that includes a few silly moments, according to Slater. “You don’t take any of your characters too seriously in this show,” she said. “The students are having fun.” The production is especially important to Slater because it might be the last for the age group. Students will be moving to a new middle school, which will not have a theater facility. The present building will be closed for renovations before it becomes Smoketown Elementary. Tickets for the show may be purchased from any cast member, by searching for “Hurricane Smith and the Garden of the Golden Monkey” at www.showtix4u.com, or at the door prior to the show. Tickets will be discounted for students.

Registration is open for the spring 2022 term of Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning offered by Landis Communities. The mission of Pathways Institute is to provide people age 55 and up with an opportunity for lifelong learning. The institute was established in 2005 at Messiah Lifeways in Mechanicsburg, but it started in Lancaster County in 2008 through a partnership with Landis Communities. The spring 2022 term began with a kickoff event on Feb. 10 at Calvary Church; about 50 people attended to speak with instructors and learn about the available courses. The 40-plus courses and learning opportunities, which run from Thursday, March 17, to Tuesday, May 24, are open to all Lancaster County residents, as well as residents from neighboring counties, who are age 55 and up. Courses, with topics covering nature, history, religion, current subjects, and more, include Discover Your Pennsylvania State Parks, The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, The Great American Films, Communicating Cross-Culturally, and Western Turkey: Crossroads of Civilization. In addition to courses, Pathways Institute will also offer off-site opportunities and excursions, such as Introduction to Pickleball, an Amish farm tour, and a tour of the Pennsylvania State Capitol. According to Eitner, the organization is short a few drivers at the moment. She noted that some drivers were not comfortable returning after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and in-person school resumed. Now, she is looking for a few dependable drivers. Eitner noted that drivers are well trained before they get on the road. Before becoming a driver, individuals must take 14 hours of classroom instruction and then spend at least six hours behind the wheel during paid training. Trained drivers are required to pass a test given by Pennsylvania state trainer Dave Lutz at Cocalico High School. Most drivers work weekdays when school is in session from about 6:35 to 9:10 a.m. and from 2:10 to 4:30 p.m. In the winter, there are also opportunities for drivers to take studentathletes to games when the team members need to leave at about 1:30 p.m. Nieves said the job is a good fit for her for many reasons. “I am on my kids’ schedules,” she said, noting she has children in elementary and high school. “I don’t have to worry if there’s a snow day or if

there’s early dismissal,” she explained. “I don’t have to scramble around to find last-minute child care.” She noted that having summers off with unemployment pay is a plus. Prior to joining Brightbill, Nieves was a hairdresser. When COVID-19 restrictions reduced traffic to the salon, she decided to answer an ad for school bus drivers. She was surprised when she was asked to drive the bus at her interview, but she said she found the automatic vehicle with plenty of mirrors and windows easy to drive. “I can’t parallel park my car, but I can parallel park my bus,” said Nieves with a laugh. She has also found students to be mostly well behaved. “(There are) fidgeters, but it’s just them getting comfortable and getting used to you,” she said. A protocol is in place for students who misbehave on the bus. “As long as you are consistent with them, you will be fine.” Readers who would like to learn more about driving buses may visit www.conestogavalley.org and click on “District” and “Job Opportunities” or call 717-656-2601.

SAIL (Systems Aligned in Learning), a product of a collaborative effort between United Way of Lancaster and Luthercare that began more than five years ago, has endeavored to give Lancaster County children access to high-quality child care. Utilizing peer mentors, the program has worked with inhome child care providers in a variety of ways to offer children and their families enhanced services. With the advent of COVID-19 and resulting restrictions, SAIL representatives knew they had to dig deeper to help families served by in-home child care providers. “One of the things we decided to do was to look at the emerging needs of the community in response to the pandemic,” said Ryan Fisher, assistant vice president of philanthropy with Luthercare. What they found resulted in SAIL honing its focus. “Through our collaborative with the United Way and with

Lancaster General Health as our partner, we discovered there were a large number of families served by inhome child care providers that were food insecure and qualified for distribution from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank,” said Fisher. By February, that research resulted in a pilot program that brought free produce and nonperishable foods to some of the families of the approximately 40 in-home child care providers served by SAIL mentors. Boxes of food, which included onions, cantaloupe, pasta, canned fruit, and fruit juice, were delivered through the child care providers to low-income families that had been adversely affected by the challenges of the pandemic. Child care providers also received food and hand sanitizer. “It is our goal to continue (the program),” said Lorita Valente, executive director of community programs with Luthercare. “We plan to do it the last Thursday of every month at this point and add more (child care) providers and volunteers as we go along.” Volunteers are needed to help the boxes reach families around

According to Lora Mangus Wenger, chairperson of the Lancaster County Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event, approximately 6,200 children around the world die each day from hunger and malnutrition-related causes. Founded in 1987, FMSC is a nonprofit organization that aims to alleviate world hunger by hosting MobilePack events, where volunteers hand-pack nutritious meals specifically designed to assist in reversing and preventing undernutrition. Every day, FMSC meals are distributed to schools, orphanages, clinics, and feeding programs around the world to help break the cycle of poverty. Since the organization was established, FMSC has distributed more than 2 billion meals in nearly 70 countries. The seventh annual three-day FMSC MobilePack event will take place at Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC), 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, from Friday, March 25, to Sunday, March 27. One thousand volunteers are needed to work during two-hour shifts to provide 300,000 meals in three days. “This event is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to give back and show care for our local and global communities,” stated Wenger. “Meet-

ing basic needs through providing food assistance seems simple, but makes a huge positive impact in the life of a person in need.” In order to pack meals safely, volunteers will be screened with questions prior to admission and will be encouraged to wear a mask throughout the event. Hand-washing stations will be implemented this year, and increased disinfecting practices between shifts per COVID-19 protocols will be in place. All volunteers will need to preregister online. Walk-ins will not be accepted due to shift limits of volunteers, which is necessary for social distancing. Those who sign up for a packing shift are encouraged to donate a minimum of $52. At the price of less than 25 cents a meal, the donation will cover the cost of one box of packed meals, equaling 216 meals, which is the average number a single volunteer packs in a twohour period. There will be a variety of tasks at the packing event, and people of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. Some jobs will require lifting, while others may be done while seated. To reserve a time slot, visit https://give.fmsc.org/willowstreet. For the second year, FMSC will collect food for the Lancaster County Food Hub in response to local food insecurity. The first year this initiative was implemented, FMSC was able to donate 18 bags of food to the Food

that a church from Berks County was inspired to host their own event after having participated in our event. That is exactly what we have been hoping will occur: more MobilePack events taking place, resulting in more people being fed around the world.” For more information about the FMSC MobilePack event at WSMC, readers may email Wenger at lmw4fmsc@gmail.com or call WSMC at 717-464-2422.
