SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Take Two - Cavod To Present “The Music Man Jr.” BY ANN MEAD ASH

fter more than a decade bringing musicals and dramas to the New Holland area, Cavod Theatre has looked back to the organization’s roots to stage a junior version of one of the theater’s first productions “The Music Man.” Last set to play in December 2020 but postponed due to COVID19 restrictions, the show, “The Music Man Jr.,” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, March 19 and 26; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, March 20 and 27; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 21 and 28.

“It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who grappled with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID-19 restrictions. Weaver divided the 36-member cast into “family groupings,” and taught the show’s lovebirds, Harold Hill, played by Derrick Lambert, and Marian Paroo, played by Soren Lefever, how to portray emotion without getting too close or looking directly at each other while singing. The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano

teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster. “The Music Man” has been a staple of musical theater since it debuted on Broadway in 1957. The show is known for toe-tappers such as “76 Trombones” and “Ya Got Trouble,” along with the softer melodies of “‘Til There Was You,” and “Goodnight, My Someone.” Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them Derrick Lambert will play Harold Hill in understand that every the rescheduled production of “The Music line in the script is in Man Jr.,” set to play at Cavod Theatre, t h e r e fo r a r e a s o n t o New Holland, on two weekends in March. help them … understand their character a forward to sharing the hard work little better.” of the cast with audiences. “I realWeaver noted that it has been ly hope audiences can see there is satisfying to see students take a still fun to be had in bad times,” break from what is happening in he said, adding that he also hopes the world when they come to the theme of authenticity will rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the shine through. “The message kids come in here and have fun behind the show is being able to for three or four hours and forget find your true self,” he explained. about everything else in a safe “You don’t have to lie or be fake. environment putting on a show,” It’s OK to be who you are.” he said. “We think it’s important for people to know about (human) trafficking and to know it happens right here in Lancaster County,” said Janelle Esbenshade, director of development with North Star Initiative, “with the hope that once they understand … if they come in contact with (someone who is being trafficked), they will be educated enough to know what to do.” To help make community members aware of the signs of trafficking, North Star Initiative will hold an awareness event, Welcome to the Battle, at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Friday, March 19. The event, which will feature a panel discussion, will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets, which are limited, may be purchased up until the day of the event. Proceeds raised from the event will help provide trauma therapy for the survivors at The Harbor. VisionCorps’ Virtual Format Provides Education And Community BY ANN MEAD ASH

When COVID-19 restrictions shut down the state in March of 2020, VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization working to empower the blind and vision impaired, stopped providing services, but not for long. “We shut down services for a couple weeks, but we quickly realized our services were still needed out in the community,” said Chris Ament,

Men; Brad Ortenzi, retired police officer and eastern USA regional director of Zoe International; and Liz Nolan, education specialist and licensed professional counselor for North Star Initiative. A surprise guest will also join the discussion. The event will include desserts provided by Zig’s Bakery and Shady Maple. Attendees will be asked to follow Petra’s COVID-19 guidelines, including wearing masks. See North Star pg 4

On Jan. 15, the anniversary of the late Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, one local organization announced its most recent effort to promote diversity and inclusion, ideals to which King dedicated much of his life. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, has established a scholarship that will benefit graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds. Master’s-level students who have excelled in the field of speech-language pathology at Penn State University will be supported by the scholarship, and recipients will be offered externships at Schreiber, an option that the organization expects

to help it recruit and hire more minority candidates for therapy positions. Schreiber president James DeBord has led the creation of several initiatives committed to reducing disparities in care and to fostering an organization that better reflects the diverse populations it serves. These include connecting with national associations representing professionals of color to expand its hiring pool, conducting outreach in local school districts to affirm the professional aspirations of young people, strengthening clinical affiliations with historically black colleges and universities, and drawing on job-training programs that are equipped to attract people

of color into every department and to its management team. “Throughout our history, Schreiber has always tried to provide services to some of the most vulnerable children in our community,” DeBord said. “Our mantra is we will serve every family who needs us, and we want every child we see to reach their fullest potential. But in the past and even still today - we have not achieved the diversity in our field that would best benefit our clients. By endowing this graduate scholarship at Penn State, we are taking a long-overdue step to advance equitable access to training in outpatient pediatric therapy services, with the long-term

goal of creating a pool of speech-language pathology experts that reflect the communities they serve.” Penn State was selected as the educational partner because a large proportion of Schreiber’s practitioners holds degrees from Penn State’s program. “The college’s speech-language pathology program continues to pioneer interventions that are having a transformative effect on augmenting communication,” said Craig J. Newschaffer, Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Dean of Penn State’s College of Health and Human Development. “The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development Educational Equity Graduate Scholarship represents a major expansion in our capacity to secure talented applicants from across the full spectrum of candidates. We are deeply grateful to Schreiber for its generosity and leadership in making all these advances possible.” Schreiber has pledged $275,000 for the scholarship, which will be raised in addition to the funds needed for the center’s daily operations. The gift will be matched by Penn State’s Educational Equity Matching Program for a total endowment of $550,000. Seminary Bestows Award To ECC When Kevin Eshleman, lead pastor of Ephrata Community Church (ECC), first became a student at Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown in 2007, he was impressed with the caliber of the institution and the quality of the professors. “It’s a great place,” said Eshleman. “The professors are godly people who love the Lord and have dug deep into the Scriptures in their specific areas of expertise.” Eshleman wondered if there might be a way for the seminary to share the wisdom of its teachers with members of the community and church leaders who are looking to deepen their own knowledge of God. His answer, the creation of the Institute for Christian Learning (ICL) at ECC, resulted in Evangelical Seminary presenting the Catalytic Church Award to ECC at the end of 2020. The award would have typically been presented at the school’s fall banquet. But when the banquet was canceled due to COVID19 restrictions, Ann Steel, Evangelical Seminary executive director of institutional advancement, traveled to

ECC, 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, to present the award in person. ICL was born of Eshleman asking the question, “How can we take these (professors), who are in a graduate setting, and actually bring some of their materials to a broader audience?” He noted that he was thinking that a number of area residents, ranging from local church leaders looking for refinement to pastors who need refresher courses, might be interested in taking part. “We worked through the idea in 2019,” said Eshleman, who noted that the first launch of ICL attracted 90 students in two classes in a non-credit format. ICL has now offered classes in both live and livestreamed configurations for two semesters. “What we learned was that people were very much hungry for (this knowledge),” shared Eshleman, who credits Matt Swords, pastor of discipleship and young adults, with implementing the plan for ICL. Eshleman added that it has not only been ECC members taking part in the classes, but interested learners from a number of area churches. “Many people

approached me and thanked me for providing this for them,” he said. In response to the award, Eshleman expressed gratitude to the seminary for being willing to partner with the church. Calling the effort a “significant relationship and the opportunity for many people to grow in the Lord,” he wrote on the school’s web-

site, “Thank you to Evangelical, its professors, and its leadership for the opportunity you’ve given us to partner with you.” Readers who would like to learn more about the seminary may visit https://evangelical .edu/about/about-evangelical. Those who are interested in ICL may visit https://ephrata communitychurch.com/icl.

vice president of rehabilitation and education with VisionCorps. To stay within the restrictions, Ament explained that VisionCorps developed a hybrid approach to service delivery. The hybrid programming is part virtual and part in-person. “You can’t safely teach someone how to cross the street over the computer,” noted Ament, who added that the organization was careful to protect all involved. “Our goal is to address safety with employees and the clients we serve,” he said. “For instance, a lot of our intakes are done either over the computer or the phone, but when someone needs direct attention, whether it’s our occupational therapy or mobility program, (it’s completed in person) with safety precautions taken.” Virtual programming in a variety of formats has been utilized by VisionCorps staff as well as associated groups that receive services. “ We

have a lot of small groups meeting virtually,” said Ament, referring to the nearly 20 groups that discuss topics from mobility to books to service dogs. “ We serve five counties, and each one has a support group and topics to discuss,” shared Ament. VisionCorps covers Lancaster, Chester, York, Adams, and Lebanon counties. VisionCorps vice president and chief development officer Megan Tomsheck said that one woman who receives services shared how the virtual connection has changed her life. “(She) said that the (situation) has improved her life because it is hard for her to get out of her home, but now she can participate virtually,” recalled Tomsheck. Ament noted that, overall, the changes have benefited clients and the organization. “The reality is that our service delivery model will be much stronger because we can do these things virtually,” he said, adding that virtual connections use time more

Trafficking that occurs in Lancaster County is often related to the network of highways that converge here. “We are a pass-through state,” explained Esbenshade, who noted that roads from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia come through Lancaster, York, and Harris-

With a staff of 15, The Harbor provides around-theclock care seven days a week. “We accept women 18 to 35 years of age,” said Esbenshade. Esbenshade said that the program is implemented in a number of phases, beginning with an assessment and orientation. “ We go over goals and how we can best help (a woman),” explained Esbenshade. “We tailor the curriculum to each individual.” The program includes a focus on trauma and drug and alcohol addiction, along with life skills training. When Ease the Burden (ETB) was founded in 2019, the organization sought to help fill financial gaps for families throughout Lancaster County. In the few years since, however, ETB board members have decided to partner with educators in a pilot program to help area children. They formed a relationship with Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), working with Kathy Koenig, director of student services for PVSD. “We found that we had started to focus specifically on children as the group we were trying to help,” said Sean High, one of the founders of ETB. ETB board members plan to connect with other districts in the future. Along with adjusting the focus, the idea of giving back to the community will be part

Jack Herr

of ETB’s DNA. “We really wanted to emphasize community service,” High stated, noting that school staff members will organize community service activities in exchange for ETB funds. “So, you might have a third-grade teacher who would say, ‘Let’s take a Saturday afternoon to clean the park,’” explained High, who added that in return the class would receive an item that meets an educational need. When the recipient is an individual child, ETB will take steps to protect the anonymity of the student. Founder Mindy Lapp pointed to a school play as an example. “Due to the pandemic, the booster clubs don’t have as much money,” she said, adding that all the students in a cast would like T-shirts, but not every child’s family can afford one. “(Through ETB), the whole cast could (per-

Jill Castor

form) community service, and they would all get T-shirts,” she said. Lapp added that she had spoken with teachers at both the Pequea Valley intermediate and high schools, who told her that students could complete service projects in small groups to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines. Another goal of ETB will be to connect with area businesses. “We could tie the business partners in with an item, and (the business could put) their logo on it,” High said, adding that it is important for businesses to strengthen ties with the community at this time. “We could do a health bag with toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo to remove the health barriers to education,” High said. “(Schools) will tell us the items (that are needed) and the community service (to be completed).” He added that

Mindy Lapp

service projects need not be complicated. “It could be raking leaves for elderly people or shoveling snow,” he shared, adding that Koenig is working with teachers who have classroom needs and community service ideas in mind. Lapp added that the new focus will allow ETB to help many more students than they could with individual grants. “If you had 100 kids who receive a needed educational item and 100 hours of community service was served, that goes hand in hand,” she said. ETB board members include, in addition to High and Lapp, Jack Herr, Jill Castor, and Lisa Landis-Blowers. ETB has a website that offers information about the organization and shares opportunities to donate. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.helpetb.org.

Members of Rotary Club of Lancaster Penn Square presented new books for libraries in Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster’s city clubhouses on Feb. 5. Led by Kay McClenathan, volunteers raised funds and carefully selected books for the donation. Selections include “Yasmin the Super Hero” and “Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race,” which reflect the diversity of children who attend programs at the club. Additionally, the books offer opportunities to explore the world and increase reading proficiency, noted Karen Schloer, CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster. The new books were to be installed in the libraries at the Southeast Clubhouse, 335 Dauphin St., and Jack Walker Clubhouse, 249 W. Lemon St. For information on how children can join the Boys & Girls Club for a nominal fee per year, readers may visit www.bgclanc.org.

Alexander D. Egner (left) and Jonathan P. Chieppor, who are former assistant district attorneys, have formed Chieppor & Egner.

Former assistant district attorneys Alexander D. Egner and Jonathan P. Chieppor have formed Chieppor & Egner, a law firm serving the southcentral Pennsylvania region. Both attorneys recently left the Lancaster County district attorney’s office and bring a wealth of courtroom experience to private practice. Both attorneys were born and raised in Lancaster. They now focus on serving their local community by representing their neighbors in many types of matters across the mid-state area. Practicing in many litigation areas, including criminal defense, family law and personal injury, Chieppor and Egner are bringing their years of experience in Lancaster County courtrooms as a resource for their clients. Chieppor was the former head of Lancaster County’s auto theft task force. As a

prosecutor, he was trained in standard field sobriety tests; conducted several trials, including those for serious offenses; and averaged a case load of over 200 cases at one time. In the evenings, he referees boys’ varsity basketball. Egner, a former prosecutor and military police officer, left Lancaster for the Army but came back to serve his hometown after earning his law degree. He was a general trial attorney in the Lancaster County district attorney’s office, and his assignments included firearms restoration, expungement of criminal charges, welfare fraud cases and a significant caseload of adult criminal charges. Chieppor & Egner is located at 53 N. Duke St., Suite 303, Lancaster. For more information, readers may call 717-9477483 or visit www.chieppor andegnerlaw.com.

Kreider Farms recently announced that it is an American Humane Certified dairy. American Humane Certified program is an independent animal welfare program dedicated to the humane treatment of farm animals. The status is awarded by American Humane, a national humane organization, after farms undergo stringent inspections from independent auditors and pass more than 200 multi-pronged, science-based welfare standards developed in collaboration with, and regularly

reviewed by, a Scientific Advisory Committee. Kreider Farms officially received the American Humane Certification for its dairy farm in November 2020, although its cage-free hen-laying operation, under the brand Noah’s Pride, has been certified American Humane since 2016. For more information, readers may visit www.kreider farms.com. Those interested in carrying Kreider Farms products at their store may call 717-665-4415.
