Joyful Noise CVHS To Present “The Sound Of Music”

hen Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) musical director V. Gabriel Whitman chose the 2022 spring show for the school, he had one thought in mind. “I wanted a classic,” said Whitman of the Rodgers and Hammerstein tale that features the wellknown songs “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” and “Do Re Mi.” CVHS will present “The Sound of Music” in the school auditorium, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, March 31; Friday, April 1; and Saturday, April 2, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, April 3, at 2 p.m. A free preview will be given on Wednesday, March 30 at 6 p.m. for Conestoga Valley-area senior citizens who present special cards. Senior citizens who wish to obtain cards may call 717-397-5231. “The Sound of Music” follows a young postulant named Maria,

W

played by Paige Harris, who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, played by William Roland, and brings music and joy to the household. As the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the von Trapp family face a moral decision. The cast also features Cora Glacken as the Mother Abbess, Jenna Rychener as Liesl, Conner Nafziger as Rolf, Chris Needham as Max Detweiler, and Alison Harner as Elsa Schraeder. The other members of the von Trapp family are played by Maya Harner, Lee Shiffer, Samantha Rodwanski, Liam Hengst, Clementine Johnson, and Layna Morrie. The show, which is known for songs such as “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, “The Sound of Music” earned five Tony Awards and five Oscars. The original story is based on “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp. Paige Harris (left) and William Roland star in the upcoming Conestoga Valley High School production of “The Sound of Music.”

GOTR Plans Breakfast BY ANN MEAD ASH

BY ANN MEAD ASH

Many years ago, when Dani Trussell and her family lived in Lititz she would walk her son to the park. On the way, she met a woman who would sit on her porch and work on quilts. Trussell got to know the woman, and she taught Trussell, who already knew how to sew clothing, the art of quilting. In the last dozen years, Trussell has created between 35 and 50 quilts, most of which she has given away. See LCWC pg 7

“This is not your traditional corporate breakfast,” said Katie Sandoe, executive director of Girls on the Run (GOTR), Lancaster. “We will

have a GOTR team of girls greeting people, and it will have the true GOTR spirit and energy.” Sandoe encouraged area residents to, “come to be inspired and connect and find some joy. This is the place to do it!”

encourage one another,” Sandoe noted. “(They) can walk away with some actionable steps they can use to make a positive change in their life and for others,” Sandoe stated. “It’s a time to hear powerful stories, share their own powerful stories, and walk away with hope and inspiration to make beautiful things happen this year.” Sponsorship opportunities are available for the breakfast, but Sandoe noted that many businesses are purchasing tables so that they might bring employees as a personal development or wellness initiative. “Employees are reaching burnout, and this is a way to help,” she noted. The breakfast is a fundraiser, and there will be opportunities to give to GOTR. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. About 50% of girls who participate are in need of scholarship funds to do so. Space is limited, and tickets are necessary to attend. Readers who wish to take part may register at www.gotrlancaster.org, by clicking on “News and Events.”

“These three women will share how facing the truth of their own stories and learning from them and writing new endings led them to their purpose and how to live out their calling,” said Sandoe, who noted that the speakers will tell of how understanding the challenge and pain and joy that they experienced can be leveraged as a catalyst for change in others’ lives and the lives of communities. Sandoe noted that weathering more than two years of COVID-19 restrictions led organizers to conceive of the event. “We have heard that people are really tired … that their souls are exhausted,” said Sandoe. “ We asked, ‘How do we get through this year feeling more connected to ourselves … to one another, and to our community?’” Sandoe said that the GOTR team believes that people are craving the opportunity to learn something new and to come away informed, inspired, and hopeful. In addition to hearing the speakers, attendees will be asked to complete an immersive exercise “where they can share their own stories, hear from one another, and

Whitman noted that issues inherent in staging a high school production of the show include directing students to play younger characters. “It’s hard for them to play a younger kid,” he said. “They are playing three or four years younger than they are, and that is more of a challenge.” “The Sound of Music” is unusual among similar shows because it has few ensemble songs. Whitman noted that the production added the song “I Have Confidence” as an ensemble piece to enhance the action for the 40member cast. He also added a few younger players. “The kids love it,” Whitman said. “They are having fun.” Whitman noted that the size of

Among them is a wall hanging decorated with 16 breeds of dogs; Trussell plans to donate the wall hanging to an animal rescue so it can be auctioned. Trussell also has a quilt she made for herself in shades of blue against a white backdrop called Four Winds. Other patterns she has sewn include Mirror Mirror, Pinwheel, Cathedral Star, Hourglass Wreath, and Log Cabin. When Trussell cannot quilt a creation herself, she uses the services of long-arm quilter Delania Lefever in Manheim. Trussell noted that she is unusual among quilters because she chooses a fabric first and then finds a pattern she thinks will work well with it. She also creates her own

Now, Trussell will share some of her knowledge of quilting at the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club event titled “Quilt Making Memories” at a luncheon to be held on Wednesday, April 6, at noon at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lancaster. In addition to Trussell’s presentation and display of handmade quilts, Annie Friedrichs will share how “Perfect Love Overcomes Inadequacy.” When Trussell first met the woman who would teach her to quilt, the woman was making a Cathedral quilt. “A true (Cathedral quilt) is one of the most tedious to make,” said Trussell, who spent the next six months working on one, finally creating a 3-by-3-foot square. After Trussell’s son went to school, she took a job outside the home, and she hung up her needle for a while. “I promised myself I would do a full-size

meaningful for the Sauders. Like many local farmers, Duane and Tina come from multigenerational farms. The ninth generation of Tina’s family is currently working the Elizabethtown farm where she grew up. For the Sauders’ two daughters, helping out on the farm is part of their normal day. From assisting with the births of piglets to mucking out the stalls, 16-year-old Riley and 13-year-old Morgan share the responsibilities of the family farm. Both girls are involved in 4-H and show pigs, beef, and goats. Passing a farm on to the next generation is often a challenge as children grow up and have interests apart from farming. “We’re blessed to be able to raise them in this lifestyle and culture. … It’s a passion and a lifestyle that you don’t clock out from,” explained Tina. A florist by trade, Tina had to cut back her hours to focus more time on the farm. When talking about launching the

pork snack line just before the pandemic hit, Tina said, “People were (focusing on) getting back to their roots, shopping local. So, while the world was turning upside down, it was a good time to start the business, but we didn’t know that.” The Sauders share their farm life with followers on social media. With the popularity of farmhouse style, Tina says, many people think farming is a peaceful way of life, and they romanticize it. Using social media allows her to connect with people to share the culture and dispel myths associated with farming. “We love our livestock, and we always say that they have one bad day. …We give them the best life we can (before that day),” she noted. The Sauders’ other goal is to raise awareness. “We’re looking to bridge the gap. … Americans are at least three generations removed from the farm. … It’s our job not only to provide but

With the average farm in Lancaster County being 77 acres, Glory Be Farm in Manheim is considered small. Duane and Tina Sauder purchased the farm, where they raise Berkshire pigs, 23 years ago. Still, it wasn’t until January 2020 that they took the crucial first steps to make their small business dreams a reality. Just before the pan-

demic hit, the Sauders launched their pork snack line. Fast forward two years, and the business continues to grow. In addition to online sales, several Glory Be Farm products bearing the PA Preferred label can be purchased at locations in Manheim, Mount Joy, Lititz, Ephrata, and Elizabethtown. While selling their products is vital to the farm’s success, it’s the lifestyle that makes it

Farming from pg 8 to educate,” said Tina. Though Glory Be Farm may be small, Duane and Tina’s passion for farming is vast. “It’s so important for us to inspire others to go after their dreams because there were times in our lives that were hardships, and the dream seemed unattainable. One time my husband and I were talking about it, and my husband said, ‘Well, if that ever happens, glory be to God,’ and that’s where the name (of the farm) came from,” Tina said. When asked if she had an advice for those considering farming or achieving any goal, Tina responded, “You have to take that first step of faith, because you can’t steer a Morgan (left) and Riley preparing to show their Berkshire pigs at the PA Farm Show parked car very well.”
