Mentors Make A Difference After-School Program Seeks Volunteers

ach Tuesday at 3:05 p.m. from September to May, about 10 adult mentors arrive at Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS). At 3:30 p.m., executive director Jonathan Barrett and other CVCCS staff members escort students from Smoketown Elementary School to the CVCCS offices at 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, to take part in Rooted, an after-school program serving students in fourth through sixth grades. From 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., the students enjoy a hefty snack, such as pizza or chicken nuggets, while having one-on-one time and a short Bible study with their mentors, followed by games that build math skills and reading time. At 5 p.m., students are picked up by family members or transportation is provided to their homes. According to Dottie Slothower, director for client services with CVCCS, students are recommended

men are paired with boys and women with girls, but several boys currently have female mentors. “We would like more men to (volunteer to) be mentors,” said Barrett. Family dinners are held a few times a

On Feb. 18, all the elementary and middle school students of Lancaster Mennonite School’s Locust Grove campus met in the gym for the start of the first Move-a-Thon to raise funds for the Wonderfully Made Scholarship Endowment. The endownment’s name came from Psalm 139:14, which states, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well,” which was read during the Move-a-Thon’s opening ceremony. When the ceremony ended, the students started moving. See Locus Grove pg 5

guidance counselors felt what the kids really needed was the relationship (with mentors).” Slothower noted that she is a firm believer that any child can benefit from more love and one-on-one attention. “A mentoring program can definitely make a difference in a child’s life,” she pointed out, adding that the academic exercises the program currently includes are designed to build thinking skills. Eventually, Barrett would like to see the program offered to more students. “It’s a dream to offer the program at the other (Conestoga Valley School District) elementary schools,” said Barrett. “But we need more volunteers to make that happen.” CVCCS provides a food pantry, a clothing bank, financial coaching, and other services to the community. Stars in Space Camp will be offered for two different age groups. Children ages 3 to 6 will meet at Cavod Academy, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, from 9 a.m. to noon from Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 15. Youth ages 7 to 12 will meet on the same days at the same location from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. “(Stars in Space Camp) is really a great way for a student to explore the arts,” said Dienner, who noted that the program will include tumbling, music, crafts, and dance, along with devotions and worship. Musical theater camp will give students ages 10 to 18 a chance to take part in the production “Seussical Jr.” directed by Stephanie Morales. The camp will run on weekdays from July 11 to Friday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. Students will audition for the show, but each

camper will be guaranteed a part. “(This camp) has been such a valuable experience for kids,” said Dienner. “It gives them a chance to perform on a full stage with costumes and lighting in a real theater.” The camp will include devotions, small group time, and opportunities to chat and pray. Performance of the show, which will be open to the public, will be held on Saturday, July 23, and Sunday, July 24, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. Tickets will be necessary to attend. A Summer Dance Intensive program for intermediate and advanced dancers will be held from Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the academy. The program, which is for students age 12 and up, will bring in guest artists to instruct the students.

Camp Create is specifically designed for those age 13 and up with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Trained teachers work with the students in dance, movement, and artwork. The camp will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. from Monday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 5, and a performance will be given at 6 p.m. on Aug. 5. “This has been a tremendous program,” said Dienner of Camp Create. According to Dienner, each camp includes activities designed to help students find their own identity. “The strength of Cavod is believing in each person and pulling out their Godgiven gifts and talents,” she noted. Individuals who wish to register for the camps may do so by visiting https://cavod.org. Readers who have questions may call 717-354-3355.

that all the parents of students (could go out),” said Dickert, who added that crafts and snacks were provided for students. Parents made a donation in exchange for the child care. During the COVID-19 shutdown, the group continued to work to grow the fund toward the $50,000 needed to establish the endowment. In December 2021, sponsorship papers were sent home with students asking them to share the fundraising need with family and friends. The students were told if they could raise the final $4,000, a bounce house would be brought to the school for a day in the spring as a reward. They learned on the morning of the Move-a-Thon that they had achieved that goal. Dickert noted that it is exciting to have completed the endowment, but that fundraising will need to continue for families of students who require academic support in the future. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.lancastermennonite.org and click on “Support.”

“Each group of students (was) in the gym for one hour,” explained Anita Dickert, academic support teacher with Locust Grove, who said that each group spent a half hour doing exercise dance with an instructor, followed by a half-hour of playing games that kept them on the move. The fundraiser brought in more than $4,000. This amount was enough to establish the Wonderfully Made Scholarship Endowment, which will benefit students in Dickert’s classroom. According to Dickert, the movement to create the fund kicked off in 2018 with concern about the extra costs incurred by parents of children with learning disabilities or other academic support needs. “For years, we have talked about the inequity for these parents who have to pay for special services,” said Dickert. Organizers of the fund began letting area residents know of the need. In February of 2020, the group held a special fundraiser. “All the teachers volunteered to babysit on Valentine’s Day so

Mondays through Fridays. Because Veritas Academy has experienced robust growth in recent years, families are encouraged to visit and apply early in order to ensure their student’s spot, as many classes are expected to fill quickly. As of March 10, most spots were available in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, seventh grade, and ninth grade. Established in 1996, Veritas Academy now serves over 300 students. Accredited by the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS), Veritas Academy employs the guidelines of the trivium - grammar, logic, and rhetoric - in its education philosophy, capitalizing on the different strengths in each developmental stage to enhance a child’s learning ability and experience. The school seeks to produce graduates who are well-versed in facts and knowledge, are well-spoken in any situation, and have well-formed thinking and a keen ability to reason.

There’s a war going on around you, and you’re invited to join the fight. Welcome to the Battle will be held on Friday, March 25, at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church, 419 Pierson Road, Lititz. The event, which will begin at 5:30 p.m., is organized by North Star Initiative (NSI), a Lititzbased nonprofit that supports victims of human trafficking. Welcome to the Battle will bring together community agencies to discuss survivor impact, from rescue to restoration. Presentation To Feature 16th-Century Hymnal

The Ausbund

Swiss Pioneer Preservation Associates will offer a presentation, “From Passau to Pennsylvania: The European Editions of the Ausbund,” at Martindale Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata, on Wednesday, March 30, at 7 p.m. Joe A. Springer and Lloyd Weiler will display the only known copy of the 1564 Ausbund, which is thought to be the first-known printed collection of hymns still in use today. Found in this first edition are hymns written by Anabaptists imprisoned at Passau in the 1530s. These hymns are numbers 81 to 130 in current Ausbunds. Springer has served as curator of the Mennonite Historical Library at Goshen College in Indiana since 1986. He will give basic information about the 1564 Ausbund and will speak about other European editions of the Ausbund and how hymns such as the “Loblied” were added. Springer works with many people interested in Anabaptist history. He especially enjoys answering history questions related to printing, hymnody, and genealogy. Admission is free, and donations will be accepted. For more details, call Raymond Zimmerman at 717354-7139 or Weiler at 717629-1854.
