A Tradition Kept - Quilting Days Effort Will Help Sharing Fund BY ANN MEAD ASH
n the winter of 2020, Fairmount, a retirement community located in Ephrata, hosted its annual Quilting Days event in the Farm Crest Community Room. As had been done for many years, quilting enthusiasts, from beginner to advanced, were invited to take part in producing quilts to be sold at Fairmount’s annual benefit auction and chicken barbecue in September. The three-day quilting event was completed within weeks of the state being shut down by COVID-19 restrictions. This year, the tradition was once again observed, with quilters meeting at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship on Farmersville Road, New Holland, on March 6, 9, and 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Organizer Nora Hoover said that the quilters worked on 18 quilts, which were mostly queen sized. Hoover noted that over the three days, more than 180 quilters gathered to work. “ We have had good help,” she said. The wives of Fairmount

“A lot of people come together to do something like this ... We are Very happy (that they do).” but some featured shades of brown, peach, and rust, and one was done in cranberry, browns, and yellows with a cream background. “I really like these colors. They work nicely together,” said Peter Passage, stewardship director at Fairmount. When the quilts made during Quilting Days are auctioned off in September, proceeds will benefit the Sharing Fund, which provides $2.5 million in uncompensated care for Fairmount residents annually. In 2020, the auction
segment of the event was held online with items being previewed and picked up at New Covenant. The drive-through chicken barbecue was held there as well. About a dozen of the approximately 30 quilts prepared for the 2020 auction were completed during Quilting Days. According to Passage, the quilts brought in about $14,000 of the more than $91,000 raised by the partial event. The 2021 Fairmount Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 11, at Fairmount. Passage said the format of this year’s event will depend on a number of factors. At this point, Passage is happy to see work on the quilts progressing. “A lot of people come together to do something like this,” he said. “We are very happy (that they do).” More information about the mission of Fairmount may be found at https://fairmounthomes.org. Ruth Smoker works on a quilt that will be auctioned off to help support Fairmount’s Sharing Fund.
BIHUMC Carefully Reopens BY ANN MEAD ASH
When your flock is made up of some of the most vulnerable among us, a pandemic will cause you to be very cautious. For Larry Dunlap, pastor of Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church (BIHUMC), whose congregation is mostly octogenarians, holding church services over the past year has been tricky. “Only six of our people have internet access, so it didn’t make much sense to stream the services,” said Dunlap, who has been keeping in touch with members via cards and phone calls and visiting when it was safe. The church was open from May through November 2020 with safety precautions in place.

The members of Cub Pack 82 of Brownstown needed a place to hold their annual Pinewood Derby race. “We normally meet at Brownstown Elementary School,” said Cubmaster Dan Dennis, “but that (building) is closed to outside groups (due to COVID-19 restrictions).” Fortunately, Dennis has a friend who attends Hinkletown Mennonite Church

Restaurant To Offer Free Easter Dinner The restaurants offered a free Easter dinner last year for the first time. Yianis said he and his father, along with his brotherin-law, Dino Papazekos, were sitting around talking about how the pandemic was affecting the community when inspiration struck. “My dad said it might be good to do something like this for the community and it would be good to see our customers, because we were closed at that time,” Yianis recalled. “Last year went so well, we knew we wanted to do it again this year. We’re hoping to do it every year.” This year has been tough for the restaurant business, he noted, but that didn’t stop the family from wanting to give back. “We’ve been in Mount Joy for 21 years, and we’ve been in Ephrata about six years. The communities in both locations have been very supportive,” Yianis explained. “We have regulars who come in two or three times a day. We’ve just gotten such a great response to our restaurants that we thought, if we can give up one day of profits to give back to the community, we’re more than happy to do that.” Last year, the restaurants gave out 1,000 meals between the two locations, he said, adding, “Each meal was packed for two people, so we actually prepared 2,000 meals.” Yianis said the staff is happy to participate in the opportunity to thank customers for their support. “We have very strong loyalty with our customers, but also with our staff,” he stated. “As a family-owned restaurant, we are very tight knit. We also like to think of the community as part of our family because we love to getting to know our customers.” The free meal is a way to show community members how much they are appreciated, Yianis said. “With all the negativity and hardship of this past year, this is something we can do to put a smile on someone’s face,” he explained. “We just like to make people happy.”

UL Township Offices Move To New Location Former Leola Elementary School To Be Sold At Auction BY ANN MEAD ASH
On March 15, employees of Upper Leacock Township who had been working in the former Leola Elementary School at 26 to 46 Hillcrest Drive, Leola, moved to new offices at 161 Newport Road, Leola, the former home of World Travel Agency and originally a Meridian Bank office. “We’re downsizing,” said township manager Michael Morris, who noted that the new building will offer 4,000 square feet of space. For township residents, this means that township business regarding water, sewer, roads, zoning, and payments will now be handled at the new address. An outside drop box and separate meeting room entrances are offered at the new location.
Morris reported that the offices had been located on Hillcrest Drive since 1999. In addition to township offices, the 47,000-squarefoot building has served as the home to Veritas Academy, Steps to Success Christian Childcare, and the former location of the Leola Branch Library, along with other organizations. The building offers 23 classrooms, outside play areas, a gym, a cafeteria, and a commercial kitchen. It will be sold at auction by Martin and Rutt Auctioneers on Tuesday, April 27, at 5 p.m. The building is currently owned by Upper Leacock Township. “There’s a lot of potential use for this (Hillcrest Drive) building,” shared Morris. An open
house will be held at the Hillcrest Drive building on Saturday, April 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. Readers who would like to know more about the building to be auctioned may call 717-587-8906 or email johnruttsold@gmail.com. Morris noted that the move to the smaller building will significantly lower maintenance and other costs associated with a larger building. Township office hours at the new building will be on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Zoning office hours will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. The township office number remains 717656-9755. More information about Upper Leacock Township may be found by visiting www.ultwp.com.

Lancaster Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), in partnership with Steinman Communications and LNP Media Group, has announced a new scholarship, the Debbie Stremmel Memorial Scholarship. The annual scholarship will provide financial support to a Lancaster County student pursuing a career in a trade/technical field and provide financial assistance to the student’s home school district for career exploration programming, new technology or innovations. A $1,500 award will go to a student for postsecondary tuition or education-related expenses, and a $1,000 award will be presented to the student’s school district for trade/technical career exploration programming. Applications must be received or postmarked by Saturday, April 3, to be considered for this award. Debbie Stremmel was born and raised in Lancaster County. She held the position of LNP Media Group recruitment solutions supervisor and was a member of Society for Human Resource Manage-
ment her entire career, participating at the local and national levels. Most recently she was the co-chair of Lancaster SHRM’s Workforce Readiness Committee and had been elected to the board. Her expertise in recruitment marketing was born from experience working on local, regional, national and international platforms. An early adopter of new technology, Stremmel championed the use of labor statistics and data to build new technology tools to simplify and strengthen recruitment campaigns to attract the most qualified candidates. Stremmel wanted students to understand their options and learn to match their talents to lifelong careers, not just jobs. Lancaster SHRM is an affiliate chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management, a professional membership organization dedicated exclusively to the advancement of human resource management. With more than 400 members representing more than 100 organizations, Lancaster
SHRM has been a resource for networking and the exchange of information in Lancaster County for over 60 years. BIHUMC from pg 1 won’t be listening every morning or afternoon,” he said. “I don’t need to be pounding myself with the news all day.” Dunlap noted that the opening of the church was made bittersweet by the fact that some members passed on during the last year. He noted that some congregants had been ill with the virus and
that three had died. Looking ahead, the pastor is hopeful that his flock will be able to gather safely for many weeks and months to come. “We may not go back to exactly the way it used to be, but we will find a new normal,” he said. Concerning the future beyond the pandemic, he added, “I think we will be together
again holding hands and hugging, but we will always be more mindful about how we could be spreading bacteria and viruses,” he said. BIHUMC is located at 2620 Old Philadelphia Pike, Birdin-Hand. On March 7, BIHUMC opened its doors for the first time in 2021 for live worship. One weekly service was held at 9 a.m. with a variety of safety measures in place. The use of masks and social distancing were in practice at the church when it was open in 2020. “The chairs are already six feet apart, but we allow couples to sit next to each other,” said Dunlap, who noted that a machine that sanitizes an individual’s hands and takes his or her temperature is stationed at the door. “We will have Communion using fellowship cups that have the grape juice and wafer in one container,” explained Dunlap. “You take the wafer and eat that and take the other side and drink the grape juice.” The church secretary places bulletins on the chairs prior to the service. “You find your chair and what you need for the worship service is there,” said Dunlap. Congregants sing wearing masks, but Dunlap also added responsive readings of the psalms to the service as an adjunct to the hymns. Dunlap even scheduled a sermon that dove into a COVID-19-related topic. “My first sermon was about being inundated with news,” shared Dunlap, who went on a 30day news fast from the beginning of February through early March to prepare to preach. He noted that the experience has changed him. “Now that I have gone through that fast, I will probably tune into the news, but I

Spreading Dementia Friendliness Countywide Organization Aims To Change Perspectives BY ANN MEAD ASH
After Crystal Yunginger, who has a background in gerontology, moved to New Holland, she asked her mother-in-law, Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet Ministries, if there were memory cafes in the area. Joan answered, “That’s on our agenda.” In March of 2019, Crystal became a volunteer with ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community (DF), an outreach of Garden Spot Village (GSV). In June of 2019, the organization launched memory cafes to provide settings for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to enjoy social engagement and conversation about relevant topics in a stigma-free environment. By September of 2020, Crystal was working as coordinator for the organization,
serve, including an advisory board, which acts as the organization’s eyes and ears in the community, and a working group, which furthers DFA initiatives and plans events. Crystal noted that people with dementia and caregivers will be essential to the group, but that representatives from businesses and organizations will be important as well. “We want to discuss ways businesses can be more dementia friendly to customers, (such as) creating an atmosphere that is conducive to a customer with dementia or supporting an employee who is a caregiver,” she said. Melody Karick, who serves as director of memory care with GSV, noted that a goal of the organization is to eliminate stereotypes. “One of our hopes is to break the stigma of dementia, by making people aware that it’s OK to have this disease,” she said. “We
which moved to join Dementia Friendly America (DFA) in November of that year, becoming Dementia Friendly Lancaster County (DFLC). At the same time, Crystal became a champion for Dementia Friends PA, which gave her the opportunity to host Dementia Friends sessions. In January, Crystal held her first Dementia Friends information session in a virtual format. The session covered key messages about dementia and how it affects individuals, among other topics. It ended with participants developing a plan involving ways to make the community more dementia friendly. To introduce the organization to community members, a pamphlet about Dementia Friendly Lancaster County and a volunteer guidelines booklet have been created. The booklet outlines the ways people can
don’t need to hide it or be ashamed of it, and we are the people that can make a difference.” She added that when she trains team members at GSV’s Meadow View Memory Support campus, she focuses on showing them different approaches to a situation. “There is a way to enhance quality of life for someone who is going through this and their care partners,” said Crystal, who is planning a Wednesday, April 28, breakfast for a limited number of people. The breakfast will bring key businesses in the Lancaster County area that are already doing dementia work on board with the organization. “(The breakfast is about) how we can partner together to make this a dementia-friendly Lancaster County,” said Crystal. Those who wish to become involved with the organization may call 717-487-6223.

“Mane” Event Raises Funds For Greystone Manor Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), a therapeutic riding center for children and adults with special needs located on Hartman Station Road in Lancaster, held its inaugural virtual fundraiser on Jan. 16. Called “Garman Builders Presents the ‘Mane’ Event Virtual Gala,” the event was broadcast live at www.grey stonemanortrc.org from the Chestnut Hill Villa in Manheim. It featured prerecorded videos of clients and their stories, visits with the therapeutic services horses, and volunteer highlights. The full live presentation is still available for viewing on the aforementioned website. Through sponsorship from Garman Builders, Thrivent, and Deer Country Lawn & Farm Inc.; a gift from Kissel Valley Farm; and individual gifts and bids on auction items, the organization raised $47,000, exceeding its goal of raising $40,000 for its 40th anniversary.
The “Mane” Event gala is usually held in person at Bent Creek Country Club every fall, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, GMTRC recreated the structure of the event so that all supporters and those interested in learning about the mission could be involved. GMTRC plans to hold this fundraiser in person again in October 2021. For 40 years, GMTRC has been offering therapeutic riding lessons and equine-assisted learning to children and adults with special needs. Clients’ diagnoses vary widely and include Down syndrome, neurological injuries, autism, depression, and anxiety. GMTRC’s therapeutic riding program aids clients in overcoming some of the challenges associated with their diagnoses with the help of 12 specially trained horses and ponies. readers may learn more by visiting the aforementioned website.

During the pandemic and the subsequent changes to shopping, dining, and business practices, websites have been indispensable. “More and more during COVID, (the internet) becomes the place where transactions happen. (People are) placing orders and buying products (online),” explained marketing expert Adam Grim. “ Websites are the first impression for the business. In most cases these days, people are looking at your web-
site before they’re willing to have a call with you or stop by your location.” Grim has worked in digital marketing in Lancaster County for nearly a decade. With a business partner, he built Sparrow Websites before recently shifting his focus from doing the design work to helping business owners develop content and opening Bootstrap Local. “I have a passion for those businesses who have a great idea, a lot of grit and determination, but don’t have a huge budget for marketing,” Grim said.

www.mystorybrand.com to help with that process. Once the site is live on the web, the next thing is to update it on a regular basis through blog posts, video content, and voice recordings. These can be uncomfortable at first, Grim noted. “For most businesses, in order to grow, (owners) need to step out a bit,” Grim shared. “For a while, I didn’t like being on camera, so I didn’t do anything, but then I discovered podcasts. I got comfortable with them, and now I do videos.” Podcasts are a significant missed marketing opportunity, Grim said, as there are large databases of podcasts looking for guests. Even if a podcast is not local, the link will point back to the business page, which will improve rankings in search results. Other resources for business owners include www.canva.com for creating attractive visuals and www.answerthepublic.com for discovering what questions potential customers are asking. “(Go here) if you want to create helpful (website) content but don’t know where to start,” Grim advised. Readers may also visit https://lancaster.score.org and www.bootstraplocal.com for free resources. Those with questions may email Grim at adam@bootstraplocal.com.

Additionally, he offers marketing advice with Lancaster SCORE, which provides free mentoring and education for business owners and entrepreneurs. “I’m on my second business, but I got a SCORE mentor. She’s been fantastic,” Grim commented. “Every business should have a SCORE mentor.” With how important websites are, Grim advocated spending time, if not money, to develop one. Domain names can be purchased relatively inexpensively from Google, and free or low-cost site builders like Wix, Weebly, and Webs are available. Grim recommends using SquareSpace, which has a strong search engine optimization (SEO) framework that helps websites become visible in searches. Before starting, however, business owners should plan a good messaging strategy by identifying their target audience and how the business’ service or product can solve customers’ problems, and they should create a mood board, which will lead to the creation of a style guide.
