Quilting Days Return To Fairmount BY ANN MEAD ASH

Because Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator, is a quilter herself, she is well qualified to give a tour of the quilts-in-progress that women worked busily to complete on Feb. 16 - the third of the Quilting Days held in the Farm Crest Community Room at Fairmount this year. In 2021, Quilting Days was moved to New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, a little less than 2 miles from Fairmount, due to COVID-19 restrictions. No matter where Quilting Days is held, the event always features a number of quilts - nearly 10 this year - in a variety of colors and patterns, including Starburst, Log Cabin, and Twister. Quilts decorated with applique or with embroidery or cross-stitch were also plentiful. Colors ranged from a variety of pinks, cranberries, and purples to blue and white and one done in black, gold, and cream. Most of the quilts were queen and king sizes, but a few doubles and twins were also completed. Members of the Christian artists group Gather In will hold a Good Friday exhibit at Green Dragon Farmers Market.

Gather In To Hold Show At Green Dragon BY ANN MEAD ASH

rtist David Moore has been studying with the Lancaster Mennonite Conference STEP (Study and Training for Effective Pastoral ministry) Program for nearly three years. “The final project is a missional outreach,” explained Moore, who noted that he struggled to come up with an original missional experience. “A couple months ago, the Lord said, ‘Why not do an art show at Green Dragon?’” Moore decided to hold

A

the show on Good Friday. “The idea is to turn people’s thoughts to Christ with artwork,” he noted. On Friday, April 15, Gather In, a group of Christian artists of which Moore is a member, will hold an exhibition at Green Dragon Farmers Market, 955 N. State St., Ephrata, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Among the artists who take part will be woodworkers, watercolorists, carvers, metalworkers, painters, abstract artists, and cartoonists. Other artists in the group are considering what they will bring.

Gary Greene is a landscape painter who paints and teaches watercolor. He and his wife, Pat, are both Gather In members. Rather than bringing his own work, Gary described a page from a newspaper that he clipped long ago and had laminated to display. “(It’s of) Jesus as a little boy with Joseph working at his carpenter bench,” Gary explained. “Jesus is crawling around on the floor and picks up a spike (like the one that will later secure him to the cross) to play with. It blew me away,” said Gary, who added that

Pat will give away rawhide bracelets that tell the salvation story with different colored beads. Gather In member and abstract artist Isabell Clark is organizing a display at Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene in York. “I have gathered other artists in our church, and we are doing pieces that correspond with our Lenten focus,” said Clark, who noted that the group has created a gallery space within the sanctuary for visitors to engage with the art. She plans to bring a piece from that display to the Green Dragon exhibit. See Gather In pg 5

moving the annual auction online. For 2021, many of the activities associated with the event returned, but the fundraiser was held at New Covenant Mennonite Church. This year’s barbecue will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10. Although all the details of this year’s chicken barbecue have yet to be determined, the event generally includes a variety of children’s activities, such as a candy drop, along with the chicken barbecue meals and auctions. All funds raised by the event help the Sharing Fund, which covers the cost of care for residents who have exhausted their financial resources. According to Fairmount stewardship director Peter Passage, $2.5 million was budgeted this fiscal year for those costs for 2022. Fairmount, a nonprofit retirement community founded in 1968, is located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit https://fairmount homes.org.

“They have had a good turnout (of quilters),” noted Swailes, who pointed out that Quilting Days was held on Feb. 12, 15, and 16, attracting about 200 quilters to the venue. Swailes had spoken to quilter Vera Nolt, who was given a number of squares decorated with crossstitched tulips and other flowers in navy and light blue on white. Nolt put together a quilt top in coordinating colors using a Nine Patch and Star pattern surrounding the cross-stitched pieces and then brought the top to the event to be quilted. Another quilt that utilized cross-stitched patches involved colorful pink roses on a cream background with pink and purple squares arranged like chainwork around them. Quilting Days are held yearly to complete a number of quilts that will then be sold at auction during Fairmount’s annual chicken barbecue in the fall. During 2020, Fairmount streamlined its Sharing Fund benefit by holding chicken barbecue sales off-site and

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) welcomes its third music director finalist Michael Butterman to conduct its next masterwork series, “Awaken.” Performances will take place on Friday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 9, at 3 and 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster. A free pre-concert lecture will begin one hour before the performance times. Additionally, free/paywhat-you-can performance will occur on Thursday, April 7, at 7 p.m. as part of the LSO’s Neighborhood Series. The concert will feature Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis”; Richter’s “Spring” from his recomposition of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”; and Respighi’s “Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. 1.” The central work will be Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony, in which the composer sought to honor Ukraine, incorporating numerous Ukrainian folk songs and melodies. The LSO has retitled this work “The Ukrainian.” A portion of the concert’s ticket sales will be directed to Ukrainian relief efforts. The LSO will be partnering with the Ukraine War Refugee Aid Fund set up by Bethany Slavic Church in Ephrata to accept donations. Ticket prices range and can be purchased in advance by calling the LSO box office at 717-291-6440 or visiting www.lancastersymphony.org.

Born and raised in Ephrata, Heather Hornberger is a selftaught artist who has been expressing her creativity ever since she was a child. Growing up, Hornberger recalls making collages and little art projects for her family and friends during her free time. However, it wasn’t until her mid-20s when she was working as a nurse that she started painting, which she used as an emotional outlet to deal with stress, anxiety, and depression. Since then, Hornberger has lived on the island of Hawaii, resided near the Blue Ridge

Mountains in North Carolina, and settled among the thousands of acres of forest in the wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains. Over the years, she has worked on organic vegetable farms across the country and even attended massage school. Hornberger’s life has taken many paths, with painting coming and going during her travels. After moving to Lititz from a farm in Hawaii in 2017, Hornberger began painting more frequently again. “The past couple of years have been challenging regarding mental health, and painting has really been a saving grace,” stated Hornberger.

For more information, visit www.mulberryartstudios.com. For those who want to pursue art, Hornberger has some advice. “Don’t let fear or selfdoubt keep you from creating,” she said. “Don’t worry if it’s good or not. Just do it. If it makes your soul happy, just do it. And if people happen to like it, bonus. But creating from the heart is freedom. You can’t do it wrong when you are coming from your heart.”

“When my insides are swirling and I can’t seem to settle my thoughts, I turn to the canvas and am able to express what I cannot put into words.” One of the most unique aspects of the creative process, according to Hornberger, is being able to express oneself without having to use words. Painting gives her a safe space to lose herself in creating while being totally present at the same time. Hornberger views the finished product as a snapshot of what was going on in her internal and external environments in that moment in time. Her newest collection of colorful abstract paintings, titled “Finding Home,” will be on display in the main gallery at Mulberry Art Studios during the month of April. The public is invited to meet the artist and view the artwork at the opening reception, which will be held on Friday, April 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the gallery, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. This will be Hornberger’s first gallery showing. “I hope that this exhibit challenges the viewer to explore how they find home when the ground seems to be shifting or life gets overwhelming,” said Hornberger. “For me, painting brings me home, no matter where in the world I am.” David Fishel’s “Esoteric Images - Beyond Photography” will also be on view during the month of April and

collaboration with local microbreweries. “For me, the most rewarding part of my work is community meeting people along the way and sharing passions for collecting and knowledge,” McEvoy noted. “Ours is a big subject that intersects with every aspect of life, and we as individuals cannot hope to know it all. This is why I strongly believe it is critically important to promote and deliver the NAWCC’s core values and strengthen its foundations for the future study of clocks and watches.” As McEvoy and his wife, Kaai, settle into their new home, he admits there have been some moments of culture shock. “I’ve been a bit confused about the weather I’ve experienced so far,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve seen winter, summer and spring all rolled into one.” He’s also learning that being from

Time is on Rory McEvoy’s mind. As the new executive director of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Inc. (NAWCC), McEvoy will oversee the operations of the Columbia headquarters and continue to connect with watch and clock enthusiasts around the world. McEvoy brings a wealth of experience in horology, the study of timekeeping, clocks and watches. Prior to joining NAWCC, he lived in England, where he taught horological theory and history and the practical repair and making of clocks and watches at the Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery. Previously, he served as curator of horology at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. He has also operated his own antique clock business and overseen clock sales for Bonhams auctioneers. McEvoy said several things attracted him to the position

and prompted him to move to Lancaster County. “We have an absolutely fabulous collection here at the museum,” he said, noting that he had visited the headquarters, located at 514 Poplar St., three years ago. He said his goals for the job include promoting all the NAWCC offers, including the museum that houses North America’s largest collection of timepieces from all over the world, the library and the research center. He is especially proud of the school that is located on-site, offering introductory hands-on courses in clocks, watches and machining. “I think this place has been one of Columbia’s, if not Pennsylvania’s, best-kept secrets,” he stated. “One of my priorities here is to raise awareness of what we do and get the community involved.” He said he’s still planning specifics for connecting with the community, but he hopes to continue popular events such as Hops ’n’ Clocks, a

among the museum’s corps of more than 150 active volunteers. A resident of Gettysburg, Cleveland has been a Friends member and a volunteer since 2012. His son, who was a member at the time, introduced him to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Cleveland still has his original model train set, which he won as the second prize in a coloring contest in the ninth grade. He said that, in that case, he specifically hoped to take second place. He also recalled seeing the “Train of Tomorrow,” an American demonstrator

train built as a collaboration between General Motors and Pullman, during its barnstorming tour of the United States in the late 1940s. In addition to his interest in trains, Cleveland is a longtime collector of stamps and coins. Cleveland will be formally recognized by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission at a ceremony in Harrisburg in the spring. He will also be recognized during the Railroad Museum’s annual Members Day banquet at The Wyndham Hotel & Resort in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania preserves a collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, and houses a vast research library and archives, a working restoration shop, an immersive education center and a museum store. Open yearround, the museum offers several unique special events, tours, and exhibits. To learn about the museum’s volunteer opportunities, contact Elizabeth Myers, volunteer/program coordinator, at 717687-8628. To learn more about the museum, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.

Even as a baby, Hunter Bristow loved trains. “We call him the train master,” said his grandma Donna Frias. In early March, Hunter got to experience the ride of a lifetime when Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley arranged for the 10-year-old from Lititz to spend the day as a train engineer with Amtrak. Hunter was born with osteochondrodysplasia, a rare hereditary bone and cartilage condition. After a surgical mistake three years ago, he was paralyzed and now uses a wheelchair to get around.

Although he was eligible for his wish in 2019, he had to wait a few years due to the pandemic. When the big day finally arrived, Hunter was all smiles as he got ready to board the train at the Lancaster Amtrak station. “Ever since he’s been a little kid, we’ve been buying him toy trains and taking him on train rides,” noted Hunter’s father, Daniel Bristow. “He probably has thousands and thousands of trains at home. He’s always looking for new ones and different ones.” Hunter’s love of trains might come from his grandfather Herland Frias, who is a retired Amtrak worker. “From

Our Mother of Perpetual Help School (OMPH School) celebrated theme days during Catholic Schools Week in early February. One of the themes, “Celebrating Our Community,” led the students to give back to the Ephrata community by donating to an organization. OMPH School chose to aid Good Samaritan after learning that the organization keeps a wish list of everyday items it needs most. OMPH School families donated paper products, cleaning products, and food items. Donations were presented to Good Samaritan representative Juliana Dudley

by OMPH principal Mrs. Snyder and OMPH students. OMPH School students also collected snack items and made cards for the local police department and fire station. The care packages were delivered at the end of Catholic Schools Week and accepted by Officers Rodriguez and Himeisen. Enrollment is open at OMPH School. The school is open to children from the local Catholic churches, as well as interested members of the general community. For more information, call 717-738-2414 or visit www.omphschool.com.

Alignable.com, an online referral network for small businesses, has chosen Kristen Hertzog as Ephrata’s 2022 Businessperson of the Year. The result was announced after a national search for leaders who have gone above and beyond guiding peers and supporting entire communities as they strive to recover. The 2022 contest marked a 64% increase in participation over last year. In all, 2,400-plus small business owners were elected by their peers to be their local Businesspeople of the Year across the U.S. and Canada. During the contest, which ran from Jan. 10 to Feb. 11, more than 160,000 votes and more than 32,000 testimonials were posted praising thousands of local leaders for helping their peers and communities through a turbulent year with many challenges. Hertzog is the co-owner and CEO of Hertzog Homestead LLC, a 23-acre hospitality complex in Ephrata. It includes a bed-and-breakfast; a rustic barn event venue; the Limestone Gift Shoppe, which features items created by more than 15 local crafters; and 20 acres of preserved farmland. The property has been in the Hertzog family since 1776. More information is available at www.hertzoghomestead.com. Hertzog has created unique ways to help provide partnerships with local caterers, florists, photographers, coordinators and other event-related businesses through the Hertzog Homestead event venue. She has also helped local crafters struggling to start small businesses with business coaching through her Limestone Gift Shoppe. Her influence reached far beyond the local community, and she used her Harvard certification in leadership coaching strategies to coach Ephrata business leaders and others as far away as Haiti.
