When Monica DePaul, artistic director for Cavod Theatre, considered producing “The Diary of Anne Frank,” she wondered if the actors might struggle with the material. “I thought … it would be hard for the actors to embrace the reality of the situation,” she said. Then DePaul sat in on auditions. Impressed with the quality of the actors’ abilities, she had no doubts about their ability to portray the gravity of the show. “The Diary of Anne Frank,” directed by Alicia Burton, will be presented at the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, April 9 and 16; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, April 10 and 17; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, April 11 and 18. See Cavod pg 4

BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, is currently operating in six locations in Lebanon, Chester, and Lancaster counties and the state of Delaware. The decades-old ministry is part of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International in Ephrata. In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry. “Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. Anne Frank, who will be played by Audrey Pavlica, was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and moved with her family to the Netherlands when the Nazis gained control of Germany. By May 1940, the Franks were trapped in Amsterdam due to the German occupation. They went into hiding in July 1942, in the building where Anne’s father, Otto Frank, played by Caleb Zimmerman, worked. From then until the family’s arrest by the Gestapo in August 1944, Anne kept a diary she had received as a birthday present. Following their arrest, the Franks were taken to concentration camps. In the fall of 1944, Anne and her sister, Margot, played by Jada Correll, were moved from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they died a few months later. Otto, the only survivor of the family, returned to Amsterdam after the war to find that Anne’s diary had been saved by one of the family’s helpers, Miep Gies, played by Hannah Rau. Otto’s efforts led to the diary’s publication in 1947. Another focus is the constancy of life in spite of difficult circumstances. “There’s the coming-of-age

relationship between Anne and Peter van Pels, played by Mike Myers,” noted DePaul. “You still have to grow up … whether you’re in comfort and splendor or in an attic in hiding. There can be fun, beauty, and excitement in blossoming no matter where you are.” DePaul hopes that Anne’s outlook shines through the sadness of the subject matter. “There was a lot of joy in the nearly two years they spent in hiding,” DePaul said. “(Anne is) growing up. (The Franks are) being a family together, and there are conflicts, and they work through those conflicts, but they still have joy. I think that’s an important message.” While DePaul hopes audiences are struck by the gravity and depth of the play, she would like them to also see the hope as well. “Struggles are real, and we should come to them face-to-face,” she said. “(But in the end), do we believe in humanity, and if not, what are the consequences?” Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

When your flock is made up of some of the most vulnerable among us, a pandemic will cause you to be very cautious. For Larry Dunlap, pastor of Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church (BIHUMC), whose congregation is mostly octogenarians, holding church services over the past year has been tricky. “Only six of our people have internet access, so it didn’t make much sense to stream the services,” said Dunlap, who has been keeping in touch with members via cards and phone calls and visiting when it was safe. The church was open from May through November 2020 with safety precautions in place. On March 7, BIHUMC opened its doors for the first time in 2021 for live worship. One weekly service was held at 9 a.m. with a variety of safety measures in place. The use of masks and social distancing were in practice at the church when it was open in 2020.
“The chairs are already six feet apart, but we allow couples to sit next to each other,” said Dunlap, who noted that a machine that sanitizes an individual’s hands and takes his or her temperature is stationed at the door. “We will have Communion using fellowship cups that have the grape juice and wafer in one container,” explained Dunlap. “You take the wafer and eat that and take the other side and drink the grape juice.” The church secretary places bulletins on the chairs prior to the service. “You find your chair and what you need for the worship service is there,” said Dunlap. Congregants sing wearing masks, but Dunlap also added responsive readings of the psalms to the service as an adjunct to the hymns. Dunlap even scheduled a sermon that dove into a COVID-19-related topic. “My first sermon was about being inundated with news,” shared Dunlap, who went on a 30-day news fast from the beginning of February

Teachers can now bring the Historic Ephrata Cloister into their classroom with a series of new virtual visits to the museum. The set of interactive lessons, called Obed’s Classroom, is named for Brother Obed, the first teacher in Ephrata, who opened a school in the 1740s. These virtual visits feature four areas of the traditional field trip: the life of early residents, the printing of the “Martyrs’ Mirror,” the Colonial doctor, and the oneroom schoolhouse. Each of the four lessons lasts about 30 minutes. Teachers can schedule the four lessons on the same day or divide the visits between days. The lessons in Obed’s Classroom combine live narration, photographs, object show and tell, and activities for

$2.5 million in uncompensated care for Fairmount residents annually. In 2020, the auction segment of the event was held online with items being previewed and picked up at New Covenant. The drive-through chicken barbecue was held there as well. About a dozen of the approximately 30 quilts prepared for the 2020 auction were completed during Quilting Days. According to Passage, the quilts brought in about $14,000 of the more than $91,000 raised by the partial event. The 2021 Fairmount Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 11, at Fairmount. Passage said the format of this year’s event will depend on a number of factors. At this point, Passage is happy to see work on the quilts progressing. “A lot of people come together to do something like this,” he said. “We are very happy (that they do).” More information about the mission of Fairmount may be found at https://fairmounthomes.org.
