Hand-In-Hand Mud Sale To Return Lancaster County Carriage And Antique Auction Scheduled

ake King and Amy Wissing, two of the organizers of the Handin-Hand Fire Company mud sale, are grateful for the volunteers who take part. “The community support behind this thing …” said King. “It’s astounding,” Wissing finished for him. “There are so many people involved who are not firefighters and don’t have family members who are firefighters.” The mud sale, an outdoor annual consignment auction that was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, will take place this year on Thursday, June 24, and Friday, June 25, and will feature five auction blocks. In addition to carriages, antiques, collectibles, plant nursery items, tools, and more will be up for bids. On June 24, food will be served beginning at 3 p.m., and the auction will take place from 3:30 to 8 p.m. On June 25, the auction will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. As in the past, the auction will be located in the large field along Route 340

across from the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant. The GPS address for the location is 338 N. Ronks Road, Bird-in-Hand.

“There are so many people involved who are not firefighters and don’t have family members who are firefighters.” Wissing shared that pizza and wings will be available on the night of June 24. King noted that the auction blocks will feature antiques and collectibles, crafts, plant nursery items, flowers, small tack, and tools, along with field rows. Wissing pointed out that field row items are often unusual or unique. “(Items) could be equipment, old windows, old furniture. There are major treasures sometimes like iron statues and anvils,” she stated, adding that old Salvation Army uniforms have been among the finds.

King said the June 25 auction will begin with antiques, collectibles, and field row items. He noted that tack, other horse-related items, and plant nursery items like flowers and shrubbery will also be sold. “Scattered throughout the day will be crafts, mini horses and ponies, furniture, and carriages,” he said. Wissing noted that the furniture that goes up for bids often includes a mix of old and new items and that often larger donated items are featured. “If people keep some items aside while they’re spring cleaning and bring them to the sale, that would be wonderful,” said Wissing. See Mud Sale pg 6

The last Lancaster County Carriage and Antique Auction (also known as the Hand-inHand mud sale), which benefits the Hand-in-Hand Fire Company, was held in 2019. This year’s outdoor fundraiser is scheduled for June 24 and 25 in Bird-in-Hand.

CVHS To Drive In To “Grease” BY ANN MEAD ASH

After the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) play was canceled several times in the fall of 2020, V. Gabriel Whitman, director of the show, sought a spring musical that would make sense to perform outdoors. He hit upon the perfect production - “Grease.” “We could have done any show outside, but this fits the theme,” said Whitman, who is currently overseeing rehearsals for the show, which will be produced outside in a drive-in setting for two of its upcoming performances.

CVHS will present “Grease” in the school auditorium, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Wednesday, April 7, and Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m. On Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10, at 7 p.m., shows will be held drive-in style in the Witmer parking lot adjacent to the stadium. The play, set in the 1950s, tells the senior year story of a classic good girl/bad boy romance at fictional Rydell High. The Burger Palace Boys are enthralled by the summer fling of their leader, Danny Zuko, played by Devin Nafziger, with out-of-towner Sandy Dumbrowski, played by Jenna Rychener. Sparks fly when Danny and Sandy, who never expected to see each other again, discover that they attend the same school. Sandy is befriended by Frenchy, played by Holly Butler, who is a member of the Pink Ladies, led by Rizzo, played by Anya Ditzler, who is the girlfriend of Danny’s sidekick Kenickie Murdoch, played by Jesse Kanagy. Will Roland plays Roger, another of the Burger Palace Boys, and Chris Needham plays

Jenna Rychener (left) and Devin Nafziger will play the leads in the 1950s-inspired “Grease,” which will play at Conestoga Valley High School April, 7 to 11, with two performances held outside, drive-in style. CONESTOGA VALLEY EDITION

Sonny LaTieri, the leader of the T-Birds, a rival gang. The presentation is based on the play with a few added tunes from the well-known movie version. As Danny and Sandy, Nafziger and Rychener feel a lot of responsibility for the success of the show. “There’s a lot of weight on our shoulders because everyone is counting on us to do the songs well, the dancing well, and the acting well,” said Nafziger. “We are constantly rehearsing.” Rychener is thankful for the chance to play a lead because of the way it has encouraged her to grow. “I had faith that I could do it, but I have not had huge roles before,’ she noted. “This has caused me to move out of my comfort zone (and) inspired me to work harder.” Whitman was happy to partner with several other CVHS clubs on the show. “TSA is doing lighting and helping with sound, and they are allowing us to use their FM transmitter from the light show they do (for our drivein) performances,” he explained. Whitman said that the high-energy “Grease” was a good choice because students are familiar with the story and the music, and he felt they would be motivated to perform. His enthusiasm for the show has caught on with the leads, who hope to pass it to audience members. “I want audiences to come out of the show exhilarated,” said Rychener. “I want them to have fun just being the audience to (catch our) energy,” added Nafziger. Tickets for all performances are available at www.showtix4u.com by searching for “Conestoga Valley High School.” Questions may be emailed to cvhsmusical@mail.com.

While Dienner noted that most of the items will be surprises, she shared that Darla’s Hair Care and Spa in Intercourse has donated a day in the salon that will include pedicures, manicures, and massages. A silent auction will open online at https://cavod.org on Monday, May 3, and remain open through Sunday, May 9. Dienner said that organizers have set a goal of offering 50 items, among which will be a handmade quilt, an Escape Room Lancaster gift card, tickets to Dutch Wonderland, an overnight stay at the Cartoon Network Hotel, and gift certificates to local restaurants. Another goal the organization has set for the gala is to have 50 watch parties happening around the county during the event. To encourage watch parties, organizers have set up a special delivery for those who contact Cavod for their complimentary access. “(Watch party hosts) will have a charcuterie board, a bottle of wine, and flowers delivered to their home by a Cavod student in a costume,” shared Dienner. “We will drop everything you need at your door so you can sit with your family and watch or have it on your deck with your friends.” The link to the event will be available through the Cavod website and by searching for “Cavod Academy of the Arts” on Facebook. Dienner encouraged those who wish to hold watch parties to email connie@cavod.org or call 717-989-3436.

Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod Academy of the Arts in New Holland, has spent the last 20 years establishing a godly environment where students can create with purpose. Her purpose for the virtual 2021 fundraising gala she is currently planning is to show that to the Lancaster community. “(This gala is) for people to really be able to see that Cavod is not just about dance and theater,” said Dienner. “This is a community where people come and support one another and see their kids grow.” In her current role as executive director, Dienner witnesses that growth. “We see (students) come out of their shell and learn disciplines,” she said. Cavod will hold its virtual gala on Thursday, May 6. The preshow will begin at 7:15 p.m., and the show, which will be hosted by Vinnie DePaul and auctioneer David Keller, will be streamed from Rock Lititz at 7:30 p.m. Dienner noted that the event will feature a variety of entertainment, including live and prerecorded singing and dancing performances, spoken word poetry, and a visit from the Cavod Ensemble. Among the many entertaining presentations, Dienner was especially excited about a segment where DePaul will question young Cavod students in a feature reminiscent of Art Linkletter. “We are filming Vinnie asking children from Cavod what they like about Cavod,” said Dienner. Lighthouse Vocational Sets Maker’s Market In December 2019, Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) began offering a program called Strengthening Pathways. The program provides a variety of activities that are based on interests of LVS participants. Among the many activities is an art program that includes art lessons in painting and other crafts. Individuals taking part have produced watercolor greeting cards, painted canvases, decorated glassware, candles, and more. The creativity of the Lighthouse participants inspired LVS staff members to schedule a maker’s market to be held in the LVS parking lot, 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market will feature items made by Pathways program participants, along with the work of 20 vendors selling jewelry, watercolor paintings,

and build-your-own terrarium kits, among other items. Four food trucks will be on-site to offer food for purchase to hungry attendees. In addition to the many handmade items that will be for sale, LVS is introducing its cookbook, which will be sold at a discount online prior to the event. “It will be available for presale (Sunday), April 18, through (Friday, April) 23, online,” explained LVS events coordinator Katie Martin, who added that preordered copies may be picked up at the market, and regularly priced books may be purchased there as well. Cookbooks and other LVS items may be purchased online at www.lighthousevoc.org/shop. Those who would like to help LVS purchase art supplies for the market may visit https://a.co/0zyeUUS. Many of the LVS programs shut down in March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. For participants who work

in the community under the Employment Services program, there was no break. Community Participation Services, which includes outings with staff members and volunteer work, is now up and running, and the Pathways program is partially open with both in-person and virtual activities. LVS program specialist Jen Swanson reported that Pathways online classes were back on track within two weeks of the shutdown. “We started on a small scale,” said Swanson, who noted that now more than 25 classes are offered. Swanson shared that more than 25 participants are now taking part in classes that range from cooking to Bible studies. Other classes focus on music, theater, sign language, and School of Croc, which utilizes a program created by Gatorland USA. Individuals who are interested in helping with the classes may email jenswanson@lighthousevoc.org.

Cloister To Offer Virtual Field Trips Teachers can now bring the Historic Ephrata Cloister into their classroom with a series of new virtual visits to the museum. The set of interactive lessons, called Obed’s Classroom, is named for Brother Obed, the first teacher in Ephrata, who opened a school in the 1740s. These virtual visits feature four areas of the traditional field trip: the life of early residents, the printing of the “Martyrs’ Mirror,” the Colonial doctor, and the one-room schoolhouse. Each of the four lessons lasts about 30 minutes. Teachers can schedule the four lessons on the same day or divide the visits between days. The lessons in Obed’s Classroom combine live narration, photographs, object show and tell, and

Details about all of these school programs can be found by visiting www.ephratacloister.org and clicking on “School Programs” under “Education.” For more details, to discuss accommodations, and to arrange to bring this virtual experience to a classroom, contact museum educator Michael Showalter at mishowalte@pa.gov or call 717733-6600 and leave a message. Historic Ephrata Cloister is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Assistance for the educational programs is provided by the nonprofit Ephrata Cloister Associates, an organization dedicated to the support of this National Historic Landmark.

activities for students to do on their side of the computer screen. The lessons can accommodate 30 students at a time. A packet of essential questions, background information, and follow-up materials accompanies each lesson. Teachers are required to attend a brief preconference visit with the museum educator prior to the first live classroom visit to review the technology and the classroom procedures. There is a fee for the lesson series, with a discount for schools with more than one classroom using the series. All four lessons will be featured on a special Homeschool Day on Friday, April 16, and again on Friday, May 14. These activities are designed for homeschooling families.

YWCA Lancaster will host its annual Race Against Racism with an interactive/educational twist, as this year’s event will offer a history lesson along with the race. The Race Your Way Race Against Racism will run from Saturday, April 24, through Saturday, May 22.

“This is an opportunity to use our 5K course through Lancaster with an opportunity to learn about various historic sites or make your own race in your neighborhood, on your treadmill or any other way that works for you,” explained Stacie Blake, CEO of YWCA Lancaster. This is the 23rd consecutive year for the race, making it the longest-

running Race Against Racism in the country, she noted. As always, the race is a fundraiser for the YWCA’s programs. This year’s race supports the new Center for Racial and Gender Equity. “This is a division of YWCA that focuses on education, advocacy and community engagement in our quest to create an equitable community for all residents,” Blake stated. Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies was founded by Amos and Rachel Zook back in 2001. They sold the business to Lee & Rose Anna King (daughter and son-in-law) in 2007 and it has now moved from Harvest Drive to a new location at 3427 Lincoln Hwy East, Paradise, PA 17562. This building had been known as the National Christmas Center for the last 20 years and originally was a restaurant known as The Dutch Town & Country Inn. One option for this year’s race will be to utilize a self-guided course through Lancaster city with a curated Race Against Racism playlist featuring music and spoken word about historic stops along the route. “This year we wanted to make a stronger connection with our important mission of eliminating racism and empowering women,” Blake said. “Our first step was to work with the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania to identify six key sites of historical significance to African Americans in Lancaster. Our professional race coordinator used these points to map and measure a new 5K course.” Information will be recorded about the sites and will be interspersed with music to create a Spotify playlist. “The playlist was culled from suggestions of our Social Justice Training Team, and you will find some moving, motivating and inspiring music on this mix,” she remarked. “We are excited about the new course, which still starts and ends at Musser Park, just around the corner from YWCA Lancaster.”

Wagner has been directing rehearsals for the 46 students in the cast, crew, and orchestra. She noted that the students’ masks make it harder for her to judge the work of the ensemble, but she praised the singers in the lead roles and noted that many members of the small orchestra will need to play more than one instrument during the performance. Wagner noted that creating convincing underwater scenes through choreography, staging, lighting, and costumes is also a challenge. During a year of uncertainty, Wagner said she is happy to offer students roles playing the iconic Disney characters. “They needed something they love and can grab on to,” she said.

“‘The Little Mermaid’ is the story of Ariel, played by Sheridan Riva, a mermaid princess with a beautiful singing voice, who lives in an undersea kingdom. Ariel should be content, but she desires the one thing she cannot have: life on land. When Ariel recues a human prince named Eric, played by Henry Greiner, from a storm at sea and falls in love with him, she is even more determined to realize her dream. She defies her father, King Triton, played by Zac Snyder, and bargains with sea witch Ursula, played by Kati Lyle, who demands Ariel’s voice in exchange for entry into Prince Eric’s world. With help from Flounder, played by Oliver Hughes; Scuttle, played by Caroline Erb; and Sebastian, played by Isabelle Titzer, Ariel works to gain the love of the prince without being able to speak. If they fail, she will lose her soul to Ursula. The show will be presented at the school to a limited audience by invitation. The stream will be available from Sunday, April 18, through Sunday, May 2, at 7 p.m. each evening. Tickets to watch the streamed show may be purchased through the Fine and Performing

According to Bryant Glick, who is organizing the first Pickin’ in the Park with Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy, the event was in the planning stages before the COVID-19 shutdown in March 2020. “This has been in the works for 16 months,” said Glick. “Terre Hill borough is graciously allowing us to hold this,” he added. The first Pickin’ in the Park event, which will include the Keystone Steak Cook-Off, an antique and artisan swap meet, food vendors, and live music, will be held in the Terre Hill Community Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Saturday, May 1, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds of the event will be donated to the Weaverland Valley Fire Department. Admission is free, and the event will be held rain or shine. “We wanted to do a steak competition (with) an antiques side for Bill and Linda, (who own Tannery Antiques),” explained Glick, who worked with a steak competition organizer to promote the Keystone Steak Cook-Off, which will include more than 40 professional grilling teams vying for a $1,000 first-place prize. A chicken wing contest will be held as well. A nominal fee is required to enter, and a cash prize will be awarded to the winner. The antique and artisan swap meet, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include more than 35 vendors. Glick noted that an antiques event called Oddities Bazaar Market will be held in Adamstown in conjunction with Pickin’ in the Park. The Oddities Bryant Glick displays a fire rescue insignia.

Reading Road, Adamstown. “We will have a variety of food,” said Glick of the more than 10 food trucks and vendors lined up to offer food for purchase at Terre Hill Community Park. Among those will be Hen House Grilling, Lickity Split, Auntie Anne’s, and Holy Smoked Meats. In addition, the Garden Spot High School Grassland FFA will sell milkshakes, and LANCO Performing Arts will sell food items from the concession stand in the main park pavilion. Musical entertianment by Dane Fox will begin at after noon. Glick emphasized that the event was designed to appeal to people of all ages. “It is family-friendly,” said Glick, noting that the Terre Hill Timbers playground is located in the park. “It’s not just an antique event and craft show and steak competition. We wanted to do an event that encompassed family.” Questions about the steak cookoff may be directed to Pickininthe ParkPA@gmail.com. Fish Story - Second Blue Skies Fundraiser Scheduled

Association Earns Honor

In the spring of 2020, when many events had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls, an outdoor event, was held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation (Camp Mack), 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown. The fundraiser, the brainchild of Cub Scout Case Baccio, was organized to help send veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes to the 2020 Warrior Weekend held in July. “(The tournament) went really well,” said Case, a member of Cub Scout Pack 93, who is now a fourth-grader at Bucher Elementary School. “We were able to raise more than $4,000, and there were quite a few people there.” Buoyed by the success of the 2020 event, Case, along

Lady Bucks Battle Gov. Mifflin, Middletown

BY LEAH SINTIC

Lady Bucks softball is on the cusp of success after opening their season with losses to Governor Mifflin (5-4) and Middletown (2-1) by the slimmest of margins. On the 29th, CV faced Governor Mifflin and got out to a strong start, holding a 3-1 advantage at the close of the first. Mifflin never scored more than one run in an inning but slowly chipped away at the Bucks to tie it up 3-3 after the third. The Bucks scored a final time in the fifth but Mifflin managed to level the game again in the seventh and cross the winning run in the ninth. Churning the offensive momentum was CV sophomore Becca Hartranft who knocked in all three runs. Payton Stoeckl struck out five batters during six innings of work from

the circle and Rhiannon Henry fanned another five while pitching three innings in relief. Middletown struck early with a first inning run in the teams’ March 27th meeting but no further runs crossed the plate until the sixth when CV’s Laken Smith utilized one of her two hits to push the equalizer across. Unfortunately, Middletown responded in the bottom of the inning and brought home the go-ahead run to clinch the contest. Stoeckl was saddled with the loss and struck out three during her six innings in the circle, and Kassie Horning had two hits in the loss. “We are battling through injuries of key players but are building a very talented team of smart student athletes,” encouraged head coach Dennis Ryan. “We are battling and competing every pitch and plan to continue to do so throughout the season.”

Darren Burkholder collected four RBIs in the runaway win, with Abdiel Fernandez adding three, and another two from Tucker Hastings. Gavin Fisher secured the win on the mound, striking out thirteen batters over five innings. TENNIS CV’s early tennis matches have held a little bit of everything, and the squad holds a 1-3 record after four contests. Shaking off a 7-0 opening loss to Cedar Crest on March 22, the Bucks bounced back to hand Garden spot a 7-0 defeat on the 25th. Yuji Wenger, Nolan High, Luke Taylor and Grady Ray each produced a singles win in straight sets as well as doubles wins in the sweep. Wenger partnered with Henry McQuate Krahnke for an 8-3 doubles victory, High and Taylor blanked their opponents 8-0, and Ray was joined by Jason Schlegelmilch for an 8-0 win. A tightly contested clash with Penn Manor went 4-3 to the Comets, with CV points coming from High and Taylor in singles play, and Schlegelmilch and Nolan Miller in doubles. In a subsequent 5-2 loss to Cocalico, High brought in the lone singles victory for CV and joined up with Taylor for a doubles win as well. “Nolan High is stepping up when competing in both singles and in doubles with his partner, Luke Taylor,” commented coach Dale Gregg. “They are providing solid play together and gaining points for the team.” GIRLS’ LACROSSE Photo by Cheri Sine Kylie Metzler drops a bunt for the Buck- Just two games into skins during their 2-1, nonleague loss to the season the undefeated Lady Bucks lacrosse host Middletown on March 27. BASEBALL Patience and a series of walks marked the seventh inning in CV baseball’s second win of the season, topping Lampeter-Strasburg 3-2 in a walk-off win on March 31st. The contest was tied at two apiece heading into the bottom of the final inning, when CV’s Ethan Weaver drew the fourth walk of the frame to drive home Josh Pattison for the victory. In the top of the inning, Buckskin defense got the job done, led by closing pitcher Logan Kline, who put out three in a row with a caught bunt and a pair of strikeouts to thwart the final chance for the Pioneers. Starting pitcher Sam Thompson laid the groundwork in the first five and a third innings striking out four and allowing just two runs. Gavin Fisher, Conner Esbenshade, and Thompson each supplied one hit. On March 26th, CV only needed four at bats to get the job done in a 13-2 win over Lancaster Mennonite to open the 2021 season.

On Jan. 22, soon-to-be Eagle Scout Sarah Marston delivered 26 books and accompanying story stones for each to the Discovery Corner Preschool in Lancaster city. “I was really excited about that,” said Marston, recalling the completion of her Eagle Scout project. Marston began work on the project in November of 2020, but her scouting journey began long before that when she was asked by two friends to take part in a Venture Crew canoe trip. “I already had my (summer) work schedule, and I was helping with the Conestoga Valley swim team,” recalled Marston. But when the Venture Crew started meeting the following September, Marston joined up. By the time she was 17, she was one of the first members of Scouts BSA Troop 82 in Brownstown. Nine young Lancaster women joined Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouting) in December 2018. At that time Marston became eligible for an Eagle Scout extension, which gave her until February 2021 to complete requirements for an Eagle Scout Award. Marston developed the story stone idea with her mother, a former preschool teacher, who helped her collect a number of children’s books. Marston paired each book with about 10 small river stones donated by Penn Stone. Marston coordinated the effort, which involved distributing the books and the stones to fellow Scouts,

family members, and other members of the community, with the goal that volunteer painters would paint stones with characters or scenes from each story. “I distributed the books with the goal of having 20 come back for the preschool,” said Marston. While the Elizabethtown College freshman was home for the holidays, she picked up completed rocks and books. “It was a little hectic at times because I was driving all over the county, but it worked out,” said Marston, who used a spray sealer on the stones when they were returned to her to make it easy for children to use them without the paint coming off. Some of the titles Marston collected for the school included “Count the Monkeys,” “Owl Moon,” and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” According to Marston, teachers can use the stones to assess for comprehension, teach the alphabet, or gauge progress. “I wanted to do something that would help young children learn,” shared Marston, who is undertaking seven years of postsecondary education to become a physical therapist. “I love helping people learn new things.” Marston expressed excitement over each step of her journey to Eagle Scout, including her board of review, the final step to getting her award, which was held on Feb. 2. “(The review) celebrates all the accomplishments you’ve had so far and looks forward. The whole thing was a great experience,” Marston said.

“For many years, people who knew me said I should write a book,” said Tom Grassel, a man who has been referred to as the mayor of Conestoga, a town that has no such official designation. “I was never a writer, and I never liked to write.” One day, following the March 2020 COVID-19 shutdown, that changed. “I started to write, and I wrote it all out by hand,” recalled Tom. Tom’s life, which began on Lime Street in Lancaster in 1939, has had more twists and turns than some mystery novels. Friends who recognized his unique situation encouraged Tom to share his story. The recently published “Through My Eyes - The Memoirs of Thomas D. Grassel” follows Tom’s life from the beginning, noting the many families that took him in as a child, and continuing through his time as a teenage farm hand and through his marriage to Gerry, his wife of 60 years, and his many careers, including farmer, restaurant owner, blacktop paving business owner, and Mennonite minister. Along the way, the Grassels raised a family, dealt with fires and windstorms, and nearly lost their farm. “It’s in the book,” Tom said often during his interview when asked about the particulars of an experience. By the time Tom was 12, he had lived in three different homes. He began working as a farm hand for Chester Landis in the Greenfield area before moving in with the Weaver family in Conestoga at the age of 15. He finished high school at what was then Manor-Millersville High School, graduating at age 17. In the fall of 1958, he met Gerry, who lived in Bird-in-Hand, at the New Holland Farmers Fair. They married in 1961.

In 1963, Tom bought a Conestoga farm, borrowing money from two of the women who had cared for him as a child. He and Gerry raised tobacco, cows, chickens, hay, corn, and five children (four girls and a boy). In 1972, Tom was ordained as a Mennonite minister, and for the last several years, he has held a Sunday morning Bible study in his home. Tom is known for his love of trains. At 4 p.m. each day, a toy train on an elevated rail makes a trip around the Grassels’ farmhouse kitchen. In 1999, a one-foot gauge railroad became part of the landscape of the farm. “One of my friends called me and told me he bought a railroad engine,” recalled Tom. The train, which includes a mile of track and a tunnel, became a fixture at a yearly July Fourth celebration held to raise funds for the Conestoga Fire Company. Tom reported that one event attracted 7,000 people and 1,800 rode the train that day. The shelves of the Grassel kitchen are lined with painted carvings of all types and styles, all completed by Tom, who is self-taught. The figures range from cartoonish horses to members of the Plain community and more. Conestoga wagons with horses or mules are a specialty of his. Tom called the book “Through My Eyes,” and on the last 10 pages, he gave friends a chance to speak about his life through their own eyes. “I could not have lived without friends,” said Tom. Copies of Tom’s books may be purchased at the Conestoga Wagon Restaurant, 2961 Main St., Conestoga.

Lafayette Volunteer Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster, will host a first responder food truck fundraiser on Friday, April 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. Six food trucks will offer an array of food choices, and more than 20 other vendors will be on hand to showcase a variety of products. This year, however, families are able to come back and participate. “I’ve been trying to build up the series for families in Lancaster County because I feel as though we’ve been so disconnected during the pandemic,” said Atticks. “I really just want people to come out, meet their neighbors, and encourage their kids.” Throughout the series, runners earn points and those with the most points

dinator selects one runner as the recipient of the Healthy Kids Award. “This award is for someone who embodies the whole idea of being a healthy kid,” explained Atticks. “During my first season, I gave the award to an inspiring boy with autism who just gripped my heart. He showed up every week, ran his race, and never gave up.” At the end of the series, parents have the opportunity to participate in a mile run while their children watch. “I promote this because it’s a way for us to show our kids how much they inspire us,” noted Atticks. “Our kids come out every week and do their best. Let’s show them what their effort does for us.” To sponsor the Healthy Kids Running Series, visit https://healthykids runningseries.org and search for the local series. Congratulations to our nurses for their continued commitment to quality care and service excellence. While we are extremely proud to receive ANCC Magnet Recognition® for nursing excellence for the fifth consecutive time, the real winners are our patients. Our team of nurses is dedicated to providing the highest level of care every day for our patients. Magnet Recognition® is the most prestigious international distinction a health system can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. Congratulations to our nursing team for bringing home gold, again. All six of Penn Medicine’s acute-care facilities — which also includes The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Chester County Hospital, and Princeton Medical Center — have achieved Magnet Recognition®.
