Return Trip - PA Family Travel Fair Is Back endy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the fourth annual PA Family Travel Fair, knows that if you want to interest families, you need to appeal to children. With that in mind, Royal has lined up a balloon magic show, a few lovable mascots, reptiles, and a special passport game with a prize designed to make children smile for this year’s fair. The fair, which was first held in 2018, was held virtually in 2020 and canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but for 2022, the free event will include exhibitors, amusements, food trucks, and opportunities to win prizes. The return of the annual PA Family Travel Fair will offer opportunities to see mascots, experience magic, and even meet a few Keystone State cowboys.
The last time Clair Leaman planned a “Messiah” Sing-along to be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, it was the spring of 2020. “We canceled that one,” said Leaman, who, along with others, organizes the Sing-along at Westminster, as well as a Christmas event in Chester County. The Chester County presentation was held again in December of 2021. “We didn’t know what to expect,” said Leaman. “We had a pretty good turnout, and I was amazed because I had no idea what to expect after being gone for two years. The people are still with us and still wanting to sing.”

Martin and Hannah Elizabeth Fisher Martin,” on Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata. Admission is complimentary. The book spans the life of his grandparents, Lester W. and Hannah Fisher Martin, from when they were children in the 1920s and 1930s until they built a rancher-style house in 1964 beside the ruins of an old church near Napierville. The book and presentation will include new never-before-published family background information on the earlier ancestors of the local Martin, Fisher, and Weaver/Weber families, including photographs of many of the 144 quilts Hannah E. The 23rd Messiah Sing-along will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, on Friday, April 22, at 7 p.m. Leaman will conduct the soloists, choir, and orchestra, and guest conductor Bruce Gerlach of Lancaster Bible College will conduct the “Hallelujah” chorus. The sing-along is unique because area vocalists are invited to purchase or rent “Messiah” scores and then take part in the presentation. The event is also open to those who would just like to listen. The tradition has its roots in the founding of the Chester County Christian Chorale by Leaman in 1976. The Lancaster version of the sing-
along, which only includes the second and third parts of Handel’s “Messiah,” began in 1998. “We start with ‘Behold the Lamb of God,’” explained Leaman. At first, the concert was held at Neffsville Mennonite Church, but in the spring of 2000, it was moved to Westminster. New soloists for the event are soprano Sarah Shafer and bass Steven Condy. Returning soloists are contralto Heidi Kurtz and tenor Timothy Bentch. Shafer has sung with the San Diego Opera and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. Condy is on the roster of The Metropolitan Opera, as well as a number of national operas. Kurtz is a core member
of the Philadelphia Singers and has performed solo with the Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia. Bentch served as a missionary in Hungary, where he also sang at the Hungarian State Opera. Frank Dodd, who oversees music at Westminster, has joined the board of the organization as special adviser to the director. He will play the harpsi-
chord in the April 22 presentation. Leaman recalled that more than 100 took part in the Christmas event. “Come as you are,” he invited, noting that masks are optional. A freewill offering will be received. Readers who would like more information may visit www. messiah-singalong.org.

Baseball Team Tops E-town, Blanks Solanco
BY ERIC PYLES
You can tell a lot about a team by how they respond to a season opening, 13-3 setback. The Buckskin baseball team showed they are bounce back tough. CV followed that loss to LampeterStrasburg with a 9-3 win over Elizabethtown and a 2-0 shutout of Solanco. Sam Thompson picked up the complete game shutout against Solanco on the 4th, allowing two hits while striking out six. Abdiel Fernandez pushed the first run across with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth while Caden Miller tacked on an insurance run with a sixth inning double. A few days prior, the Bucks used a six-run third to blow by Elizabethtown. Fernandez and Owen Fisher led that charge, driving in three runs on a 711 E. Main St Ephrata, PA 17522

pair of doubles. Add in Kayden Fisher’s second inning RBI and CV had all the run support that Owen Fisher needed. The sophomore covered the opening 4+ innings and collected eight strikeouts. Brendan Bossert covered the final 2+ innings with one strikeout and one run allowed. After Mother Nature pushed back CV’s regular opener, the honor went to Lampeter-Strasburg on March 30th. The Pioneers needed just six innings to collect the 13-3 win, handing the loss to Thompson for four innings of work. Preston Fisher covered the final two innings. Thompson tried to help his own cause with a two-hit, two-RBI day at the plate but CV mustered just one more hit and Connor Esbenshade’s fifth inning fielder’s choice RBI.

VOLLEYBALL A slow stretch for the volleyball team left a 3-0 loss to Hempfield on April 5th as the lone action. Camden Clapper and Ethan Tardibuono both finished with eight kills in the 25-14, 25-23 and 25-23 loss. Kenji Pha tallied 28 assists while Kyle Hutchinson added 16 digs. LACROSSE The 2022 season could not have started better for the boy’s lacrosse team. Wins over Conrad Weiser and Bishop McDevitt have the Buckskins at 5-0 with an 88-26 scoring edge. CV racked up nearly a third of that tally in their 24-8 victory over Conrad Weiser on April 1st. Keller Dillman (7g4a) and Hunter Silvaggio (6g-1a) paced the attached while Isaiah Sensenig (4g), Noah Nolt (3g-2a), Jeff Fisher (2g3a) and Tyson Zwaska (2g-1a) enjoyed multi-goal games as well. Ben Nolt (seven saves) and Soren Stolzfus (eight saves) split time in goal. The Buckskins were back at Saturday morning opposite McDevitt claiming a 14-5 win. Nolt went solo in goal and finished with 17 saves. Silvaggio, Zwaska and Jeff Fisher netted four goals apiece and combined for six assists. Dillman picked up the final two goals. The Lady Buckskin lacrosse team picked up their initial victory of the 2022 season with a 9-4 win over Conrad Weiser on March 31st. Sophia Hess paced the attached with four goals while Danae Ulrich and Caroline Kulp added two scores each. Bella Miller tacked on the final score. Jamie Handwerger turned away 13 shots to earn the win. TENNIS The boy’s tennis team rebounded from a season opening loss to rip off three straight wins, perching the Buckskins atop the Section Two standings. CV’s most recent win came via a 4-3 final over Ephrata on April 4th. The Bucks split those wins between singles and doubles action with Henry McQuate-Krahnke and Jason Schlegelmilch earning the singles victories. Schlegelmilch was also part of a winning doubles team, getting help from Nolan Miller. Grady Ray and Ivan Shrom picked up the final win.

The Buckskins’ Evan Lapp hustles to beat out an infield hit in Conestoga Valley’s 2-0, Section Two win at Solanco on April 4.
March 30th saw the Buckskins post their second straight 6-1 win, this one over Manheim Central. CV claimed all three doubles matches with Yuji Wenger and McQuate-Krahnke joining the Miller/Schlegelmilch and Ray/Shrom duos. Miller, Schlegelmilch and McQuate-Krahnke rounded things out with singles victories. In between the two regular season matches was the 2022 edition of the Buckskin Invitational with the host team claiming the team title and tournament MVP. “All-in-all an excellent day for CV tennis,” said head coach Dale Gregg. McQuate-Krahnke was the MVP with his title at number four singles wrapping up the team title for CV as well. Shrom and Luke Snader collected CV’s other flight win, topping the field in number one doubles while earning Shrom a spot on the all-tournament team. Schlegelmilch took silver in number three singles with Josiah Dillman and Eli Lefever adding a second silver in number two doubles. Ray missed the title at number five singles, settling for silver. Wenger and Miller tacked on bronze medals for their work in number one and number two singles. “The team performed very well. They exceeded my expectations,” said Gregg. “We always look to get a flight champion (it is a tradition). However, to have 5 finalists - 2 champions and have everyone win a match throughout the day was amazing. Everyone responded well to coaching and played to their strengths.” SOFTBALL A fast 2-0 start led to a three-game slide for the softball team with losses to Lampeter-Strasburg, Elizabethtown and Solanco leaving CV 2-3. Rhiannon Henry’s three-hit, 13-K gem against L-S on March 30th was for naught with the Lady Pioneers stealing a 1-0 win. More heartbreak
followed on April 1st when Elizabethtown plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal an 8-7 win. Henry yielded 10 Lady Bear hits and eight runs with two strikeouts and five walks. Laken Smith, Kassie Horning and Becca Hartranft all enjoyed twoRBI games, but it was not enough to stave off the late E-town rally. CV was back in action on the 4th, falling to Solanco by a 2-0 final. Henry covered all seven innings to take the loss and was also responsible for Conestoga Valley’s lone hit, a sixth inning double. TRACK April 4th saw the track teams split their meet with Warwick. The boy’s won 98-52 and the girls slipped 99-50. Joey Castronova (200m, 400m), Ben Eberly (110H,300H) and Carter May (shot, discus) led the way with two solo wins each. CV added wins in the 400m and 1600m relays with Nick Tran (100m) and Emmanuel Gitonga (1600m) taking the final two wins on the track. Zach Stoudt (long jump), Thabo Lautsbaugh (triple jump) and Jordan Sensenig (high jump) finished with field wins. Four Lady Buckskins picked up one each with Jessica Koenig (100H) and Grace Lapp (300H) sweeping the hurdles. Kallie Schnapf added a 100m and Kylynn Frankford a 400m win. CV spent April 2nd at Cumberland Valley for the Bruce Dallas Invitational. The Buckskins put six solo performers on the podium and one relay. Castronova, Micah Aldrich, Carson Miller and Gitonga finished fourth in the 1600m relay. Gitonga was fifth in the 800m while Castronova claimed sixth in the 400m. Cameron Swinton added a bronze in the triple jump while Stoudt earned a silver in the high jump. Lapp posted the best finish on the girl’s side, taking fourth in the 300H. Elle Emrey was seventh in the 100H.

Catherine O’Sullivan, director of the library in Intercourse, does not know exactly why the library’s name was changed to Pequea Valley Public Library sometime after 2001. But she does know that when a suggestion was made in 2021 to change the name back to Intercourse Library, the library board responded immediately, unanimously, and positively. The library was started by the Intercourse Lions Club working with the first director, Margie Perella, in 1975. “It was called the Intercourse Library or Reading Center,” said O’Sullivan. The library operated as a satellite of the Lancaster County Library System, and the Pequea Valley School District gave the Lions permission to use a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Old Philadelphia Pike and Hollander Road that had been vacant for many years. organization was incorporated as a nonprofit on July 25, 1988. In 1997, the library became independent of the county system. “In 2004, a capital campaign was launched to build the present library, which opened at 31 Center St., Intercourse, in 2007,” reported O’Sullivan. The library, which serves Paradise, Salisbury, and Leacock townships, is currently open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Mondays through Thursdays, the library reopens from 3 to 7 p.m. On Fridays, the library reopens from 2 to 5 p.m. O’Sullivan explained that the current hours worked well to separate staff members during COVID-19 restrictions and that during the mid-day when the library was closed, the staff had time to disinfect and deep-clean the computers, public spaces, and bathrooms. O’Sullivan also discovered that area residents who visit the library prefer the hours. “I have people who like to be here in the early morning and people who need the evening,” she said. “It seems to be serving its purpose budget-wise (as well).” O’Sullivan also reported that the Salisbury Township Branch Library, located at 835 Houston Run Drive, Gap, is thriving. In March, the library hosted a group of sixth-grade students during the mid-day hours when the library is closed to the public. “We didn’t have to worry about (using our) ‘library voices,’ and we could do a scavenger hunt,” said O’Sullivan, who noted that the learning experience was especially important to children who had not been able to frequent libraries during COVID-19 restrictions. “We are thinking to expand on that and try to reach out to homeschooling groups and others that might want to use the (the library in the) middle of the day,” she said. According to O’Sullivan, the majority of board members recall using the Intercourse Library as a child, and many area residents still use the original moniker because that is where the library is located. As of March 8, all the necessary paperwork had been filed to reinstate the name. “Now we are beginning a transition in terms of letting patrons, businesses, and vendors know,” said O’Sullivan. Readers who would like more information on the library may visit https://pvpl.org.
